November Thankful In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be.

Kristin O’Donnell Tubb: 24 Books in 20 Years LOCAL AUTHOR THANKFUL SHE GETS TO WRITE FOR KIDS

How does one write 24 books for kids in 20 years? Ask Kristin O'Donnell Tubb.

An admitted “eternal optimist,” Kristin moved to Nashville after graduating from Auburn. She worked for nonprofits for almost a decade before an epiphany. “I realized that the corporate 9-to-5 thing is wonderful, but it wasn't for me. I’d just gotten married, and my husband said, ‘Why don't you just take a year and try writing?’” Kristin’s husband, Byron, is the grandson of the late Ernest Tubb. “I was like are you kidding because if you say it twice … and I took him up on it. He’s my number-one cheerleader.”

The risk paid off. Kristin did freelance work for Highlights and other children’s magazines and eventually found a job with Dalmation Press. “Kathy Knight, my editor there, taught me about a writer’s voice and how to turn around a deadline quickly. She was a real mentor to me.” Kristin wrote many Scooby Doo, Strawberry Shortcake, Powderpuff Girls, and other books about familiar characters for Dalmation Press. Her first original work, Autumn

Winnifred Oliver Does Things Different, was based on the Oliver family, who lived in Cades Cove before the National Parks Service took control.

When asked why she writes middle grade specifically, Kristin says, “Often people don't know what middle grade is, and it's that age 8 to 14 readership. I love middle grade because it's the first time kids read independently. They're selecting the stories themselves. Up until this age group, they’ve either been read to or been exposed to picture books where the illustrations tell much of the story. These are the first stories that they select on their own and read on their own. That's a big honor when you think about it, possibly being the first person to introduce a concept like service dogs to an eight-year-old.

It's a big responsibility, and it's one that I take very seriously. I’m very thankful.”

Kristin’s most recent works are Luna Howls at the Moon, Zeus Dog of Chaos, and A Dog Like Daisy, a trio of books about the lives of service dogs; The Story Collector and The Story Seeker, based on a true story and set in the New York Public Library; and The Decomposition of Jack, which released in October 2022.

“The Decomposition of Jack is about endings and beginnings, encapsulated through the concept of roadkill, which seems like an odd jumping-off point, but

works for some readers,” Kristin says.

“It’s not for every reader, but for those who maybe need to learn the concept that an ending isn’t always an end. It’s about cleaning out new spaces for growth.”

After reading an article about roadkill years ago, Kristin researched and learned what scientists do with it. “Roadkill is one of the most important tools we have to study wildlife and wildlife conservation.

Sometimes it’s moved from one location to another so it can be studied, and that reminded me of the Body Farm at the University of Tennessee. So I took that concept and married it to the idea of a roadkill scientist, and almost immediately … the main character came to my mind, scraping roadkill off the road to help his mom, but not for the reasons that people think. Not for food, but because she’s a scientist.

“Life cycles in the natural world are a really good metaphor for relationships.

Jack’s parents are going through a divorce, and he has a lot of comparisons of what his life looks like to the decomposition cycle.

Ultimately, I hope this book is a safe place to process grief.”

FINE ELEGANCE AND BEAUTIFUL JEWELRY AT ONE'S FINGERTIPS

Under the intriguing business name of ‘Art de L'Homme et Dieu - Art of Man and God,’ Naftali Presser started creating one-of-a-kind jewelry in Nashville in 2020.

“Jewelry is the quintessential example of the juxtaposition of gemstones drawn directly from nature, as the God part, still in a relatively preserved form and then transformed via the work of cutters, designers and craftsman, into the works they are, as the mankind part,” he explains.

Naftali believes the name perfectly highlights the unique nature of jewelry art.

The first collection of Art of Man and God jewelry features pendants, rings, both classic and transformable necklaces, as well as earrings of various forms.

While living in the West End/Green Hills area and working as a surgeon at the Ascension St. Thomas West Transplant Center, he says his creations were, and still are, inspired by his own life experiences, nature and history. “For example, our upcoming 2023 collection will feature, among others, works inspired by the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, as well as the plumage of the

members of the order Psittaciformes (parrots, cockatoos, macaws)."

Naftali says his jewelry pieces can be purchased through the company’s website, or by arranging virtual showings. They also can accommodate personal showings for specific pieces. “We also display at several jewelry shows, such as the New York Jewelry and Watch show.

“During the coming year, we’ll likely exhibit at a few national shows, as well as possibly our first foray into the international market,” he adds.

Additionally, during 2023, Naftali says he plans to release two lines: The Seven Wonders Collection and the main collection slated to be released during the summer. “We’re also partnering with a few strategic jeweler partners to exhibit some of our pieces,” he adds, with a smile.

Transcending into mutual eye contact with dancers from the largest professional ballet company in Tennessee is within blissful reach during the month fueled by thankfulness.

Nashville Ballet company members welcome audiences into their personal space for a one-of-a-kind immersive dance experience with "Live in Studio A," Nov. 4-13 at the Martin Center for Nashville Ballet. This intimate approach to performing gives audiences the rare opportunity to see three stunning ballets and a live chamber ensemble from the coveted vantage point usually only enjoyed by artistic staffers or cast members.

“This is really a unique opportunity for audiences to see the artistry and athleticism of dance up-close,”

shares Nashville Ballet Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. “With Live in Studio A, every person is seated only a few feet away from the dancers, allowing them to absorb movement in a way that just isn’t possible outside of the studio. It’s truly a magical experience between audience member and artist, and our dancers can’t wait to share that with our community.”

Live in Studio A will showcase the budding talent of the organization’s artists with both new and world-class works. The program will include George Balanchine’s balletic masterpiece, The Four Temperaments. Both technically challenging and aesthetically riveting, The Four Temperaments blends both classical and modern movement to examine the medieval theory that all humans possess four humors that makeup temperaments.

The production also will include the return of Artistic Director Paul’s beloved Seasons, featuring the music of Antonio Vivaldi recomposed by Max Richter, as well as the world premiere of CEO and Associate Artistic Director Nick Mullikin’s Four Loves. Nick verifies that the premise of Four Loves is derived from a Japanese folk tale he read, and will move the audience through a story of how the main character is shaped by how life runs its course, molding her into who she becomes.

"I believe our program will demonstrate how versatile our artists are, and may change the audience's minds about how the language of ballet can be turned into something provocative and how deep the sense of personal connections are while performing," explains Nick, who also teaches regularly at summer programs, festivals and schools across the United States.

He says this event demonstrates how the art is made. "In many ways, it takes ballet from a two-dimensional perspective into a three-dimensional, eyewitness experience. They aren't just athletes, and you'll get to see they are physical actors who are syncing their timing. You're hearing, seeing and sensing their emotions in a visceral way."

Nick shares a few, new observations that he believes audience members will learn from this immersive performance: • People have no idea ballet dancers work as hard as they do to make it look so easy.

• Audiences will be close enough to see the sweat on the dancers' faces, and likely will feel as though they feel what the dancers are feeling. (They will be sitting 25 to 50 feet away from the dancers rather than 500 feet.)

• With 25 dancers on the stage, audiences will see what looks symmetrical, along with how precision takes shape and what the choreographer meant it to look like.

• They will see patterns in overall movement.

• Audiences will grasp what it takes to dance on pointe, and will get to witness three different styles of dance along with what it's like to use each millimeter of ballet shoes for various executions.

• The hope is that everyone will appreciate the opportunity to see dance details from this different microscopic viewpoint.

Throughout Nick's time with the company, he's helped grow the School of Nashville Ballet, which serves more than 1,800 students annually. He has commissioned 20-plus new works for NB2, Nashville Ballet’s second company, with a focus on developing artistry and techniques side-by-side. He was the producer and assistant to the director on the regional Emmy award-winning Nashville's Nutcracker in 2020, as well as the Lucy Negro Redux performance production aired on PBS. Nick's choreography also premiered at the Collage Dance Collective's grand opening in Memphis and at the Belmont Fisher Performing Arts Center. Nick was named to succeed Paul as artistic director and CEO when Paul retires in June 2023.

"This type of performance changes the way we look at dancers and how they can utilize space within spaces. They can engage in full performance, and receive our immediate feedback from right in front of them, rather than us all being focused on playing to the back of the room. It allows the audience to truly understand how technically demanding ballet is, and how our troupe works both as individuals and as a unit together," says Nick. "It's an example of what more they can do, and makes me even more proud of stepping into the artistic director role."

Seasons and Four Loves will be accompanied by a live chamber orchestra, featuring international violin sensation and award-winning instrumentalist Yvette Kraft. A 2021 NPR “From The Top” Fellow and solo performer, Yvette made her professional debut at just 11 years old with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra.

Since then, she's played with several renowned companies, including the Interlochen Orchestra, Washington Idaho Symphony, Seattle’s Philharmonic Northwest Orchestra, and the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra.

As a board-certified nurse practitioner with a master's degree in acute care from Vanderbilt University, Neely Cotten has spent more than 15 years working in intensive care units locally and around the country. Her time in hospitals has taught her that many patients don’t fully understand what they are being told or what their options are when it comes to health care. She says she wants to change this narrative.

Neely founded Compass Health Resources in October 2021 and officially opened its doors in May of 2022. “There’ve been so many times I’ve thought ‘If this person had just had somebody to call, if they had a medical friend they could have run this by or talk things through with, they probably wouldn't even be in this situation,’” she says. “That's how Compass Health Resources really started to take shape in my mind; quite simply, I wanted people to have a strong clinical resource.”

Now, that medical resource person is her.

Neely is passionate about helping her clients be proactive, informed and confident when it comes to their health care journey. “I love helping people navigate the health care system well.

People are not a checklist; they are unique and have different needs.”

“Many times, patients have to come into the hospital in crisis for important ‘goals of care’ conversations to begin,” she says. “My aim is to keep them out of the hospital and help facilitate those conversations with their families and providers before there's a crisis. I've been very successful with my clients and their families in preventing unnecessary hospitalizations.”

Physicians and other practitioners, she’s found, welcome her assistance. “This is not a service that diminishes or oversteps what physicians do,” she says. “Personalized health care navigation is meant to be an additional layer of excellence.

“The most requested service I have right now is an accompaniment to clinical appointments.

I take notes for family members who can’t be present, speak with providers, and ask questions from a clinical perspective. My 15-plus years of clinical background is what sets Compass Health Resources apart from a social work or case management company.”

Neely assists doctors and patients in creating a plan of care that they can implement at home.

“Helping people formulate an educated, feasible plan from the very beginning is really important.”

She also speaks with clients and their families about the possible need to transition to the next level of care, whether that's finding home caregivers, moving to an independent/assisted living facility, or coordinating end-of-life services.

Other services offered by Compass Health Resources include coordination of tours for assisted living, skilled nursing, mental health, and other facilities; medication management; as well as completing legal healthcare documents, such as medical power of attorney and advanced care directives.

Originally from North Carolina, Neely moved to Nashville after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill with her bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN). She now specializes in inpatient palliative care. Her husband, Andrew, is originally from the middle Tennessee area and also works in the medical field. The couple and their three children live in Brentwood.

“Family is so important to us,” she says. “We spend a lot of time together and like to travel. We're also very involved with our downtown church, Nashville First.”

Thanksgiving There’s nothing more comforting from my childhood than the memory of Sunday lunches and holiday meals at my grandmother, “Mama Jo’s” house. She resides in memory care now and didn’t write down many of her recipes, so I cling to the comfort of her handwritten banana pudding recipe I do have. I hope these Thanksgiving snack and dessert recipes we’ve collected from a few residents at Blakeford Senior Living give you a little taste of comfort too this holiday season.

REFERENCE: Taste of Home Magazine, Holiday Recipes 2008 INGREDIENTS • ¼ cup of packed brown sugar • ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon • ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper • 1 egg white • 1 cup of salted cashews • 1 cup of pecan halves • 1 cup of dry roasted peanuts • ½ cup of dried cranberries DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cayenne; set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk the egg white; add nuts and cranberries. Sprinkle with sugar mixture and toss to coat.

3. Spread in a single layer on a greased baking sheet.

4. Bake at 300 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown, stirring once.

5. Cool.

6. Store in an airtight container.

INGREDIENTS Cookies: • 1 egg • 1 cup of brown sugar • ½ cup of white sugar • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon • 2 ½ cups of flour • 1 ½ cups of pecans, coarsely broken and toasted • ½ cup (one stick) of butter, softened • ¾ cup of pumpkin puree • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla • 1 teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt Butter Cream Icing: • ½ cup of softened butter • 1 teaspoon of good-quality vanilla • 2 cups powdered sugar • 1-2 tablespoons of heavy cream (or milk)

DIRECTIONS: 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2) Line baking sheet(s) with parchment paper.

3) In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugars.

4) Beat in the egg, pumpkin puree and vanilla.

5) In a separate mixing bowl, combine the salt, baking powder, cinnamon and flour. Add these dry ingredients to the other mixture and mix until well combined.

6) Add the pecans and mix well.

7) Using a medium size cookie scoop, place cookies on the prepared cookie sheet. If you don’t use a cookie scoop, you can drop them from a large spoon.

8) Bake for about 12-14 minutes. Don’t overbake! ***While they are baking, make the icing. Using a stand or hand mixer, combine ingredients until fluffy and smooth.

9) When cookies are done and completely cool, put a big “dollop” of icing on each cookie. The easiest way to ice the cookies is to put the icing into a sandwich-size plastic bag and snip a tiny portion of one corner.

UNIQUE FACT: “This recipe was given to me many years ago where I grew up in the panhandle of Nebraska. It is easy to prepare and a great combination of bread pudding and pumpkin pie –the kind of ‘stick to your ribs’ food that can be enjoyed when a blizzard rages outside… or not.”

INGREDIENTS • ½ of a loaf of raisin bread, cut into cubes • 2 eggs • 1 cup of pumpkin • Ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to taste • 1/3 cup of pecans or walnuts – big pieces • ½ cup of brown sugar • 1 can (12 oz.) of evaporated milk • 1 teaspoon of vanilla DIRECTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2) In a 9-inch pie plate or round baking dish coated with non-stick cooking spray Pam (or buttered), place the bread cubes.

3) In a medium bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, milk, pumpkin and spices.

4) Pour mixture over the bread cubes – lightly toss to coat all cubes with this mixture.

5) Sprinkle with nuts.

6) Bake for about 25 minutes or until the knife comes out clean.

7) Cut into wedges.

8) Serve with whipped cream.

CR ANBERRY FRUIT CONSERVE RESIDENT’S NAME: B.J Taylor REFERENCE: Originally from the kitchen of friend Mary Dickson INGREDIENTS • 1 pound of fresh cranberries (picked over and washed) • 1 ½ cups of water • 2 ½ cups of sugar • 1 cup of seeded raisins, chopped • 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped • Grated rind and juice of 1 orange • Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon • 1 cup of chopped walnuts DIRECTIONS 1) Cook cranberries in water until skin pops open.

2) Add sugar, raisins, apple, orange rind and juice and lemon rind and juice.

3) Boil together for fifteen minutes.

4) Remove from heat and add walnuts.

MAKE YOUR OWN VERSION OF CHEF KASSMAN’S 5 SPICE DUCK CONFIT! 5-SPICE CURE INGREDIENTS: • 1 tablespoon fennel seed • 1 tablespoon cloves • 1 tablespoon Szechuan peppercorns • 3 cloves star anise • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Combine in spice grinder until finely ground, then combine thoroughly with: • ¼ cup dark brown sugar • ¾ cup kosher salt INSTRUCTIONS: Coat duck legs lightly and evenly with cure mix. Set into a perforated pan or rack with another pan below to catch excess moisture.

Let the duck sit for at least six hours, preferably overnight.

Place duck legs in a single layer inside a deep baking pan. Fully cover in fat (duck or chicken fat, or canola oil).

Cover with foil and bake at 300 degrees for three and a half hours.

Allow the duck to sit in the fat until it has returned to room temperature.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.”

• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers.

“Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.

• Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors.

“Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

• “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.”

• An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.”

• Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us.

Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing.

When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.”

• To build confidence as a host, start small and practice.

“Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!”

• As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
