THINKING OF SELLING THIS WINTER? HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD.

EQUAL HOUSING

OPPORTUNITY

SELLING A HOME DURING THE HOLIDAYS HAS 3 BIG ADVANTAGES: 1. Reduced Competition - Most sellers take their home off the market before the holidays to eliminate stress. This means more buyers checking out your home. 2. Motivated Buyers - Purchasers looking for a home during the busy holidays tend to be serious buyers and are ready to buy now. 3. A Decorated Home Shows Better - A cozy and tastefully decorated home allows buyers to imagine celebrating the holidays in your home next year. If you’re thinking of selling, please contact me for a complimentary copy of our Seller’s Guide. I would love to assist you with your next real estate move!

award recognizes both the Asheville Art Museum and UNC Asheville for their collaborative effort to tell the stories of artists and behind-thescenes work at the museum. Students in the Multimedia Storytelling for Journalism course learned how to research story ideas, interview sources, design compelling stories and produce story narratives in multiple media formats: written story, a photo story and a short-form video. The Exhibition award recognizes the Asheville ArtMuseum's 2016 exhibition Vault Visible: Behind the Scenes, which gave visitors an unprecedented look at the mysteries of museum work by providing one-on-one interactions with museum professionals at work in the gallery, presenting displays about collections care and stewardship,

those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Though there have been advances in the treatment of AIDS and laws put in place to protect those living with HIV, every year around 50,000 people in the US are diagnosed with HIV and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition. World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away—there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. This year, local organization WNCAP will produce a World AIDS day event that highlights the agency’s growth and is accessible to our highly diverse, intersectional and supportive community as well as clients, donors and other collaborators. A free community breakfast at Double Tree Hilton in Biltmore Village from 8 to 10 AM will allow WNCAP a public opportunity to commemorate World AIDS Day as a day of hope and unity in the ongoing fight against HIV-related stigma and new infections. For more information and tickets, call Randy Rodríguez at 828-252-7489 Ext 313 or visit WNCAP.org.

CRAFTED STRANGERS The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design's Crafted Strangers exhibit finishes up next month on January 6, making December's days the last to check out this unique show. Crafted Stranger's subject is the cultural restrictions and harmful stereotypes that result from the misleading narratives, created by US and Canadian government policies and popular media, that place people of color at society’s margins. Framed within the Native American and immigrant experience, Crafted Strangers explores how craft can be used as a tool for regaining control over how one chooses to define oneself. The

TASTES LIKE HOME CRANBERRY MUFFIN PIE AT BAKED PIE COMPANY ARTICLE EMILY GL ASER | PHOTOGRAPHY E VAN ANDERSON

18

Asheville Lifestyle | December 2017

I

f the holidays have a scent, it is surely the sugary waft of a fresh-baked pie. When the air is

thick with the honeyed perfume of a holiday pie, it calls all our hearts home—especially at Baked Pie Company. “I just wanted it to feel like you were coming home when you walked in,” says Kirsten Fuchs, her fingers wrapped around a steaming cup of joe, the air around her sweetened with that telltale eau de pie. Mission accomplished. It’s not just the sugar-sweet scent of her signature baked goods that make this Arden shop feel like home; it’s the carefully curated selection of vintage goods and faux taxidermy handcrafted by Fuchs’ daughter Haley. It’s the tin ceilings and the whitewashed floors and the barnwood. It’s the good coffee and the board games and the coloring books, dotted with sticky fingerprints and crayon shavings from happy, youthful visitors. It is a place wholly dissimilar to anywhere else in Asheville, born from the very absence of such an eatery. When Haley felt a hankering for a slice of blueberry pie while the two were running errands in Arden, their options were nonexistent. And so, after a few months of brainstorming and six months of recipe testing, Fuchs opened Baked Pie Company in April of this year. It turns out they weren’t the only locals on the hunt for the perfect piece of pie. “People have really welcomed us,” Fuchs says with a smile. “We’ve catered more to locals.” It’s locals who have come in for slices and big cups of coffee and whole pies for the holidays, and it’s the locals that have prompted Fuchs to open her second location in Woodfin. Like Arden, the new iteration of Baked Pie Company finds its home where so many of us locals find our homes—not among the hustle and bustle (and tourism) of downtown, but in the quieter suburban fringe. In addition to the new location in Reynold’s Village, Baked Pie Company is also expanding its original kitchen in order to supply the demand for wholesale orders. That’s on top of an ever-expanding menu of pies that range from classic, like the most-popular Honey Pecan, to totally unique, like Hawaiian Pineapple and Unicorn. Whatever the flavor, the pies are always 100% homemade by hand with zero fillers. Now that’s a story as sweet as pie. CONTINUED >

It’s a blustery December evening in New York City. A regular, seeking refuge from the cold and a cool cocktail to warm the spirit, sits down at the bar at Tenth Avenue Cookshop. She asks for a holiday classic—eggnog—to which bartender Brian Dubois responds with a drink of his own. Dubois is now the bar manager at our own Sovereign Remedies, but he’s still whipping up his answer to that customer’s specific request in the form of the Noggy or Nice. “With this cocktail, we’re able to provide the flavor profiles and texture of eggnog all season long,” he points out. This creamy concoction packs a punch, its rim lined with the spice rub from Chef House’s crispy pig ears—but it’s just as enjoyable at home by the fireside.

NOGGY OR NICE Sovereign Remedies' Twist on the Holiday Classic

ARTICLE EMILY GLASER | PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON

A

t the height of the craft cocktail movement, there are a series of American cities renowned for their aperitifs, places where

refined palates demand their drinks be made in an artful fashion, cities like New York, Portland, L.A. and San Francisco. With experience slinging and shaking drinks in four of those five domestic meccas, Charlie Hodge was more than prepared to bring that artistry to Asheville—which he did three years ago with local favorite Sovereign Remedies. Like so many adopted Ashevillians, Hodge fell in love with our mountain town upon his arrival, but the question of whether or not our sleepy enclave was ready for craft cocktails was largely unanswered. “When I got here five or six years ago, there was still a huge question if Asheville was going to feel a shift from just tourists visiting Biltmore to them coming downtown,” Hodge remembers. “There have always been really great people making great cocktails with a great local following,” Hodge recalls, citing old watering holes like Sazerac and Magnetic Field. Other great cocktail programs were on the rise as peripheral projects of great local restaurants, like Chai Pani’s MG Road and Table’s The Imperial Life. But still, Asheville lacked a true, stand-alone cocktail bar. And so Sovereign Remedies was born. “I am a bartender, and I opened a place that allowed us to do exactly what I wanted,” says Hodge, eyes alight. “Our first priority was to get the classics dialed and done perfectly. Now that we've establish a solid foundation, how do we start playing and having fun?” That’s a question that’s been answered in multitudes at Sovereign Remedies. First, in the form of an ambitious culinary program headed by Asheville native Executive Chef Graham House, which ties intentionally into the bar with seasonality and exceptional flavor profiles. And then there’s the bar program itself, which has grown recently to encourage collaboration and invention. Hodge smiles and declares, “We can get deeper now—our audi-

ence is listening.” Why yes we are.

Need a gift idea? Or just a little boozy cocktail to get you in the holiday spirit? This Fernet Hot Chocolate makes a perfect gift, or treat for yourself, this holiday and winter season. Fernet is an Italian amaro and digestif. During my trip to Italy this summer, I fell deeply in love with this digestif as a shot to have after a meal to settle the stomach. Not only is it delicious, but it works. Fernet has a blend of herbs that have notes of saffron, myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile and cardamom. It makes a lovely pairing with hot chocolate. This gift set makes 8-10 cups of hot chocolate with your favorite nut milk or milk. The fernet mini bottle is perfect for one drink. Other recommendations are bourbon or tequila. THE EVOLUTION OF A

s Asheville grows, so does her range of musical talent. Take, for example, Hunter Grigg.

The Johnson City, Tennessee, native got his start

in a local punk band, but his musical inclinations have always been broad. “I'd always valued and drawn inspiration from a number of genres and artists, from old country to rap and everything in between,” Grigg remembers. A college-era trip to Europe propelled Grigg’s notion of a career in music and, eventually, his move to Asheville. “I initially chose Asheville for the music scene and the community's undying appreciation for it,” Grigg says of our mountain town. “I also knew that the scene would only get bigger. Which is why I'm more interested in keeping Asheville my base now, ARTICLE WESLEY BROWN | PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON

because of that growth—in the scene, but also the city itself. The literal and figurative landscape of the area is shifting, quickly, and I think if it's harnessed properly and with that same amount of Asheville's love, it will truly serve artists like never before.” Grigg’s own evolution as an artist is certainly contributing to that burgeoning Asheville music scene, and it’s been an evolution indeed. “In the beginning, like any young artist, I wanted to be my contemporaries. But as I matured and had some rough experiences in the business, I knew I'd never be my favorite artists,” he notes. Grigg’s departure from simulating the sounds of his idols is what led to the discovery of his own sound. “It was then I began my journey to find Hunter Grigg. In essence, that transition really looked like a departure from a more traditional, folky mountain sound, to something a little rougher around the edges.” The result, meticulous and ranging acoustic guitar and earnest vocals and lyrics, is a sound wholly Hunter Grigg. The evolution is far from over for the Asheville artist, who’s currently recording his first full-length record with longtime friend and mentor J.B. Beverly. “With his aid, I am really beginning to capture some of my earliest musical foundations, which has shaped this process into a really beautiful experience of artistic creation and expression,” Grigg says. Upon the album’s release, Grigg plans to assemble the first Hunter Grigg Band and hopefully return to Europe, where his evolution began.

WITH HISTORY

If there's one house that knows how to deck the halls this season, it's the palatial Biltmore House. Biltmore's Floral Displays team spends months crafting and curating the annual Christmas display, including thousands of bows, hundreds of trees and innumerable sparkling lights. Needless to say, they're the experts, which is why we tapped them for a little DIY inspiration for your own home this holiday season.

Family traditions are a favorite topic at Biltmore, especially during the holidays. Incorporating family into Christmas decorating is a favorite design element with Biltmore’s Floral Displays team. This easy craft celebrates family during this special time of year with a Christmas ornament that can last for generations. YOU WILL NEED:

STEPS:

material, feathers, etc. 3. If your frame lacks a certain quality, have fun and experiment to change its appearance (for example, a frame with a shiny finish may detract from the softer elements of an old photograph). 4. To give it an aged appearance, gently brush or rub craft paint onto the frame (choose a hue that is darker than your frame). Don’t forget to paint the sides. Cut your photo to fit the frame and place in the frame. 5. Attach self-adhesive plastic hangers on the back of the frame. You can find hangers like this at most craft and hardware stores. 6. Thread your ribbon through the hangers, leaving enough ribbon to tie your ornament to the tree. 7. Create a tag for the back of the frame on which you identify who is in your photo and the year it was taken. You can make tags using your computer, or handwrite them for a personal touch. 8. Have fun with personalizing your frame. Glue small objects that have meaning to you onto the frame, such as beads, bows, stickers, dried plant material, feathers, etc. 9. Hang the framed photo on a tree limb; secure by tying to the limb.

Parting Thoughts

Pork Pâté

Made in-house in our kitchen with Hickory Nut Gap pork, this creamy, country-style pork pâté is nothing short of delicious, with a peppery taste and notes of garlic.

Housemade Cole Slaw

Made in-house in our kitchen, the creamy cole slaw cools off the plate, with peppery notes and a hint of sweet tartness.

Sliced Local Apples

Raised by Lyda Farms in Henderson County, these apples are crisp-crunchy, adding texture and a burst of sweetness.

Housemade Pickles

Also made in-house, these pickles add a bit of a bite to the plate, brightening the palate with a tart and sweet flavor.

An Appealing Appetizer HICKORY NUT GAP GUIDES OUR CHARCUTERIE DREAMS PHOTOGRAPHY EVAN ANDERSON

I

t may be a season of feasts, but when road-weary travelers trek through the front door or cocktail party attendees slip out of their overcoats and furs, they'll

be ravenous. You'll need snacks at the ready—and we don't mean those thumbprint cookies you whipped up for Santa. A charcuterie board, loaded with a fresh, local harvest, will keep their tummies tempered 'til dinner, plus it serves as an eye-catching centerpiece. In need of inspiration? Hickory Nut Gap's charcuterie boards are weighted with Ashevillian meats and cheese (plus they're available for purchase). Kelsey Winterbottom of Hickory Nut Gap walks us through the perfect board.

American Pig Hunter Salami

Also made with pasture-raised Hickory Nut Gap pork, this artisanal salami is made by Charles Lee of American Pig, a local Asheville charcuterer. This flavor is bold and complex, with deep, woodsy notes reminiscent of a crisp fall forest.

Lusty Monk Mustard

This local whole seed mustard is spicy and delicious, pairing nicely with the salami.

Caramelized Onion

Made in house in our farm kitchen, the caramelized onions boost the palate with a sweet aromatic flavor to complement the bold tastes of the charcuterie board. 42
