The holidays are approaching and with them often come overnight guests. Whether their visit is long or short, it’s key to ensure your company feels at home. “Anyone can turn any room with a bed in it – a playroom, an office, or a bedroom suite – into a guest retreat with a few thoughtfully placed items,” says Cami Luppino, Founder & Co-Principal of award-winning Interior Design firm lulu HOME. While quality bedding and extra pillows are a plus, the little things are the big things and make for the ultimate stay. Cami and lulu HOME Co-Principal Alana Irwin divulged their secrets for a dreamy guest space that will keep your favorite visitors feeling rested.

1. Provide a bedside table lamp. “It’s a bit more convenient for lights out than getting up and flipping a switch on the wall, and it also provides ambient mood lighting at night.”

2. Place a bedside water carafe.

“Many guests will need to unwind before bed and a book is relaxing entertainment. Guests also love the feeling of exploring when they’re away from home, and books are the perfect discovery.”

4. Fold a cozy throw and place it at the foot of the bed. “A throw is essential on chilly nights, and visually adds interest through texture and color while elevating the comfy factor of the room.”

5. Add fresh flowers and a candle to create a calming atmosphere. “Scent is connected to emotion and perception. A clean, light scent is both neutral and pleasing, and florals are an instant mood booster.”

6. Set a small tray for jewelry. “Not only is this a useful piece, but it’s also a luxury and a delightful find for guests who value a safe spot for their jewelry.”

I’ve hosted Thanksgiving more than a handful of times, and once for 17 people while six months pregnant with the flu (the fever spiked while I mashed the potatoes — really). Despite that year, I enjoy entertaining, especially throughout the holiday season. I thrive on creating pretty tablescapes and special place settings for the kids, and while I feel proud to cook the meal, I don’t feel excited to clean afterward. Cue the holiday catering. Why not make this year’s holiday dinner less hectic with a little help from the pros?

1. Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. A feel-good way to start the day and an iconic family tradition. Follow it with the Westminster Dog Show. 2. Make a family gratitude jar. Older kids can write what they’re thankful for on cut-out paper hearts while little ones can color or draw. 3. Design a leaf collage placemat. Gather leaves from outside and glue them to cardstock. Extra points for painting (as shown). 4. Play games. Board games, scavenger hunt, kickball – anything goes. 5. Deliver a treat to a neighbor. Baked goods are always a hit, and even a homemade craft or drawing is appreciated.
