An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of men in our lives who have had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

ADVENTURES WITH THE DUTTON FAMILY The Dutton Family

18

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | LI F E + CULTURE

QUALITY OUTDOOR TIME The kickoff month of summer is finally here, and there’s plenty for Colorado families to do for fun. From sun-filled daylight and school summer breaks to the family vacations that accompany them, there’s no doubt families in the area will be taking advantage of the season. At least, for Josh Dutton and his nature-loving family, the summer break couldn’t have come any sooner. Arvada is home to plenty of outdoorsy families who’d rather hike the landscape than simply adore it, and the Dutton family is no exception. Josh is an area manager and home loan advisor with Caliber Home Loans. He says he and his wife take their 11 year-old daughter on at least a dozen trips every year. “Having a daughter changed my whole world, my whole life perspective.” The family is usually camping, and where there’s camping, there’s hiking. According to Josh, his daughter, Kara, can now hike 10 miles without even blinking, even at her young age. Their three dogs are a Golden Mountain Doodle, a Great Dane, and a coyote-husky mix, and they never miss a trip with the Dutton family. “The dogs are a huge

part of our lives, so we always take ‘em on our family outings. We wouldn’t want them to miss out on a hike.” The Duttons also participate in a lot of running events as a family, especially trail running, and they have a pool in their backyard—anything to stay out of the house and in the sun. For the Duttons, their commitment to getting away stems from a desire to get outside. Josh has always been a lover of the outdoors and is thrilled to have looped his family into it. “When you’re out in the middle of nowhere, and you can just live free, it’s absolutely magical.” Their family vacations are boosted by a certain asset which is a vehicle that turns camping up to the next level. Josh’s customized Dodge Rebel, AKA the “Rebellious Beast,” renders rough terrain a stroll on the beach. Bought in 2018 and outfitted in 2019, the monster of a truck has extensive upgrades built into it. From motor and exhaust upgrades to new paint, a truck bed tent, and the gear that accompanies it, Josh bought it with the clear intent to make it his own. It also features gas

and water tanks on racks attached to the truck bed for emergencies. According to Josh and accompanied by a chuckle, the vehicle’s moniker stems from his issue with authority. In true Colorado fashion, Josh’s passion for the outdoors, along with his Rebellious Beast, make for those lasting memories his daughter will remember into adulthood. With summer fast approaching, now is the time to start planning those nostalgia-worthy trips. This Father’s Day, June 19th, and beyond, consider getting outside with your little ones. Whether you’re going on a quick hike, a weekend camping trip, or a week-long backpacking excursion, enjoying the outdoors is bound to be rewarding.

Nick Huddle NH Services

Some people know what career lies ahead early on, and they follow that track without a hitch. For most, those plans morph into something unrecognizable but perhaps a better fit. Although Nick started out in automotive, he signed up for HVAC schooling on a whim of sorts. After seeing a set of HVAC tools in a display case, he felt a sudden urge to change direction. Plus, it was a fast track to work. “It’s half as much schooling, half as much in price…next thing I know, I’m learning about something I was never previously interested in doing.” After some tenure in the HVAC industry, Nick launched NH services in 2010. He says he still loves it after 27 years in the business. “I’m passionate about my work and enjoy what I do. Residential business, especially, brings a new challenge everyday. I never know what I’ll get, and I’m always moving around. It’s great if you’d rather not be in an office all day.”

If there was a local award for consistent charitable donors, Nicc Mares would be a top nominee. Nicc and his company, Makin Moves Moving & Labor, donate blankets to the homeless during the cold winters and offer free Goodwill donations on a regular basis. He often works with the Colorado Angels (Denver) Facebook page, which has nearly 3,000 members, to transport loads of clothes, shoes, and other handme-downs to those who can’t afford them. Nicc and his company carry out their work within Arvada and the surrounding communities in the region. He’s also focused on donating unused or unwanted furniture to those who can’t shell out the cash for a perfectly fine desk. Nicc delivers most of his items to the Jefferson County Action Center. That means his donations are going to multiple nonprofits, including Goodwill, Colorado Angels (Denver), the Jefferson Action Center, and even Habitat for Humanity. Nicc and his wife, Destiny, operate the moving and labor business together. At the end of the day, Nicc comes home to a happy and busy house filled with the sounds of love and multiple kids. The family members are fans of weekend travel and can be found at Red Rocks Church-Arvada Campus on Sundays. Nicc’s children, no doubt, are a huge influence on his daily routine. “They’re the reason I wake up, the reason I’m motivated, and they keep me young.”

The work-life juggling act, a common skill among working parents, is a tough one to perfect. It can be difficult to manage the schedules of you, your spouse, and your child, as well as all the little fires that arise here and there. Though given some practice, a super parent is born. Take Sean McNeil, as an example. He hustles as a weekend photographer after raising his child throughout the week as a “full-time, stay-athome dad,” in his words. After years of building his photography side business, Aspen Art Co, and having a child, the freelance photographer has recently been able to more seriously focus his energy on his photography work. “I get to spend the daytime raising my son and then moonlight as a photographer on the weekends.” Sean’s feet have been firmly sunken into professional photography since 2014. He first picked up a camera in 2014 and has been obsessed with

26

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

creating beautiful portraits ever since then. He had spent quite a bit of time working in the woodworking industry, but his passion for photography led him to develop a business with a flexible schedule, to make it work with his family. Once his son was born in June of 2021, Sean hit the pause button on woodworking and revisited his love for photography. Soon enough, Aspen Art Co was reborn as a freelance service that would encompass all of his artistic abilities rather than just wood art. Sean even won the 2022 Best Photographer in Golden award this past year for his thoughtful work. When asked about the demands of fatherhood and his passion-driven business, Sean said he enjoys the juggle. “It’s a great trade-off. We can do family stuff when my wife isn’t working, like going on hikes, camping--really anything outdoorsy. I enjoy it.”

30

G IV IN G BAC K | LOCA L SERVI CE S

A nonprofit effort in Wheat Ridge is making a big difference in the lives of ex-offenders. The 72 Hour Fund aims to help previously incarcerated individuals during those first, crucial days after their release and beyond. The organization called Doing His Time started the 72 Hour Fund in 2004. You may remember hearing about the agency’s Barna-Bus program, named for Barnabas in the Bible, the apostle Paul’s traveling companion. The Barn-a-Bus program became the traveling partner of people who wished to visit their incarcerated loved ones. The program offered free transportation to Colorado’s prisons. The average ride for a family member to visit a prisoner

in the state is 2 1/2 hours or 124 miles one way, and many people can’t afford that drive or are physically unable to drive that far. At its height, Barn-a-Bus was transporting more than 2,000 visitors a year. Unfortunately, the program was scuttled after a long hiatus in the midst of Covid, during which the fleet was targeted by thieves stealing catalytic converters. The organization hopes to restart it. In 2004, the organization launched the 72 Hour Fund, providing casual and professional work clothes, gear like steel-toed boots, and assistance with identification cards, bus passes, and new employment. Director Chris Mays says in the early days of the program, inmates were released with a check including any money they made while working in prison, but without ID cards, they couldn’t conventionally cash them. Often, they turned to bars, which were willing to cash the checks as long as alcohol was purchased with part of the money, but that violated the former prisoners’ parole. Chris says the 72 Hour Fund stepped in to fix that. “They shouldn’t have to violate parole to begin establishing themselves again.” The 72 Hour Fund helps about 150-160 people a month with about 75% of their clients being men. Chris says many of the people they help have burned their bridges. “Some are walking back into violent homes or homelessness.” The 72 Hour Fund tracks ex-offenders for several years after release. In Colorado, Chris says 1 in every 2 previous prisoners will re-offend within 3 years. He explains Colorado has one of the worst recidivism rates in the country (4th worst among the states according to the World Population Review), and the lack of affordable housing doesn’t help. However, among those who ask for assistance through various programs and networking nonprofits, the success rate increases significantly. Of those who receive services, only 1 in 9 men and 1 in 13 women re-offend, on average. “We have a provision from the Lord to do this work,” says Chris. “We love our clients and want to see them succeed.” To donate clothing or for more information, call 303-292-2304.

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

Photography Nathan Fluellen

This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.

Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu. But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels, a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos, the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop. Following some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus, a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds. ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round.
