t's the time of year when vacation gets on the brain. The inescapable urge to get out of town and out of the routine for a little while. This issue, we wanted to focus on two other towns in the Southeast, one of which has a well-deserved reputation as a great place to visit, while the other is quickly developing one. Our focus in this issue is the unique places in these two towns that are family-friendly and well worth finding. Some of our most cherished (and funny) memories have been with our children on vacation, sometimes on the way to the destination. A few “Griswold family-esque” boondoggles on the road always make for great stories down the line, so we encourage you to take a road trip this summer to some of the other great cities across the Southeast.

Charleston is one of the country’s top wedding destinations, and The Cottages on Charleston Harbor offer a sweet retreat for brides and grooms-to-be. The property features two lawns on which to say “I do,” spaces lush with native marsh grasses and pristine white sands where the officiant’s voice blends with the lapping of waves. Rehearsals and receptions along the harbor or at the clubhouse keep the celebration going. Wedding parties can rent out a block of cottages to keep the ceremony intimate (no peeping outsiders peering from windows), and to house wedding guests before and after the celebration.

Musical Interlude ALOFT ASHEVILLE DOWNTOWN OFFERS MUSIC, THREE WAYS ARTICLE WESLEY BROWN | PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON

A

sheville is an undisputed music mecca. From downtown’s street corners to a dozen venues around town, this city is constantly

buzzing with the sounds of instruments plucked, beat and warbled. If there’s an epicenter for music within Asheville, it’s downtown. And it’s here that you’ll find a surprising musical hotspot, a place where drinks clink along to the beat of the music three or four nights a week. That place is the Aloft Asheville Downtown. Centrally located on Broadway and a stone’s throw from other great musical venues like the Orange Peel and the Fine Arts Theatre, Aloft’s lifeblood, like that of the town it calls home, is music. The modern destination has cultivated its own rich music scene. Weekend nights are for live music, but there’s always a way to get your tune fix at the Aloft.

SUNDAYS LIVE@ALOFT SERIES • Sundays Live@Aloft returns this month! This year’s performances will take place on May 28, June 25, September 24 and October 29. • These events are special for a number of reasons: • It’s the only time the Aloft’s rooftop level is accessible to the public, and the views are stunning. • A $5 suggested donation benefits a different local charity every concert. Past charities have included Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue, Friends of Connect Buncombe and the LEAF Foundation. • These concerts take place from 5 to 8 p.m. as the sun sets over Asheville. Guests can sip local craft brews and cocktails and nosh on light snacks throughout the performance.

They serve a varied and seasonal beer selection, including favorites from local breweries, plus great wines and small bites like pork tacos and fig flatbread. • W XYZ’s live music is free and open to the public.

ike so many chefs raised in the South, Zambra’s Brian Bennett cites his grand-

mother as inspiration for his career. “When I was young, we had family dinners on Sunday which Grandma was the star of. I liked to hang out in the kitchen with her, and that’s what got me started.” But the fare he slings in Asheville’s most romantic (and, according to many, most haunted) restaurant is a far cry from the Southern staples with which he grew up. Though often billed as a Spanish tapas bar, the chefs and owners of Zambra constantly collaborate on dishes that defy definition. “We’re all over the place. I wouldn’t even call us Spanish tapas anymore, we’re Asheville

tapas,” Bennett says with a laugh. “Our menu changes almost every week.” That’s not just thanks to the restaurant’s dedication to fresh,

seasonal fare, but also to the talented folks that are always in the kitchen. Part of what makes Zambra one of Asheville’s best date-night destinations is the variety of dishes you’ll find on their menu—the surprise, rather than the expectation. From North Africa to Europe, the influence of the flavors are impossible to peg down because they’re so varied. It’s like traveling the world in one night—or even one bite.
