THE STYLE ISSUE

starring Shaun & Lindsey Morgan Sipos

The Style Issue

Style runs deeper than fashion. To me, personal style is the way a person carries themselves. It’s confidence and radiance, a swagger, a glow, and the way it makes people around them not only take notice, but feel better because they did.

This issue is packed with people who have impeccable style, and those who help people realize their own style. Our cover features actors Lindsey Morgan Sipos and Shaun Sipos. Lindsey’s a UT grad who went to LA -and brought Shaun back with her. The couple, currently celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary, now call Austin home – and Lindsey shares that Shaun was quick to adapt, especially when it came to buying his first pair of cowboy boots.

We did the cover shoot at The Frances Modern Inn and I was so inspired by owner Vicki Faust, a chameleon of a woman who wins for best accessory – her ‘hotel dog’ Bailey. They’re pure joy. I was also inspired this month by Brooke Taylor, owner of The Road. I’ll dive deeper with her in a future issue, but this month she shares the benefits of an unusual facial treatment.

Melissa Baker did a piece for us on how to tailor your jeans using a few household items (follow her at @Amellionmoves for more fashion hacks!) and our favorite fashionable entrepreneurs (and philanthropists) Kendra Scott and Stephanie Coultress O’Neill share their selections for Fall fashion staples.

Elsewhere we share a peak inside 3D-printed home company ICON’s latest development and EV carmaker Rivian’s showroom - and we take you on a ‘club’ tour.  These clubs include a club to get styled a la Pretty Woman (Fifth Avenue Club), a club where you can casually dine in a swimming pool (Swim Club) and a club that marries South African wine and sushi (Flight Club).

I hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. See you back next month for the Food Issue! Cheers,

September 2024

WHERE AUSTIN GETS ENGAGED

The Art of Qi Beauty

Treatment at The Road puts you on the path to internal well-being and external radiance

It looks like face art, but the Qi Beauty Matrix is much more functional than fodder for a photo. To learn more, we spoke to Brooke Taylor, founder of The Road, where they offer a combination of East meets West treatments that leave their guests feeling as good on the inside as they look on the outside.

She explains this specific treatment “is a unique skin recovery method that combines principles of acupuncture points and meridians in combination with magnetic therapy. The treatment was designed not only with aesthetic benefits in mind but also overall health.” Brooke delves deeper to explain, “We place 1000 small, 24-carat gold-plated magnets directly on

the skin in a unique configuration called The Matrix. The type of Matrix used is individually tailored to your specific skin needs, no two treatments are ever the same. Once placed on the skin, the magnets communicate between each other, creating a controlled Static Magnetic Field, activating skin regeneration on a cellular and quantum level. We are working with the facial landscape to correct imbalances and restore homeostasis in the skin and even the underlying muscle. The Qi beauty practitioner is skilled in the Art of Qi to customize the treatment to lift, re-densify and re-connect faulty signaling for pro-health age control.”

Once the matrix is in place, they’re left on for about 20 minutes. Brooke says, “Most people find this highly relaxing and often drift off during the placement phase.” Afterward, she says people will immediately notice “a brightening and luminosity from within tissues, reduction in lines, fullness of skin where there was crepe around the eyes or cheeks, and a visible improvement in the tone and appearance of skin.”

DIVE INTO THE SWIM CLUB

The actual hotel pool has been converted into the dining area at this colorful and fun ‘club’

If you spent time in Austin over the summer you’ve probably heard about the swim club, the uber-cute restaurant in the Downright Hotel. Outfitted in turquoise and pink, the unique spot is owned by Travis Tober, co-owner of acclaimed East Austin bar Nickel City and Murray’s Tavern. He’s said, “Swim Club is designed to be fun and flirty, a laid-back space where we hope guests can come in and lose themselves for a while.”

The drink menu boasts creatively named cocktails such as Performance Anxiety, Sharks in the Water,

Skinny Dippin’ and Tan Lines. And, the non-alcoholic options aren’t boring, Love Potion #9 is made with n/a gin, Honey Dew Better is crafted with Seedlip and Pretty Basic is anything but with almave n/a “tequila”, ginger-turmeric, lime, grapefruit, agave. The food is more typical poolside fair with a selection of tacos, burgers, salads and pizza.

After your meal you’re welcome to go for a swim –just remember to give yourself time to digest.

LOVE & LIFE SIPOS-STYLE

GETTING TO KNOW THIS STUNNING COUPLE DURING A FALL FASHION SHOOT AT THE FRANCES MODERN INN

Lindsey Morgan Sipos says being back in Austin (since late 2020) is a full-circle moment. Lindsey went to University of Texas in Austin and was an extra on “Friday Night Lights.” Following graduation she went to Los Angeles to pursue acting, but after stints on “General Hospital,” several seasons on sci-fi drama “The 100” and more (including meeting her now husband Shaun Sipos!), she returned to Austin when she was cast in “Walker.” Shaun Sipos, originally from Canada, you’ve seen on TV since 2001 – in the “Melrose Place” reboot, “Vampire Diaries” and “Krypton” or more recently on “Outer Range” and “Reacher.” He didn’t hesitate moving to Austin, telling Austin Lifestyle, “I wasn’t going to let this one get away.”

Indeed he didn’t. Lindsey and Shaun got married at Camp Lucy in Texas Hill Country one year ago this month. We had a chat about marriage, style and more. Of Shaun’s style Lindsey says, “Shaun has gone full cowboy. I think one of the first things he did when we moved here was source authentic boots.”

WHAT’S BEEN THE GREATEST PART ABOUT YOUR FIRST YEAR OF MARRIAGE?

L: Two weeks after we got married we had a family emergency and one of the scariest moments of my life. Having Shaun there for me in a way that I’ve never had anyone support and love me has shown me the testament and sanctity of marriage. He’s with me through it all.

S: I take comfort in knowing we’re committed. I know Lindsey is someone who’s not going to jump ship just because the water gets rough. She has character and integrity that’s evident to everyone who knows her. I look forward to writing a lifelong story together that’s beyond words.

DID YOU NOTICE ANYTHING CHANGE FROM BEING ENGAGED TO BEING MARRIED?

L: Shaun stepped it up to a new level, I didn’t know that kind of love was possible.

He is such an incredible leader in our family and partner by my side.

S: I noticed a shift in myself, I think it was our connection being solidified. I’m a Christian, so it’s my belief that when we’re married, we’re joined and made one, so any sort of selfishness on my part would be akin to say, working out only one side of the body and not the other. It just wouldn’t make sense, so every day I aim to lift her up and nourish her.

WHAT

DO

YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT LIFE IN AUSTIN?

L: Since I left Texas to pursue acting I’ve been a gypsy just following the work. It’s been such a blessing to be able to live here again in such a great city and finally be close to my family.

S: I love it here and there’s a lot that I like— mainly just how kind people are, they’ll wave when driving by, ask how you’re doing in the grocery store, that makes a difference. In a lot of cities you can be surrounded by people and still feel alone, but that’s not the case here.

DO YOU THINK AUSTIN IS WHERE YOU WANT TO SETTLE DOWN?

L: Yes. I needed to lay down some roots after 12 years of gypsy circus life in the industry and Austin is such a great place for raising kids. My dream is to have our home base here and have a little getaway on the west coast during the summer months.

THIS IS THE STYLE ISSUE…HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

L: My style tends to be “situational time capsule.” I’m not sure if it’s by accident or because I am actor, but I tend to dress for my environment, whether that’s a date night flirty number or a functional athleisure workout look…I once didn’t buy any clothes for a year and it really helped me build my capsule wardrobe. I invest in more staple items, but I’m also beginning to source more individual, unique vintage pieces to mix and match.

S: I was an all-black for the most part kind of guy. Lindsey’s changed my wardrobe for the better.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ‘FAVORITE PIECES’ IN YOUR WARDROBE?

L: My cross-body sage Bottega bag that has become my spring, summer, fall and even winter everyday purse. It’s a staple with a unique pop of color. And a reversible camel alpaca fur suede bomber jacket made in the 1970s I scored in a NY vintage store for $100. I don’t get to wear it as much in Austin, but it’s a prize possession.

S: Probably my cowboy boots and a good pair of jeans. I like when it gets a little chilly and I can layer.

WHOSE STYLE DO YOU ADMIRE?

L: Rihanna. Hands down. If I could, I would dress like her, but I don’t think I could.

S: Probably David Gandy, or old-school Paul Newman. .

WHAT SHOW HAVE YOU HAD THE MOST FUN ON?

L: That is such a tough one, “Walker” was honestly one of the best casts and crew around, everyone had such a sense of humor and fantastic energy.

S: I’ve been so blessed with the past three shows I’ve been on, they all fostered such creative freedom. It started with “Krypton.” It blows my mind that we had that cast for that show. I’d work with them any day of the week. Then “Outer Range”, again, Amazing cast and everyone involved is incredible, absolute pros. And then “Reacher,” some of the best in the business. I’ve made incredible and hopefully lifelong friends on these projects and I look forward to working with them over and over again.

LINDSEY, YOU LEFT “WALKER” SEASON 2 TO FOCUS ON YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. ARE YOU READY TO GET BACK TO ACTING?

L: I feel finally ready and excited to embrace acting and directing again, so I am excited to see what this next chapter holds.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU DO FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

L: I’m huge on mental health and all modalities of healing. For me, it’s a blend of meditation, journaling, prayer, moving my body, be it strength training or lower intensity workouts, cold plunging, sleeping, talk and somatic therapy and overall, just following my joy…what makes ME happy and peaceful.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT?

L: A dream of mine was to create an actor’s repertoire here in Austin, a place for all the actors in town to workshop their work as a creative collective and hopefully put up a play ourselves. We are officially starting it in September and potentially calling it Playhouse Tex!

S: I just did a spot on a new Kurt Sutter show called “The Abandons” with Lena Headey that I’m looking forward to seeing. I’m not sure the debut date, but it will be on Netflix.

IF YOU COULD BE ON ANY SHOW, WHICH WOULD IT BE?

L: I think I would have loved to be on a show like “Sex and the City” or “Insecure,” the women on there were so iconic and it seemed like such a great time. The adventure side of me always loved “Altered Carbon,” a mix of sci-fi and action and great stunts.

S: For comedies, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” or “Arrested Development” would be my coin toss. For drama: “Peaky Blinders” all the way.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO PROMOTE?

L: I have a fun role in an upcoming film my good friend and fellow Austinite Alexandra Chando directed starring Phoebe Tonkin and Darren Mann, called “And On The 8th Day” that’ll be debuting soon, so be on the lookout for that.

S: Let’s promote the very difficult task of showing love/ kindness to others who disagree with you. Instead of vitriol, talk with kindness and patience. We’ve really lost that lately and it’s a vital part of what’s made this country such a beacon of freedom, hope and prosperity.

THE FRANCES MODERN INN’S VICKI FAUST IS FULL OF FASCINATING CHAPTERS –AND HER DOG BAILEY IS PRETTY AMAZING TOO

Remarkable Renaissance Woman

Vicky “Frances” Faust says she moved from Pennsylvania (after receiving an MBA in Economics - and an MBA and MPA) to Austin in 1983 and opened her first business – a snow cone truck – and she never looked back. She went to UT, studied accounting and in 1990 sat for all four parts of the CPA at the same time (which is virtually unheard of) – and she passed. In 1993 she started a full-service accounting firm in a 1963 Airstream called the TaxTrailer where she served over 1,000 clients. She’s continued to do annual taxes for some clients and also delved into flipping real estate and co-owned the Kimber Modern Hotel in SoCo and Driftwood, a substance abuse and pain recovery center. Currently, her only properties are The Frances Modern Inn, which opened January 2022 (originally under the name The Cat Noir), and houses Krystal Craig and Ian Thurwachter popular restaurant Poeta as well as gelato truck Piccolo, and the home she shares with her wife Lissa Patrizi and her 2-year-old dog Bailey, who can frequently be found at The Frances Modern.

“He’s just a love bucket!” Vicki says, “He’s part of the spreading the love mission, he just does it so naturally and so many people are so comforted by him and with him.”  She credits her ‘spiritually gifted daughter’ Kenna Chris, who currently lives in Bali, and her wife with opening the spirituality door for her and clarifying the Inn’s love mission, that she hopes is felt by each person who visits.

The name of the inn was inspired by Vicki’s paternal grandmother. “She was the kindest, most

loving, modest woman I ever met,” Vicki says. “She taught me by example how to really listen and always made me feel like the most important person in the room.”

Like with the name, Vicki says her vision for the hotel was to “bring in some old” and mix it with the new modern building. She explains, “I like the mix of old and new both architecturally and emotionally and spiritually. I think there’s a lot of the past that we can bring into the present to make the future better, so I’ve tried to create a place that is very cozy, giving people comfort I think they need, especially right now. I’ve realized more and more that we have a tremendous platform to spread love and kindness and make people feel welcome and cared for in a very uncertain, uncaring world.”

In the redesign of the hotel she says, “I wanted it saturated with color and décor. Kim Lewis Design did a fantastic job and bringing my vision to life.”

And, you can often find her eating downstairs in Poeta where she says, “I’m in love with one of their lesser-known dishes, the liver mousse appetizer. I pair it with the grilled Caesar. I eat pretty light and it’s perfect!”

As for the next chapter, Vicki says, “I maintain a small tax practice - mostly family and friends and some clients that I’ve had for 30 years who I can’t abandon now. I will probably keep that going. I think retirement for me will still be working a little bit of tax and a little bit at the inn, but more cherry-picking.”

HOW TO TAILOR YOUR JEANS AT HOME IF THE WAIST IS TOO BIG

Hi, I’m Melissa Baker. I grew up in the Bronx, NY facing a lot of adversity that forced me to think quickly on my feet, especially when it came to styling my clothes. I had to make do with what I had. Now, as an adult, I share my tips and hacks with my community on social media. You can find me on all platforms as @amellionmoves. Today, I’ll show you a simple and effective way to tailor your jeans at home if the waist is too big using just a shoelace and a few household items. All you need is:

• Pants or jeans that are too big at the waist

• Scissors or a razor

• Shoelace

• A straw or a safety pin

Steps to Tailor Your Jeans

Melissa Baker

PREPARE THE SHOELACE

CUT HOLES

First, you need to cut holes in the waist of the jeans. Start by turning your jeans inside out. Using scissors or a razor, cut small, evenly spaced slits along the inside of the waistband. Be careful not to cut through both layers of fabric; you just need to cut through the inner layer.

Take a shoelace and insert one end into a straw. This will help you guide the shoelace through the waistband more easily. Alternatively, you can attach a safety pin to the end of the shoelace and use it to thread the lace through the waistband.

THREAD & SECURE THE SHOELACE

Using the straw or safety pin, thread the shoelace through the slits you made in the waistband. Continue threading until the shoelace comes out the other end of the waistband…Once the shoelace is fully threaded through the waistband, tie a knot at each end to prevent it from slipping back through the holes.

02 03 04

TRY THEM ON

Put your jeans on and pull the ends of the shoelace to adjust the waist to your desired size. Tie the shoelace in a bow or knot to secure the fit.

And there you have it—a simple, no-sew way to tailor your jeans at home! This hack is perfect for those quick fixes and ensures your jeans fit perfectly every time.

Falling for Brown Hues

Embrace the colors of the season with a deep neutral color palette

As we transition into fall, the color brown re-emerges as a dominant trend in both women’s and men’s fashion. This warm, earthy hue perfectly complements the season’s natural palette, and for those who know me, this is one of my favorite colors. Various shades of brown, including rich chocolate and espresso tones, can be seen in many collections this season.

For women, a brown leather top can combine the luxury of leather with the versatility of a neutral tone.  Pair it with jeans for a casual look or a skirt for a more polished ensemble.  Don’t be afraid to wear head-to-toe brown this season, monochromatic outfits are timeless.

Men can embrace this trend with chocolate brown jeans, which offer a refreshing alternative to traditional denim. The rich, deep color pairs well with many different shirts.
