Olde Town Arvada’s Rheinlander Bakery, located at 5712 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, donated $1,600 to Bake Out Hunger, an annual effort. The Rheinlander team raises awareness for the non-profit’s Feeding the Future program throughout September, collecting donations and creating a special line up of cupcakes, where $1 from each sale is donated as well. How do you take thousands of years of traditional medicine and incorporate it with modern medical technology? Dr. Jana Royer-Morian and the team at Inspired Wellness Center do just that every day. “I believe our unique approach is beneficial to patients because we do a great job at translating a very old medical model into a modern, research-informed, understandable medicine,” shares Jana. “We can be very effective at helping people with complex medical conditions because of how traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) looks at the body.” The practice of acupuncture may seem mysterious to some, but the method is used effectively worldwide. “At a patient’s first visit, I will often explain that the World Health Organization (WHO) has proven acupuncture to be effective in treating, or helping manage, over four hundred different medical conditions,” says Jana. “It’s very effective for things like pain, headaches/migraines, stress and other mood disorders, gastrointestinal issues, and more.” “We have found a sweet spot of having a very balanced approach with practicing Chinese medicine but delivering it in a way that feels comfortable to people who have only been exposed to Western medicine,” she adds. “We see a lot of medical professionals, first responders, and military which I believe is because they feel comfortable with somebody who is very science-based in our approach.”

An important aspect of the profession includes a solid educational background. “To practice we must have an undergraduate degree in a science and then complete a four-year master’s degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine,” explains Jana. “Both Candace Canerdy and I have the same education: a four-year undergraduate degree in pre-med/science, a three-to-four-year master’s degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and a two-year post-graduate degree in a doctor of acupuncture and integrative health program.” “By understanding many of the disease processes in the body that contribute to major health concerns, we can try to address issues when they are small so they don’t continue to fester into larger, more concerning problems,” she adds. “We also know the limitations of what we can treat and know when to refer out when necessary.” At Inspired Wellness Center, they work with patients who experience pain and sports injuries in addition to addressing general wellness issues such as reducing stress, improving sleep, and ensuring the immune system is functioning properly. Their specialty, however, falls in the areas of fertility and working with cancer patients. According to Jana, in the areas of fertility and oncology the benefits of acupuncture can be life-changing. “I have spent quite some time at two of the major cancer hospitals in the country, MD Anderson in Houston and Sloan-Kettering in NYC, as they both have huge integrative

medicine programs,” she explains. “In cancer treatment, it is important to remember that acupuncture is a supportive role, and not a primary treatment method. Our goals are to offset symptoms of traditional cancer treatments so patients can stay healthy enough to both stay on their prescribed treatment plan and have a decent quality of life during treatment. We help manage things like pain, nausea and gastrointestinal disturbance, blood counts, depression and anxiety, neuropathy and more. If symptoms are well managed during treatment, then generally recovery after treatment is much easier.” “In fertility medicine, I meet people in all different stages of the journey from those thinking of getting pregnant to those who are all in with IVF and other artificial reproductive methods,” says Jana. “Many of the women I work with conceive naturally as acupuncture can help correct irregular cycles, regulate hormones, and help address structural disorders like blood flow issues and endometriosis. Acupuncture is also super effective in helping women manage stress levels which is useful in the fertility journey as it is a hugely stressful time for many couples. Stress can impact everything from cycles to inflammation, so stress is always a part of our treatment plan.” A special place in the office hosts pictures of babies conceived with the help of acupuncture treatments. A large part of the charm of Inspired Wellness Center is the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. “We are casual and

we treat those who come in as friends,” shares Jana. “Our team is special in the way we really like each other and I think it shows. We strive to have fun in the office and I think people enjoy our sense of humor. We take what we do seriously but never ourselves.” The staff ensures quality service by taking a well-rounded approach to patient care. “We all have our roles and the things we do best,” says Jana. “Stephanie, our office manager, makes things look professional and beautiful. She is the gatekeeper to everything and runs a pretty tight ship. She is the reason we look good. Dr. Candace has been with us for a year and is originally from Memphis, Tennessee. She brings some Southern charm, a huge smile, and the best laugh. She brings back some of the “traditional” in TCM. She has a love for herbs and nutrition that really benefits our patients, and as a newer provider she is eager to tackle everything and help all of those who enter our office.” One of the many things Jana enjoys about her work is developing relationships with her patients. “I love meeting new people and getting to know not only their health goals but also learning about their family, their history, their wins and hearing their stories,” she says. “I love seeing an acupuncture skeptic turn into a long-time patient. I love that people trust us with their very best days, “I’m pregnant. My cancer is in remission. My chronic pain is gone,” and their very worst days [cancer reoccurrence, pregnancy loss, other major health diagnoses]. The good days are great and the bad days are soul crushing but I wouldn’t change it for anything.”

Most of us have heard of intravenous therapy. Whether you are a wellness junkie or just an avid “Grey’s Anatomy” fan, vitamin treatments have been exploding in popularity—for good reason. We spoke with Kevin and Nicole Poel, owners of the newly-opened Hydrate IV Bar in Westminster, to explore IV therapy, how their medical expertise led them to this business venture and the ways they are pioneering wellness locally.

WHAT IS IV THERAPY AND ITS MAIN BENEFITS?

Kevin Poel: The main benefits are long term health and wellness. In Colorado's active environment, oral supplements, while good, have limitations in absorption. IV therapy provides deeper absorption and addresses baseline dehydration which is prevalent in high-altitude areas. There are people who live here and are chronically dehydrated without knowing it because their bodies build an ability to compensate. Many individuals who fly into Colorado experience altitude sickness, which a simple IV bag can alleviate. In addition to this, we add in the vitamin aspect. Your body will receive the hydration it needs as well as a combination of Vitamins B, C and Zinc to help bulk up your immune system. Nicole Poel: Hydrating before, during, and after a flight is crucial, yet often overlooked. Hydration touches every area of our lives. Nicole Poel: NAD+ is basically Vitamin B3 broken down into its most usable form. It rapidly generates energy in your cells and aids tremendously with inflammation and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Kevin actually met a woman who was experiencing a lot of pain and had nearly given up after several surgeries who said the NAD+ treatments were life-changing. Kevin Poel: She did a series of 10 infusions of NAD+. After her first treatment, she was able to get out of bed pain-free. These are the kinds of testimonies that we love to hear. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO ENTER THIS BUSINESS?

Nicole Poel: Unfortunately, most of us don’t eat the healthiest diet so we are not getting all the appropriate nutrients that our body needs. Only a small percentage of oral supplements are bioavailable after they go through your digestive system. With IV vitamin therapy and injections, those nutrients are 100% bio-available. Kevin Poel: My background is in pediatric emergency medicine. I still practice in pharmacy now. We were looking for something of our own that would fit perfectly with our combined skill sets and passions while also contributing to our community.

HOW LONG DOES AN IV THERAPY SESSION LAST?

Nicole Poel: We aim for a spa-like experience. We want you to come here and feel good about what you are doing for your body but also have a soothing experience for your mind. It can take 45 minutes to an hour for an IV bag and as quick as 5 minutes for a vitamin injection. NAD+ typically requires 2 to 4 hours since we prefer to run this infusion slower for tolerability.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Kevin Poel: We are overseen by a medical director who approves all of our protocols, in addition to myself and Nicole who are actively in the medical field. In terms of side effects, NAD+ can have some harmless transient infusion related reactions. Nicole Poel: The reasons those side effects occur are because the infusions are directly impacting the areas of inflammation which is actually beneficial. Your body may experience some discomfort so for this reason we run NAD+ slower and typically ask our patients to eat a high protein meal beforehand.

“Our bodies are wonderfully made,” shares Dr. Jim Roles of Five Parks Chiropractic in Arvada. “If we take care of what we've been given, we can expect to live a long, prosperous, and healthy life.” Chiropractic care, which began in the late 1800s, is rooted in neurological

mechanism, puts the body in protection mode. The parasympathetic nervous system allows the body to grow and heal. “The fight or flight only does one good thing … it protects us,” says Dr. Roles. “In every other area, it hurts us – in our cognitive abilities, digestion,

science. “The first individual treated was deaf and his hearing was restored,” explains Dr. Roles. “My job is to help restore neurological function which is almost always brought on by some physical trauma. This could be from birth or accidents involving autos, bicycles, swing sets … you name it.” This trauma causes a subluxation, a term used to describe the spine negatively influencing the nervous system due to misalignment. Ensuring proper alignment allows the nervous system to restore the body’s natural healing process, which improves sleep and energy, reduces pain, and promotes increased cognitive function. Dr. Roles said the body’s nervous system functions in one of two states: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sympathetic nervous system, often known to control our “fight or flight”

ability to sleep, etc. Using chiropractic care, we can help reduce that buildup ... allowing the body to live in a state of growth and healing rather than in protection mode.” For children to have optimal growth and development, it is important to keep these systems in balance. “Children with anxiety, ODD, ADHD, and even autism spectrum disorders are living in a constant state of fight or flight,” explains Dr. Roles. “So every decision, emotion, sensation, touch, noise, and visual is very exaggerated. If we can find a way to get these children back into a dominant parasympathetic lifestyle, then we won't need to medicate them.” “In addition to helping neuro-atypical kids, I help moms who are pregnant – even those who are healthy with no pain – to have the best birth possible

so their children don't have to recover from birth trauma,” he adds. Using the Webster technique, Dr. Roles ensures the most favorable environment for baby’s growth and development plus physical alignment to decrease trauma at birth. “If we can get mom's nervous system healthy for hormone and blood development, growth, and calm while getting the pelvis ready for delivery, we minimize potential negative stress on the baby's nervous system.” Babies often exhibit signs of a stressed nervous system early. The symptoms present as a fussy or colicky baby or with difficulty latching/eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom. Dr. Roles helps babies as young as newborns. “When I’m working with an infant, the work is very, very gentle,” he says. “We make sure they don’t feel any discomfort.” The team enjoys working with people of all ages. Dr. Roles and his team strive to be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to keeping patients healthy. “We help people who are healthy and have good nutrition and exercise habits, but want to extend the quality and the length of their life as well,” says Dr. Roles, “and we do all that through functional neurology.”

With a team of instructors who have each dedicated over three years to mastering the art of barre, the emphasis is on safety and customization.
