It’s finally here! Shorter and colder days, leaves turning from bright green to burnt orange and red, and PUMPKINS! I am a lover of fall and always decorate my house with cozy blankets, decorative pumpkins, and candles that smell like freshly baked pecan pie. One of my favorite things about fall is the seasonal food that comes with it, and the best way to enjoy these foods is tailgating with friends! Pastor Keith Walton Journey Community Church - Sherwood Pastor Keith Walton of Journey Community Church - Sherwood is on a mission to feed the homeless. “I noticed there were people living under the Windsor Spring underpass,” says Pastor Keith. He realized how fortunate he is to have a comfortable building to stay in everyday and that he wanted to help those who do not have anywhere to go. “Every second Wednesday of the month, we open our campus for the community to give people food and clothes,” he shares. It is also important to Pastor Keith that people have access to fresh vegetables. So, he and members of the church planted a vegetable garden on campus. Karen Strite Upside of Downs “We are a Down syndrome support group to encourage families and provide links to helpful resources that can be found in the area,” explains Karen Strite, the organization’s president. “We have social events and provide scholarships for individuals with Down syndrome for education and for participation in programs like Steps of Grace Ballet. Additionally, we are trying to bring Gigi’s Playhouse to the area and would love the community’s support in doing so.” On October 22nd, Upside of Downs will hold its annual fundraiser, the Buddy Walk, at Evans Towne Center Park. Officer Mary Payne Columbia County Board of Education School District Police Blue Ridge Elementary School We would like to say thank you to Officer Payne who protects our children at Blue Ridge Elementary School! A typical day for Officer Payne involves greeting students, checking the building to make sure all doors and windows are locked, and making sure everything is safe at school. “We are there to support our administration and staff. I’ve been at Blue Ridge Elementary for four years and I absolutely love it! Those babies are like my babies. They know they can come to us for anything they need and that we are here for them,” says Officer Payne. Thank you Officer Payne for your dedicated work and keeping our children safe!
Pam Lien Knitting For Others “We knit hats for the newborns at Piedmont hospital,” says Pam Lien, founder of Knitting for Others. For fifteen years, this group of ladies from the CSRA has been meeting once a week and have made thousands of hats for newborns. Every few months Pam will drop off the hats at the hospital. “We take anywhere from one hundred to one hundred fifty hats each time. The nurses get so excited when we bring them,” says Pam. “We also make teeny tiny hats for Resurrection Lutheran Church. They have tiny hats, dresses, and blankets for babies who have passed,” says Pam. If you would like to knit or crochet hats for newborns, the ladies of Knitting for Others meet at Edgar’s Bakery inside the Fury’s Ferry Goodwill every Thursday from 10am to 2pm.

UBU Bakes: A Feast for Your Senses NICK PRAVATO FILLS EACH OF HIS SWEET CREATIONS WITH HOMEMADE GOODNESS AND FINISHES THEM OFF WITH BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE DESIGNS

In 2012, Nicholas Pravato, Jr. landed his first dessert-focused job at a local bakery. Although he started off working the front counter, during slow times, he was able to learn techniques of the business. “From that point on, I really fell in love with making desserts,” shares Nick. “I am Hispanic and Italian, so everybody in our family always hangs out in the kitchen cooking and eating. I've always loved to bake, especially around the holidays, with my grandma and my extended family - plus I have a ‘sweet tooth’, so being able to make things myself and learn how to decorate them was so much fun!” Combine this love of cooking with skills he acquired through years of fine arts classes, and you’ve got the amazingly beautiful and unique desserts created by Nick, who currently serves as the pastry chef at the Partridge Inn. “As the pastry chef, I get to make CONTINUED >

all the dessert menus and create fun pastries like macarons, crème brulé, biscotti, and cannolis.” Nick enjoys baking and creating in his spare time as well, and in 2019, he opened UBU Bakes (pronounced “oo-boo” bakes) with support of now-husband Matthew Pravato, through which he offers custom-designed cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other pastries. Even the business name reflects Nick’s creativity. “When I was trying to come up with a name for my business, I was looking online at different blogs about the best way to come up with a name and there are a lot of fun, cute, catchy things out there,” says Nick. “One blog mentioned making it clear to people what you do and having something in your business name that represents who you are. So “Ubu” is a childhood nickname my grandma (Monga) used to call me and “bakes” is what I do…. so I put the two together.” Nick’s creativity for flavor combinations and decorating knows no bounds. Although he offers signature and seasonal

flavors like red velvet, coconut, apple spice cake, and vanilla, he likes hearing what clients come up with for flavor combinations. For those not sure exactly which flavor profile they want, Nick offers a tasting box to help. No matter which flavor or decoration theme clients choose, each custom dessert is sure to look and taste amazing. “I specialize in baking everything from scratch and using local ingredients, like eggs from my parent’s chickens, just like grandma would with no shortcuts,” explains Nick. “It's fresh, homemade, and with the way I bake, your cake is not even twenty-four hours old when you get into it… and always made with butter.” Although Nick especially loves making wedding cakes, he looks forward to being a part of all kinds of special occasions like graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and even a surprise treat for a loved one! The Pink Wave THOUSANDS OF BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS WILL FLOOD THE STREETS OF AUGUSTA FOR THE MIRACLE MILE WALK

PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Over the last twenty-two years, the Piedmont Augusta Foundation’s Miracle Mile Walk has raised millions of dollars to help women in the CSRA have access to life-saving mammograms, which help in early detection of breast cancer. After two years of hosting the walk as a drive-thru event, this October 15th, the streets of downtown Augusta will once again be flooded with the Pink Wave of walkers to celebrate breast cancer survivors and give hope to women everywhere. Amanda Richardson, who has been spearheading the walk since 2018 in her role as Development Officer at the Piedmont Augusta Foundation (formerly the University Health Care Foundation), loves that the walk will return in-person full force this year. “We're so excited,” shares Amanda.

“For the last two years we still got to celebrate survivors and raise a significant amount of money to serve our purpose, which is ultimately to make more survivors. However, being able to get back to the Augusta Common…. it's a tradition and we love it.” One of the most exciting aspects of the Miracle Mile Walk stems from the fact that the money raised benefits women right here in the CSRA. “All the money that we raise helps fund mammograms for under insured and uninsured women right here our community,” explains Amanda. “It supports the Piedmont Augusta’s Randy W. Cooper, MD, Center for Breast Health Services and it also helps keep the region's only mobile mammography unit out in underserved areas in this community. The mobile mammography unit serves twenty-three
counties in Georgia and three in South Carolina. Since the program began, the mobile unit has performed 72,000 screening mammograms and has traveled over 260,000 miles, with approximately 350 diagnoses of cancers.” Together, the Center for Breast Health Services and the mobile mammography unit strive to provide all women with the best possible screening and diagnostic services. “The Piedmont Augusta Foundation also helps fund mammograms at the Breast Health Imaging Center, and they really pride themselves on the fact that they don't have to turn anyone away,” shares Amanda. "No one gets left with a problem. If a patient needs further diagnostic screening or even a biopsy, the foundation is there to help. Should someone receive a diagnosis, they follow patients from diagnosis, through treatment, CONTINUED >

and into survivorship. Which is important because, unfortunately, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.” Amanda hopes to have the largest crowd yet join the morning full of activities on Saturday, October 15th. “The pre-walk program starts at 8:00am at the Augusta Common, located at 836 Reynolds Street, and the walk will kick off at 9:00am,” explains Amanda. “It’s a three-mile fun walk starting in downtown Augusta at the Augusta Common. We walk in front of Piedmont Augusta Hospital and come back down to end at the Augusta Common. Once we’re back there, we do a post-walk celebration and raffle drawings.
This year we’re raffling off a golf cart and some other great prizes.” Included in the festivities is a survivor tent where breast cancer survivors can check in and pick up special survivor gifts. Other stations include a place to drop off donations and opportunities to purchase raffle tickets and a variety of Miracle Mile Walk merchandise. Praline Pecan Crunch Snack Mix Ingredients • 8 cups brown sugar or cinnamon cereal squares • 1 cup pecan halves • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 3 tablespoons butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups white chocolate-covered pretzels • 1 cup salted peanuts • 2 packages of large waffle cones or paper bags Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.

Football Apple Hand Pies Apple Hand Pies are a perfect hand-held dessert that tastes like fall Ingredients • 21 ounces apple pie filling, store bought or homemade below (you won’t need it all) • 1 tablespoon cinnamon • 2 package pie crusts (4 crusts), I use Pillsbury • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon milk • Store-bought icing in a tube for laces (optional) Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 2. Chop apple pie filling into small pieces and mix with cinnamon. Beat the egg with milk until combined. 3. Roll out the pie dough to ⅛-inch thick and cut the dough into12 football shapes. 4. Add 1 ½ tablespoons apple pie filling to 6 of the footballs. 5. Brush egg wash around the edges and top with remaining 6 football shapes. Use a fork to crimp the edges firmly together. Make two slits on the top of the pie. 6. Brush with the remaining egg wash and bake for 12 minutes. 7. After cooled, pipe on laces with icing if using. Notes • Hand pies can be baked in an air fryer for 8-10 minutes at 350°F. • Any flavor of pie filling may be substituted.
