AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Bakersfield Lifestyle in 2018. It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our January letter to all of you—talking about resolutions and renewal— and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. There’s a unique perspective that working in publishing brings. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the next year, we’re often already fast forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. TARIFFS IMPACT THE LOCAL AG COMMUNITY, COULD HAVE LONG-TERM REPERCUSSIONS Kern County’s top five producing commodities are table grapes, almonds, citrus, pistachios and dairy. Four of Kern County’s top five commodities carry the highest imposed tariffs. Ag market industry experts estimate tariffs could last from six months to two years. The real worry is that overseas markets will find other sources of supply to replace the tariffed produce. Once the supply chain moves

HOTEL BUILDING BOOM IN BAKERSFIELD CONTINUES According to David Lyman, director of Visit Bakersfield, developers continue to invest in the hotel infrastructure which augers well for selection of Bakersfield by businesses, travelers and convention planners. Five new hotels that will add more than 500 new rooms are in the planning stages. Among the new hotels coming to Bakersfield are a Residence Inn by Marriott, Staybridge Suites, Hyatt Place and Home2suites by Hilton and Homewood Suites. Why all the hotel growth? David feels that Bakersfield is ideally situated as a waypoint for visitors to National Parks Sequoia National Park, Yosemite, Las Vegas and Death Valley. Word must have gotten out among foreign tourists that Bakersfield is friendly, welcoming and conveniently locate.

The young dancers of Bakersfield City Ballet will join other dancers from the Civic Dance Center for the holiday performance of The Nutcracker at Rabobank Arena, Dec. 7-9. The cultural fabric created by the arts community enhances the livability of a city. Bakersfield City Ballet is a pre-professional ballet company that bridges the gap between student and professional dancers. BCB offers excellence in dance training and technique with the addition of valuable performance opportunities. According to Artistic Director Erica Ueberroth, the company aims to inspire the community and foster a love of the performing arts. SOME APPROPRIATE VARIETALS TO CONSIDER… AND WHY? + Beaujolais Nouveau – The first wine of the new vintage is released in
Beaujolais, France, the third Thursday of November, this year Nov. 15, plenty of time for holiday meals. The young gamay pairs perfectly with turkey and trimmings. This wine, originally conceived as a sales tool, is bright, light, fruity and pleasant, but it’s like a shooting star: bright for the holidays, fades fast in the new year. It’s also easy on holiday budgets. Price range is $8 to $20. + Pinot Noir – Another excellent choice to pair with turkey. Pinot
is richer than nouveau, and its complex flavors add another layer to your dinner. My picks: J. Lohr Falcon’s Perch Monterey County. $19); Adelaida Vineyards & Winery 2016 Estate, $35; Fiddlehead Cellars 2014 Seven-Twenty-Eight Santa Rita Hills, $44). + Tempranillo – I’d normally choose a full-bodied cabernet sauvignon
for prime rib, but this year I recommend the Spanish varietal tempranillo, with its richness and depth. Tempranillo has emerged in Paso Robles as perfectly suited to the terroir. My picks: Castoro Cellars 2015 Different wine varietals come in different bottle shapes. The tall, shouldered bottles are generally for reds, while white wines like chardonnay are packaged in the low-shouldered bottles. Beaujolais Nouveau are also found in the low-shouldered bottles.
Reserve, $30; Michael Gill Cellars 2016 “Tantrum,” $45. + Zinfandel – Ham, with its sweet saltiness, calls for a fruity wine, like
a bright, fruit-forward zin. And Paso Robles, one of California’s three great temples to zin, has some excellent choices. My picks: Victor Hugo Winery 2016 Estate Zinfandel, $24; Brochelle Vineyards 2016 Estate Zinfandel, $36; Croad Vineyards 2013 Zinfandel Pure, $44.

But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-the-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.
