Home: there's so much contained in that little, four-letter word. Home is our grounding, our base, and our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day, and while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we think about what home means to all of us, we want to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That includes the food and drinks, aesthetic and design, but most importantly, it includes the people. This month we had the chance to learn what several local businesses do to help people enjoy their homes to the fullest. Founder Nancy Ferro has stepped down as director but will remain involved with the day to day operations with Epic Experience’s mission of empowering adult cancer survivors to live beyond cancer.

Good bones are important in any home. They are just as important to the heart of Urban Exteriors’ business. Jennifer and John Hess, the husband-and-wife duo at the core of the company, are proving that traditional, honest values will never go out of style. “We like to do business the old-fashioned way. If we say we're going to do something, we do it,” John says. Jennifer and John met over 20 years ago while at the first roofing company where they both worked. The company is family-run, and they treat every client and member of their team as part of that family. “One of our guys is having shoulder surgery, and we’re already trying to figure out how to get him dinner and send him flowers,” Jennifer says. Their dedication to quality and good, old-fashioned values has inspired a sense of loyalty and care among the entire Urban Exteriors family, allowing them to maintain the same roofing, deck, and siding crews for nearly a decade. Urban Exteriors extends that same care to the entire Front Range community and beyond through work with both global and local non-profit organizations. “We love our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. We've donated

goods and services to them for about three years now,” John says. They also work with Denver-based Brothers Redevelopment, a non-profit committed to providing accessible housing to the local low-income, elderly, and disabled communities. John and Jennifer have a very personal connection to one of the organizations they work with regularly. Having a son with Type 1 Diabetes, they are committed to donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and The Children's Diabetes Foundation is yet another local non-profit in which they are involved. To Urban Exteriors, getting to make lives a little bit better is the best part of the business. “You can see how it touches homeowners where sometimes they'll get their most important thing done, that insurance claim, and end up with enough money to buy groceries for the month at the end of it, too. 5 Hot Trends

in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen. CONTINUED >

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Creativity is at the heart of every build Tim Newberg does. The owner of Sun and Soul Homes has been working in the design and construction fields for more than 30 years and started the Arvada business three years ago. “I’ve always had an interest in artistic endeavors,” says Tim. “I went to school for art and design, and I’ve been inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.” One of Tim’s grandfathers ran a painting business, and another grandfather had one of the first carpet and flooring companies in Milwaukee, WI. Tim worked with and learned from both of them. Tim also spent time designing custom, wooden signs in Boulder, many of which are still on display. Sun and Soul Homes does high-quality interior and exterior design work from big jobs to small budget room remodeling projects. They specialize in uniquely designed decks. The company does full interior remodeling, including bathrooms and kitchens and not just in homes. They just finished remodeling a few hospitals in Greeley. The Arvada company’s interior designer, Carrie Deckinger, was the top designer for IKEA Germany for 4 years. With an extensive list of subcontractors including engineers, architects, plumbers, and electricians, Sun and Soul can handle just about any size job. Most of Sun and Soul’s customers doing deck projects prefer composite options, because they're largely maintenance free. The cost of composite materials has come down considerably in recent years, while the price of wood has skyrocketed. Sun and Soul is a family-run business. Tim’s son, Leif Newberg, is 39 and has his degree in art. The two youngest kids in the family are Bianka (7) and Nadia (11). “I think people would be surprised how much I can do with a small budget,” says Tim. “If you're creative and work

with interesting colors and materials, it makes a huge difference.” Tim’s wife, Ula Sztukiel, is a wizard at refinishing. Sun and Soul can often refurbish things like cabinets, bringing a new look to pieces already in your home. Tim also uses technology to bring projects to life for clients. “I’ll come out with a drone, take an aerial shot of the house, and superimpose what a deck will look like when we’re done.” Longevity is an important thing to consider. What works for a family now might not work in a few years. Tim says they like to keep things modular, so as a family grows and changes, a deck or other space can change with the styles of the time and people’s interests. “We love working with people's personal interests and bringing our creative style and ideas into it.” In a new and exciting effort, Sun and Soul Homes is developing vacation homes in Costa Rica. “The homes are being built with the latest composite materials and steel to stand up to things like harsh weather, insects, and earthquakes,” says Tim. They’re modular and go up quickly. The business can have a new vacation home move-in ready within a few months for approximately $400,000. They’re offering a 25% discount till the end of March, which lowers the cost per home to $300,000 for buyers who contact them about the vacation homes in Costa Rica. You must contact the company by the end of March and mention Arvada Lifestyle to be eligible. “The subdivision, Mar Vista, is about 15 minutes north of Tamarindo, and it has incredible views. It would remind you of Malibu in the 60s," says Tim. The lots are sold separately but in conjunction with the vacation homes. He says owners can rent out the homes through Airbnb or Vrbo and easily cover the mortgage.

“I love my job right now.” That’s how owner Mike Jaramillo started our conversation for this article, and I could feel that sentiment in everything he said about AMK Hardscapes. “I love the guys I have surrounding me. We have the right people in the right places, and the business is right where I want it to be.” AMK Hardscapes on Harlan Street in Arvada has established itself as a strong brand in Colorado. The company is a Certified Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Installer. ICPI is the leading resource for education and training for segmental pavement contractors. The process AMK Hardscapes uses results in a finished product that doesn’t face the same cracking, chipping, and fading challenges as many other materials. passed away. “I decided to keep the plan going and make it happen.” Mike’s commitment shows in the company’s success and dedication to quality. They offer a 10 year warranty, and some products have a lifetime warranty. “As an ICPI certified business, we’re held to a high standard and guidelines for this climate,” he says. “The installation process is just different here in Colorado because of the changing temperatures and movement during the freezing months.” For Mike, it’s about relationships. “Seeing our clients happy is so awesome! Mike personally makes an appearance at every job site. “It’s a closeknit family operation. Our crews treat your home like it was the business owner’s house.” “There really isn’t any piece of our work I haven’t personally done, so every once in a while I’ll jump in. SCALLOPED POTATOES A creamy & buttery side or main dish ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON

Nothing says comfort food like old-fashioned scalloped potatoes with a creamy sauce and rich, buttery texture. Scalloped potatoes are just thinly sliced red or yellow potatoes, with or without the skin, in a rich cream sauce and baked in the oven until golden brown and delicious. It's a warm, inviting dish that can be served as a main course or as a side, and it pairs well with pork, beef, or chicken.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • •

¼ cup butter 1 large onion diced 2 cloves of garlic minced ¼ cup flour 2 cups milk ½ teaspoon salt 1/4 cup diced scallions

• 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth • ¼ teaspoon pepper • 3 pounds white potatoes sliced about ⅛ inch thick • salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350˚F. To make the sauce, melt the butter, and cook the garlic and diced onions over medium-low heat until the onions are softened. Add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Combine milk and broth. Add a small amount at a time whisking to thicken. The mixture will become very thick. Continue adding a little bit of liquid at a time whisking until smooth. Once all of the liquid has been added, bring to a boil over medium heat while continuing to whisk the mixture. Stir in salt and pepper, and let it boil for 1 minute.

ASSEMBLY: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Place 1/3 of the potatoes in the bottom, and season with salt and pepper. Pour 1/3 of the cream sauce over top. Repeat layers ending with the cream sauce. Cover and bake for 45 minutes. Sprinkle the diced green

scallions over the top of the baking dish. Uncover and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender. Broil for 3-4 minutes to obtain a golden, caramelized top. Allow the dish to rest for 15 minutes before serving.

OPTIONAL IDEAS: Bacon: pre-cook and crumble bacon. Sprinkle over the top of the dish before the final baking period to add an extra layer of flavor. Feta Cheese: after the first 45 minutes baking, sprinkle feta or goat cheese over the top of the dish and continue to bake for the last 35-45 minutes until golden brown. Sriracha Chili Sauce: if you like things spicy, add a teaspoon of hot chili sauce to the mixture before pouring it over the sliced potatoes, bringing up the heat and giving the recipe a kick.
