Welcome to May’s annual issue celebrating some of the amazing women who call Austin home. This issue is challenging because Austin is full of phenomenal women and the space limitations of a print magazine allow us to highlight only a few. But, I’m thrilled to have pages packed with inspirational women, some of who you probably know, and others you may be meeting for the first time. Our cover star Jamie Lynn Sigler, who many know from “The Sopranos,” radiates grace, strength and kindness. She decided to move to Austin just over a year ago, following a feeling, friends, and the knowledge that Austin is a great place to raise a family. In our interview we talk about putting down roots in Austin, podcasting, her positive perspective on living with MS, which has been part of her life for the last 20 years, and more. Elsewhere we have quick chats with Amber Allen, a passionate and brilliant founder who’s creating Metaverses with practical applications to help foster human connection, Rose Smith, the founder of Black Women in Business, who’s like a vessel of wisdom which she’s more than happy to share and Dr. Shirat Ling, a woman who lives to make women feel and be,‘naturally’ pretty. We also talk to five female dentists of Enamel Dentistry, a trio of doulas and the pair who started ATX’s TV Festival, which takes place next month. I hope you enjoy reading through this issue and if you have suggestions for women we should feature (or men!), please email me. We’ll be featuring inspirational women on our Instagram throughout the month. Happy May and see you back here in June – for the Men’s Issue! Cheers,

ATX TV Fest’s Caitlin & Emily Caitlin & Emily
Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson started the ATX TV Festival June 2012! On the heels of their 11th year, Austin Lifestyle caught up with the duo to get the scoop on their decade plus partnership and what we can expect from the fest this year. ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN

O UR TOWN | ARTS + CU LTURE
How did you meet? Caitlin: We met as assistants on the Fox Lot in Los Angeles in 2005! Emily was an assistant in Feature Film Finance...."I joke that Emily approved my petty cash receipts...which she still does!" Emily: My boss told me I should take all the assistants I worked with out to lunch because those are the people I’d be rising through the ranks with. How did you decide to work together? Caitlin: We used to daydream about starting a company that allowed us to work independently where we wouldn't work on Mondays and our dogs could come to the office... The joke is that when you start a company you work every day, all the time. The festival came about because I was trying to figure out my next move...and when I wasn't hired at Austin Film Festival, I thought ‘Where is the TV Festival? I'll go work for it.’ And I didn't find one... Emily was also looking for her next adventure, so she hopped onboard within a week. Emily: I always knew I wanted to move back to Texas, so when Cait first told me this idea, it seemed like the perfect time. Is there a secret sauce to an enduring partnership? Caitlin: Communication is key. Emily: It’s like any relationship. You have to let each other grow and evolve, you have to be allowed to change your mind and direction, and you have to believe the other person always has the best interest of the company at heart…We also worry about separate things, and we panic at opposite times. It definitely helps that one of us always remains grounded while the other one is panicking. What’s a key lesson you’ve learned from your first festival until now? Emily: That you can plan and organize and schedule all the details down to the second, but the true magic comes when the people arrive, and with them comes unpredictability. Something is always going to go wrong, but very few things
(COVID aside) are going to take down the festival. The unexpected is what’s exciting and that’s what makes live events so special. You have a festival coming up June 2, what’s something people can look forward to this year? Caitlin: Being back in person! Truly, we’ve had fun learning and being virtual, but we miss people. The happenstance of running into someone in a bar, in line, and finding an unexpected conversation. … Also Parenthood and Scrubs reunions! You call the festival a TV Camp for Grown Ups… Caitlin: We are a community of TV Industry and TV super fans that come together to celebrate all things television…while eating and drinking a lot of really great things. Emily: We watch, talk, and celebrate TV together. There’s panels and screenings full of your favorite TV series past, present, and future. But the “camp” part is really about being together and creating friendships. Whether it’s trivia or TV-themed karaoke or happy hours focused on your new (or old) favorite show, it’s about making your new best friend because you both love the same show. What keeps you motivated to keep doing what you do? Emily: It’s about the people. It’s the fact that we care so much about the ATX TV community and we want to give them the best experience possible. We also deeply believe in the power of story and that TV is a powerful medium that can bring people together. Final thoughts? Emily: ATX TV is a place of discovery. Whether it’s something new about an old show, or finding your new favorite series, actor, or even platform. The possibilities are endless of what you can find. If you’ve never heard of ATX TV, go to our website and scroll through our panels from the past. I guarantee you’ll find a show or person you like, and hopefully it’ll give you a sense of who we are and what “TV Camp for Grown Ups” is all about. Website atxfestival.com/

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR WORK? I love building tools that empower creators to create! By making Double A super simple and easy to access, it bridges the gap across generations and demographics for all people to find ways to connect, have a voice and share their vision. Building the product that helps bridge the understanding of the metaverse is my passion. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I believe innovators will change the world. I’m motivated by being a part of this change and providing a platform that helps millions of people connect with each other and get closer to their personal purpose. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR SELF-CARE? I grew up a gamer girl so play has always been a big part of who I am. As I got older, I integrated more adrenaline-focused, adventurous play into the mix which has become my favorite part of my self-care strategy. A FAVORITE THING ABOUT AUSTIN? Cool Austinites always lead to more cool Austinites. I meet interesting people and they end up connecting me to additional people from all walks of life with no agenda. And, of course the El Arroyo sign - a great representation of the heart of the voice of Austin. FAVORITE BOOK? The God Equation - Michio Kaku

Dr. Shirat Ling Physician Artist and owner of Innate Beauty
Dr. Ling not only brilliantly performs aesthetic procedures from Botox to fillers and more, but is a national instructor who trains physicians to perform medical aesthetic procedures. Here’s more about Dr. Ling…
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR WORK? I create art with people’s faces :) I love helping my patients optimize their appearance with natural-appearing enhancements. I am grateful that my patients trust me to sculpt them and bring them joy when they look in the mirror. I originally chose family medicine as my specialty, as I enjoyed solving mysteries...their health still comes up in our conversation, as I create art with their faces. It’s relationship-building...not just poking.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Connecting with patients, improving their lives, even in some seemingly small way. Unfortunately, our society still has double standards for women, and there is a lot of pressure to look or be a certain way. It’s a balance of bridging self-acceptance with self-improvement. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR SELF-CARE? I love recharging with my life partner, deep tissue massages, regular exercise, cooking, and a good nap.
A FAVORITE THING ABOUT AUSTIN? The eclectic mix of chill places to hang out and get a coffee and taco, outdoor spaces for activities and exercise, and overall welcoming attitude. There are still little pockets of weird. FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO YOU TRY TO LIVE BY? “The Golden Rule” ASK YOU HAVE FOR READERS: Please do your research and trust your face and body health to a trained professional with the eye of an artist, and the knowledge of a physician. Don’t go cheap on your face. Find Dr. Ling at innatebeauty.com

CEO & Founder of Black Women in Business
WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT BRINGS YOU JOY? Nothing brings me more joy than spending time with my family. My husband, Charles, and I have six amazing children and nine beautiful grandchildren. Anytime we are together it's a good time!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO FOR WORK? As a Business and Success Coach, I love having the opportunity to help others win! I get fired up watching an entrepreneur go from the "birthing stage" of their business to actually making a profit from their products and services.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I am motivated by my ancestors and all the inspiring people who have come before me, the ones I have been blessed to journey with and the potential of the generation that will take the baton. It is the random acts of kindness, the large sacrifices, the knowledge, experiences and wisdom shared between all of us.
A FAVORITE THING ABOUT AUSTIN? The resilience of the people.
FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO? Life's most persistent and urgent question is, "What are you doing for others?" -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Catching Up With
Jamie Lynn Sigler She followed her instincts, and now calls Austin home.

Jamie Lynn in Alice + Olivia's rainbow skirt from Estilo Boutique
Since she was seven, Jamie Lynn Sigler has been an actress, but she doesn’t have an ounce of entitlement. She starred on iconic series “The Sopranos” while still a teenager, and did more than a season on “Entourage,” but she doesn’t travel with an entourage of her own. Rather, she’s super down to earth, a woman you kind of just want to be your best friend. Close friends are a large part of what brought Jamie Lynn, her husband Cutter Dyksta and their two sons to Austin. That, their newly renovated home, the Southern hospitality and good life it can provide for their kids are what’s made them happy to put down roots here. Just after traveling back from New Mexico, where she’s commuting to film “Big Sky” on ABC, we did a photo shoot with Jamie Lynn at The Sienna the Thompson Hotel, luxury apartments that, like the hotel, opened earlier this year. The modern location is flavored with several local touches – from the Texas wallpaper that features a drawing of Matthew McConaughey to longhorns on the bar and sweeping views of the city throughout. Before going to pick up her kids from school, we chatted with Jamie Lynn about Austin, acting, podcasting, gaining strength from MS and more. What was the impetus behind moving to Austin? I think like many, in 2020, after months at home with time to really re-evaluate our lives, and my husband’s company going remote, we felt like it was an opportunity for us to see what a life outside of Los Angeles would be. It was a moment of, “What are we waiting for? Let’s go for it!” Did you consider other cities? Honestly, no, which is crazy, because neither of us really knew Austin well at all. A lot of our close friends had been talking about it, but it was almost a feeling we just followed. The day we moved we boarded the airplane and my husband and I just looked at each other and were like, “What did we just do?” How long did it take you to find your house? We did the hours-long Zillow search, like everyone else, but ultimately our realtor (Alexandria Murphy, who I knew from my NYC days), found us our home. It was off market, and so special and was the first house we saw. I actually saw it on facetime before we flew down and my hands were shaking as we did the call. I knew it was meant to be our home.

them become who they want to be. My husband and I try very hard not to put any of our own things on them.
You started acting when you were 7-yearsold and started a ten-year run on “The Sopranos” at 16. What’s something you liked and something you didn’t like about being a child actress? I didn’t have a typical “child actress” experience. I was in public school on Long Island, even while I shot “Sopranos.” None of my friends from school were in the business and even once I moved to the city and was well into the Sopranos run, I had very few actor friends, if any.
What’s something you’ve learned from your kids lately? Beau has a “serious girlfriend” and Jack loves to sing!
Do you think either of your kids would potentially want to pursue a career in acting? Baseball? Who knows! My oldest son, Beau, for sure has a knack for the dramatics and loooooves movies, but he’s also a really gifted athlete and Texas sure has incredible sports programs! My favorite thing about parenting is watching
Tell me about the Pajama Pants podcast you do with Kassem G and your “Sopranos” co-star Robert Iller… I record Pajama Pants once a week. either from home or from Albuquerque where I work on the show “Big Sky.” It’s a fun hour of my life with two of my best friends where we talk about everything and nothing. We get silly and deep and it’s the best. Do you have any dream guests? Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Oprah. What do you enjoy about doing a podcast? It’s an intimate conversation that people get to listen in on. I’m a student
of life and I love learning about people and why they are the way they are, and I always forget we are recording. Fans of pajama pants, when they come up to me and tell me how they love it, it means so much to me. They really get me. How often do you have to commute to New Mexico for “Big Sky”? At least once a week. sometimes twice. The mom guilt is real, and the flight is so short, so if I have a day off I’m running back home. Favorite thing about being on “Big Sky? My character is so unpredictable. Is it true you never watched “The Sopranos” until the pandemic? True! Have you finished it? Thoughts? I haven’t finished yet, but I get it. I get why people care about it so much. I had let enough time pass so that I could enjoy it as an audience member as much as possible.

I read several years ago you were writing a script you wanted to produce. Did you ever finish that? It’s kind of done, but I don’t want to be in it anymore. I enjoy creating and watching what someone could do with it. Stay tuned! Austin is getting a pretty big Hollywood presence, from people to productions. Have you found it’s becoming (or will become) easier to work here – whether it’s auditioning for roles filming in Texas or creating content with people here? I don’t know about that per se, though I would love a job in Austin! What I will say, is in this business I always had to be ready to pick up and move around, and now that auditions are self-tape for the most part, and my acting classes are online, I might as well live in a place that is good for my whole family. Is writing, producing and/or directing something you’d like to do? Not at the moment. while my kids are this little. but in the future, yes!! You’ve been living with MS for a long time, but have only spoke about it intermittently. What’s a lesson you’ve learned from it that you think has made you stronger? Everything about MS has made me stronger, which is weird to say about a disease that has rendered me disabled in some ways. I just see things from a different perspective and I appreciate the smaller things. We all deal with things in life and I don’t think I deserve extra credit for pursuing the life I want. We all have challenges, but MS allows me to look at how to overcome and accept myself and that makes me feel strong and proud. What’s a misconception about MS or something you wished people understood about it? I find people with MS, like myself, struggle with asking for help. It can be “invisible” in many ways, which can make you internalize your pain and then make

Stephanie founded Estilo in late 2004 after winding down her child and family therapy practice. What she loves about working in fashion? As a therapist, I focused my efforts on helping people work through challenging situations and find their strength and voice. I was drawn towards clothing at a young age and I realized that I could combine my love of people and clothing into a business. Every day at Estilo, we help people to feel confident in their style and have an enjoyable, authentic experience through a store and staff that is warm and inviting. When not working: As the owner of a business that’s open 7 days a week and online as well, sometimes it feels like you’re never really not working. But because I truly love what I do, it doesn’t feel like work. It’s a weird addiction. When I do shut it down, I’m a sucker for a beautiful sunset. I love to sit on the patio and watch the setting sun bring a tranquil close to the day, most likely with a glass of wine in hand.

Lauren’s been doing makeup professionally for 20 years, has a celebrity client roster that runs deep and makes quick Instagram makeup tutorials you’ll appreciate if not try to emulate.
Melanie went to Cosmetology school 10 years ago, at the age of 31, after having been a teacher, banker, and then stay at home mom. She now owns three Deep Roots locations.
What she loves about make up: I love that makeup transforms, altering your image so you can change not only the way you look but then how you feel and how people perceive you. You can be edgy, glamorous, ethereal, masculine, feminine. All of it.
When she knew hair was her calling: The minute I entered cosmetology school. I spent years in school and doing other jobs but the minute I tried hair it went from feeling like a job to feeling like something I was excited and grateful to wake up and do every day and I knew then I was in the right place.
When she knew she wanted to be a makeup artist : I always played with makeup as a young girl, but it wasn’t until my sister told me that she thought it was my path did I even think it was a possibility. Sometimes all someone needs to know us that you believe in them. A favorite thing to do when not working: I love getting outdoors, taking my kids for walks and connecting with nature.
Best part of her job: The People are the best part of my job! All the relationships I form and the perspective I get after getting to talk and meet so many different people. I go on 4-7 lunch dates a day I say. Creating is a close second. Having a vision and using my hands to make it come to fruition. When not working: I’m a mom and I love traveling with my kids and just being with them. I also have a couple of side hustles I spend a lot of time on that involves real estate and design.

Dr. Jennifer Chau DDS Partner at Parmer Park What do you love about your job? Being able to change people's perception of coming to the dentist and the fear that is associated with it. Our office is geared towards promoting patient comfort and being able to see patients leave with a smile on their face is so rewarding. Favorite quote or motto? “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. - MLK Dr. Jade Wylie DDS Partner at Lantana What do you love about your job? Watching my team grow and accomplish their goals is amazing, and I learn so much from them as well…Also seeing progress in patients who have had trouble keeping up with their oral health in the past. There is no better feeling than helping a patient and seeing them realize their health has improved! What do you do for self-care? I feel my best when eating healthy food, so I enjoy spending time cooking and trying out new recipes. Also, dentistry can be a physically demanding profession, so strength training and massage therapy have become important parts of my self-care routine. Favorite quote or motto? “Live life as though it’s the second time around but you got it wrong the first time.” Victor Frankl Dr. Kairavi Patel, DMD, MS Associate at The Grove What do you love about what your job? Working in dentistry gives you the opportunity to change people’s lives whilst also having the
ability to immediately take someone out of pain. There’s something beautiful about saying, ‘Don’t worry. When you leave today, you will no longer be in pain.’ With cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics, you can provide someone the smile they were born to have. It’s amazing how just having confidence in your smile can change a person’s life. Patients often begin to take better care of themselves after a smile makeover. It’s a gift to witness others become the best versions of themselves with your help. Favorite quote or motto? “You will face many defeats in life, but never let yourself be defeated.” - Maya Angelou
Dr. Bethany Petersen DDS, Associate at Lantana A favorite thing about Austin? Austin has incredible energy, and it is forever evolving. This city is a magnet for amazing innovators, and I love being part of this mix. Favorite quote or motto? "Nothing is worth more than laughter. It is strength to laugh and to abandon oneself, to be light." - Frida Kahlo Dr. Deana Smalls DDS Associate at Saltillo What do you love about your job? Most people “hate” the dentist because of some past experience, so to change that perspective is a good feeling. Favorite quote or motto? Currently, “Stay hydrated and mind your business.”

Hello World! TWO OF AUSTIN’S MOST BELOVED DOULAS, DOMINQUE A. WYSE AND ALLISON CLINE, SHARE THEIR LOVE STORIES ABOUT BIRTHING
32
FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOULA? Dominque: I may not have always known it but in hindsight I’ve always taken on that role with my family and friends. After first learning about what it means to be a postpartum doula, I knew it was a role that would suit me. After getting my feet wet in the birth work world, I soon learned about the health disparities that BIPOC communities are facing, specifically with birth. Being able to support my community in this role has truly been my driving force. Allison: After having my first daughter Addy in 2011, I was enamored with the midwifery model of care. I’ve been saying ever since that I will be a midwife in my next lifetime. All three of my daughters were born in different places while supporting my husband
Dominique offering support
on his active-duty military career. I saw firsthand the lack of continuity of care in main-stream and military treatment facilities. And how location and insurance make it difficult for a birth center or homebirth. It was out of these collective experiences my career as a doula was born.
DESCRIBE SOME OF YOUR MOST WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES AS A DOULA.
DOMINQUE A . W YSE AND ALLISON CLINE
A massage before the baby's arrival
D: Birth is magical! Every single time I’m leaving a birth I have a huge oxytocin boost - what we doulas refer to as a birth high. Some notable experiences have been when my clients are doubting themselves and their bodies - then, because of their support team they discover they actually have more strength than they knew was possible. That’s where the magic is. The conjuring up of strength from a space that seemingly did not exist prior to labor. What’s even more magical is when I get the opportunity to support a close friend. There’s a level of emotional intimacy there that makes the birthing space really special for me and for my client. Seeing someone you know deeply transition from pregnancy to parenthood is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. A: The moment a baby is laid on their parent’s chest for the first time, the look in the non-birthing partner’s eyes when they see their baby powerfully brought into this world by their partner. The births where unmedicated mother’s breath their baby’s right out into their arms. A gentle cesarean where the parents sang Bob Marley’s “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”.
WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR JOB? D: That’s simple - my clients are the best! Doula work is very much community centered. Being an active member of my community in this way has been so fulfilling. Having the knowledge and skills to better birthing people’s experiences is so rewarding. The growth I get to witness is my favorite part of all. A: There is nothing like watching a family meet their baby for the first time. Or the great big “I couldn’t have done it without you” hug that I receive after supporting a birth. But what it’s really about, is watching the birthing person come into their own strength and power that they didn’t even know was within them to bring their baby earthside. I love human connection in its most raw form. Doesn’t get much more so than attending a birth.

FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
D: Austin has a large and ever-growing birth community of people from all different backgrounds. In many ways we are able to offer community members a wide array of support options. Everything from body work to spiritual and energy support. However, we lack diversity in many aspects of the community here. A: There are birthing places that are more forward thinking than others regarding patient care and welcoming doulas into their space, so I always tell clients to interview their doctors or midwives just like they do their doulas or other care providers. You don’t ever get a do over for your birth experiences. Your providers are being paid very well for a service, and you should be very happy with the quality of care you’re receiving.
DOMINQUE A . W YSE AND ALLISON CLINE
D: My role as a doula is to open up my “tool box” of resources, evidence-based information, and knowledge around the transition from pregnancy to postpartum. I hold space for the big feelings that come up during this time and normalize the identity shift that comes along with parenting. Practical support is a huge piece as well. I find that when birthing people feel supported and are aware of their options, they feel safe and when they feel safe, they are able to do the hard work of birthing and sustaining another human life. I don’t give people their power, I help them uncover it. A: I empower women with my own birth stories and of those who have birthed before them, alongside them and help them realize they will be part of the stories for those that birth after them. Teaching that birth is a normal, natural process. Listening to and trusting your own body can be so empowering, but also scary. I think it’s important to simply affirm whatever their truth is in their mind and body for their own unique pregnancy and birth. And above all else, how important it is to ask for help.

She said. “For all of us to be able to rise we need each other. We need women supporting women. Studies show that women set more ambitious life goals in the presence of other women they admire. FYLI is a community that catalyzes these relationships with mentorship, education, and access to capital. The International Women’s Day celebration hosted by FYLI gave me hope and inspiration that together we can all work to realize our dreams for a better world. “ You can learn more at: fylitribe.com/
