Happy Father's Day!

Have you ever wondered, “What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!

A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.

Here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their home:

• A father’s strength can be powerful

• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational

• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting

• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence

• Time with a dad can be fun and productive

• A dad’s physicality can be challenging

• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational

• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving

• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable

Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.

Happy Father’s Day!

Kari Viola-Brooke,

Executive Director

Child Enrichment

“Since 1978, our mission has been to provide a voice and a path forward for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. We do this through two programs,” explains Kari. “Our CASA program, Court Appointed Special Advocates, where we recruit and train community volunteers to advocate for children in foster care. Children paired with a CASA volunteer, who is a dedicated advocate, will spend half as long as they normally would in foster care and reach permanency quicker. We also have our Child Advocacy Center where we do forensic interviews. When there is an allegation of abuse, whether that's sexual abuse, physical abuse, witness to violent crime, or child sex trafficking, we are the ones who interview the children.”

As a nonprofit organization, Child Enrichment relies on community support and offers several different ways for community involvement. These options include becoming a CASA volunteer, seeking education by completing one of the center’s free trainings on how to recognize signs of abuse and how to understand how adverse childhood experiences impact kids and adults, and donating money or supplies.

Patrick Feistel, Executive Director

Garden City Rescue Mission & Life Development Center

“Every person is a precious soul that God created. Everyone on our streets is someone's son, daughter, grandson, and so forth,” shares Patrick. “These are people who at one time were children with big dreams and hopes. Some have been the victims of horrible abuse; some have made horrible mistakes; many are tangled in a web of problems they can't navigate through themselves.” Through the support of individual, church, and community partnerships, Garden City Rescue Mission has, over the last 22 years, provided a safe place for over 7,000 people who are homeless and in dire need to take a shower, have a warm meal, and find much needed clothing, support, and resources.

Currently, Garden City Rescue Mission, which is located at 828 Fenwick Street, is in the middle of the “Rescue the Rescue Mission” fundraising campaign, a 90-day effort to raise money needed to purchase the property where the shelter currently operates. Rebecca Van Loenen

Augusta Locally Grown

Thirteen years ago, Augusta Locally Grown started as an online farmers market with two women owned farms. Now, they have over sixty predominantly women owned farms, the online farmers market, three in-person farmers markets, and multiple wellness programs. “We accept EBT dollars to make it affordable for everyone and we also have a lot of educational programs that go on to connect the community to local agriculture,” says Rebecca Van Loenen, Executive Director of Augusta Locally Grown.

“Every year, we take a group of participants who have diet related diseases. It’s a six month program with monthly clinic visits where your biometrics are taken and you have a one-on-one consultation with a dietitian,” says Rebecca. Participants are given a personalized meal plan and leave the appointment with a dollar amount to purchase healthy foods for them and their family.

Dr. Scott Pethke

Augusta Lung Associates

Dr. Scott Pethke moved to Evans in 2011 in response to lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina on local businesses and he specializes in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Augusta Lung Associates, which Scott joined as a practicing partner in 2012, is an independent medical group with four physicians who provide care for patients with lung related diseases and ailments such as asthma, COPD (emphysema), acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer, and tobacco use disorder. They also evaluate patients for, and manage patients with, sleep apnea. One aspect of his practice that Scott enjoys the most is the relationships he develops with patients. “When you meet people who have chronic diseases and you manage those diseases over time, whether it’s a few months, a couple years, or a decade or more, you develop a relationship with that person and that's definitely fulfilling,” says Scott.

Producing WINNING Results

A machinist by trade with an enduring interest in racing, motorsports, and things that go fast, Jimmy Rivers turned what could have been a discouraging time in life into what would become an internationally known and respected business. “I was a machine superintendent at a company and had been exposed to racing. I’d started tinkering and building a few engines that my brother and I began to race with,” shares Jimmy. “Then, the company basically relocated to another state and relocation was not something I was interested in, so I had an opportunity through the severance package to begin a business.”

Since taking that leap in 1994, his business and reputation have grown and now Jimmy Rivers Performance Works (JRPW) operates as a full-service shop, carrying everything necessary to begin and continue kart racing. “Racing karts are drastically different than normal karts,” explains Jimmy. “Racing chassis are technologically advanced, using precision, light weight components designed for speed. They also sit only about 1-1/2” off the ground, requiring a smooth, prepared surface.”

“Racers vary in age from as young as four years old to well into their sixties, having a place for almost everyone,” he adds. “Kart racing has become a springboard for many young racers to elevate to the upper echelons of motorsports.”

EXPERT HELP | LIFE + CULTURE 20

Jimmy’s investment in an extensive machine shop means he can provide kart racers with world-class racing engines and engine components while providing service to racers all over the USA and in several other countries. Additionally, JRPW provides services for the majority of other engine builders nationally. “When people get their parts from us, they perform well and work as intended,” says Jimmy. “We also have an extensive inventory for customers to come in and put their hands on parts that most companies provide only through mail order.”

JRPW also provides powder coating for metal components of racing machines and engines and for many everyday items people use. “Powder coat is an electrostatically applied coating that goes on as a powder. The part is grounded and the powder has a positive charge, which makes the powder stick,” explains Jimmy. “The part is then baked in an oven and it becomes a baked-on finish that looks like paint but is more chemical resistant and much more durable than paint. Powder coating can be used for a wide variety of items ranging from drawer knobs to large gates and railings. Other frequent items coated are engine parts, motorcycle frames, porch railings, automotive wheels, outdoor furniture, bathroom fixtures, and restoration pieces.”

For Jimmy, hearing from excited and happy customers makes the hard work worth it. “When you get those phone calls on Monday morning from somebody who just bought an engine from you, and they call you up and tell you they won their first race over the weekend with your engine – it’s great to be part of that,” shares Jimmy. “On the powder coat side of things, when you take something that someone is restoring and transform that part to make it look completely different, the reward is seeing their eyes light up when they walk in the door and see it. Honestly, any time that you’re in business and can make somebody extremely happy, that’s a winning situation.”

Stop by and visit Jimmy Rivers Performance Works at 200 Rose Street in Martinez or give the staff a call at 706-863-1206. You can also visit jrpwracing.net or JRPW Racing, Inc. on Facebook for more information on products and services.

For North Augusta native Zaccheus Miles, connecting people and showcasing their talents has always come naturally. Now, creating network connections and experiences for individuals and businesses in the global luxury industry is what he does for a career. “I started out as a fashion designer, designing bow ties in the Augusta area,” shares Zaccheus. “I also produced fashion shows to highlight other designers and local boutiques in the area to give them a platform to showcase their talents. It started with the ZM Fashion Trunk Show in 2012. Then, we produced Augusta Fashion Week where we brought in other designers from our cities across the country, like Atlanta, Miami, Jacksonville, and Nashville, to showcase their talent.”

“I’ve always felt good and felt purpose when I would help people connect to what they needed to be successful in their businesses and careers. So, I decided to go fully into the public relations world,” shares Zaccheus. “I'm a problem solver by nature. So, if I can find something that's going to help a person,

THE HISTORY OF THE ELKS LODGE

Charles Vivian was a successful entertainer in London and moved to New York City in November of 1867. Many other actors and entertainers befriended Charles and began a theatrical group under his leadership. They called themselves the Jolly Corks, named after a trick started by Charles where the uninitiated purchased a round of refreshments.

Just before Christmas in 1867, a member passed away leaving behind a wife and children. Because of that, the Jolly Corks decided that in addition to social gatherings, they wanted to help those in need. On February 16, 1868, they established the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The group held social activities and benefit performances that quickly grew popular. Members started

traveling to other cities to spread the word of the Brotherhood of the Elks and eventually, there were requests for Elks Lodges in these other cities.

Now, there are over 2,000 Elks Lodges throughout the country and the Elks Lodge serves as a place for the community to come together and gather. They give back to the community through many programs, help children grow up drug-free and healthy, and help meet the needs of our veterans.

The Elks National Drug Awareness Program (DAP) is the largest volunteer drug awareness program in the United States. Their dedicated group of volunteers teach children and parents about how dangerous drugs are and show what a drug-free life looks like. Each year the Elks Lodge also gives away millions in scholarships for students.

The Elks Lodge is also passionate about serving our veterans. Every month, the Elks Lodge serves thousands of veterans in over three hundred VA Medical Centers, State Veteran Homes, transitional centers, rehabilitation clinics, and other veterans facilities across the country. Locally, Elks Lodge members serve food at the VA Nursing Home, donate guitars to veterans taking lessons at the VA Hospital and the Elks Lodge, host a special needs dance every year, and so much more.

The Fraternal Order was founded “To promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its members; to quicken the spirit of American Patriotism and cultivate good fellowship.” The Elks Lodge #205 is located at 205 Elkdom Ct. in Augusta. The Elks Lodge hosts many social events throughout the month that are open to both guests and members. To see the calendar of events, visit their Facebook page at Augusta Elks Lodge #205. The Perfect Steak

Nothing describes summer better than a good cookout! And what is a cookout without a good, quality steak and the perfect grilling recipe?

1. Thaw and acclimate the steak. For searing to occur, the proteins in steak need to be heated to at least 310°F. Tossing cold meat onto a hot grill lowers the temperature and can prevent a crust from forming, so it’s important that any frozen steaks are thawed completely before cooking.

2. Salt your steak 30-45 minutes before grilling. This causes the salt to draw moisture from within the steak up to the surface, where it dissolves the salt and creates a brine that gets reabsorbed into the steak where it breaks down tough connective tissues.

3. Oil the grate on the grill, not the steak. Use tongs and a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil to lube your grates.

4. Manage your heat well. Remember that your grill needs to be hot for your steak to get a good sear. But if it’s hot enough to cause your oil to smoke, it’s too hot.

5. Use the 60/40 rule. The best-tasting steaks are seared on both sides and cooked evenly in the middle. The simplest way to do that is to only flip your steak once. The 60/40 rule suggests that 60% of your cook time should be spent on one side, and 40% on the other.

6. Keep the lid closed. It may be tempting to peek, but trust the experts and keep it shut! Opening the lid makes your grill lose heat, which makes steaks cook unevenly.

7. Check for doneness. A meat thermometer will give you the most accurate temperature reading:

• Rare: 120°F

• Medium Rare: 130°F

• Medium: 140°F

• Medium Well: 150°F

• Well: 160°F

8. Let your steak rest. Pull your steaks from the grill once they’re cooked to 5-10 degrees below your target temperature and rest for 10-15 minutes.

MAKE AN IMPACT FOR DAD

Memorable Ways to Celebrate The Father Figure in Your Life

What do you buy for the man who has everything? Perhaps an experience oriented around what dads value most – time together – is just what he needs. Fathers and father figures are invaluable in our lives. They help shape and mold us. They’re there for us and support us. If you haven’t already planned something special, take a look at our list of ideas and circle your favorites. If you have kids, let them join in the fun too!

Whether you decide to spend a day at home or enjoy a day on the town, these innovative celebration ideas will include fun for the whole family and make Dad feel loved. Whatever activity or surprise you land on to show your dad, husband, brother or father figure your appreciation for all they do, the most important thing is that you all get to spend some quality time together.

LEARN ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE

Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!

GO ON A BIKE RIDE

Find a local trail you haven’t tried before, load up the bikes and set out for a day of riding. Finish off the day with a nice meal out after all your hard work.

GO BIRD WATCHING

Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, nature-filled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.

MAKE A TIME CAPSULE

Dig a hole in your backyard and have Dad help the kids gather items around the house (like a current newspaper or flyers) and put them in a waterproof bag.

Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.
