Having grown up wearing school uniforms for most of my life, developing a sense of style and learning how to regard fashion was initially challenging for me. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I really got the concept. What I learned was that fashion is art and fashion is fun and fashion should represent your own personal style. Fashion can reflect your mood, your emotional state or even your politics. But mostly fashion choices should enhance you, who you really are. My mother always said, “Wait long enough and everything old will be new again!” She was right. I’ve seen trends return many years later, perhaps reinterpreted, but essentially the same. Hemlines rise and fall. Color palettes run the spectrum

ON THE MENU Grilled mahi-mahi with a gruyere polenta cake, wilted spinach and glazed baby carrots on a bed of heirloom tomatoes
DIRECTIONS Grill mahi-mahi. Lightly sautee spinach with garlic and shallots. Combine gruyere cheese with polenta. Cool on sheet pan and cut with cookie cutter. Sautee polenta in butter until golden. Sautee baby carrots in butter until tender. Slice heirloom tomatoes. Garnish with lemon and rosemary. 22

Mark says that many of the looks created for the runway are not suitable for real life or are not practical for Bakersfield’s climate.
