It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. In this issue, we hear from Barney's Pharmacy as they share how they take care of the seniors in our community. Jennifer Huff from Your Aging Therapist is helping her patients find the safest and easiest ways to perform tasks through in-home occupational therapy. Michael Murphy, owner of Murphy Auto Group, wrote Dennisisms in memory of his father, Dennis Murphy. Hear from Michael as he shares about his father’s life and the important lessons Dennis taught Michael on page 12. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. DENNISISMS MIKE MURPHY SHARES HIS FATHER'S INSPIRING STORY Michael Murphy, owner of Murphy Auto Group, says he learned many important life lessons from his dad, Dennis Lee Murphy. Dennis’ story of how he pulled himself out of poverty is not only inspiring, it is motivating. Michael shared a moving eulogy of some of the lessons he learned from his father at his father’s end of life celebration. Many of Michael’s friends and family had expressed interest in Dennis’ story so as a tribute to his father, Michael wrote Dennisisms. In Dennisisms, readers learn the top leadership lessons that shaped Michael into the man he is today.

“Dad was amazing. He grew up in Kendall, Florida and came from a really poor family. Grandpa couldn’t read or write, and Grandma had a few jobs to help provide,” says Michael. When Dennis was seven years old, he wanted to play baseball. “Grandpa had dad and Uncle Larry selling newspapers so Uncle Larry would go and sell for dad so that he could play baseball,” says Michael. Dennis discovered that he had a talent for sports and at thirteen years old, he won MVP of the All Star Game from Miami. After high school, Dennis was drafted to play baseball for the Dodgers minor league. In 1972, Dennis came back to Florida to try out for the Phillies. His brother, Larry Murphy, told him he should come sell cars. “Dad said ‘Why would I want to sell cars?’ Uncle Larry told him that the job comes with a free demo and Dad said, ‘I’m in’,” Michael laughed. “One of the coolest things about my Dad is that he never owned a car. He sold them but never actually owned one... he always had a demo.” Dennis started selling cars and with his great leadership skills, he owned multiple dealerships. “Because we did not quit, we took a dealership in the bottom 10% of performing dealerships and, in one year, turned it into a top 10% performing dealership,” says Michael. After sixteen years as an Occupational Therapist in skilled nursing facilities, Jennifer Huff now takes therapy and care to patients in their homes through her service, Your Aging Therapist. “I started feeling like I had less autonomy with my decision making as a therapist and being able to really care for the patients like they needed,” says Jennifer. “Now, I have the freedom, autonomy, and the ability to really feel like I’m able to do occupational therapy and help older adults.” Functional therapy best describes the focus of occupational therapists. “If you or your loved one are not functioning well, we can assess and find where a breakdown is occurring in the task and determine a way to address it,” explains Jennifer. “We’re problem solvers. We’re looking to find the safest and easiest way to perform any task that is challenging to the patient.” “Occupational therapists focus a lot on the patient being able to return to what they were doing before a stroke, injury, or surgery,” she continues. “I do a lot of self-care independence, so we can adapt and modify tasks to help them relearn how to do something.” Anyone who has noticed a change in their physical ability to perform tasks easily, whether the tasks are routine or connected with a hobby or sport, would be a good candidate for occupational therapy. “I feel like occupational therapy is beneficial for everyone in almost every scenario,” says Jennifer. “Occupational therapists are big on function, what is important to the client, and allowing clients to continue doing things they love by learning how to adapt the task so that they can still participate.” After a hospitalization, patients are often prescribed home health care as part of their recovery. Jennifer steps in as home health care finishes. “Once the home health time is over, there are a lot of cases

where there are additional things to be done or covered and that’s where I come in,” explains Jennifer. She can assess for further care, train care givers, or make sure patients continue any exercise or activities put in place by home health. Therapy provided through Your Aging Therapist is billed as outpatient services and Jennifer files paperwork on behalf of her patients to Medicare and supplemental insurance companies, just as when a patient is in a facility. The largest benefit of Your Aging Therapist is that she comes into the home. “Care givers and people who have been in the hospital are recovering at home and they don’t want to have to go to a facility for outpatient therapy,” says Jennifer. “This is a way to have that therapy come to you in the comfort of your home. People are more comfortable in their homes as well. It creates a scenario of feeling comfortable and being more willing to participate.” It’s important to note that Jennifer can provide preventative care. “I’m a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist and focus on helping older adults remain in the home and age in place, meaning not having to go to assisted living or a skilled nursing facility, if possible,” says Jennifer. “My niche is home safety and home program development. I’ve also found that families appreciate me helping them come up with a schedule for their loved one and assessing the safety in the home to prevent falls.” “I feel like you have a therapist for life and one of the most fulfilling parts of my job is being able to build relationships with the patient and their families,” she shares. “I take pride in being one of the people in their caregiver team and becoming like family.”

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. “It’s an interesting moment in time. There’s this heightened sense of, ‘how do I become more resilient, how do I boost my immune system?’ Health and wellness is way more in the spotlight, and the trend of more people being at home has launched a new consumer process,” they say. It doesn’t hurt that they are designed with your home in mind. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. Ryan also compares it to working out, citing weightlifting as an example. “The whole thing is tearing your muscles down so they become stronger. You are going through an intentional stressor. You will get a relaxed response after, but you are intentionally putting yourself into a fight or flight state. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan has his own process—getting in, breathing four seconds in and four seconds out, transitioning his hands in and out of the water because their different nerve endings create a different blood flow and kick off the fight or flight mechanism. His nervous system then calms down and his mind sets into calmness roughly two and a half minutes in. After a three minute plunge, he comes out super energized with mental clarity. “It feels like a back door to meditation for people who don’t meditate, i.e. two to three

minutes vs twenty,” he says. “It’s a totally different process, but you push out the mental chatter and you become more present.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. “A lot of people who come for our product just want to do hard things, uncomfortable things. They say, if it’s good for me AND it’s difficult, then they are completely motivated by that.” The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. “One of the things that has been rad that we did not anticipate is parents doing it with their children,” he says. “It’s become this ritual where they do it together, a family plunge.” CrossFit frontman Rich Froning told the team that the coolest thing about having The Plunge is doing the plunge together every night with his daughter. It’s another layered benefit for their clients to know, one of creating special time around doing something uncomfortable and getting healthier, together.
