A Month to Celebrate the Women in Our Lives
There’s something truly special about taking a moment to recognize the women in our lives who make the world more vibrant and beautiful. Whether it's our mothers, daughters, friends, or colleagues, these women are often the silent forces that shape our days and make life richer.

With Mother’s Day this month, our thoughts naturally turn to all those incredible women—biological mothers and mother figures alike—who have made an unforgettable impact on us. It’s the teachers, the friends, the neighbors, and the family members who offer their love, wisdom, and support in countless ways.
This month, as we celebrate these remarkable women, I also want to encourage you to support local businesses owned by women in our community. One of my favorite parts of this job is connecting with and championing the incredible women here in Arvada. From movers and shakers to makers and builders, these women bring so much to the table, both seen and unseen. Their contributions, often behind the scenes, create beauty and impact that cannot be replicated.
Take a moment this month to recognize the women in your life. Send a text, make a phone call, or arrange a video call with the women who have made a difference for you. It’s a simple but powerful way to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they’re loved.
Here’s to celebrating the women who make life so much more meaningful. Happy Mother’s Day and cheers to the ladies who inspire us every day!

Care That Puts People First
Why

Here’s why early removal matters
Fewer complications
If removed between the ages of 16 and 25, wisdom teeth tend to heal faster and lowers the risk of nerve damage, infection and dry socket
Prevent Crowding
Wisdom teeth can push on nearby teeth and cause shifting, affecting orthodontic work.
Avoid impaction
Impacted teeth cause pain, cysts, and infection.
Preempt sinus issues
Upper wisdom teeth can trigger sinus pressure and congestion.
Simpler surgery

Younger bone and roots make for a smoother, faster procedure.

MOTHER EARTH

The World that nurtures us
ARTICLE BY KRISTI SELLERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RACHEL AUDETTE- THE TURQUOISE CAMERA
There’s a reason we call her Mother Earth. Not out of habit, but out of familiarity. Long before we understood science or sustainability, we understood care. We understood what it meant to be held, nourished, and protected. Somewhere deep within all of us, we recognized those same qualities in the world beneath our feet.

Mother Earth needs us to care for her the way she has always cared for us.
Like any mother, she provides without needing to be asked. She grows the food that sits on our tables, filters the water we drink, and offers air with every breath we take. She presides over the rolling hills, blooming wildflowers and oceans that stretch endlessly toward the horizon. She gives. And then she gives even more.
And like many mothers, she does so without expecting any recognition in return.
It’s easy to overlook that kind of constant presence. Meals just appear, the spaces that feel safe, the small details that hold everything together, these are often the least recognized, yet essential. Mother Earth exists in a very similar space. She is the foundation of everything, yet rarely the focus of our attention.
But if we stop long enough to notice, her presence is there.
She wakes us gently with sunlight streaming through windows. She shifts the seasons like the
pages in a novel. Spring teaches renewal. Summer offers abundance. Autumn reminds us to let go. Winter insists on rest.
Mother Earth also teaches resilience.
She endures storms, droughts, fires, and floods, and yet she always endures. Grass grows back. Trees take root again. Rivers find new paths. There is no permanence in destruction, only the opportunity to rise again. It’s a lesson many of us need to remember that setbacks are not endings, but transitions.
And yet, like any mother, she is not a real super hero. She’s not Superman.
There is a misconception that she is unbreakable. But even the strongest caregivers have limits. When resources are taken without consideration or when respect is forgotten, the effects begin to show. Not all at once, but gradually, leading to subtle shifts that grow over time.

Mother Earth needs us to care for her the way she has always cared for us.
It begins with awareness, recognizing that our daily choices matter. The way we consume, the way we discard, the way we value what we have. Reducing waste, recycling, conserving water, and choosing sustainable products aren’t just environmental actions. They are genuine “thank you’s”.
Caring for Mother Earth can also be deeply personal. It can be the gardens we plant, even if they’re small. It’s in choosing to support local farmers or your neighbor's garden. It’s letting fresh air replace conditioned air or letting sunlight replace artificial light.
And perhaps one of the most meaningful ways we can care for her is by teaching the next generation to do the same.
Children instinctively understand the magic of Mother Earth. They find wonder in bugs, in puddles, in the way leaves crunch beneath their feet. Encouraging that curiosity and nurturing that respect creates true meaning. It ensures that care for the Earth doesn’t end with us, but continues.
Mother Earth is more than a resource. She is a presence and a quiet force that supports everything in our lives. And much like a mother, she doesn’t ask for recognition, but she certainly deserves it.
She deserves our attention, our respect, and our care.
There is something deeply comforting in knowing that no matter where we go, she is there. Beneath every step, beyond every sun, holding everything together in ways we often can’t see. She is large and small, powerful and gentle, enduring and always changing.
Maybe that’s why the comparison to a mother feels so fitting.
Because she loves unconditionally, consistently, and without expectation.
So, how do we show our love back?
We do so the best we can.
In the end, taking care of Mother Earth isn’t just about protecting the planet. It's about honoring the very thing that has always taken care of us.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
One thing I have learned from being a mom that influences how I run a business is empathy. I am raising two wonderful children, and I realize how important it is to see the individual and proceed with compassion.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
My kids would describe me as loving, adventurous, and fun!

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
I am great at multitasking and juggling many things at one time.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say? Nice, Wonderful, and Smart.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
Someone once told me I’ll never regret choosing my children over my job—but I might regret choosing my job over my children. That’s stayed with me. Motherhood taught me clarity and alignment. I don’t have time for what doesn’t matter, so I prioritize what moves the needle, set boundaries, and use my time intentionally. I’m constantly assessing whether my time and energy align with my values—because when they do, both my business and home life are successful.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
Considering they’re 7 and 5 and their vocabulary is still growing—I’ll translate: Loving. Giving. Compassionate.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned through motherhood that has also shaped how I approach my business: everything is temporary. The joyful moments, as well as the challenging ones, are fleeting. The highs are worth celebrating and fully embracing, because they pass more quickly than we expect. It’s important to be present and live “in the moment.” And the lows, while often challenging, are just as temporary. Even in the hardest times, there is a quiet reassurance in knowing they won’t last forever, and that brighter days are always on the horizon.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
Loving, Honest, Driven.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
At 23, I was a mother of three children five and under. Managing their competing needs taught me to remain calm under pressure, think on my feet, and work at a rigorous pace—skills that became the backbone of my professional life. Daily parenting required prioritization: deciding what truly mattered in a moment and reallocating resources quickly.
Motherhood also cultivated stamina and resilience. Frequent interruptions and unpredictable challenges trained me to recover fast, maintain focus, and keep momentum on long-term goals. I developed systems and routines to streamline repetitive tasks.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
Cuddly, Organized, Selfless.
Katie Kessler
What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
Motherhood has taught me that you won’t always get it perfect, but showing up, treating people well, and putting others first is what matters most. That mindset carries into our business, where relationships, trust, and hard work come before anything else. Some seasons are busy, but I’m committed to being present and doing right by the people who trust us, especially my own two.

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
Being a mom has taught me that people are not replaceable— they’re individuals with unique strengths. Each of my children needs support in a different way to bring out their best, and I carry that mindset into how I lead at Fade It. We extend that same care to our guests, making sure everyone feels seen, supported, and welcomed.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
Hardworking, caring, and always there for others—with a little humor, they might add “sometimes patient.”

What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
Being a mom has taught me the power of showing up even when things feel messy and unexpected. Those lessons guide how I run my business: pivoting when needed and always leading with empathy and heart.
If your kids described you in three words, what would they say?
Loving, determined, and a little silly.
Jess Perry
What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom that influences how you run your business?
My children have taught me that time moves far too quickly. I began this business to preserve those precious moments for my own family, wanting to hold onto each stage just a little longer. Today, I bring that same passion to every session, capturing the sweet moments that I know first-hand are gone in the blink of an eye.

The Art of Balance

Rheinlander Bakery owner Loren Naftz shares how she has learned to balance life as a mom and female entrepreneur
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIFE IN PHOTOS - JESS PERRY
Loren Naftz, Owner of Rheinlander Bakery
As a wife, mother, and owner of Rheinlander Bakery, Loren Naftz knows firsthand the delicate balance of work and family life. She and her husband, Luke, love fostering a family atmosphere at the bakery and they enjoy that customers and staff alike have seen their children grow up over the years. However, Loren also acknowledges the importance of creating separate spaces to ensure a healthy balance.
“When my oldest son is in school, my husband and I are able to get work done at the bakery, and generally we can spend time again together in the evening and take care of things around the house,” shares Loren. “Sometimes maintaining this balance means coming in to work in the middle of the night, but it is worth the payoff of not missing out on important milestones.”
Multi-tasking and juggling responsibilities are daily occurrences for Loren. Having a dependable team and solid support system helps ensure everything stays on track even when her attention is pulled in multiple directions. “My husband and I are a great team in terms of keeping our family and business both running smoothly, but we also have an amazing team that we rely on when we have to focus more on our kids,” Loren says. “Recently, our 3-year-old spent a month in the hospital after surgery to remove a brain tumor and we were so grateful to be able to focus on our kids during that hard time without worrying about the business.”
Being a mom and business owner often have more in common than at first glance. Both involve managing different personalities and getting everyone enthusiastically moving in the same direction. Loren says being a mom helps her be a better business owner. “I think I am more patient and empathetic when dealing with my staff than I would be without having children,” she says.
For working mothers, taking time for self-care is crucial to staying well and avoiding burnout. Loren’s stress relief comes in the form of weekly inline hockey nights with her brother, practicing
yoga at a local studio, and spending one-on-one time with her husband. “By having activities that have designated times, I automatically have them in my schedule and generally consider them non-negotiable,” explains Loren. “Luke and I also make an effort to go on dates at least a couple times a month so we can connect with each other separate from the business and kids.”
Drawing on her years of experience, Loren has advice for women entrepreneurs concerning maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “Set yourself up in a way that will allow you to make time for your family, because you will regret it later if you are always working and miss out on their childhood. Maybe that means hiring more staff, maybe it means limiting hours, but you have to make it a priority,” she explains. “If you already are running a business and can't envision how you can manage to start a family and make it work, you just have to go for it and figure it out when you get there. Otherwise, you'll miss your chance.”
Even on the craziest days, Loren says it’s all worth it. “I am extremely grateful to have the ability to provide for my family in a way that also contributes to my community at large.”

care that puts people first
After eighteen years in a traditional medical practice, Dr. Nicole Dorotik noticed a trend in patient care that was not positive. “Efficiency became the priority instead of individualized care,” she explains. “While efficiency makes sense in many industries, I don’t believe it should be the driving force when it comes to your health or the health of your family. That model no longer aligned with how I believe patients should be cared for and it led me to discover the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model.”
The DPC model provides direct access to a physician, longer visits, continuity of care, and a smaller, more personal practice for a basic monthly membership fee. It has all the benefits of concierge medicine without the high cost. The model provides fee transparency and although patients are still encouraged to carry insurance for larger medical emergencies, the practice does not bill insurance. In many instances, pairing DPC with a high-deductible insurance plan can save money, especially when it cuts down on urgent care and emergency room visits.
“With Direct Primary Care, there are no surprises,” says Dr. Dorotik. “Patients know exactly what they’re paying each month, and
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY TANIA PETERMAN
that includes office visits, communication, and many in-office services like strep tests, COVID tests, and EKGs. Whether we see someone once a quarter or once a month, the cost stays the same.”
Flexibility is another trademark of the DPC model. Whereas in traditional practices, patients must see a physician in person regardless of the situation, Dr. Dorotik can address some issues over the phone or using the messaging portal. “In DPC, we meet patients where they are and care for them in the way that best fits their needs,” she shares. “For example, I had a patient who cut their hand and sent us a picture. I asked them to come in right away, we stitched them up, and the entire process took less than an hour. It was simple, convenient, and exactly the kind of care patients deserve.”

Why Dr. Nicole Dorotik decided to do medicine differently
Dr. Nicole Dorotik, MD
Because DPC practices are intentionally small and the model inherently flexible, Dr. Dorotik can allocate more time to getting to know her patients well. This allows her to see the larger health picture, which includes both physical and mental health, and address more than individual symptoms. “In many traditional settings, patients are limited to discussing one issue per visit. But health doesn’t work that way,” explains Dr. Dorotik. “Your knee pain may be affecting your back, which keeps you from exercising, which then impacts your mental health. Everything is connected, and we have the time to address it that way.”

As a family physician, Dr. Dorotik cares for patients of all ages and she greatly enjoys the multi-generational aspect of the practice. Her desire is to provide personalized, attentive care and be a resource for the community. “At the end of the day, we love what we do,” she says. “Practicing medicine this way has been a breath of fresh air. It allows us to truly connect with our patients, spend meaningful time with them, and deliver the kind of care we believe everyone deserves. We truly love what we do and feel so fortunate and blessed every day!”

BECKY HILLYARD
From Side Hustle to Style Empire
The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

Spicy Pineapple Margarita
A delicious cocktail with a kick of jalapeño and bright citrus mix

This Spicy Pineapple Margarita blends together the perfect sweet, spicy, and citrusy notes for a refreshing cocktail with a little heat. Fresh pineapple juice adds natural sweetness while jalapeños bring just enough spice to keep things interesting without overpowering the drink.
INGREDIENTS
(makes 1 cocktail):
• 2 oz blanco tequila
• 1 oz fresh lime juice
• 1.5 oz pineapple juice
• 0.5 oz orange liqueur
• 0.25-0.5 oz agave syrup to taste
• 2-3 slices fresh jalapeño (remove seeds for less heat)
• Ice
• Tajín or salt for rim (optional, but delicious)
• Pineapple wedge and jalapeño slice for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. If desired, rim your glass with lime juice and dip into Tajín or salt. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
2. In a cocktail shaker, add jalapeño slices and gently muddle to release flavor.
3. Add tequila, lime juice, pineapple juice, orange liqueur, and agave syrup.
4. Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.
5. Strain into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
6. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a thin jalapeño slice.
7. For a smoother finish, double strain to remove seeds and pulp. Adjust the spice level by increasing or decreasing the jalapeño slices. Serve immediately and enjoy chilled.
