LIFESTYLE LETTER
Falling for October October might be one of my favorite months in Nashville. The heat finally starts to let up, the leaves begin to change, and there’s something about fall that makes everything feel a little more inviting. Dinner outside, a long walk through the neighborhood, football weekends, fall festivals and finally pulling out a sweater, even if Nashville decides it’s still 80 degrees by noon. This issue is a little bit of everything we love about this time of year. We’re celebrating our community, sharing a little food inspiration, and, of course, making room for some Halloween fun. I’ve always loved that fall seems to bring people together. Maybe it’s gathering around a table, meeting friends for dinner, sitting around a firepit, or simply stopping to talk to neighbors while trick-or-treaters make their way down the street. Life feels a little more connected this time of year. And speaking of Halloween, I fully support buying the candy early, eating it yourself, and then having to buy it all over again on October 31. Surely I’m not the only one. However you spend October, I hope you enjoy the cooler days, eat something delicious, get outside, and make time for the people you love. Happy fall!

A TASTE OF Hawke’s Bay
Here the Menu Meets the Map: Inside Rosewood Cape Kidnappers ARTICLE BY CAROLINE SHIRLEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
You can taste the difference between a menu and a place. Most menus at five-star resorts could exist anywhere. Swap the tablecloth, swap the view, and half of what passes for luxury dining would land the same in Dubai as it does in Madrid. The wine list changes, but the kitchen doesn’t. That’s fine, mostly. But there’s a smaller category of dining rooms where the opposite is true. Where what’s on the plate exists because of what’s outside the window, not despite it. Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, set above the cliffs of Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island, belongs to that second category. Not by design, by geography.
12
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L
The kitchen keeps its own garden, growing vegetables, herbs, and eggs, and the nightly menu highlights whatever came out of the garden that day. Some nights it carries most of the plate. Other nights it shows up in the details instead: the herbs, the eggs, the garnish that’s more than a garnish. CONTINUED >

The rest of the plate comes from named growers rather than an anonymous supply chain. Strawberries from Havelock North orchards, a short drive inland. Seafood from Wairarapa waters. Figs from Te Mata, thirty varieties grown a few kilometers away. One signature dish is a lamb shank cooked with horopito, a native pepper tree that grows almost nowhere outside New Zealand. None of this is unusual for a serious kitchen. The point isn’t to impress. It’s to be accurate. The wine list makes the same argument in a different register. New Zealand’s reputation abroad runs almost entirely toward Marlborough sauvignon blanc. But Hawke’s Bay, one of the country’s oldest wine regions, does something most of the country can’t. Its most serious sub-region, Gimblett Gravels, is defined by a soil type rather than a boundary on a map, a rarity in wine. The wines that result, mostly Bordeaux-style blends of merlot and cabernet, are concentrated and structured. The resort’s cellar is built around this region rather than borrowing prestige from Bordeaux or the Barossa Valley to fill it out. A few standout bottles from elsewhere earn a place on the list, but Hawke’s Bay is the point of it. Order a glass with dinner and you’re not choosing a wine so much as choosing to stay where you already are: a few kilometers from where the grapes grew, tasting the same ground that grew your dinner. None of this is an accident. It’s simply what happens when a kitchen and a cellar both answer to the same small radius. The tomatoes on the plate and the merlot in the glass grew up practically as neighbors. That kind of coherence is rare, and it’s why a meal at Cape Kidnappers doesn’t read as a performance. It reads as the kitchen translating what’s outside the window. The best trips I build for clients start with a question most people forget to ask: what does a place actually taste like, and who’s going to make sure you find out? Some resorts answer with a menu. The good ones answer with a place. Caroline | Founder, Vogue Voyage voguevoyage.co inquire@voguevoyage.co

The Candy Crawl A neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to the best trick-or-treating in Middle Tennessee ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK
12 South Get ready to march: 12 South's beloved Halloween parade is back for its 7th year, and it's bringing the whole neighborhood outside. The 900 blocks of Halcyon and Montrose shut down to traffic, clearing the way for a brass marching band to lead a parade of costumes and kids past homes decked out by residents who cheer just as hard as they decorate. The band then camps out at Halcyon and Sherbourne for 40 more minutes, streets closed until 8 p.m. for trick-or-treating and neighborly fun. Last year even brought a 360-degree photo booth and the Grilled Cheeserie food truck.
Sylvan Park For the serious trick-or-treaters, the Richland neighborhood in Sylvan Park is where Halloween goes all out. Homes here are famous for over-the-top decorations where houses are transformed for the occasion, making every house feel like its own mini haunted attraction. However, the real treat is the candy. Richland has a reputation for handing out full-size bars, making this the perfect spot to take your kids trick-or-treating.
16
T R E N D SE T T E R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
When it comes to Halloween, you only get so many chances to take your kids trick-or-treating before they’ve outgrown the costumes and the pillowcases full of candy. So, you might as well make it count. Luckily, the options of where to trick-or-treat in in Middle Tennessee are endless. Entire neighborhoods transform into haunted wonderlands, streets close to traffic, and families spill out onto sidewalks
for one of the most beloved nights of the year. Whether chasing the biggest candy bar, finding the most jaw-dropping decorations, or just a fun, festive atmosphere, this city has something for every kind of trick-or-treater. These four neighborhoods go above and beyond to make the night memorable. Here’s where to find the best trick-or-treating routes this year.
Belle Meade Every year, families flock to Belle Meade Historic Site for its beloved annual Trick or Treat, held the weekend before Halloween. The free, family-friendly afternoon brings costumed kids to a candy-filled Treat Walk winding through the historic property, plus face painting, hay rides, a harvest hay maze, live music, and more. For a break from the action, the Carriage House Cinema offers a quiet spot to grab popcorn and watch a movie, and is the best way to get a head start on the Halloween fun.
East Nashville When it comes to Halloween, East Nashville goes all out. Eastland Avenue delivers professional-caliber decorations and an electric, high-energy crowd that makes the whole street feel like one big party. Nearby, Ordway, Russell, Stratton, and Greenfield often close to vehicles, giving little ones a safer path to load up on candy without dodging cars. And no trip through the neighborhood is complete without Fatherland Street, an annual favorite known for its stellar decor and buzzing atmosphere. Expect big crowds, bigger energy, and some of the best Halloween spirit in the city.

NO TRICKS,

“IT ALL STARTS WITH SET TING THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE VISIT, BEGINNING THE SECOND THE FAMILIES WALK IN, WHERE A FRIENDLY STAFF AND A WELCOMING, KID-FRIENDLY OFFICE HELP MELT AWAY ANY NERVES.”
To most kids, nothing is more spooky than a trip to the dentist’s chair. But the fatherson duo Dr. Tim McNutt Sr and Dr. David McNutt of McNutt Pediatric Dentistry seem to have cracked the code, turning white-knuckle visits into a delightful experience for parents and children alike. With Halloween right around the corner, there’s no better time to think about caring for your child’s teeth. Between the candy corn and the pillowcases full
of chocolate, October has a way of putting kids’ teeth – and parents’ nerves – to the test. But according to the McNutt’s, Halloween doesn’t have to be a horror story for your child’s smile. With the right habits and the right dentist, keeping those teeth healthy can be just as painless as the visit itself. It all starts with setting the atmosphere of the visit, beginning the second the families walk in, where a friendly staff and a
welcoming, kid-friendly office help melt away any nerves. One of the many ways the father-son duo accomplishes this is by walking children through every step before it happens, slowly introducing them to the dental tools along the way. The intimidating, overhead light becomes “Mr. Sunshine.” The suction tool, which might otherwise startle a child, becomes “Mr. Thirsty.” Small touches like these allow kids to let their guard down, as does CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . the chance to practice on a stuffed animal first, so they feel comfortable and relaxed before the real appointment begins. “We don’t try to do everything known to dentistry on the first visit,” Dr. Tim McNutt Sr said. “I feel like showing them the instruments – the mirror, a toothbrush – and modeling it on a stuffed animal and letting them do things like brush and look with a mirror on [it], they’re also getting that hands-on experience to do things that aren’t scary,” Dr. David McNutt added. That same desire to ease kids’ nerves goes back further than the visits themselves. Back in 1989, Dr. Tim set out to tackle the fear before it even had a chance to set in, writing his children’s book, Alley Alligator’s Awesome Smile, to walk kids through their first trip to the dentist before they ever sat in the chair themselves. “The reason I wrote it was because at that time, there weren’t that many books that encouraged parents to take a child

to the dentist before they had a problem,” Dr. Tim explained. “Well, we want them to come before they have a problem.” While some may dismiss the importance of caring for baby teeth, the McNutts are on a mission to prove otherwise. The McNutts teach healthy habits early and emphasize why caring for teeth, baby or adult, matters from the start. Bad habits formed young have a way of sticking around, which is exactly why building a consistent routine of brushing and flossing early on matters so much, clearing away anything left behind after a meal, or a night of trick-or-treating. “We want to try and care for or repair baby teeth as best we can,” Dr. David said. “Baby teeth will also hold space for the grown-up teeth.” When it comes to Halloween candy, the McNutt’s have a take that might surprise parents: chocolate is actually one of the safer options. Chocolate dissolves quickly and doesn’t linger on teeth the way stickier
candies do. Gummies, caramels, and other tacky sweets are the real problem as they cling to teeth and take much longer to break down. When it comes to cavities, it’s less about what you eat and more about how long it stays on your teeth. That’s why the McNutt’s say frequency matters just as much as the candy itself. Sitting down, eating a piece or two, and being done with it does far less damage than nibbling on sweets throughout the day. Even snacking on healthy foods all day can raise the risk of cavities, and when the sugar is involved, that effect only speeds up. At the end of the day, Halloween candy doesn’t have to be a trade-off. With a few smart habits – and a little guidance from the McNutt’s – kids can enjoy their candy and keep their smiles healthy. “I THINK PEOPLE GATHER IN HOMES WHERE THEY FEEL WELCOME. IT ISN’T ABOUT HAVING THE BIGGEST KITCHEN OR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROOM—IT’S ABOUT CREATING WARMTH.”
For Xela Andrews, the heart of a home is not defined by how perfectly it photographs, but by how naturally people live inside it. The Nashvillearea designer and founder of Xela Andrews Interiors approaches every project with that idea in mind, creating rooms that are polished and personal without sacrificing comfort or function. That philosophy feels especially relevant in the kitchen and dining spaces, where everyday routines and some of life’s best moments tend to overlap. Morning coffee turns into conversation. Friends gather around the island while dinner is being prepared. Holidays, birthdays and ordinary Tuesday nights become part of a home’s story. Andrews founded her firm in 2017 and today works with clients throughout Middle Tennessee and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Her full-service approach can begin long before furniture and accessories enter the picture. She works alongside homeowners, architects and builders on everything from architectural details and finishes to lighting, cabinetry, furnishings and custom pieces. The result is a home designed from the inside out: beautiful, certainly, but also intentional about the people who will actually live there. For Andrews, good design is ultimately less about following a look and CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B E L L E M E A D E

“THE KITCHEN REALLY IS THE HEART OF THE HOME. IT’S WHERE EVERYONE ENDS UP, WHETHER YOU PLANNED FOR THEM TO OR NOT. I WANT IT TO BE BEAUTIFUL, OF COURSE, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I WANT IT TO WORK FOR THE WAY A FAMILY ACTUALLY LIVES.”
more about creating a place that feels unmistakably yours for many years to come. That personal approach has taken on more meaning for Andrews since moving from Dallas to Middle Tennessee. She now lives in Brentwood with her husband, and as her children have grown and left home, she has gained a fresh perspective on how a home changes along with the people inside it. Her own Southern Colonial home reflects many of the ideas she brings to client projects. Rather than designing rooms simply to be admired, Andrews thinks about how they will be used: where family will gather, where guests will linger and which details will make a space feel warm. In her home, lighting, wallpaper, art and soft textures create that sense of welcome, while outdoor spaces are designed for quiet afternoons and lively gatherings. It is an approach that fits naturally into Nashville, a city where entertaining often feels less formal and more like opening the door, putting something on the table and asking people to stay awhile.
28
M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN
For clients, the design process begins with listening. Andrews wants to understand not only what someone likes aesthetically, but how they move through a room, what they need from it and what makes a house feel like home. Her firm describes its process as highly collaborative, working closely with the professionals involved in a build or renovation so each decision contributes to a cohesive whole. The details matter, but personality matters too. Andrews favors spaces that feel layered and collected rather than dictated by a passing trend. Meaningful objects, warm materials, art and pieces with a story can give a room character that cannot be replicated by purchasing an entire look at once. Perhaps that is why her work feels at home in kitchens, dining rooms and gathering spaces. These are rooms asked to do a lot: function beautifully, withstand daily life and still feel special when the people we love arrive. Andrews designs for all three. Because the most memorable homes are rarely the ones where nothing is touched. They are the ones where people feel comfortable enough to pull up a chair, pour another glass and stay.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season
The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

Meet Lupo Notte Italian flavors, stylish surroundings and a new gathering place in Green Hills.
A new Italian dining destination is now open in the heart of Green Hills. Lupo Notte opened September 16 at Vertis Green Hills, bringing a warm, intimate setting designed for lingering dinners, celebratory nights and one more round at the bar. The menu centers on handmade pastas, New York–style pizzas, seasonal dishes and shareable favorites, including wagyu beef carpaccio and signature Lupo meatballs.
An Italian-inspired cocktail program and thoughtfully curated wine list complete the experience. Whether stopping in for a cocktail and a few shared plates or settling in for a full dinner, Lupo Notte offers an elevated yet approachable take on Italian dining. With its inviting atmosphere, open kitchen and stylish European-inspired design, the restaurant brings something fresh to Green Hills while still feeling like the kind of neighborhood spot guests will return to again and again.
