pin, I dawn my Santa hat as soon as the clock strikes midnight on October 31. Don't get me wrong, I love Halloween. But Thanksgiving and Christmas are my jam. It's so easy to get caught in a rut, to focus on the bad instead of good and ultimately give up on trying to find the happy in even the worst of situations. But November offers the perfect time to regroup; to stop, find yourself in the flurry of it all and tell yourself, "I, and every other human being, am worthy of love." Although it may seem silly, that's really what this time of year is all about. We gather on Thanksgiving–sharing smiles and belly laughs between bites of buttery mashed potatoes and wholesome pumpkin pie–and on Christmas–sharing family traditions and watching little ones viciously tear open their presents, gasping in pure joy when they see that Santa has brought them the gift they've been asking for all year long–to spread love and happiness with one another. To experience these moments is to be blessed, regardless of the little things that may have went wrong or the worries of what could happen tomorrow or the next day that cloud your mind. Ground yourself. Be in the moment. It's not silly. Rejoice in all that Thanksgiving and Christmas have to offer, even if that means putting up with your mother-in-law's annoying laugh for a few days or taking on the burden of cooking for 15 instead of four. In the spirit of it all, I'd like to remind each and every reader how thankful I am for your continued support and attention each month. You all inspire me to bring you a heart-

A Clean Fight YOUR ANSWER TO THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC

ARTICLE MOLLY HOTTLE | PHOTOGRAPHY CAROLINE DOCKERY 18

Asheville Lifestyle | November 2018

AMERICA’S BATTLE AGAINST CHRONIC PAIN The dangers of opioid addiction are well known, and the reach of chronic pain that has led to this country’s growing opioid dependence cannot be understated. In 2017, nearly 50,000 people died of opioid overdoses, which translates to about six people per hour, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Meanwhile, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that more Americans suffer from chronic pain than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined. Chronic pain is also the most common cause of long-term disability. So, what’s the answer for America’s chronic pain problem? Some are advocating for safer drugs, physical therapy or non-addictive, healthier treatment alternatives. At The Joint Chiropractic, they believe spinal manipulation and chiropractic care may offer the best solution. Many reputable medical authorities agree. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the CDC and the American College of Physicians (ACP) have all endorsed spinal manipulation as a valid alternative to opioid prescriptions for treating chronic pain. HOW CHIROPRACTIC CARE CAN HELP Chronic pain often involves a mechanical element. This means part of the problem involves structural components such as bones, joints and tissues, and how they are functioning. The chiropractic adjustment directly addresses the structural pieces of joint and bone position, as well as restoration of proper range of motion. This is particularly helpful when the source of chronic pain is the spine, which encases the central nervous system, responsible for all function within the body including such natural occurrences as blinking and breathing. When spinal joints are restricted or misaligned, two common outcomes are pain and improper function in related body parts. Inflammation within the tissues is also a frequent cause of chronic pain. The chiropractic adjustment can improve joint motion, which facilitates proper healing of injured tissues. Inflammation often decreases following the adjustments, which are typically made to the spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and ankles. When inflammation decreases, so, too, does pain.

A CLEAN FIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

To put it simply, chiropractors attack pain at the source by using gentle manipulation to remove restrictions from the spine, which often leads to pain relief. With ongoing care, this is one of the most effective methods for managing chronic pain in an individual. WHY IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE A BETTER CHOICE? Think of it like this: Chiropractic addresses the cause of the pain, while opioids only mask it. It’s a natural remedy with very few side effects and zero risk of physical addiction. The practice is gentle enough to be used for an entire lifetime. It may also bring other benefits such as a boost in the immune system, a reduction in joint pain and headaches, a higher activity level and a better feeling of overall health. Americans need more solutions for combating chronic pain. If you are interested in trying chiropractic care as an alternative treatment for pain relief, consider The Joint Chiropractic. Their walk-in visits, evening and weekend hours and affordable pricing provide immediate access to the care you need without the hassle.

Asheville Lifestyle | November 2018

AS WE TRANSITION FROM SUMMER INTO AUTUMN, LEAVES FALLING AND WEATHER GROWING CHILLY, WE ARE REMINDED THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL SEASON IS ONE OF BEING THANKFUL AND GIVING.

Bounty & Soul knows these principles well. Bounty & Soul is a nonprofit dedicated to serving undernourished communities by providing health and wellness resources, nutrition literacy and fresh and healthy food at no cost to their participants. The organization uses an intentional and community-based approach to reach over 700 individuals every week. Their Rooted In Health™ lessons, workshops, classes

and more utilize evidence-based methods to bring the most up to date resources to attendees; all with the goal of nourishing, inspiring, teaching and connecting with individuals to encourage them to better their health and their lives. One of the first things one may notice when they show up to a Bounty & Soul market or class is the spirit of inclusivity and community. It’s immediately welcoming and accepting. Holly, who has been attending markets for a few months, said, “There’s a sense of community and not feeling stigmatized, and feeling support and normalization. I don’t feel scared anymore.” All five of their weekly markets provide participants with locally-grown, seasonal and fresh produce at no cost while encouraging the consumption of whole foods–fresh produce and whole grains–through onsite cooking demonstrations and take-home recipes. But Bounty & Soul doesn’t stop there. Their “whole person approach” to wellness includes many resources and opportunities for education and experience, such as free yoga classes and individual and group health coaching sessions. In these, participants learn tools that they can apply within their own lives to enhance their overall wellbeing. “Our model provides significant outcomes for those who put our teachings into practice. Local physicians are prescribing our programming to their patients who suffer from chronic diseases with good success," said Bounty & Soul Founder and Director of Programs, Ali Casparian. In such a season of thankfulness and giving, you can help Bounty & Soul in several ways. Every $1 raised becomes 3-4 days of fresh, healthy produce for families, seniors, children and others who struggle with hunger and their health. With only five employees, Bounty & Soul is also heavily dependent on the kindness and help of volunteers. People of all ages and skills can make a direct and measurable impact on the community through volunteer work with Bounty & Soul. Buncombe County alone has over 30,000 people struggling with food insecurity, and every volunteer has the power to help lower this number. If you are interested in learning more about their work or how you can get involved, please visit www.bountyandsoul.org. November 2018 | Asheville Lifestyle

tips ›› The holidays can be chilly. It’s a good idea to cozy up your guest room with some warm textures and colors. Try to create a contrast between the backdrop and some of the other pieces in your room. Accent the space with pillows or a side table to create contrast with a neutral throw.

›› Layering can create a sense of warmth within a space; compare it to layering your clothes on a cold day. Rugs or heavy drapes not only create depth, but offer warmth in the colder months. Window dressing can be changed out year-round, so in the winter, try some heavier weighted drapes. Heavier blankets are always appreciated on those particularly cold evenings. A frilled rug can also offer a comforting and warm touch.

›› Botanicals bring a fresh look to your space. It’s important to breathe some life into your guest room during the colder months when most of the greenery outside has browned. Plants are always a welcome addition.
