Lifestyle Letter
'Tis the Season DECEMBER 2017 ‘Tis the season for giving, for time with friends and family and love. Time for the magic of the holiday season to transform our hearts and minds, wash away the worries of everyday life, work and the troubles of the world. Time to count our blessings, reach out to those less fortunate, time to renew relationships and form new ones. It is a time to care about each other and our community. Time to remember those we’ve lost and those we’ve gained. Thank you, Bakersfield for your warm embrace. We love you, too. We are so grateful to our new hometown and promise to reward you with better and better issues as we grow. We believe in our neighbors, and we value our friends and family. Thank you to our partners who had faith in us as we were just beginning. We promise to do our best. Thanks also to our amazingly talented contributors—you’ve helped make our dream come to life. Together we can meet the challenges that might await us in the new year, no matter how difficult. But for now, let’s just rejoice and celebrate. Wishing you all the joy of the season! It is, after all, the most wonderful time of year!

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE Valley Republic Bank Invests in Bakersfield ARTICLE A.P. WHYTE "It’s A Wonderful Life," the great 1946 Frank Capra Christmas movie, features protagonist George
Bailey who presides over his family’s small-town community bank, Bailey Building and Loan. The bank’s primary business was mortgages, neighbors investing in neighbors. The narrative revolves around a series of misfortunes resulting in despair and finally, redemption and in a way, a morality tale of banking. In the end, good triumphs over evil, generosity over greed and love over malice. CONTINUED >

WONDERFUL LIFE (CON TI N U ED)
"Our exceptional success is a tribute to this community that is home to all of us," Bruce says. "We are intentionally ‘uncommon' about servicing our customers and investing in the community. In our town, relationships matter.” Bruce Jay, President & CEO, Valley Republic Bank
Valley Republic Bank THOUGH "IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE" WAS MADE MORE THAN 70 YEARS AGO, SOME OF THOSE OLD TIME VALUES STILL EXIST HERE IN BAKERSFIELD. NEIGHBORS ARE STILL INVESTING IN NEIGHBORS. The idea came to Bruce Jay for a new bank because he felt the Bakersfield community was underserved. He assembled a powerhouse of local leaders to serve on the board of directors and, together with an executive team, they set about to form Valley Republic Bank. They filed the application and raised the necessary capital, despite the fact that the financial industry was beginning to collapse. In the midst of the calamity, Bruce and team forged ahead. They believed in the dream of creating a personal bank based on relationships with their neighbors and investing in the community The FDIC approved the application in 2008 and Valley Republic opened the doors in February 2009. Like George Bailey, the VRB team was facing a situation where the public had lost confidence in the banking industry and the stock market was in shambles. And yet, in just a little more than eight years, Valley Republic Bank’s total assets have grown to earn a coveted spot in the top 20 percent of all U.S. banks.
