Our Four-legged Friends
Dear Friends,
Life with pets is a joyful journey filled with laughter, love, and learning. Our days are brimming with the playful antics of our furry friends. From muddy paw prints on the floor to endless games of fetch in the backyard, our home is a bustling hub of activity and affection. Having pets teaches us invaluable lessons about responsibility, empathy, and unconditional love. It’s a daily reminder to cherish the simple pleasures and embrace the chaos that comes with nurturing these precious souls. Whether we’re exploring nature trails with our dog or enjoying quiet moments together at home, every moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories and strengthen our bonds.
We warmly invite you to our special Mother and Son Dance on August 22nd, starting at 5:30pm. This event is dedicated to fostering and deepening the bond between mothers and sons. Let’s celebrate family, friendship, and the joys of parenthood together!
Warm regards,
August 2024

Denver-Arvada Opens Hounds Town West
A NEW PLAY AND STAY OPTION FOR YOUR POOCH
The McNaughton family at their newly opened Hounds Town of West Denver-Arvada.
Hounds Town of West Denver-Arvada offers a fun and welcoming place for pets to enjoy time away from home. The interactive doggy day care, boarding for cats and dogs, full spa, and a pet taxi service provide all the components to keep pets and their parents happy. Owner Chris McNaughton, who has extensive experience in revitalizing businesses in the restaurant business, says hanging out with dogs is a refreshing change from his previous work.
“I’m spending the day with dogs and really, nothing could be better than that,” he said. “I see dogs get very excited to come play with friends, socialize, and have fun. That’s what we’re all about here ... everything we do, we do for the dogs.”
For the interactive day care, dogs are placed in packs by grouping them based on size and temperament not discriminating due to breed or disabilities. The staff also works with dogs who show separation anxiety of shyness.
“We allow a natural pack to form. As I often say, it's not our idea, it's Mother Nature's idea and we just allow it to happen,” explained McNaughton. “But we also know that a 65-pound puppy and a 65-pound older dog don’t want to be in the same environment. So, we work with the dogs and make sure that we're placing them based on their temperament so they can play all day.”
Play areas are equipped with different fun items such as obstacle courses, tunnels, and play sets to keep dogs entertained. The facility currently houses five indoor play areas with the process underway to add outdoor play areas. Although pet attendants monitor the packs, they minimize contact that focuses on specific dogs to reduce jealous behavior or possessiveness.

Hounds Town of West Denver-Arvada offers a fun and welcoming place for pets.
Boarding pets participate in the fun interactions of day care and then enjoy comfortable and homey overnight accommodations. Boarding options for dogs include three sizes: townhouses, luxury suites, and king suites, which have room for family groups. “It like they are going into a hotel,” he said. “We wash all of their bedding every single morning, and we even put treats on their bed at night like you would find chocolates at your hotel.”
Cats stay separated from dogs in multi-level condos which are located close to the front office for a nice, calm visit. If desired, several condos can be connected to allow the cats a larger palace space to enjoy.
The full-service pet spa offers regular baths, which include shampooing and conditioning, and deluxe baths that include deshedding, shampooing, conditioning, brush out, and blow dry. Additional spa treatments include nail clipping, teeth brushing, and a luxurious blueberry facial pets and owners love.
“Dogs play with their mouths and paws around the necks and heads of other dogs and they can get a little dirty and smelly,” he said. “So, they enjoy a good spa day with a deluxe bath and then a blueberry facial where we massage their face a little bit. Most importantly, when the parents get here to pick them up, their pup smells like a blueberry.”
Hounds Town also recently added a pet taxi service for added convenience to pet owners who may have busy schedules or unconventional hours.

“We have a lot of nurses and people who have to go into work early, and although we open at 6:30am to try and help those people, some of them have to go in at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning,” he said. “So, we will go within a 15-mile radius, pick up your dog, and drop off your dog for you.”
Pets enjoy their time at Hounds Town so much that they often have what McNaughton refers to as a “Hounds Town Hangover” afterwards. “Our fully interactive daycare is designed to be challenging, both physically and mentally, for the dogs. So don't be alarmed that your dog goes home, is tired, wants to fall asleep for hours,” he shared. “They're not sick, they're just worn out from that full day of play.”

Owning a dog is an enriching experience, bringing joy and companionship. Understanding your pet’s needs ensures a happy, healthy life; more importantly, understanding your family's readiness will do that too. Each breed has unique traits and needs; adding a “fur baby” is a tailored experience. Popular breeds include Golden Doodles, German Shepherds, French Bulldogs, and Corgis. Knowing how to nurture and care for any four-legged friend is essential, no matter your choice.
CHOOSING AND KEEPING A NEW DOG HAPPY AND HEALTHY
Golden Doodles: The Perfect Family Companion
“UNDERSTANDING YOUR PET’S NEEDS ENSURES
A HAPPY, HEALTHY LIFE; MORE IMPORTANTLY, UNDERSTANDING YOUR
FAMILY’S READINESS WILL DO THAT
TOO.”
GOLDEN DOODLES: THE PERFECT FAMILY COMPANION
Golden Doodles, a mix of Golden Retrievers and Poodles, are ideal family pets. Friendly and intelligent, they are great with kids and other pets. With a lifespan of 10-15 years, they create many happy memories. Puppies cost $1,500 to $3,000, with ongoing expenses for food, vet visits and grooming their low-shedding coats need regular grooming. Energetic and requiring daily exercise, they thrive on love and attention. They make lovable, loyal, and friendly companions adaptable to various lifestyles.
GERMAN SHEPHERDS: THE LOYAL FAMILY GUARDIAN
German Shepherds are renowned for their loyalty, intelligence, and versatility, making them exceptional family pets and protectors. With a lifespan of 9-13 years, they offer a deep bond and enduring companionship. Investing in a German Shepherd involves an initial cost of $1,000 to $2,500 for a puppy. Ongoing expenses include high-quality food, grooming, training, and regular veterinary care. Their double coats shed year-round and require weekly brushing to manage. Health care is vital: They are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and other genetic conditions. Regular vet check-ups, vaccinations and preventative care are essential to maintain their health. German Shepherds are highly active and need ample exercise. Daily walks, playtime and mental stimulation through training or puzzle toys are necessary to keep them happy and healthy. Their intelligence makes them quick learners, excelling in obedience and advanced training, which also helps curb any behavioral issues. They are affectionate and protective, thriving on family interaction and companionship.
CORGIS:
THE ADORABLE FAMILY FRIEND
With their short legs and big personalities, Corgis make wonderful family pets. With a lifespan of 12-15 years, they bring long-term joy and companionship. Corgi puppies cost between $1,000 and $2,000. Regular expenses include food, grooming, and vet visits. Their double coats require

regular brushing to manage shedding. Vet care is essential for Corgis, as they can be prone to hip dysplasia and back issues. Routine checkups and vaccinations are necessary. Corgis are intelligent and energetic, needing daily exercise like walks and playtime to stay happy and healthy. They thrive on attention and enjoy being part of family activities. Their adaptable nature suits various living situations, from apartments to houses. If you’re looking for a playful, loyal, and affectionate pet, a Corgi is a great choice for your family.
FRENCH BULLDOGS:
THE LOVABLE FAMILY COMPANION
French Bulldogs, affectionately known as Frenchies, are small, charming dogs perfect for families. With a lifespan of 10-12 years, they offer many years of joy and companionship, with puppies costing between $1,500 and $3,000. Ongoing expenses include food, grooming, and regular vet visits. Their short coats are low-maintenance, but they need regular cleaning of their facial folds. Vet care is crucial for Frenchies due to potential health issues like breathing problems and hip dysplasia. Regular check-ups and vaccinations are a must. Frenchies are affectionate and love attention. They’re low-energy dogs but need daily walks and playtime. They are friendly and adaptable with a loyal, loving, and easygoing disposition.
SIBERIAN HUSKIES:
THE ENERGETIC FAMILY COMPANION
Siberian Huskies, celebrated for their striking looks and adventurous spirit, make wonderful family pets. Friendly and intelligent, they get along great with kids and other pets. With a lifespan of 12-14 years, they offer many years of companionship and fun. Puppies typically cost between $1,000 and $2,500, with ongoing expenses for food, grooming, and vet visits. Their thick double coats require regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons. Huskies are high-energy dogs that need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Daily walks, playtime, and activities like running or hiking are essential to keep them happy and healthy. They thrive in active households where they receive lots of attention and interaction. Siberian Huskies are known for their strong pack instincts and enjoy being part of family activities.

DOG
SOCIALIZING
“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99% working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
