As summer winds down, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring will be exchanged for busier school and sport schedules. It seems like the summer months never last quite as long as we would like, but there is still time to enjoy the simple pleasures of warmer days. We're dedicating our August issue to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and of touching our hearts. Our pets' loyalty is so inspiring, and a child's sense of wonder can be so refreshing. In this edition, we are highlighting fun and exciting programs and services for kids in our community, as well as animals with important jobs helping people improve their health. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with our kids and fur-babies. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time doing some of the warm-weather activities you enjoy the most with the ones you love. Enjoy!

Clementine's Salon celebrated its grand opening on July 11 in Olde Town Arvada. The event featured live music, cocktails by Marmalade Lounge, gift bags, raffle prizes, and appetizers. The location at 5665 Olde Wadsworth Boulevard features high-end salon and skincare services. Clementine’s, which has three locations--Denver, Aurora, and Arvada, has twice been recognized by ELLE Magazine as one of the top salons in the nation.
Restore Hyper Wellness opened its newest location in Wheat Ridge July 7-10. Owned and operated by Golden residents Shawn and Julie Johnson, Restore is located at 3350 Youngfield Street. The 2,500 square-foot studio will employ a variety of full and parttime workers, including wellness representatives, estheticians, and registered nurses under the oversight of independent physicians. Restore helps people manage persistent pain, defy the signs of aging, boost athletic performance, and dial up natural defenses.
LUKI Brewery is celebrating two years in business. The family-run brewery has a theme inspired by their descendants' rich history of circus work in the big-top glory days. Founder, Jeff Smith, says opening the business in the middle of the pandemic was a challenge, but the community embraced the brewery. They've been growing steadily over the last two years. A multi-generational vacation with fun for everyone 18

When planning our spring multi-generational getaway, we looked at reasonably priced destinations that were reachable in less than a couple of hours. Our ideal location needed to address the diverse interests of an adventuresome couple and a family with a baby and a preschooler. We also had to consider our desire to remain active while eating a nutrient-dense diet. Finding mutually agreeable dates also needed to coincide with a hotel’s availability. After raising four sons, we realized that families traveling with small children should have realistic expectations since nap schedules and mealtimes rarely jive with rigid adult schedules. Sightseeing trips in cities and road trips to U.S. National Parks were not feasible. Our options focused on full-service resorts with nearby outdoor activities. To help narrow down our choices, we looked for online packages that included airfare, rental cars, upgraded accommodations, and resort credit. The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, outside Phoenix, Arizona, became our top choice. Our spacious deluxe casitas were conveniently located on the resort property. We easily walked to the spa, the pool area, and the on-site restaurants where locally grown and seasonal ingredients dominated the menus. The meticulously landscaped grounds complimented the surrounding Sonoran Desert terrain. Our family experienced a sense of calm and relaxation in this transformative desert environment. Using the resort as home base, each family unit was able to pursue their own interests while also finding time to relax at the resort’s pool complex. We also coordinated schedules so we could eat together at least once a day. Flexibility became the key. Our youngest son, Jordan, and his wife, Kayla, had the most flexibility, so they took advantage of many of the resort’s amenities. With yoga classes, pickleball, and the spa facility, they remained active almost every minute of the day. Their schedule also included an early morning hike up Camelback Mountain. They took the Echo Canyon trail, with an elevation gain of about 1,400 feet in just over a mile. This popular trail, with limited parking, is known for its panoramic views of the Phoenix Valley.

Our time spent together during this multi-generational getaway provided wonderful memories along with the opportunity to spend quality time with two of our sons and their families. The author, Sandy, and Ira hiking on Gateway Loop Trail
As avid and energetic Colorado-based hikers, they did not have any issues on the steep segment with the hand railing or the rock scramble in the latter half of the trail. However, they did encounter a handful of less adept trekkers who balked when the trail became steep and rocky. On the same morning, we drove about half an hour to the Gateway Loop Trailhead at the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. While trekking on this popular, 4.5 mile moderate trail, we came across fellow hikers as well as runners, bikers, and mounds of fresh horse manure. The rolling terrain revealed key elements of the Sonoran Desert—giant saguaro cacti, prickly pear and native birds—along with views of the distant mountains. A slight breeze and an early morning start offset the intense heat. Had we started earlier and had more time, we might have tried one of the trails that fed off the loop.

Enjoying the pool with the family in Scottsdale
While we were hiking, our son, Aaron, his wife, Candice, and their two children-Max and Isabela--ate a leisurely breakfast, meandered around the resort property, and found their way to the pool. With a covered floatation device for Isabela and a hat, rash guard, and floatation vest for Max, the children were content to play in the water for hours. One morning, we accompanied Aaron and Max to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale. Max was in heaven at this 30-acre park where he was able to walk through a 10,000 square foot building with an abundance of model trains, tour a Roald Amundsen Pullman Car built in the 1920s, play in a kid-friendly covered playground, enjoy a restored carousel, and take a ten-minute train ride through the desert Arboretum. With so many kidfriendly attractions, it took a while to convince Max to return to the hotel.

To remain active, Ira and I worked out in the Resort’s Fitness Room, swam laps in half hour segments, and did aerobic activities in the pool. Due to the intense midday heat, our family congregated around the pool until it was nap time. Fortunately, the resort and numerous local restaurants were able to accommodate our diverse dietary needs—gluten free, pescatarian, dairy allergy, vegetarian, and a sesame seed allergy. On the day of our arrival, Rita’s Cantina & Bar Southwestern menu appealed to everyone in our group and offered a convenient way to satisfy our appetites. Other nights were spent sampling the cuisine at Taco Madera and The Herb Box. Our time spent together during this multi-generational getaway provided wonderful memories along with the opportunity to spend quality time with two of our sons and their families.

Lending a Furry Paw to Enhance Therapy ANIMAL ASSISTED THERAPY PROGRAMS OF COLORADO

An Arvada organization is elevating the counseling experience by highlighting the bond between humans and animals. Clinical waiting rooms, couches, and serious doctors might come to mind when thinking of therapy. Animal Assisted Therapy Programs of Colorado (AATPC) is revolutionizing this idea by bringing furry friends into the mix. The non-profit, founded in 2010, offers a new form of therapy with both licensed mental health professionals and rescue animals. With more than 12 species, from donkeys to bunnies, AATPC has a match for every client. Development Director Becki Taylor says, “They have their own backstories and their own temperaments.” Every animal was either rescued or re-homed before becoming a member of the AATPC team.

AATPC’s furry friends can participate in therapy in a variety of ways. The client can play with one of the animals outside while talking to the therapist or sit inside with one of their indoor animals. While the animals are cute and lovable, they also serve a vital purpose in providing effective therapy to the community. University of Tennessee research compared 10 studies on the effectiveness of animal assisted therapy and found that depressive symptoms were decreased in every case, no matter the species involved. Animal assisted therapy has been shown to calm stress hormones and release endorphins. At A ATPC, clients build relationships with the animals, and that enhances the therapy experience. Those connections can be meaningful enough to keep clients coming back to see the animals. Taylor says, “When therapy is complete, saying goodbye can be difficult.” While animal assisted therapy is helpful for all ages, over 80% of AATPC’s clients are under 24. The ranch offers specific youth

programs to connect with the younger generations. Certain animals work especially well with children with behavioral issues. Rabbits have been known to thump their feet when the child is getting elevated, which allows the young person to understand the effect their behavior is having and work to calm the rabbit. AATPC was founded almost by accident. Two doctors, Dr. Linda Chassman and Ellen Winston, had a traditional family practice before their pets, Mazey and Sasha, inspired them to bring animals into the mix. Now, AATPC has a six-month waiting list and plans to finish a new wing with six counseling rooms by the end of the year. AATPC has served the Arvada community for over a decade. Clients with limited resources are allowed to pay within their means which expands AATPC’s services to the entire community. More children are suffering from depression than ever before. There are several theories about why depression is on the rise in kids, starting with social media. Kids are constantly connected, especially teens, and they compare themselves to their peers and feel immense pressure to keep up. Oftentimes, children experiencing depression have experienced trauma, showed significant behavior problems, were self-injurious or have eating disorders. Their depression can look and present very differently than it does in adults, and can include pain, discomfort, fatigue, anger or ADHD-like symptoms. These are considered physical expressions of something emotionally upsetting. Teens who have stopped doing things they once loved and are instead choosing to be alone, and other behavioral problems, are also common symptoms. Any notable change in behavior should raise a red flag. Children tend to be more irritable, angry or withdrawn than sad. When a child is suddenly getting into trouble, dressing differently, struggling academically, or withdrawing from friends, it is time to start asking questions. If medical reasons can be ruled out, it is helpful to ask how things are at home or school. It is not unusual to see the child outwardly showing signs of what’s going on in the home. Divorce, family violence, financial issues, mental illness, loss, bullying, peer pressure and academic struggles are affecting children at unprecedented rates.
It is imperative that learning the signs and addressing depression becomes a vital part of our practice with children, as early and prompt interventions are crucial for positive outcomes. If you think your child might have depression, talk to them. It can be scary for them to admit, and they may not want to disappoint you by having those feelings. Make sure they know that you care about them and want to help if they are depressed. There are several screening tools and options for treatment, including medications or therapy, depending on the situation. Younger children benefit from a treatment approach that involves their parents or caretakers. Psychotherapy and medications can also be beneficial for most children and adolescents. We need to open our eyes wider and see what children are trying to tell us. Their negative behaviors and actions can often be a cry for help. Sometimes, parents or caregivers are in denial, too busy to address the issue or too close to the problem themselves. It takes a village of professionals, including teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses, and doctors to recognize when children are suffering and need help.

The Arvada Center is celebrating its new, updated appearance and new options for event services. The center has been part of the community since 1976, offering event spaces and a cultural outlet for people of all ages. Once operated by the city, the Arvada Center Event Space (ACES) at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is focused on providing attractive rooms for weddings, conferences, corporate gatherings, and anniversary parties, as well as theater, dance and other artistic programs. With the non-profit taking on the job of event planning, the level of service, options, and the overall attractiveness of the facility have been significantly enhanced. Keisha Makonese, is the director of the Arvada Center Event Space at 6901 Wadsworth Boulevard. She says previously, food options were limited. “We now have a list of caterers that we work with regularly. And with our new food and beverage partners we can offer themed cocktails—frozen drinks that will enhance our clients’ experiences.” The Arvada Center’s ballrooms have been operating under the name ACES for a little more than a year, and the decision to change the organization to a nonprofit has resulted in more funding opportunities. They’ve been able to replace furniture, repaint, and update the color scheme. The center has been exploring theater shows with a dinner or brunch add-on, and the facility also has new technology improving the overall theater

experience, with people being able to order their food and drink ahead of arriving. You can still get some of your favorite snacks, along with some new and more refined options. Keisha, herself, is a painter and makes jewelry, so the artistic realm is her field. “We have two amazing galleries at the center, and we have incredible dance and theater programs.” Being part of those artistic efforts brings a lot of joy to Keisha and to the community. Right now, the summer concert series is underway in the amphitheater, which holds 1,600 visitors. Other performance spaces outside and inside accommodate between 120 and 550 people. With free parking, the center is just 20 minutes from downtown Denver and steps away from Old Towne Arvada. Outside, people can enjoy a sculpture park and a playground for kids. The facility also features plenty of breakout spaces for small group meetings, and the center can even bring in instructors to do artistic sessions for corporate team building or for your bridal party. It’s a big change, says Keisha. “It’s very attractive and elegant.
