There’s a certain excitement that accompanies the advent of fall. Summer is over, the heat has subsided and it’s time to get to work. Somehow the tasks don’t seem onerous because there are so many enjoyable activities that come along with the cooler season. There are football and soccer games, tailgates, performances, road trips and a myriad of other fun things to do. Dining choices include richer entrees and comfort foods, cookies, cakes and pumpkin lattes. Children are considering their Halloween costumes and anxiously awaiting their candy booty. Everything seems abuzz with activity. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! We launched Bakersfield Lifestyle Magazine a year ago in October. What a year it’s been. The festival takes place on Oct. 13-14; admission to the event is free and will feature more than 70 vendors. The Apple Festival has grown considerably since its inception six years ago. The festival is so popular that the location had to be changed to accommodate the increase in attendance. There will a designated kids zone with bounce houses, petting zoos, face painting and so much more. Adult activities include a beer and wine garden, live music, a pie-eating contest and a pie baking contest. The pie-eating contest will be on Saturday, Oct. 13, and the pie baking will happen on Sunday. A car show will

She hopes that events like the Apple Festival will showcase the wonderful town of Tehachapi. “There are a lot of people who come up for the Apple Festival who have never visited Tehachapi," she says. "We’re in the heart of downtown, so they get to see how nice our downtown is—how clean, how friendly the people in Tehachapi are. Just basically enjoy the environment. Originally Bakersfield Baptist Church (built 1930)

KEEP THE FAITH It was in 2008 that German-born chef Robert Alimirzaie became enraptured with the building that once housed First Baptist Church. For 10 years, Robert couldn’t get the old church out of his mind. When he and future partner Carlos Ponce met, Robert shared his ideas. The two dreamed of how their collaboration might take shape. Charles H. Biggar designed the building in a Romanesque/Mission Revival style. Construction was completed in 1931. Mercifully, Charles utilized reinforced decorative concrete to build the church, which enabled it to survive the 1952 earthquake. After several prior iterations, the old church has donned yet another guise. Robert and Carlos’ vision became a reality, and The Tower opened in April of this year. OLD TESTAMENT TO NEW The partners wanted a new, sleek, modern look for the old space. They called upon friend and fellow restaurateur Shai Gordon to design the bar area and revamp the narthex. The huge clerestory nave still inspires with a gleaming contemporary vibe. The walls are studded with stained glass windows that glow with light. The Romanesque windows along the lower row in the nave are original to the church. The larger windows of the upper row were replaced at a later time. At Tower, Robert wanted to create a different experience where guests could dine on a wonderful meal and have fun with their friends. He feels that quality ingredients are key with an emphasis on freshness. Presentation is important; not fussy, just delicious.

The wine list offers a host of excellent selections. The menus will change every three months and will feature seasonal ingredients. Both the bar and wine menus will change every four months. AMEN The Tower’s food and atmosphere are worthy of the praise the new restaurant has been receiving. Robert is indeed a high priest among culinary masters.
