Great Outdoors Reimagining Your

Completing outdoor projects in phases enables the full transformation to take shape, with plants maturing and getting better over time.
DUKE’S LANDSCAPE COMPANY CREATES NEW AVENUES OF EXPLORATION IN FAMILIAR PLACES
Duke’s Landscape Company offers more than 20 years of award-winning business and green industry experience for contractors and private residences.

For over 20 years, Jon LeDuc, owner of Duke’s Landscape Company in Arvada, has transformed yards into recreational and outdoor living spaces. As an expert in working with clients and creating custom designs, LeDuc recommends a few things for homeowners to consider when it comes to making their vision come to fruition.
First, LeDuc advises homeowners spend time thinking about how they want to experience and use the space, specifically focusing on the desired purpose and function of the area. This step encourages exploring different possibilities and narrowing those options down to what best suits the vision for the function of the space.
“During the discovery process, I walk around with the client, chat with them, and get an idea of what they're thinking, including their goals and objectives,” explained LeDuc. “I get to know their personality and how they want to experience the space because a couple with kids all playing sports is much different than a couple that wants a retreat space.”
Next, LeDuc says homeowners should evaluate the different challenges of using the space, which helps guide design plans to address those issues. Some challenges occur naturally, such as heat due to long exposure to the sun or the presence of too much wind. Other challenges are the result of previous landscaping endeavors, such as elements that require a higher level of maintenance than homeowners want or expect.

The Duke’s team takes pride in creating breathtaking outdoor spaces, tailored to clients’ unique needs.
Owner Jon LeDuc, Duke’s Landscape Company.

“At one home, the owners had a lot going on in the back with a lot of different kinds of materials, timber tie walls, different kinds of rock, and some goofy elevation changes,” he explained. “A big part of what we did was to simplify everything and get a much cleaner look. We did this by not using a bunch of different materials and removing a large, high maintenance water feature that they liked the sound of but not the level of maintenance. We put in a firepit and patio, creating a nice, clean, and very simple space.”
“We also addressed the elevation changes. I'm a big fan of elevation change because it can add interest, but in the wrong way, it can be busy and break the yards into lots of sections,” LeDuc added. “We opened everything up and tried to use the grade as best we could. Now the entire space is usable.”
Once a vision is set and challenges acknowledged, it’s time to choose someone to complete the project.
“Landscape is tricky because there are a lot of businesses out there and it's a little tough to get comparable bids. If we had a plan and gave it to three different companies, you would have three very different products that get installed,” he explained. “So, choose someone who you feel most comfortable with and who you think is going to bring the most value. It's important to do your research on the quality of their work as much as price. We really value the quality of materials and craftsmanship, ensuring our work is able to withstand the elements.”

Hardscape projects blossom visually over time as plants take root and grow.
Owner Jon LeDuc, Duke’s Landscape Company with a client’s finished firepit and backyard sanctuary.
“If it’s your forever home, draw it up how you want it and then keep investing towards that plan.”

LeDuc also recommends completing outdoor transformations in phases. In his experience, trying to accomplish the transformation all at once can lead to cutting corners and even compromising on plan details. “If it’s your forever home, draw it up how you want it and then keep investing towards that plan,” said LeDuc. “I feel like you'll be much happier with the finished product in the long term.”
Lastly, LeDuc wants homeowners to remember that landscaping projects only get better with time.
“Anything we do inside the home, like redoing floors, is at its peak as soon as they are finished,” he said. “What is neat about landscaping is, sure, some of the elements get weathered, but it really takes shape over the years. As designers, we have a lot of intentions, but really, the best projects don't really start coming to life until years after it's installed. It takes time for steppers to get lost in the ground cover and for trees and canopies to grow.”

DRIVE ON UP TO LOCALLY-OWNED

The team at Ted's Express Car Wash in Arvada is ready to serve.
A drive through view at Ted's Express Car Wash.
The team at Ted's Express Car Wash begins with spray.

When Ted Lopez took a leap of faith and decided to venture into the car wash business, he had no idea what adventures he was about to ensue. “I don’t know beans about a car wash,” Ted laughs. “My wife and I were at Freedom Street Social talking to a realtor friend of ours when we discovered there was an opportunity to buy a car wash that hadn’t opened yet. It was all my wife Lila’s idea,” says Ted.
Shortly after that encounter, Ted’s Express Car Wash came to life in November of 2023. A longtime entrepreneur, “I told myself that I would never do another business that I didn’t know something about,” laughs Ted “And here I am with a car wash.”

Customers can purchase memberships and car wash packages.
Those two-and-a-half minutes of driving through a car wash may seem pretty routine to most people, but to Ted every ride through is an opportunity to engage with people in the community and ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction. “When you go through a car wash, you just ride through. It’s a long tunnel, you pop out and it’s like oh that was great. Bunch of water, high pressure and some suds,” he says.
In reality, running a car wash is much more advanced than just soap and water. “It’s actually pretty complex,” explains Ted. “There are different levels of chemicals and additives and a fairly sophisticated programming system that is used to wash cars. Every inch of the tunnel has a different impact on the quality of a car wash.” And it’s entertainment for that short ride, too.
“We’ve got colored lights and we make it a little bit of a show,” says Ted.
Ted wants his customers to leave happy because they’re also his neighbors. “I care about every car that comes out. We are always looking at the cars to make sure they look clean. You can usually find me either in the tunnel or out talking to people, getting their feedback.”
When customers visit Ted’s Express Car Wash, they are not only greeted by the whir of machinery but also by Ted’s signature look. “I’ve worn a cowboy hat for 90% of my life” explains Ted. “I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere and I have a lot of cowboy hats that I wear all the time. Sometimes people will see me in the grocery store or out having lunch and say to me ‘You’re Ted, aren’t you?’ It’s been funny getting recognized.”
The team strives to provide the very best customer service.

Ted’s Express Car Wash is located at 9158 Kendrick Street in Arvada.

In addition to keeping the cars in town clean, owning the car wash has also given Ted and his family a further developed sense of community. “It’s been really cool to get to know so many people— nice people” he says. “The best part is being able to provide such a good service to those people and it’s something that we’re really proud of.”

Duo Brings New Fitness Center
Location to the Neighborhood
Exciting news for fitness enthusiasts in West Arvada, Colorado. Orangetheory Fitness opened a brand new studio in June at 14701 W. 65th Way, bringing its renowned workout experience to the neighborhood.
Locally owned and operated by the dynamic duo of Julie and Shawn Johnson, this new location marks another milestone in their decade-long journey of promoting health and wellness in Colorado. The Johnsons have been at the forefront of the Orangetheory Fitness movement in Colorado for the past 10 years. Their dedication and passion for fitness have transformed the lives of countless individuals, fostering a strong sense of community and support.
“Our newest studio in West Arvada promises to be no different, offering a space where you can achieve your fitness goals while feeling a part of something bigger,” said Shawn, who explained that Orangetheory Fitness offers more than a workout routine. “Our members inspire and uplift each other, creating a positive environment that encourages personal
growth and collective achievement. We believe in the power of community and individual progress, and we are dedicated to helping you reach your fitness goals.”
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness journey, the team of dedicated coaches and supportive members are there to help every step of the way. Orangetheory is based on the five heart rate training zones. Unlike high-intensity interval training, you adjust your level of effort during the workout based on what your heart is telling you. The goal is to spend 12-to-20 minutes with your heart rate elevated in the “Orange Zone” to boost metabolism, burn fat and burn more calories. And, a portion of workout classes focus on functional strength and resistance training, too.
Orangetheory Fitness is more than just a place to workout. “Our unique approach combines science, coaching, and technology to guarantee maximum results from the inside out. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to building a supportive and motivating community.”

“ We believe in the power of community and individual progress. We are dedicated to helping you reach your fitness goals.”

Shish Kabob for Summer
Shish kabob is synonymous with summer. It’s fun to cook, delicious and versatile. Whether you are a carnivore, omnivore or vegetarian, the dish allows you to use your imagination. It’s up to you what add onto your skewers (the “shish”).
Whether you use lamb, chicken, beef, fish, shrimp, or vegetables, (the “kabob’”), you’ll please any palate. Soak the bamboo skewers before grilling; marinate the ingredients for at least 30 minutes: the longer the better.
Marinades
Soy/Worcestershire/Garlic (Good for beef, lamb, mushrooms or vegetables):
INGREDIENTS
• ½ cup soy sauce
• 1/3 cup vegetable oil
• ¼ cup lemon juice
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 tablespoon prepared mustard
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
• 1 teaspoon coarsely cracked black pepper
DIRECTIONS
Whisk soy sauce, vegetable oil, lemon juice, garlic, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper in a bowl; pour into a resealable plastic bag. Add meat cubes and squeeze out excess air; seal the bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight. Add mushrooms to the bag; squeeze out excess air and reseal the bag. Marinate again for another 8 hours. Preheat the grill to medium-high. Skewer ingredients. Grill until the meat is cooked. Serve kabobs while warm.
Dijon Lemon
(Good for chicken, seafood or vegetables)
INGREDIENTS
• ½ cup Dijon mustard
• 2 lemons, zest and juice
• 2 tablespoons honey
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• Thin lemon slices
DIRECTIONS
Whisk mustard, lemon zest and juice, honey, olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper in a medium-sized bowl. Add meat and let marinate for at least 30 minutes. Preheat the grill to medium-high. Skewer chicken, adding a thin lemon slice between every other piece. Grill the chicken for 5-6 minutes per side until the thickest parts of the kabob are cooked through. Serve kabobs while warm.

WHAT’S NEW: EXPLORING THE GAYLORD ROCKIES’ EXTRAORDINARY REVAMP
A Beacon of Grandeur

ARTICLE BY ANDI LAWLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GAYLORD ROCKIES RESORT
The verdict is in: Gaylord Rockies Resort is
the ultimate destination for an unforgettable Colorado getaway.
Nestled against the majestic backdrop of the Rocky Mountains, the Gaylord Rockies Resort has always been a beacon of grandeur, but their recent unveiling of Embers Lodge Bar and new English Pub, The Fortunate Prospector, has us curious to explore the resort’s newest upgrades:
MORNING ARRIVAL:
AN OASIS NEAR THE AIRPORT
After touching down at Denver International Airport, it's a short 15-minute drive to the sprawling haven of Gaylord Rockies Resort. As you step into the updated Grand Lodge, you're met with panoramic mountain views, dining options galore, a full-service spa and aquatic paradise at Arapahoe Springs Water Park. And don't worry about a stiff check-in process; the staff are friendly and welcoming, ensuring your stay starts off on the right foot.
AFTERNOON ESCAPE: THE FORTUNATE PROSPECTOR
As the day progresses, (and stomach’s start to rumble) the resort’s new English Pub, The Fortunate Prospector, is eager to please. With its rich woodwork and Victorian charm, the dining outlet feels like a cozy nook transported from another era. The story of Earl, the dapper bighorn sheep, and fictional proprietor, adds a whimsical touch. Savoring traditional Fish & Chips and a Pimm's Cup cocktail, the pub’s ambiance blending Colorado mining history and English elegance makes for an enchanting dining experience.
EVENING ELEGANCE: EMBERS LODGE BAR
Gaylord Rockies has made happy hour easy with Embers Lodge Bar—the heart of the resort. Its 360-degree wrap around bar is a real showstopper, with warm flame red and tawny gold hues. Find a comfortable spot by
one of the grand fireplaces while perusing the menu. The Ziggy Stardust cocktail—a mix of vodka, custom spices, and a flamed cinnamon pour-over—is a standout, and this bold drink perfectly matches the bar's lively vibe. Pair it with oysters and barbacoa sliders and your tastebuds will thank you later.
FUTURE PROMISES: CONTINUED ENHANCEMENTS
In discussions with Suzy Hart, the resort's general manager, it's revealed that enhancements will continue into 2024. Expect new dining experiences at Garden + Grain and Copper Table, along with a revamped Old Hickory Steakhouse and the introduction of a new 9,000 square foot event space, Mountain View Pavilion.
EVERYTHING & MORE
A day dedicated only to exploring the new additions could not cover all the resort has to offer. Luxurious rooms with stunning mountain views await, along with nine dining options ranging from Mountain Pass Sports Bar with a 75-foot flat screen TV to a refined Old Hickory Steakhouse experience. Dive into fun at Arapahoe Springs Water Park, where you can zip down waterslides or float along the lazy river. Join in on special activities on expansive lawns and outdoor spaces, or pamper yourself at the award-winning Relâche Spa and state-of-the-art fitness center.
The verdict is in: Gaylord Rockies Resort is the ultimate destination for an unforgettable Colorado getaway. From diverse dining experiences to exciting entertainment options and luxurious spa treatments, you’re in for a good time. Plus, if you’re a Colorado local, here’s an insider tip: Colorado residents can take advantage of up to 20% off their stay, including free self-parking, by using code "L9Z."
