LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement because it presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue, especially when it comes to our health. Fitness and mental health experts recommend that the start of a new year is a great time to prioritize sleep, eat cleaner, adopt a new and inspiring mindset, keep a health journal to track your progress and be sure to make time for yourself to meditate, listen to a podcast or take a quick walk each day. We planned this edition from the approach of not supplying quick fixes for fitness by checking boxes for the short term but by valuing what's sustainable over the long run. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to everyone's physical, emotional and mental health. Here’s to y'all! We’re rooting for you and everyone's good health.

"Who am I beyond a supporting character?"

14

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

When Caitlin Estell moved from Los Angeles to Nashville during the pandemic to be with her then-boyfriend, now-husband, radio and television personality Bobby Bones, she says she didn’t expect the major life shift that occurred. “I went from having a normal life, with only my friends following me on socials, to moving to a city where my husband is very public. I don’t think you really know if you like something until you experience it,” she says, speaking of the sudden exposure to his fanbase. “I wasn’t used to feedback about myself from anyone who didn’t know me, and I hadn’t yet built up the muscles to turn a blind eye to those opinions." Caitlin says she and her husband and are very opposite in that way. "He’s very much public and would prefer to post what he’s having for breakfast every day on the internet,” she says. “We’re different, not worse, not better. The pandemic, mixed with lifestyle adjustments, caused me to have some anxiety, even more so than I was having in regular life.” After moving from a city and friends she loved to a town where she knew no one but Bobby, Caitlin says she wondered what kind of life she’d have here, especially when the world was shut down. “Then I had to figure out how to have a life when the world wasn’t shut down.” Now, she loves Nashville and has a very supportive friend group, but finding the answer took two years and a lot of self-discovery. “I realized I needed to figure out what I actually think about myself, so I’m not cosigning things, whether positive or negative, and letting that shape who I am as a human. I got caught in that for a bit, mostly the negativity, but even the positive things. People might comment that you always have cute shoes, and you think, ‘Oh no, people think I always have cute shoes! Now I always have to have cute shoes! All the time!’”

Caitlin discovered that looking for her identity in what other people either liked about her or didn’t was something she was no longer willing to do. Having been in therapy after a traumatic experience as a child, Caitlin says she knew help from a professional would allow her to take positive steps to adjust to her new life and manage her anxiety. “When things got hard, I knew I needed to talk some of this out. I thought, ‘I can’t take this home to Bobby every night.’ He’d lived this life for so long. A lot of the things that would really rock me were so normal to him that he couldn’t fully comprehend why I’d put so much stock in other people’s opinions. But I’ve never had strangers say things about me before. This world is wild, and I needed help. “I think another reason I needed therapy was about losing my identity. Most of the time, my husband’s job makes him the main character, and I needed to figure out, ‘Who am I beyond a supporting character?’ I was always introduced as Bobby’s something, his girlfriend or fiancée or wife.” Caitlin felt a deep desire to figure out who she wanted to be and how to “make this life familiar, to find something that I enjoy and how not to lose myself in the shadow of another person, even though that shadow is beautiful.” “I’m at a place where I like myself. I’m at peace with who I am right now," she says. "I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love. At the end of the day, regardless of what anyone thinks of my mental health/self-love journey, I will still love myself.” As for those walking through life with her, Caitlin says, “I have such a great support system. I had a conversation with a friend about mental health the other day. He’s on his own journey, and we can really get in the weeds about the subject, and he was proud I was doing this interview. "I’m not sharing my experience over the last few years to get love."

It might seem trivial, but it’s such a step for me. I used to hide from everyone. It’s not that I care what strangers say to each other about me; it’s the thought of someone I love seeing what they’re saying and having a negative opinion.” Assured that her loved ones could read anything and still love her, she says, “It’s

16

that safety of having people who love and know you. It allows you to be yourself. If you don’t know where you hold your value, or if it is constantly tied to the opinions of others, it’s a never-ending game. You’re going to be constantly looking for that affirmation. You have no control over your value at that point.”

Need a break from the chaos at home? Haven’t shed the pandemic pounds, or looking for a place to continue reaching personal fitness goals in a funfueled environment? Founded in 2017, STRIDE Fitness is the first treadmill-based interval training brand in America. This boutique-styled studio expanded in 2019 as a franchise and now has nearly 90 licensed locations across the country. Franklin residents John and Kim Walker recognized the value in this revolutionary concept, opening Tennessee’s first STRIDE Fitness conveniently located in Nashville’s West End last June. Because of the positive feedback, the couple has plans in motion to open two more boutiques, with locations to be announced. STRIDE Fitness offers treadmill-based group fitness classes, plus full body strength and core-specific workout sessions available for a rounded exercise regimen. Their top-of-the-line Woodway Treadmills, designed with pro athletes in mind, provide ultimate shock absorption for those who want to clock a lot of running or walking minutes. STRIDE Fitness utilizes in-studio MyZone heart rate monitors to track each client’s heart rate, calorie burn, and intensity, offering post-class data on the STRIDE Fitness App. Their 55-minute workouts are doable for any person no matter what their fitness level is. They offer 28 classes, seven days a week, with options for morning, daytime and evening. Check out ClassPass for their latest reviews and 5.0 rating. The studio welcomes walkers, joggers and runners, all ages and fitness levels. All participants workout side-by-side to create a unique exercise experience, with personalized heart rates and distances to maintain to begin and end a class together.

“It’s a super fun environment. We definitely think that we have something special here," notes general manager Jodi Suglio. Jodi has strategically chosen accredited instructors with differing personalities and backgrounds, who all specialize in something a little different from one another, allowing for a greater opportunity for member connectivity. Head Coach Christina Pichiarello is an example of the qualified care you’ll receive at STRIDE Fitness Nashville. She is trained as a physician’s assistant, was recently named Nashville’s Best Running Coach in the city’s edition of FIT Magazine, was also chosen as the 2023 Rock N Roll Nashville Marathon Ambassador, and in September, Christina weighed in on her choice of footwear in a piece for SHAPE Magazine. Each coach creates their own playlist, playfully referring to themselves as accepting requests regularly. Themed classes evolve as the music becomes a customized vibe to each group’s mood. The instructors nurture an environment of inclusivity, helping to change the lives of those participating, with an emphasis on fun. They foster open dialogue about what members would like added or modified to enhance their experience, not only with music preferences, but for snack options available for purchase, or adjusted class hours. Jodi and her staff are creating a community, and sharing a genuine and unified objective, to help members reach their own personal goals, adding, “People come in for different reasons. We’re here for them to get exactly what they need.” 615.454.6956 StrideFitness.com/location/West-End CONTINUED >

The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

It’s no secret that people are flocking to Austin. What’s not to love about the warm weather, vast culinary scene and the ability to recreationally paddle board through the city limits? Add to that the attractive walkability it offers, letting you fuel your explorative side amid the hustle and bustle of the downtown scene without ever needing a ride. Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. Kayak, hike, bike and swim your way around the great Austin outdoors and enjoy one of the city’s most fantastic offerings that inspires people to get outside and play together. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public. Enjoy the architectural details, white-glove service, in-room Austin purveyor displays, and sophisticated, Southern-style meals. Speaking of meals, Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. It all started with Franklin Barbecue, helmed by Aaron Franklin who was the first pitmaster to win a James Beard award for Best Chef, which was inducted into the American Royal Hall of Fame and was credited for ushering in a new era of food into the city. Austin’s slow-cooked, fall-off-thebone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th floor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu. Perhaps a hidden gem is Austin’s mark on the forefront of the booming food truck scene, a foundation for famed, award-winning chefs getting started before getting the funding to open their own brick and mortars. Whether you indulge in one in a gas station parking lot or parked next to a music venue, you’ll find them all over town, serving up a variety of dishes to be devoured. But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. The creative menu includes everything from its house blend to its Cowboy Cookie Cold Brew you can pair with a hash brown or local-favorite “migas” taco. As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels, a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos, the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop.

For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot. Follow some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus, a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry. Or shop The Domain district in North Austin, a newer shopping center offering upscale hotels and fantastic restaurants. Shop luxury brands such as Saint Laurent Paris and Gucci and reward yourself with sweet and savory bites from a multitude of eateries. Nearby is the home of the new Austin FC Major League Soccer team, so you can take in a professional soccer match as part of your metropolitan experience, cheering on the club team partially owned by Matthew McConaughy. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the energy is incredible, and the stadium is a stunner. Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue. You can stroll boutiques and additional eateries and check out the uniquely converted bungalows that now offer day and nightlife entertainment destinations. While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery. And, as one would expect, you’ll find a plethora of great restaurants such as local favorites la Barbecue and Bird Bird Biscuit that was just listed as one of Yelp’s Top 5 restaurants to eat at in America. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here and, well, everywhere. From your airport arrival, to the open air around you, and then hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood, Austin is filled with live music. You’ll find musicians performing at world-famous festivals, intimate clubs, coffee houses, and even the corner taqueria. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds. ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round. Tour the venue, select your show and find everything from country to rock, hip-hop, rap, jazz and blues. With its true passion for its unparalleled live music scene, its championing of local creators and small business owners, and its celebration of its enriching arts and culture offerings, Austin avows a personality all its own and should be next on your playlist. We love it so much!

TIP #1 YOU CAN STILL HAVE A VARIETY OF HEALTHY AND DELICIOUS FOODS BY PLANNING AND PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR THE WEEK. • Preparing whole meals or dishes ahead of time saves a lot of time for busy people. • Ingredients required for specific meals can be prepped ahead of time to reduce total cooking time in the kitchen. • Having pre-prepared meals on hand can also reduce portion size and help you reach your nutrition and wellness goals. • Choose microwave and freezer safe containers for proper storage, including BPA-free plastic, flexible silicone or glassware containers. Include leftovers in meal planning. • I also cut up ripe fresh fruits and freeze them to use in smoothies instead of throwing them out. • Frozen fruits and vegetables often cost less and last longer than fresh ones. They retain high-quality nutrients because they are frozen immediately after being harvested. • Most frozen vegetables have no additives and preservatives, but some may contain added seasonings, salt, sugar or sauces. Avoid added ingredients by paying attention to the label and ingredient list.

• A list helps limit distractions, keep you on budget, restricts unhealthy impulse purchases and reduces multiple trips for forgotten items. • Buy kitchen staples to have on hand to make quick simple meals like canned tomatoes, tuna fish or salmon, corn, your favorite beans and grains such as rice, quinoa, barley, farro and whole grain pasta. • Plan your menus based on grocery store sales and produce that are in season and add beans for plantbased protein. • Buy extra staples when they are on sale, and don’t overlook the bulk bins to buy just the amount you need. • Buy pre-prepped items in the grocery store to further save time or use the salad bar for small servings.

TIP #4 T RY N OT TO G R O C E RY S H O P W H E N YO U A R E H U N G RY. • Everything looks delicious when you are hungry, and this could lead to unnecessary and unhealthy food purchases. • The additional calories may not be needed, and food could be wasted if not eaten.
