The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book waiting to be written.

– Melody Beattie In December I reflect back on the year that was – the good and the bad, what I’m most grateful for, and what I’d like to do differently going forward.

In January, I start with lists and often vision boards, recording goals and dreams I want to work towards and manifest in the new year. For a lot of us, the foundation of our desires begins with our health, so it’s a perfect time for the Health & Wellness Issue.

Inside these pages – in addition to an amazing interview with Texas girl Miranda Lambert! – we get inspired to chase our dreams from Austin Deep founder Jessica Price – who started carving out her niche in massage in Austin in 2017. We learn that life can surprise you if you take a chance – from Cirque du Soleil performer Erin Cervantes, who didn’t start acrobatics until she was 30 and auditioned for Cirque due Soleil at 33-years-old.

We share ways to be good to yourself, from reminders to be open about your mental health from The Big Silence founder (and Tone It Up co-founder) Karena Dawn, and talk to Dr. Sheila C. Barbarino on looking and feeling your best in 2023.

Karena Dawn earned a platform and success as co-founder of Tone It Up, a ‘wellness movement’ comprised of online workouts, nutrition products, meditations and more. Although still an active fitness trainer, these days Karena, who lives in Austin with her husband and their six Pomeranians, spends most of her energy on The Big Silence, a non-profit encouraging the normalization of talking about mental health. She has a book and podcast of the same name and hosts local events and experiences, a couple of which are available to bid on through early January to benefit the #NotAloneChallenge, a challenge she’s spearheading with musician Jewel and others to raise money for The Big Silence and Jewel’s Inspiring Children Foundation.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S SO IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO BREAK THEIR SILENCE AND SHARE MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES? I know from my own personal experiences when you share experiences you think you’ll be judged on or ridiculed by or you’re ashamed of, when you speak up and use your voice and you share, community comes together and you realize you’re not alone. That realization you’re not alone and that we’re all the same in certain ways is a part of healing trauma. That’s why I started The Big Silence, the silence is the things we don’t talk about, but The Big Silence is here to make some noise.

HOW HAS BEING OPEN ABOUT YOUR OWN CHALLENGES HELPED YOU? It’s been healing to the trauma of growing up with a mother with paranoid schizophrenia who suffered from depression until she passed in 2021. The Big Silence is dedicated to her. And, growing up in the 90s, no one was talking about mental health, which then in my own mind I didn’t want to speak about it because I felt shame that this was going on in my family, so sharing and having a voice and community come together is one of the big things.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU DO FOR SELF-CARE? Number one, I give myself permission for self-care, because so often we get trapped in that mentality of get up and go and work, but you’re not fulfilled until you fill your own cup. So, self-care to me and for me is I wake up, I like to make hot lemon water and honey, I like to meditate and read a few pages in a book. I like to move my body. I’m a fitness trainer and founder of Tone It Up, but at the same time, I sometimes struggle with motivation. But, if I can just get myself to walk into the gym and sit there and commit to just doing it for 10 minutes and then get a full workout in, I feel so much better. Other than that, if it’s a special day I love to infrared sauna, red light therapy and I love a good cold plunge.

Bonding over their love of the city, the outdoors and exercise, they took their friendship professional when they noticed the affect ageing was having on their lives.

EXPLAIN HOW AS YOU ENTERED INTO YOUR MID-30S, YOU NOTICED REGARDLESS OF HEALTHY EATING HABITS AND AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE, IT WAS CHALLENGING TO MAINTAIN YOUR PHYSIQUE? SEAN: I found that the right balance between work, friends, diet, exercise and sleep was almost impossible to find. The biggest challenge I noticed as I started to approach 40 was the increased difficulty to maintain my physique. Workouts took longer and meals had to be leaner.

ARTIE: I’ve experienced what many have - sports injuries that have kept me from exercising for periods of time. I think a lot of people are in the same boat for similar reasons… and I’m glad there are solutions to be proactive about your body...

WHICH YOU FOUND, AFTER EMBARKING ON SOME SERIOUS RESEARCH - THEN DECIDING TO OPEN FIGURA HERE IN AUSTIN. SEAN: Our research led us to exploring several body contouring devices and it really came down to the reputation of the machine. Several of these non-invasive machines over-promised and under-delivered. CoolSculpting was our first purchase because it was the clear winner of all machines on the market for fat reduction. It wasn’t long until we realized Emsculpt was a perfect complement to CoolSculpting. After removing areas of fat, we can then start improving the muscles and overall strength.

ARTIE: As a physician I had to look closely at safety. These particular procedures had sufficient numbers of treatments and reliable reporting methods to make an accurate assessment that they are safe and effective.

WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE EXPECT COMING TO FIGURA? SEAN: The first thing we express to clients is a clear expectation of the results. These are amazing technologies but not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle, or an excuse to indulge in unhealthy foods just because you can now freeze it away. As for the treatments, each feels extremely different. When a CoolSculpting applicator is

applied to the skin, the client will feel their fat suctioned into the applicator and initially feel an extreme cold sensation on that area.

After about five minutes, the area will be numb and you will not feel much for the remaining duration of the treatment. Emsculpt feels like something I cannot easily describe. For 30 minutes, your muscles will be contracting every few seconds. It can be described as a pulling, tickling sensation, or an intense vibration. It is painless and the intensity can be controlled by the technician to be at a level that is comfortable for the patient.

AND THE ALL-IMPORTANT RESULTS? SEAN: They vary but on average, CoolSculpting clients see a reduction of around 20 to 25% of fat in the areas treated, and the fat cells in those areas are completely destroyed and will not return. Emsculpt results are different depending on the area treated. For those that treat their buttocks, patients will see a natural lift. For those that treat their abdomen, they will notice a flattening and improved core strength. Emsculpt results are not permanent. Just like going to the gym, your results will go away overtime if not maintained. Miranda Lambert is a force to be reckoned with.

A singer, songwriter, guitarist... and now a certified Texas legend, thanks in part to an honor she will receive next month in Austin from the Texas Cultural Trust. The Longview, TX native (and hitmaker of country classics “The House That Built Me” and “Gunpowder & Lead” tells us about her love for the Lone Star State - and her plans for the year ahead.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ONE OF THE HONOREES AT THIS YEAR’S TEXAS MEDAL OF ARTS AWARDS FROM THE TEXAS CULTURAL TRUST? MIRANDA LAMBERT: It is such a huge honor for me. I am a very proud Texan, like we all are, so this means the world to me; especially because it’s about songwriting.

WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU FEEL YOU AND OTHER TEXANS SHARE TO MAKE OUR STATE, ITS CULTURE, ITS ARTS, UNIQUE AND WONDERFUL? ML: Texas is so vast, and every part of the state brings something different to the table. I also think there is such an amazing music scene, which makes it so much more welcoming for new singer/songwriters.

WHAT TEXAN MUSICIAN WOULD YOU LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH AND WHY? ML: I actually do collaborate with a quite a few artists. Recently with Jon Randall and Jack Ingram, we made a record around the fire out in Marfa, Texas called “The Marfa Tapes” and it is one of my favorite projects I have ever done.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN ABOUT TEXAS AND HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL? ML: I love so many, so that is a hard one. Off the top of my head, I would pick “If It Wasn’t for Texas” by the King, George Strait. I also love “Girls From Texas,” written by Jon Randall and Shane McAnally. Pat Green and Lyle Lovett did a great version.

WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT TEXAS WHEN YOU ARE AWAY? ML: Everything! The music and the Tex-Mex mostly.

THIS IS OUR NEW YEAR ISSUE. TELL US, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2023?

ML: I have been doing a residency in Las Vegas called Velvet Rodeo. I’ve had a lot of fun putting that show together, so I’m excited to get back out there for the third run in March/April of this year.

HOW DO YOU KEEP MENTALLY STRONG AND PHYSICALLY WELL WHILE YOU ARE RECORDING, ON TOUR, TRAVELING? ML: I exercise and try to rest as much as possible during the down time. I used to not balance my life very well, but I think I have finally learned about self-care and how to do it a little better than in my 20s.

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL OPTIMISTIC FOR THE FUTURE? ML: Being happy and at peace with myself has made everything seem a little brighter. I love spending time with my husband and we make a lot of plans together for travel and adventure.

WHAT PLACES ARE YOUR MUST-VISITS WHENEVER YOU’RE IN AUSTIN? ML: Maudie’s! I love that place. I also love walking up and down SOCO and shopping and bar hopping. We also like to go to Lady Bird Lake and just wander around.

MY CHEER-UP, BELT-OUT SONG IS YOUR DUET WITH KEITH URBAN, WE WERE YOUNG. WHAT SONG DO YOU CRANK UP AND SING IN THE SHOWER OR IN KARAOKE TO LIFT YOUR MOOD AND LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD? ML: Well thank you! I am a ‘90s country girl for sure, but I also love the “Hold My Beer” albums from Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers. They always put me in a Texas state of mind.

THE NIGHT YOU WILL BE HONORED AS ONE OF THE TEXAS ICONS OF THE YEAR WILL BE A GREAT CELEBRATION. HOW WILL YOU PREP FOR SUCH A BIG NIGHT OUT, ON THE INSIDE AND OUT? ML: I am so excited to come home and celebrate with my fellow creative Texans. I’m sure it will be a night to remember so I just wanna soak it all in.

The Texas Medal of Arts Awards strives to honor both distinguished Texas artists and persons or organizations that have encouraged the advancement of the arts in Texas, whether through personal achievement or unfailing support. Nominees must have been born in the State of Texas or completed a major portion of their work in Texas to be considered. Here are three other honorees being celebrated at this year’s event: Brothers-in-law Juan Miró, from Barcelona, and Miguel Rivera, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, moved to Austin in 2000 and co-founded Miró Rivera Architects. The prestigious design firm has won over 100 design awards, including the Architectural Digest AD100 and Arch Daily’s list of the World’s Best Architects: “As architects, it is humbling to be awarded this medal together with the other arts because we believe that architecture can indeed be a wonderful artistic expression. We made Texas our home twenty-five years ago and we are grateful for the support of all the people that have made our work possible. Receiving the Texas Medal of the Arts is a great honor that motivates us to keep having a positive impact through architecture.”

Deborah Roberts is a mixed media artist whose work challenges the notion of ideal beauty. Her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles, California; Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas, among several other institutions.: “I was really moved to hear that I would be a recipient of the Texas Medal of Arts award. As a native Texan I’m extremely proud.”

Lela Rose is a fashion designer who continues to redefine and refine modern feminine grace with eponymous collections that span a woman’s complete wardrobe—from accessible everyday separates to the perfect wedding gown: “Growing up in Texas, I have always had an abiding love for the state. I’ve always been deeply proud of my roots here and so much about Texas—from our gorgeous landscapes to our signature hospitality, the rich marriages of our culture and Texans’ singular signature styles— has been a major influence in my life and my design sensibility.

This is an unbelievable honor that I’m proud to share with so many amazing fellow Texans.”

The Cirque du Soleil is Coming to Town Corteo brings a mix of music, comedy and stunning acrobatics from aerialists like Erin Cervantes

Beautiful music, belly laugh comedy and mesmerizing acrobatics are just a part of the magic of Cirque du Soleil. In advance of the show ‘Corteo’ coming to The Moody Center early February, Austin Lifestyle caught up with Erin Cervantes, an aerialist who literally gets to swing from chandeliers every night, to learn more about the show and her inspiring journey to becoming part of it.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN CIRQUE DU SOLEIL? Since the relaunch of ‘Corteo’ when it moved from the Big Top to the arena format in 2017.

WHAT ACTS ARE YOU IN? The chandelier is my main act, I also do the roue cyr, a giant metal wheel that spins on the ground and we make move with our bodies.

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU STARTED DOING THIS? I was actually 30 when I went to the circus school for the first time, just for fun, as a different kind of workout. When I went, I hadn’t had much interest in being a dancer, but I realized I had a talent for it. I really didn’t mind how difficult and painful it was because I loved it and found this passion for this new thing that I knew nothing about.

I was very grateful to find a good coach who owned the school.

She performed with Cirque du Soleil many years before and found a handful of us that she thought had potential and pushed us really hard. I started making up acts and doing little showcases at the school for friends and family. Then one day I thought, why don’t I send my stuff to Cirque du Soleil and see what they say.

JESSICA PRICE GETS DEEP The Texas entrepreneur has mastered making people feel better

AustinDEEP founder Jessica Price is a body work innovator with two massage studios (and growing!) and a school teaching the trade. Throughout her career her mission has been to teach, improve, and deliver the ultimate deep tissue massage.

Jessica worked with Senator Kelly Hancock to draft a bill that allowed half of a massage student’s required training hours to be completed online, making training more affordable and accessible.

With the new law in effect, Jessica launched The DEEPACADEMY School of Massage in August 2022.

We caught up with Jessica to learn more.

Possibly Perfection A MICHELIN-STAR CHEF AND PRO-SKATEBOARDER COLLABORATE TO MAKE THE BEST BACKYARD DAD BURGER New dad Phillip Frankland Lee, chef and partner at Pasta Bar and Sushi by Scratch Restaurants, and Neen Williams, a fellow new dad and professional skateboarder, have been working together for more than two years. The project – creating the perfect backyard dad burger. Now they serve that burger, the NADC Burger, exclusively at Idle Hands on Rainey Street – where you walk through the bar to get to the window to order the single burger they serve, and optional fries.

Chef Phillip and Neen told Austin Lifestyle that the burger went through several incarnations before arriving where it is today – where each bite is a delight. The Not a Damn Chance Burger (NADC), meaning there’s not a chance you can make a substitution, is 1/3 pound of premium Texas Wagyu Beef- seasoned with NADC seasoning, American cheese, secret sauce, onions and pickles. It’s made with Iron Table Wagyu, the only 100 percent fullblooded Wagyu available commercially in Texas.

INTENTIONS ARE THE NEW RESOLUTIONS How many of us fall into a frenzy of change every January, only to realize a few weeks later our resolutions have all but dissolved? There’s a reason for that. Intentions not Resolutions create and support long term shifts, explains the Founder/ Director of All Things Wild and Wild Heart Yoga

Resolutions have been a buzzword for as long as I can remember. We echo the usual “lose 5 pounds,” “travel more,” or “quit my job” only to feel like we somehow failed along the way. There’s a reason for that.

Resolutions are hard pass/fail goals, a leftbrain activity set for the future - a metric, like a scale, often keeping score. Goals are about doing. Intentions are about being.

Intentions are based on our values and involve our intuition and emotional bodies.

This taps us into our creative frequency.

Think of intentions as a guiding compass, a north star, that connects us to the present moment to support steps into the life we are manifesting. Because this act is about aligning ourselves, setting intentions also comes with acknowledging our resistances and where we follow into autopilot. This provides another catalyst for transformation.

The first time I walked into a yoga class, I was just there for the work out. This was the first time I was asked to set an intention, and truth be told, I internally rolled my eyes as it all felt a little too woo-woo for me... but

I gave it a go, and started peeling back the superficial layers of why I was there.

My intention was to feel good in my body. To feel free. To feel whole. To feel peace amidst the chaos. Every inhale and exhale, I repeated this mantra. I thought this intention would dissipate after class.

Little did I know, I was creating new neural pathways, laying the blueprint for a new way of thinking. It didn’t take long for me to see my intention have a ripple effect off of mat and into my everyday life.

This intention became my compass when making decisions. “Does this decision make me feel good in my body? Does it make me feel free and whole? Is this adding to our taking away my peace?” My intention gave me an anchor into the present moment, guiding my decisions to live a life that felt good in my body and soul. If I made a decision that wasn’t aligned with my intention, there was a lesson and an opportunity to shift courses.

My intentions led me away from toxic relationships, and jobs that no longer

felt rewarding. Intention gave me insight, courage, trust, and guided me back on a path of feeling inspired and excited.

Experiencing the power of yoga, the ancient and wise teachings of being present, and all of the ways they supported my journey through joy, grief, darkness, and light, my heart led me here. To open a space like Wild Heart Yoga, where others could come, just as they were, to get curious about the infinite possibilities within.

Intention setting is something we can do each day to actively manifest our dreams into reality. The New Year provides an opportunity to have a conversation with ourselves on how we want to show up in the world. “How do I feel?

What do I need? What inspires me?”

This is the space from which intentions are born. And remember, just like you, your intentions can evolve and change throughout the year.

It’s actually very empowering to say I’m going to give everyone else 99% of me, but I’m saving that 1% to make myself feel good and look good.

Fundamentally, my biggest tip is to start taking care of yourself. Have a great resurfacing laser to get rid of the years of bad skincare and sun exposure and start the year with a refreshed canvas. Come in to have some neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or Daxxify) to get rid of your forehead lines and your dreaded “eleven.” These lines make you look more tired and angry than you are… and there was a
