HEALTH & WELLNESS ISSUE Nurturing my physical and mental health is a daily practice for me. Subsequently, this issue, where I can share local people, places and products in the space is one of my favorites of the year. In these pages, you’ll find an interview and recipe from Erin Stewart, a power entrepreneur with a passion for fitness and nutrition who combined both into the Savor + Sweat app, providing subscribers with a library of regularly updated workouts and clean recipes for full-body wellness. You’ll meet Cynthia Bernard, who you may already know as ATX Yoga Girl. If you haven’t experienced one of her healing sound baths, would suggest making 2024 the year you change that. She regularly hosts sound baths at The Four Seasons Hotel - the host of our cover shoot with Gabby Thomas and one of the spas we share in a feature that also includes Viva Day Spa and the spa at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines, specifically their QMS Facial. Back to our cover story – never have I had so many amazing cover options to choose from than from the gorgeous shoot with Olympic track star Gabby Thomas. Gabby is in a class of her own – she has a bachelor's degree in Neurobiology from Harvard and a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Texas. She’s training for the Paris Olympics, but still finds time to volunteer at a clinic, spend time with friends and get an average nine hours of sleep each night. Dig into our interview and it will leave you in awe and inspired to do more with your 2024. Another great tool I found to kick start the new year is a book by philosopher Brian Johnson called Arete: Activate Your Heroic Potential. It summarizes hundreds of the best self-development ideas into bite-size chapters and has a companion app that helps me be incrementally better each day. I hope your new year is starting out strong! Wishing everyone health and happiness. Cheers,

Erin Stewart’s app brings a food & fitness expert into your home

Trained as a natural food chef and professional dancer, culinary and fitness entrepreneur Erin Stewart has an admirable resume. Her pilates and barre classes were sought after in New York City, where she also spent time working in the kitchen at NYC’s legendary Pure Food & Wine. She’s also had a successful food delivery service and wholesome cookie company. Today Erin, who lives in Austin with her husband and two sons, is channeling her energy into Savor + Sweat, a lifestyle platform with an ever-growing library of workouts (200 with new content dropping every week!) and healthy recipes (over 100) and fuses her passions for food, fitness and desire to help women live optimally.

DO YOU CREATE YOUR OWN RECIPES?

WHAT KIND OF WORKOUTS ARE ON THE APP?

I pride myself in making delicious, elegant-looking dishes as approachable as possible! I will continue to develop a recipe until my initial 15+ ingredient creation is cut in half and takes on average 30 minutes to come together before it’s ready for the app.

My method combines sculpting exercises, cardio and mobility that are based on moving to feel good and creating long-lean lines with a focus on posture, form, building muscle tone and endurance. The classes range from 10 minutes to 50 minutes and include athletic barre, dance cardio, HIIT, step cardio, bounce, and stretch & flow classes.

HOW MANY DAYS/WEEK DO YOU THINK THE AVERAGE HEALTHY PERSON SHOULD WORK OUT?

My recommendation is to aim to incorporate strength training and cardio at least 3-4 days/week with proper rest and recovery between sessions to allow the body to adapt, improve, and to prevent injuries. My HIIT Mat, Athletic Barre using heavy weights, Step and Dance Cardio classes are all great options to choose from on these days. The remaining 3-4 days/week, I recommend alternating slower-paced Athletic Barre, Pilates or Flow classes using your own body weight, resistance bands or lower weights to keep the body moving and promote length and tone. Aside from the fact that regular exercise has numerous physical benefits, from cardiovascular health to maintaining a healthy weight, moving daily boosts mood, reduces feelings of stress and anxiety and improves sleep quality and confidence, so fit in what you can but do something every day.

SHOULD PEOPLE BE STACKING SHORTIES?

I highly recommend stacking Sizzles! My intention when creating my 10-15 minute sizzles was to keep your workouts fun and interesting. You can create your own full body class by stacking an upper body-focused sizzle with a lower body and finishing off with a cardio sizzle, for example. Mix and match depending on the time you have or what you’re feeling that day.

I d o ! I a m a t r a i n e d n a t u r a l fo o d s c h e f a n d r e c i p e d e ve l o p e r.

HOW MANY RECIPES DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ON THE APP?

Currently, there are over 100 recipes ranging from appetizers, soups, breakfasts, dinners, condiments and desserts. You can filter by season, type of dish, dietary restriction or search specific ingredients.

ON AVERAGE, HOW LONG DO YOUR RECIPES TAKE TO MAKE?

ARE THE RECIPES ALL ‘HEALTHY’?

All of my recipes are based on a whole foods, health-forward approach rich in nutrient-dense, colorful foods with some animal proteins that are raised without antibiotics or hormones. I strive to recommend non-inflammatory ingredients that optimize the body and support a variety of eating styles. You won’t see any dairy, much gluten or find highly processed oils like canola or grapeseed, or refined sugars. I do love my sweets (big chocolate fan!) and I hope that Savor + Sweat introduces you to new alternative ingredients that might be next-level or healing for you and also satisfyingly delicious.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE GOLDEN BEET + FORBIDDEN RICE SALAD RECIPE TO SHARE?

My Golden Beet + Forbidden Rice Salad is seasonally appropriate and quintessentially root to stem cooking using the entire vegetable. It’s a fresh, hearty and bright dish that you can make in advance and only tastes better as it sits and the ingredients marinate so it’s super weeknight practical but also crowd-pleasing with just a little bit of prep. This grain bowl can stand on its own or as a plant-based entree or can accompany your favorite protein, like flaked wild salmon. The CitrusMiso Dressing is delicious on any roasted veg or tossed greens so double the batch to have on hand. Erin regularly teaches in real life workouts. Keep up on where she’ll be on Instagram at @SavorSweat, check out her website https://savorandsweat.com, and of course, download the Savor + Sweat app.

GOLDEN BEET AND FORBIDDEN RICE SALAD WITH ORANGE MISO DRESSING Ingredients:

• 1 cup forbidden black rice • 4 medium golden beets, scrubbed and quartered (reserving beet tops) • 3 shallots, chopped • 1-2 Tbsp extra virgin oil • Sea salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 small navel oranges, peeled and chopped • 4 green onion, thinly sliced • ¼ cusp walnuts, roasted and chopped • 2 Tbsp sweet miso • 1 tbsp minced fresh garlic • ¼ cup fresh orange juice • Splash apple cider vinegar • 3-4 Tbsp extra virgin oil • ½-1 tsp honey

12

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F IT N E SS

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 F. Line a sheet pan with foil. To cook the rice… Place the rice with 1 ¾ cups water and a good pinch of sea salt into a medium pot. Bring to a boil, lower to a simmer, cover and allow to cook for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to sit with the lid on. Fluff with a fork prior to serving. Meanwhile, toss the chopped beets with the shallots, olive oil, sea salt and pepper. Spread evenly onto one half of the sheet pan. Roast until cooked through and fork tender, about 20-25 minutes. Remove the beets from the oven and allow to cool. To make the dressing… Process all of the ingredients in a food processor or blender. Thin to liking with more orange juice, as needed, until mixture coats the black of a spoon. Toss the beets and shallots with the rice and a couple Tbsp of the dressing. Fold in the green onion, orange pieces and a handful of beet greens. Sprinkle in the walnuts and serve.

Make Your Own at-Home Cold Plunge Wim Hof, aka The Iceman, has been preaching the benefits of cold water immersion for years. More recently, the practice has seeped into the wellness community and withstanding freezing temperatures for an average of three minutes has become a popular practice with benefits including enhanced circulation, reduced muscle inflammation and improved recovery. Wellness enthusiasts who can afford them will spend $5,000-$10,000 or more to have one in their home for daily use. Rather than spend a fortune to freeze, you can make your own cold plunge from a meat freezer for much less. Athlete Jonathan Cervi shared a now viral step-by-step video on TikTok. He tells Austin Lifestyle he started by buying a freezer from Best Buy for under $400 and a $35 temperature controller for optimal regulation. He says, “If you are considering going for it—do it. Life’s short and investing in your health is always a good idea.” Find his video on TikTok @jonathancervi.

2. Clean the interior thoroughly using a mild detergent and water. Ensure the interior is completely dry with a clean cloth, 3. Apply clear silicone sealant: Load a clear silicone sealant cartridge into a caulking gun. Starting from one corner, apply a continuous bead of silicone along seams, joints, and edges inside the freezer. Use a caulking tool or your finger to smooth out the sealant for an even finish. Allow the sealant to cure completely.

4. Install the temperature controller: Identify a suitable exterior location for mounting the temperature controller, ensuring it reaches the center of the water when inserted. Securely mount the temperature controller and connect the controller to the power source and the freezer’s electrical system. 5. Connect water supply and thermometer: Attach a water hose to the designated inlet on the freezer for filling and draining. 6. Optional Water Treatment: If desired, add water treatment products to maintain cleanliness and prevent bacterial or algae growth. Follow recommended dosage instructions provided with the water treatment products. 7. Test and Adjust:Power on the freezer and the temperature controller. Test the temperature controller’s functionality by adjusting settings and monitoring water temperature. Make necessary adjustments to achieve your desired cold plunge temperature. 8. Enjoy the Benefits of Cold Plunging: With everything set up and tested, you’re now ready to enjoy the invigorating benefits of your DIY cold plunge.

at the spa at the Four Seasons Austin Hotel

If one were to prompt AI software to print the perfect person, Gabby Thomas may be what pops out. An elite athlete, Gabby took home a bronze medal at her first major track meet during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. A brilliant scholar, Gabby received her bachelor's degree in Neurobiology from Harvard and a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Texas. She wants to use her degrees to help people access healthcare. She also takes care to look after her own mental health, prioritizing sleep, nurturing friendships and embracing the mental health benefits that come with being mom to her dog Rico. And to state the obvious - she’s supermodel beautiful. We spent an afternoon with Gabby at the Four Seasons Hotel Austin where she dove into the impetus behind her degrees, training for the Paris Olympics, some of her favorite things in and about Austin and more.

WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN THOSE FIELDS OF STUDY? WHAT’S THE DREAM POST-RUNNING.

I went into neurobiology because I knew I wanted to do that since I was a junior in high school. Initially, I wanted to do research on autism and figure out how I could serve that community when I graduated. I ended up doing some research at Harvard but in addition to my neuro courses, I also took some sociology courses and started to learn a bit about disparities and health outcomes in the country. That’s when I realized that I wanted to shift my focus more towards public health. I’m still interested in the neurobiology field, and I do think it’s helpful to have that strong science background, but tackle it from a different angle. I’ve now decided I want to go into hospital administration, and still be in the healthcare field and a healthcare setting, but work on it in a way where I can help people who need it the most, people who are under-resourced,

or people who don’t have health insurance, or people who aren’t aware or educated on the healthcare system. When I graduated from Harvard it was with my major in Neurobio and my minor in Global Health and Health Policy. Then I applied for my masters at UT and I knew I wanted to focus on health disparities, but I found myself migrating towards epidemiology. It’s very data-focused and felt like a good fit for me. I’m so passionate about it and I feel like I’ve put myself in the position where I can make a difference. Since graduating, since I’m still running, I want to stay in the field so I’ve been working at the healthcare clinic. I started volunteering there when I moved to Austin because I wanted to stay involved and be in the field and understand what was happening in real time. After graduating I started working there and now I have a caseload of patients and we follow up with them and make sure they’re getting access to healthcare, medication, education, nutritionists, whatever they need. These are patients who don’t have health insurance and mostly black and brown people from low-income communities. It’s really rewarding and I like doing it. I’ll be running for the foreseeable future, probably the next ten years, but for now I’m really happy doing that.

HOW MANY HOURS/WEEK DO YOU DEDICATE TO TRAINING?

When we’re out of season I’m probably dedicating about 20 hours a week towards running, which isn’t too bad. When we start competing and traveling on top of training it becomes your entire life pretty much. It varies on the time of season and on what I’m trying to get out of the sport, if I’m in a place that I want to be competing every week, if I want to travel abroad and run some Diamond League races and tune up, or if I want to take time to be at home and recover and have some relaxation after a hard training week.

“I landed on Austin because I loved the group of girls, I loved my coach and it’s an environment where I could thrive. And UT! Austin was a perfect fit for me.” CONTINUED >

Writing it down

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT RUNNING GOALS? THE PARIS OLYMPICS?

Oh my gosh, yeah. I feel like for the Paris Olympics, a gold medal. I have really grown into a mature athlete these last couple of years. I had my breakout year at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and that was my first time making the US Team. It happened to be on the biggest stage and I felt so new and so young and I wasn’t super familiar with the sport of track and field, coming from Harvard and not being around other pro athletes, so everything came at me really quickly. But, I got a bronze medal. The next year I went through an injury, which was really heartbreaking, but unfortunately, it’s part of the sport and it’s about how you bounce back from that. This last season I got a silver medal at the World Championships and it was my first time competing on a world stage with everyone there and all the people and actually experiencing it the way you’re supposed to experience it and I feel like I grew a lot and gained a lot of experience this past season. So, I feel really strong going into the Olympics. I feel like I know what I’m capable of and I know how to compete, how to bring my best self and how to prepare for it. I’m looking forward to applying it to next year. I think I’ll be in really good shape.

YOU TORE YOUR HAMSTRING, WHAT WAS COMING BACK FROM THAT LIKE?

Tearing my hamstring was really hard and heartbreaking, mainly because it happened at such an untimely time for me. I was pushing my body past its limits, past where I ever had before and I was running really fast in preparation for trials. I just pushed it a little too far and my hamstring snapped. It was a really hard thing to mentally come to terms with, especially for someone like me who is constantly trying to work my way towards being a success, work towards greatness. You can’t work your way out of an injury. I just had to be very patient with it and I had to miss out on the World Championships and watch everyone else run

and run better. But, I came back at the end of the season and I ended my season pretty well. I had to go back to the drawing board during the off-season and come back the next year and just keep that positive mentality. I trained throughout the whole year knowing that I didn’t medal the previous year.

SO MUCH GOES INTO COMPETING AT SUCH AN ELITE LEVEL, HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THAT POSITIVITY AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

A lot goes into it and it’s every single day, it’s not just a month of the year, it’s constant in everything you’re doing, so mental health is really important because it keeps you motivated and on track. For me, I really, really like meditation. I think it’s huge and I suggest it to everyone who asks me about what I do and how I prepare. I do it every morning and I incorporate it into my competition warm-up.

DO YOU USE A GUIDED MEDITATION APP?

I personally don’t use an app, I just focus on breathing exercises and visualization, but it’s the same idea. On top of meditation, I think it’s really important to spend time with friends. I like to be outside and doing things. It can be really easy to get wrapped up in track & field and stay inside your house like a hermit and just be stressed out, but I do a good job of making an effort to be around people who take my mind off work, make me happy and have a positive energy around them. I play with my dog, of course. I love him. Coming home to him every day just lightens my mood instantly. Other recovery things that keep me feeling good are eating well, and maintaining a good sleep schedule, which I think is the biggest thing.

WHAT’S YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?

My morning routine is essentially waking up, doing breathing exercises and mediation and drinking a lot of water. I probably drink a quarter of a gallon just in

21

the morning. Then I walk Rico and get coffee, because I love coffee, it’s one of the little things that I look forward to every day. Those small wins make up a good day.

WHAT’S YOUR REGULAR WORKOUT ROUTINE?

We generally warm-up for 45 minutes to an hour.

THAT’S MOST PEOPLE’S ENTIRE WORKOUT.

Literally, when I first got there that’s what I thought, but it prevents injuries. Our training in the fall is longer running, so we might do a mile, just basically running forever. When we get into the season it’s more sprinting. Then we’ll do an ab circuit, maybe a plyometrics circuit, cool down and after that recovery stuff like cold plunge, sauna and hyperbaric chamber.

HYPERBARIC CHAMBERS SEEM TO BE GAINING POPULARITY.

I love the hyperbaric chamber, I bought one for my apartment. You enclose yourself in it and it’s pure oxygen getting into your bloodstream at a higher pressure, so it helps you recover a lot faster. I love it, I do an hour a day. It’s relaxing.

WHAT’S YOUR SLEEP ROUTINE?

My sleep routine is very strict. I refuse to get less than eight hours a night. Everybody is different, but I need at least eight hours every night, sometimes I’ll get ten. I try to limit blue light and I don’t watch TV before bed. Typically, I’ll get in bed around 10pm, get a book and read a few pages and then go to sleep. I don’t really believe in alarm clocks either, unless I have to be up early for something and I can’t miss it, otherwise I let my body wake up naturally when it wants to.

AND YOU WORK WITH A SLEEP APP?

Indorsia. I’m doing their campaign which is basically making sure everyone is educated and aware about sleep and fighting the stigma on talking about sleep. If you have issues sleeping, it’s okay to address that, it’s not a weird thing to talk about with your doctor. But also addressing the fact that people do need to sleep. I think we have this weird glorification of sleep not being important but in sports if you don’t sleep people assume you’re not taking your job seriously and I think that should apply to everyone in life, no matter what your job is or what you do, so it’s just an awareness campaign.

WHAT LED YOU TO AUSTIN?

When I was graduating from Harvard in 2019 I was looking for an environment where I could really challenge myself in track & field and be around training partners whose goal was also to make the Olympic team. I also wanted to be in a city where I could go to grad school. So, my options were a little bit limited because the way track is, you only have a few training groups around the country that are specialized in your events. I landed on Austin because I loved the group of girls, I loved my coach and it’s an environment where I really felt like I could thrive, emotionally and physically. And UT! Austin was a perfect fit for me.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN AUSTIN?

I love how dog-friendly it is. I love how everyone is pretty outdoorsy. There are so many things you can do here that don’t just revolve around drinking. And the people are just so nice here, it’s such a great community. And the food, of course.

QUICK FIRE WHEN DID YOU GET RICO?

FAVORITE PLACE TO RUN IN AUSTIN?

The trail by the lake, it’s incredible. I’m not a long-distance runner, but when I can I love it.

FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN AUSTIN? I love TenTen, it’s insane, and Hanks

DROPPING in with ATX YOGA GIRL Cynthia Aguillon Bernard is a sound healing practitioner, certified yoga and mindfulness teacher (for adults and kids) and became a Certified Coach of Presence at the Eckhart Tolle School of Awakening. You probably know her as ATX Yoga Girl. Her mission is to help people integrate more holistic practices into their daily lives, on and off the mat, to live a more conscious and present lifestyle.

UPCOMING EVENTS

WHAT IS A SOUND BATH? A Sound Bath is a deeply immersive, full-body listening experience where participants are “bathed” in sound waves (vibrations) from various healing instruments such as Tibetan or Crystal bowls, chimes, and gongs to help nurture their mind and body. Each instrument emits a different frequency, creating harmonic vibrations meant to stimulate the alpha and theta brain waves, which are associated with deep meditative and peaceful states and are highly conducive to healing. This allows your brain waves to slow, shifting from a more active state to a more relaxed, even dreamlike state. Although sound baths may seem new to many, the practice of healing through sound is thousands of years old with deep roots in cultures across the world.

WHY DO YOU CALL THEM COSMIC NAPS? Some people feel so relaxed they feel like they have taken a nap and feel energized afterward. This inner connection along with participants sharing their visions, a floating like sensation, losing track of time, colors they see and deeper sense of presence within is where I coined the name “Cosmic Nap.”

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN

On the healing benef its of sound baths & starting mindf ullness young.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LEADING SOUND BATHS? Since 2019. After attending my first one in 2014, I knew that I had to learn more about the overall benefits and ultimately share them with my community. I’d never felt that connected to my body and so present. I lost track of time and released so much tension in my body. I began adding a mini sound bath to the end of my yoga classes in 2018 and then it turned into longer sessions that I share now.

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF SOUND BATHS? Because how we take in and interpret sounds varies, everyone is going to have a different experience and benefits. Sound has a unique quality to harmonize, rebalance and synchronize the body’s internal rhythm and help to regulate the nervous system. Research has shown that these sessions can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, lower blood pressure and help you feel a deeper sense of relaxation.

HOW LONG IS AN AVERAGE SOUND BATH? Even a 15 minute sound bath break can shift your day, but to truly settle in your body, opt towards 30-60 minutes.

HOW OLD DO YOU THINK IS A GOOD AGE FOR CHILDREN TO START LEARNING YOGA AND MEDITATION? It is never too young to start! I don’t believe there is a magic age as everyone is developmentally unique. But, science does share that the first five years are crucial to a child’s health and development. I’ve been teaching toddlers for the last seven years. What I see as they get older is a deeper sense of identifying their own emotions and using movement and breathing practices when they need them. I have parents share stories all the time like, ‘My child said they were feeling scared to go to school and knew they needed to do their candle breath practice, humming (bee breath) or affirmation.’ I weave in fun games, music, repetition and stories with positive themes like compassion, gratitude, and kindness. WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO PRACTICE MINDFULNESS EXERCISES LIKE YOGA AND MEDITATION? By nurturing the seeds of consciousness in young minds, we support the growth of a more peaceful world. In a world where these young individuals will shape our collective future, cultivating a sense of presence is important for navigating the world they live in. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness support them through all their emotions and daily trials. The world they are growing up in is so busy with screens everywhere, plus sitting for hours at a time, they are very disconnected at times. These practices give them an opportunity to listen inwards, feel grounded even when things become turbulent (tree pose or mountain pose is great) and most of all have choices on how to pause/respond vs react. Every class I teach incorporates a gratitude practice which can shift the mindset so quickly when they are feeling stuck in their pain, tough day, or emotions. Scientists are finding that a practice of gratitude (mindfulness) can help support long-term mental health. Yoga and mindfulness have been shown to improve both physical and mental health in children. A quick movement break can help their brain focus again. Yoga improves balance, strength, endurance, improve focus, self-esteem, and can even help reduce stress in children. By weaving in social and emotional practices, kids are more inclined to be kind to themselves and others plus grow up more empathetic.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2024? Launching my Kid’s Yoga Mentorship + membership program which will bring more yoga classes to the Greater Austin area and beyond, sharing a Sound Bath at the Siete Wellness Summit, providing FREE and accessible kid’s yoga classes and extending my Yoga and Sound Meditation offerings to larger corporate clients for wellness experiences.

Brian Johnson on Achieving Arete AND HOW HIS BOOK AND ANTI-FRAGILE CONFIDENCE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Best-selling author Brian Johnson describes himself as 50 percent philosopher, 50 percent CEO and 101 percent committed to helping create a world in which 51 percent of humanity is flourishing by the year 2051. He even has a tattoo of the goal, as well as a tattoo of the word Arete. He says, “Arete is the one-word answer the stoics would give you on how to live a good life.” It’s also the title of his book ARETE: Activate Your Heroic Potential, which became a bestseller its first week out. Brian, who lives in Texas Hill Country, is also the founder of the self-development platform Heroic, where you can find him giving daily doses of wisdom via his popular YouTube channel and the platform’s app. We caught up with him for a snapshot discussion on his book and life, but for a deeper dive, we recommend you get the book, available everywhere books are sold, and check out Heroic. www.heroic.us

Brian Johnson ON THE COVER OF THE BOOK, PHIL STUTZ SAYS ‘THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.” HOW WILL IT DO THAT? I think you achieve Arete by expressing the best version of yourself moment to moment to moment. I think this book will change your life by helping you move from theory, to practice to mastery. I’ve spent half of the last 25 years building and selling to businesses and the other half reading and writing and thinking. The book distills all the best ideas I’ve learned, integrating ancient wisdom and modern science. WHAT ARE SOME HABITS YOU DO DAILY TO BE OPTIMAL? I’m a very disciplined guy. What I’m trying to do is forge anti-fragile confidence, so I do the key behaviors that keep me plugged into energy, work and love all day every day, especially when I don’t feel like it. I know that today started last night, so my number one habit is getting a good night of sleep. I’m in bed for 8-9 hours a night almost every single night.

YOU SUMMARIZE HUNDREDS OF BOOKS IN ARETE, WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR MUST-READ BOOKS? The Tools by Phil Stutz, my beloved spiritual father and coach. Phil was featured in the Netflix documentary by Jonah Hill called “Stutz.” My second is Deep Work by my friend Cal Newport in which he helps us understand that the ability to focus your attention on what’s important now in your work is a 21st century superpower and Atomic Habits by James Clear which is arguably the best book on behavioral change ever written, helping you install and delete habits. YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT YOUR SESSIONS WITH PHIL STUTZ (OVER 400!) AND HE WROTE THE FORWARD TO ARETE, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL PEOPLE WHO ARE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT SEEKING THERAPY? Phil is a psychiatrist and a therapist but I view my relationship with him as my coach. His therapy is coaching which is the whole point of Stutz, he’s revolutionized the psychological model to make it incredibly practical. I think we need to destigmatize mental health challenges in general and realize the best among us have the most coaches and get the most support. About 80 percent of us are struggling with anxiety or depression or burnout, so you’re not alone. THIS BOOK SAYS VOLUME 1, WILL THERE BE A VOLUME 2? And a three and a four and a five if I live long enough. This one is 451 of the most potentially life-changing ideas I know to this point, but I intend to produce one every 3-5 years and five is the target. It takes 451 degrees to ignite a fire, and 2200 degrees is what takes to forge a sword. I intend to create five volumes. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? I wish I could go back to my 10-year-old self who was scared of everything, or even my 20-year-old self and I wish they could see me and feel me and get excited for the future we’re creating together. I’d tell him, ‘You got this! I’d tell him to forge anti-fragile confidence, to optimize your energy, your work and your love, make today a masterpiece, master yourself, dominate your fundamentals and know your superpower.’ Find Brian on Instagram at @heroicbrian

What’s Poppin at Poppi We spoke with co-founder and Chief Brand Office Allison Ellsworth ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN

If you haven’t tried one, you’ve certainly seen Poppi, the better-for-you soda in brightly colored cans. There are currently 11 flavors sold in over 35,000 stores nationwide! It was founded by Austin-based husbandand-wife duo Stephen, Chief Innovation Officer who runs operations, and Allison Ellsworth with the help of funding they received pitching on “Shark Tank” in April 2018! We spoke to Allison to learn more about this buzzy beverage.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR POPPI?

I’d been looking for something to help with my chronic health issues and stumbled upon apple cider vinegar, which has traditionally been used for centuries in medicine. I tried drinking it in shot form, but I couldn’t stomach the bitter, tough-to-swallow taste! I started mixing it with fruit juice in my kitchen and after a lot of experimentation, I realized I had created a soda that’s not only better-for-you, but extremely tasty.

HOW WAS BEING ON SHARK TANK?

Such a trip! Not only was I pregnant during the entire casting process, I was extremely close to my due date when we actually got the call that we’d be going in front of the Sharks. It was so interesting to get to peek behind the curtain of the show and meet all the amazing Sharks, and at this point, Rohan and I are close friends. I’m so grateful to the show, it really couldn’t have gone any better!

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | F OOD + BEVERAG E

WHAT’S IN POPPI BESIDES APPLE CIDER VINEGAR?

We primarily use sparkling water, fruit juices, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, organic agave inulin, cane sugar and just a dash of stevia. Nothing artificial!

HOW IS POPPI A BETTER-FOR-YOU SODA?

Not only is it created with natural, high-quality ingredients, but it’s also changing the game for soda lovers with less sugar and calories compared to traditional sodas. Plus, it has prebiotics for your gut, all while wrapped in refreshing, delicious flavor.

IS IT OKAY TO DRINK MORE THAN ONE POPPI A DAY EVEN THOUGH IT HAS PREBIOTICS?

Of course! We enjoy 3-4 a day here at Poppi HQ.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE INVESTORS OUR READERS MAY KNOW?

Poppi investors include star-studded names like Jared Leto, Olivia Munn, Russel Westbrook, Kygo and Shay Mitchell.

IS POPPI OKAY FOR KIDS TO DRINK? Sure is! My kids are obsessed.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT HAVING A BUSINESS BASED IN AUSTIN?

Austin leads culture in Texas and is such a fun, vibrant place to live and work. It has the best food, music, art, outdoor activities…the list goes on! There’s never a shortage of inspiration in Austin.

WHAT’S YOUR LONG-TERM VISION WITH POPPI? To become the #1 soda, period!

THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER This is our Oyster case, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch case, conceived by Rolex in 1926 and patented. A one-of-a-kind feature, which holds within it an intricate world of cogs and minutely crafted parts. Made of some of the most refined alloys, the Oyster case is incomparably resistant to all sorts of external aggressions. Yet no object so hermetic, so immovable, has ever opened the door to so many

possibilities. With its original patented design consisting of a bezel, a case back and a winding crown screwed down against the middle case, it profoundly changed the course of watchmaking history and set new standards of waterproofness for all wristwatches. To this day, the Oyster case continues to protect our watches and our movements within them. It stands as undeniable proof of our constant quest for reliability.
