Welcome to Wedges & Woods, a driving range and teaching center in Augusta, GA. The McNeil family opened Wedges & Woods in 1996. Nick Prokosa, who started working for the McNeils in 1997, gained experience in each area of the business before purchasing it and taking over ownership in 2008. Wedges & Woods has everything you need, whether you are searching for a place to practice your long and short game or looking for a way to customize your clubs. “We have ten outside mat areas to hit from, twenty grass areas, and sixteen short game areas to hit from,” says Nick. All the balls at Wedges and Woods are full flight balls. Other places may limit the flight to keep balls from going out of the netting, but with the large, open field measuring 320 yards, there is no need to limit flight. There is also a covered area with ten bays equipped with Toptracer. Toptracer can track the ball, which allows you to

monitor every shot as well as play games and virtual golf. Power Tee, the world’s premier automated teeing system designed to enhance your experience on the driving range, is also available for guests. You’ll also find a putting area onsite to help with your short game. Nick also handles club repairs and customizations. Having a club fit specifically for you plays an important role in golf. “At a box store, they have a computer you hit in, and the computer spits out a number. The problem with that is it really doesn’t fit you very well,” explains Nick. “When ordering custom clubs from manufacturers, nine out of ten times, they aren’t correct.” Because Nick works individually with customers to get exact measurements, he can customize every aspect of the golf club for a perfect fit. In addition to club customizations, you can bring your favorite set of clubs to the shop for repair, which Natasha McVicker, Back Office Manager and Nick’s sister, says is a lost art. “A lot of people now just buy new clubs when they need something instead of finding a set of clubs that works well for them and keeping them in good shape,” she explains. “You can replace the shafts and the grips to make those clubs last longer because they are clubs that you know work well for you. If you go out and buy a new set, you don’t know if those are going to work for you.” Many repairs can be done within 24-48 hours unless materials need to be ordered. “We're the only ones who really keep a full-service repair staff on hand for day-to-day work,” says Natasha. The shop also carries golf essentials like balls, tees, and gloves for purchase, with specialty items available by order. As beautiful spring weather beckons and golf fever grips the CSRA, remember that in addition to being open to singles and groups of golfers, Wedges & Woods offers rental of the facility for larger groups. Powell & Associates, has a passion for Augusta and it shines through when you talk with her. “I think Augusta is the hub of everything in the CSRA,” says Nancy. “When you want character and interesting things to learn about, Augusta is the best place to be. It brings quaint southern charm and mixes it with a downtown urban culture that is unique to Augusta.” When it comes to choosing the best places to visit in Augusta, it’s an easy choice to turn to Nancy, who as a realtor, keeps her finger on the pulse of the city. If anything, it’s tough for her to narrow down the list to just five places! “Augusta has everything and a place for everybody,” says Nancy. “The places that are my favorites are places that whether you're visiting, new to the area, or you've lived your entire life in this community, you're going to find entertainment, fun, and a good time at all of them. I can go to these places anytime of any day and enjoy it or find something new and different about it.” First on the list is the Augusta Museum of History. “It encompasses everything that is unique to Augusta from the Masters to James Brown, with information dating back to the building of the canal and the history of Augusta,” shares Nancy. “I learn something new every time I go.” The museum, which is open to the public during normal hours, also serves as a beautiful location for special functions such as weddings, receptions, and corporate functions. From there, Nancy suggests checking out the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, which includes different recreational trails and guided boat tours to learn the history of the canal. “I love the history of the canal and enjoy walking along the canal with my husband when it's warm,” she says. “We like that there are different routes for us to go and enjoy nature. To me, it’s an oasis within the city.” Another favorite place of Nancy’s is Augusta University’s Summerville Campus. “It's a place that I often visit, not just because of my affiliations with it as a graduate and member of the Summerville Alumni Society, but it’s just a beautiful, beautiful campus,” says Nancy. “There have been so many changes over the years and there is a feeling of being encompassed by both history and innovation at the same time. It's truly been made into a place that not only students can enjoy, but the community can enjoy too.” Not far from Augusta University’s Summerville Campus, you’ll find Surrey Center, a quaint outdoor shopping center that includes over fifty businesses. “It is probably my favorite place because I can shop and eat great food there,” shares Nancy. “It's a rich mix of culture and diversity - all in a little shopping center. They have many different kinds of restaurants, antique and collectible stores, and gift shops. It has a little bit of everything for everybody.” The tour of Nancy’s favorite places wraps up by spotlighting Downtown Augusta. With a wide variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, downtown has much to offer visitors and long-time residents. “It's a place where you can experience a lot of different things, whether you go during the day or at night, because there’s a diversion of cultures and personalities encompassed in one place,” explains Nancy. “One reason I have an emotional connection to downtown, and why I love it so much, is because I grew up listening to stories of how it was when my mother worked down there. Downtown Augusta was always portrayed to me as a thriving area and a fun place to be… and I believe that is still true today.” Whether you’re a visitor to the Augusta area or a resident, be sure to take the time to explore these and other wonderful places found all around the city. Forest Hills Golf Club

Originally designed by Donald Ross and built in 1926, Augusta University’s Forest Hills Golf Club encompasses a beautiful and classic style. “When you're on our golf course, it's like you've stepped back in time a little bit,” says Dan Elliott, PGA general manager and director of golf at Forest Hills. “It's got a very old Augusta look, not like the modern-day golf courses where it's white sand, water, and wide-open space. Our course is nestled in the pine trees, with rolling fairways and undulating greens; that's what sets us apart.” Over the years, Forest Hills has been host to some legendary golf moments. “In 1930, we hosted the Southeastern Open, which was played thirty-six holes here and thirty-six holes at the Augusta Country Club,” shares Dan. “Bobby Jones played in and won that tournament quite handily, and we all know what happened that year…. it was the same year he won all four majors as

an amateur. He has been quoted as saying it was the best tournament that he's ever turned out and that it was his best performance ever.” This semi-private club, which serves as the home course of the Augusta University men’s and women's golf teams, carries a membership of approximately two hundred and fifty members while also being open to the public for play. “We do have members that pay monthly dues and receive member privileges like advance tee times and special discounts in the golf shop,” says Dan. “We also host a monthly member tournament series that runs from February to November. In addition to club memberships, we are open to the public who can play here as daily fee players. We welcome guests, including those for Masters play.” The Club’s close vicinity to the Augusta National makes it a great option for golfers who, during Masters week, want to go to the tournament and play a round or two of golf themselves. As is par for the course in Augusta each spring, you never know who will show up to hit a few balls. “We still get some stars here during Masters week; they'll come out and hit range balls or come out late in the afternoon,” shares Dan. “It's kind of neat how we've been tied to Augusta National in that way.”

In addition to course play, Forest Hills offers a practice green, driving range, and golf instruction provided by two on-site PGA professionals, all of which are available to members and the public. Both groups of golfers and singles are always welcome. Depending on the time of day and demand for tee times, singles may be paired with a group for play. Although you can set up a visit through the website, Dan suggests you give them a call. “We always prefer personal interaction,” he explains. “By calling the golf shop, guests can ask questions and that allows us to set expectations and make their visit a personal experience.” The Grille, Forest Hill’s on-site eatery, offers signature sandwiches, salads, cold beverages, and a relaxed atmosphere. Carts equipped with GPS and Bluetooth capabilities are also available for rent. However, Dan says, “The golf course is in excellent shape, and it's well maintained. It's a joy to play and easy to walk.” Forest Hills is currently home to the Valspar Augusta Invitational, the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational, and the Augusta City Amateur golf tournaments.
