twenty years. Primary care can prevent it from ever getting to that point.” After researching primary care practices, Davis chose to pursue the direct primary care (DPC) model. Because the practice relies on membership fees for compensation and not insurance payments, Davis and his staff can better focus their time on patients in the office and use telemedicine when appropriate. Although many patients do have insurance, many find the fees associated with DPC are less than copays and deductibles associated with insurance plans. The DPC model provides benefits for businesses as well as individuals. “We’ve had a significant increase in the number of businesses that have joined in providing DPC as a benefit to their employees. This not only helps with their employees’ health, but with preventative care, can decrease sick days and trips to urgent care and emergency rooms,” explains Davis. “From what we’ve seen, employers see incredible value behind this. It is one of the less costly benefits an employer can provide, but it’s one that employees are more satisfied about.” With growth comes exciting changes. “We’ve seen some amazing growth and a lot of recognition within the community, which is humbling,” says Davis. “Because of our growth, we hired another Physician Assistant in January… her name is Kelsey Clegg PA-C. In the fall, we’re moving to a new, larger location (within eyesight of the current location) and we will be formally merging with two other DPCs that we’ve always worked with to rebrand as Welcome Health. This will give us a stronger community presence, better negotiating power to further decrease costs for imaging/medication/labs and accommodate larger businesses that want to enroll.” Evans Direct Primary Care is located at 1202 Town Park Lane, Suite 105 in Evans. HUNTER WELLS OWNS TWO LOCAL BUSINESSES IN THE CSRA

Being an entrepreneur takes a special kind of mindset. There are challenges, but the rewards that come with it far surpass them. For Hunter Wells, owning your own business, or two, comes naturally. Hunter Wells grew up in the CSRA and has always had the entrepreneurial mindset. When he was just ten years old, he would earn money by putting up Christmas lights and decorations in his grandmother’s neighborhood. As he got older, he started a lawn care business and then later started a pressure washing business. In late 2018, Hunter started Supreme Siteworks, a land clearing and grading business. He was already experienced in the field because he previously worked for his uncle Terry Davis, who owned Augusta Ready Mix. After his uncle passed away, Hunter decided to utilize his experience to start his own company. “Supreme Siteworks was my first big-time business,” says Hunter. Hunter’s newest venture is PartyQuip Augusta. “Last October, I bought PartyQuip Augusta on a whim and it has grown 25% bigger within six months,” says Hunter. PartyQuip Augusta can service events such as weddings, corporate events, sporting events, commercial

events, and much more! “Anything that has to do with tents, tables, chairs, linens… we can do,” says Hunter. Linens are available in multiple color options to best fit your needs. “We have everything you can think of; black, silver, white, red gingham, blue gingham, gold… anything you can think of, we have them,” says Hunter. Hunter’s fiancée, Hannah, handles creating and sending invoices and estimates, answering phone calls, and putting packages together. Hannah says that one of the bonuses of working with Hunter is getting to spend extra time with him. “We’re a smaller company that can cater to people’s needs faster and more efficiently because you’re dealing with either me, Hannah, or one of my guys,” says Hunter. When talking about previous jobs Hunter and his team have done, one in particular sticks out to Hunter. “Masters week at Sheehan’s Irish Pub, that’s our favorite of the year. We love working for the owner and you’re right in the middle of Augusta with planes flying over you with all the Masters guests. You really can’t beat it, that’s Masters week in Augusta,” says Hunter. There, Hunter and his team set up two tents with sidewalls, sixteen tables, one hundred ninety-two chairs, lighting, decorations, and depending on the weather, heaters and fans. When asked if he had any advice for those considering starting their own business, Hunter says to chase it and never stop because no matter what you do, there will be challenges so you should never stop chasing it. He also suggests looking to those who are close to you for support. Hunter’s grandfather, affectionately known as ‘Pa’, has played an important role in Hunter’s life. He has been there for Hunter since the beginning and continues to show support for him everyday by providing him with guidance and encouragement. JAY VERGARA TRAVELS THE U.S. PHOTOGRAPHING INCREDIBLE CARS

PHOTOGRAPHING HIS PASSION JAY VERGARA Jay Vergara is a car photographer and videographer. He grew up in the Philippines and moved to the CSRA in 2017, now Jay travels the U.S. photographing for car shows and companies. His love for photography started when he was just a little kid. “I started photography when I was twelve years old. I didn’t have my own camera back then, but I had a friend who had a DSLR camera that I started using,” says Jay. “I fell in love with photography and kept begging my mom to buy me a camera. After a year, she decided to give me one of the cheaper DSLRs, which was definitely more than enough, and I was super happy about it! When I got it, I spent countless hours looking on YouTube trying to learn every single thing there was on a camera.” “In college, I kind of lost interest in photography because everyone told me that I needed to figure out what I wanted to do and that I wouldn’t get anywhere with photography,” remembers Jay. He went to college for computer engineering for a year and afterwards, he joined the military. “While waiting to be shipped out, I took another course, which was information technology majoring in digital arts. So, it was kind of a mix of computers, but I still got to do art. I got back into photography then and actually started doing videography,” says Jay. “When I got shipped out, the military was conducting tests and we found out that

I’m colorblind. Before then, nobody really liked the photos I made. They were ok, but they weren’t the best. It’s kind of hard to get into an art that requires you to see color when you’re colorblind.” Jay became discouraged and felt there was no point in continuing photography. Others had told him that he wouldn’t be able to make money and needed to find another career. Four years went by without him holding a camera when he started watching Peter McKinnon, a photographer and filmmaker, on YouTube. “I just wanted to do photography as a hobby because it was fun. I didn’t really want to quit because I loved doing it,” he shares. Jay started researching how to use graphs and histograms to edit his photos. “When I edit a photo, I’m not even looking at the photo. I’m looking at numbers, so everything is a value to me,” says Jay. “I didn’t think I would get anywhere with it or make any money. I was at a car show one day and a company walked up to me and asked how much I would charge to make them a video. I had zero clue because if I worked with a company, I had to let them know I am colorblind,” says Jay. He decided to work with the company and offered his services at a discounted price. “I was just surprised because when they got the final product from me, they told me how

awesome it was. I never would have thought that I would have something like this,” says Jay. To encourage aspiring photographers, Jay says, “Don’t be scared to pick up a camera. You’ll hear a lot of judgment from other photographers because they forget where they came from. Often, business owners rely on themselves to run their business and will avoid doing the things that they need to do. Darin Myers from The Alternative Board is here to help solve those issues. The Alternative Board, TAB for short, offers peer-to-peer advisory boards that give business owners a forum to hear diverse thoughts and experiences and hold business owners accountable to doing things in their business that they should do. “I retired from the position of site Vice President at Plant Vogtle about two and a half years ago and decided that I wanted to do something different. I started The Alternative Board to go after similar issues that I saw in my own organization at Plant Vogtle. One of the things I look for in TAB prospects is people that say ‘my business drives my personal life or I don’t have time to do anything else.’ The TAB boards force business owners to work on their business as much as they work in their business,” says Darin. TAB helps forward-thinking business owners grow their businesses, increase profitability, and improve their lives by leveraging local business advisory boards, private business coaching, and proprietary strategic services. “What makes us different from a lot of other coaching consulting firms is that we are a peer-to-peer advisory board consisting of business owners, CEOs, and key decision makers from non-competing sectors which I recruit. We form a board of directors where we meet in a group setting in a confidential, non-disclosure agreement where we bring our issues or opportunities to the table and use each other as a sounding board. For example, one of my current boards has over 150 years of local business experience. Eight minds put together are better than one,” Darin explains. His experience in the nuclear power industry has given him the skill set needed for managing

a business. “I spent my entire professional career in corporate America in the nuclear power industry. Running a nuclear power plant can be difficult at times, but so is running a business. There are similarities in both large and small teams; you need to do strategic planning, hire excellent employees, and develop the talent to establish great teamwork and a healthy culture,” says Darin. Jason Rueggeberg, owner of Evans Sport & Spine Chiropractic Center, is a member of TAB. “As a small business owner, I didn’t have access to what large businesses have or advisory boards where you tell them ‘these are my goals, these are my challenges, I need some advice, and I need you to help me set realistic goals’. I’ve developed some great relationships with TAB and the wisdom is well worth the price of admission.
