LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello Arvada!
October 2026 PUBLISHER
As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures cool, our cravings shift toward comforting flavors that warm both body and soul. October is one of our most delectable issues of the year, and this month we’re celebrating the food and drink that makes our city such a delight for the senses. For me, the smells of fall bring back memories of sitting in my grandma's kitchen. The aroma of cinnamon, baked apples, pumpkin pies, and hearty soups fills me with nostalgia. Now during fall, my family’s tradition is making a big pot of homemade chili for football Sundays, the kind of meal that warms you from the inside out. There’s an art to creating a dish that not only satisfies your taste buds but also stirs memories of home. Food has a unique way of connecting us to our past while bringing us together in the present. Whether you’re enjoying a meal out with friends or hosting a cozy dinner at home, these shared moments are what make life flavorful.

Home is more than an address. Lydia and her team went above and beyond what we could have expected. Lydia’s creativity and persistence fueled her interest in home that was off-market. She did an amazing job negotiating on our behalf and getting us home in the neighborhood we really wanted. We were very specific in what we wanted, and Lydia was patient and assisted us in coming through that took almost a year. During the crazy market this last year, Lydia did a great job capitalizing on the perfect timing in the market, just the crazy old house. Her team ensured that the process was organized and went smoothly. Lydia was always on time, knew the ins and outs of the market, helped guide us in difficult decisions, and was always available to answer our questions or listen to our concerns. We highly recommend Lydia and her team. — Ashley J.

THE award-winning flavors of TALNUA DISTILLERY Patrick and Meagan Miller share their passion for the Irish tradition of single pot distilling ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESS PERRY, LIFE IN PHOTOS
For Patrick and Meagan Miller, an outing to a pub fifteen years ago while on their honeymoon in Ireland ignited an idea and passion that led them to bring an ancient Irish tradition to America. “We were watching Team USA play Ireland at the Rugby World Cup. Although unfortunately the United States would lose that day, we got our very first taste of a whiskey called Red Breast 12-Year-Old Cask Strength,” shares Patrick. “It was the first time that this style of whiskey, called Single Pot Still Whiskey, was re-released to the Irish market in decades.” The couple went back to Ireland year after year, learning more about this unique single pot distilling process and sharing the product with friends. “It was Meagan's idea that we really seriously look into what it would look like to start our own distillery,” says Patrick. “Because nobody else in the U.S. was making this style of whiskey.” The idea took hold and the couple set out to learn about the commercial distilling process. Then, after developing recipes in their home, they found a space to house the distillery and started making whiskey in January 2018. They opened Talnua Distillery on St. Patrick’s Day in 2019.

Talnua Distillery is the only distillery in the U.S. fully dedicated to producing whiskey using the single pot distilling process, something that excites the couple. “The Irish invented whiskey centuries ago and it's a really beautiful thing to be a part of that heritage and reviving this ancient Irish distilling tradition here in the U.S.,” says Patrick. “That’s our namesake; Talnua is derived from the Irish word for new land. We are bringing this old traditional style of Irish whiskey making here to America.” “The distilling and craft manufacturing producers’ CONTINUED >

community is full of phenomenal people,” adds Meagan. “We love being a part of that community in general, but also like being the standard bearers of the style of whiskey that we make.” Made from barley, this style of whiskey is a perfect fit for Colorado, also known as America’s barley state. “What we're doing here effectively is espousing the provenance and terroir, that beautiful French word for a sense of place and the taste of something, of Colorado,” says Patrick. “The Colorado high county barley, Rocky Mountain water from El Dorado Springs, and our high altitude aging really impart a very different flavor profile than you would get for the same exact whiskey being made in Ireland.” Using different aging techniques and materials, Talnua whiskey comes in different varieties and flavors that please the most distinguished palates. “We have an American White Oak Cask Bottled-In-Bond whiskey that we say is distilled like an Irish whiskey but aged like an American bourbon in charred new American oak,” explains Patrick. “There is also our Cask & Stave Series that won America's Greatest Whiskey last year, which is a huge award for us. It is ex-bourbon barrels that we then add French and American oak staves to. We also have a Sherry Cask aged in Oloroso sherry and a Peated Cask aged in ex-Scottish single malt barrels that were heavily peated single malts, giving it a nice smoky element.” In addition to a variety of original whiskey products, the distillery has a full seasonal cocktail menu and hosts special events, bottle releases, and tours that allow guests an inside look at the process and even get them involved on volunteer bottling nights. In September, Talnua Distillery hosted a sesquicentennial event celebrating Colorado's 150th anniversary with a single barrel release. The event also served as a way to give back to the community by raising money for Colorado Open Lands through the distillery’s philanthropic arm, the Acorn Project. Stop in and visit Talnua Distillery, named the American Distillery Institute’s 2026 Distillery of the Year, at 5405 W 56th Ave, Unit C in Arvada. Talnua Distillery Talnua Distillery recently received the 2026 Distillery of the Year award, known as the Bubble Cap Award, from the American Distilling Institute. This prestigious honor, which singles out Talnua Distillery from 2100 distilleries in North America, recognizes the hard work by Patrick and Meagan Miller to produce high-quality spirits in an innovative way while supporting and engaging with the local community. “We’re grateful that ADI recognized not just our whiskey, but our team, our community, and our commitment to the craft,” says Patrick. “We’re really proud of what we’ve built over the past nine years, and it’s incredibly meaningful to see that work recognized.”

Mayor Lauren Simpson inspires others through sharing lessons, hope, and encouragement from her cancer journey ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE
Reflecting on her experience with stage one breast cancer, Lauren Simpson wants to spread a message of hope and a call to action. “I want to encourage people and let them know that it is incredibly important to get all your medical tests and scans done on time,” says Lauren. “As I've been sharing my story, a lot of folks who are elderly assure me that they get all

“I’ve always loved Arvada; but I don't think I've ever loved this city so much as I did through my recovery.” their checks done. But younger folks, those who are healthy in particular, often say that they’ve skipped their routine checks.” In addition to the call to action, Lauren shares several things that helped her as she faced her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. First, she says having a determined personality is a wonderful asset in these situations. “When faced with a problem, I tend to deal with it straight on,” shares Lauren. “I'm highly competitive and when something comes my way, I'm going to act and, in this case, start making doctor’s appointments. I was a highly motivated patient.” Next, the support she received from colleagues made it possible to balance her recovery with her work as Mayor. “One of the things that made this easier for me was the sheer competency of the people around
me, which is wonderful,” she says. “We have an amazing team at City Hall, including Mayor Pro Tem Randy Moorman, and the ability for me to turn over my mayoral duties for three weeks was so important.” The encouragement and support Lauren received from family, friends, and the community also lifted her spirits and kept her going. “The day I shared my diagnosis publicly, I started getting emails from people with messages like, ‘We're behind you. We love you. You're going to get through this,’” remembers Lauren. “When you're Mayor, people usually come to you when they're unhappy about something; they don't always come to you when things are going right or when they're grateful. This was an opportunity for people to step up for me, and it meant a lot.”

Lauren was pleasantly surprised by how people, even strangers, responded and reached out to her. “To me, the most meaningful part of all of this has been that I've had numerous women, both in person as well as strangers online, comment on articles about me that they were scheduling their mammogram right then,” she recalls. “I had numerous friends, including younger women, text me photos from their appointments saying, ‘getting it done because of you, thanks for the nudge.’” The outpouring of support also gave Lauren renewed appreciation for the people of Arvada. “I've always loved Arvada; but I don't think I've ever loved this city so much as I did through my recovery,” she says. “There was this incredible wave of public support. I came home from the hospital and there were all these cards, flowers, and care packages. I spent a month living in my downstairs recliner and my aunt, who came from Texas to help care for me, started taping cards to the wall around the fireplace. Every morning when I would wake up in that chair, the first thing I would see when I opened my eyes would be that wall covered in cards and well-wishes. I felt so uplifted and supported.” Other things Lauren says are helpful for someone walking through recovery are meals and food delivery gift cards so that people can enjoy their favorite coffee and take out from the comfort of home. Lauren also suggests connecting with local resources and nonprofit organizations such as Hope Chest, Epic Experiences, and Cleaning for a Reason. “I encourage people to look up resources that are available, both for their specific diagnosis or for their loved one, because there are so many resources out there,” she says. “There are so many good people doing good work, and you don't have to do this alone.”

making the harvest last A look inside Linda Engel’s garden, kitchen, and simple ways of savoring the harvest For Linda Engel, a garden is more than a summer pleasure. It is a connection to family, travel and the simple satisfaction of turning something grown at home into a meal shared with people she loves. Long before she was preserving tomatoes or writing cookbooks, Linda built a career in international sales, traveling the world at a time when young women were still uncommon in her field. Her father, a successful businessman, taught her to value reliability, relationships and doing a job well. “My travels gave me a love for our beautiful world and the various countries, people, traditions, and foods,” Linda says. Those experiences still show up in her cooking, where international flavors mingle with ingredients grown much closer to home. Gardening, however, was part of Linda’s life even earlier. She grew up in a family where homegrown food and home cooking were the norm. At 17, she started a houseplant business, selling plants she grew in a greenhouse her father built beside their San Diego home. She later earned an associate degree in general agriculture, dreaming of someday having an organic farm. Life took her elsewhere for a while, but the dream never disappeared. Today, her organic garden brings it full circle.

“It’s so joyful to watch the plants grow from a seed to a vegetable that I make a meal with or eat fresh off the plant,” she says. As summer fades, Linda’s attention shifts from growing to saving the harvest. Though canning is a traditional choice, she prefers freezing and drying. Blackberries, elderberries and raspberries become frozen syrups or are saved whole, while Western Slope peaches are sliced and frozen for winter cobblers, crisps and peach ice cream. Vegetables get equally practical treatment. Linda roasts tomatoes in five-pound batches and freezes them for tomato soup, dries Anaheim and cayenne peppers, roasts and freezes poblanos, and chops extra bell peppers for later meals. Herbs are air-dried or transformed into pesto and chimichurri. “Start small and simple. Start with a food that you love,” she advises anyone new to preserving.
Linda in her garden with her cookbook, “Garden to Table Cooking”
That was essentially how her first cookbook, Garden to Table Cooking, began. After finding her countertop overflowing with tomatoes and basil, Linda started preparing and freezing produce in ways she already enjoyed eating. The following season, she realized she wished she had written the recipes down. So she did. Year by year, the collection grew until one of her girls suggested she write a cookbook. Garden to Table Cooking followed, reflecting the fresh, flavorful meals Linda makes at home. Her second book, RV Dining, grew from another practical question. After buying a camper van in 2022, Linda wondered how she would cook fresh meals with one burner, a small refrigerator and little prep space. The resulting book offers simple meals designed for compact kitchens but equally useful at home.
Linda and her family harvest an abundance of elderberries each year, freezing them to last all winter long.
For Linda, preserving the harvest is less about stocking a freezer than extending the season’s pleasures. By winter, those frozen tomatoes can become a steaming bowl of soup, summer peaches return in a warm cobbler, and jars of pesto bring the garden back to the table. It is a rhythm she knows well: grow what you love, use what you have and share the bounty. You can grab a copy of RV Dining and Garden to Table Cooking at Outside The Box, AdiLuna Boutique, Carousel Gift Shop, and Malara Gardens. Mason Jar Lifestyle (online) and 5280 Sprinter Service offers copies of RV Dining only.
