Allison Bankston | allison.bankston@citylifestyle.com

Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the amazing women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women who have had an impact on me, I am thankful for each one. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself. I also love to see women who are able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them. We want to celebrate women this month, especially those who encourage and empower others, building people up and helping our community grow even stronger. That sense of togetherness and mutual support creates change. It breaks down barriers, and warmth follows. My mother stands out as one of my greatest influences. My mom, Melissa Sturma, taught me to have sound principles and morals and always pushed me to succeed. Over the years, like many single mothers, she made substantial sacrifices to ensure I had everything I could ask for—everything I would need. I'll always be grateful for her and for everything she has done and continues to do for me. My mother means everything to me. In this May Women's Issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark on our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community. Some are even making a difference on the other side of the globe. This month, I encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life. Reach out to them to thank them, and tell them how they have made a positive impact on you. Those conversations are rewarding and powerful.

stroke prevention ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY

Dr. Vish from Pragma Family Medicine recommends taking steps to lower your risk of a stroke and improve overall wellness

18

Dr. Anju Visweswaraiah (Dr. Vish)

May is Stroke Awareness Month, and we consulted Dr. Anju Visweswaraiah (Dr. Vish) from Pragma Family Medicine to educate us on how we can identify stroke warning signs, employ preventative measures, look out for critical risk factors, and outline how strokes may manifest differently in women than in men. Dr. Vish shares that strokes may present with a number of warning signs. Noticeably, chest pain, difficulty moving your arms and legs, slurred speech, and a facial droop are consistent signs of an impending or already occurred stroke. More subtle signs may be confusion or a severe headache. Many stroke patients describe them as “the worst headache of your life.” Although it may be easy to shrug it off as just another headache, it may, in fact, be a harbinger of a dangerous process to the brain itself. To prevent this catastrophic condition from manifesting in the first place, Dr. Vish has some tips, starting with consistent check-ups with your primary care doctor. The biggest things we can do to prevent stroke are to control high blood pressure, to quit or reduce smoking, and to manage cholesterol, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. All of these are conditions that can be addressed and managed by your primary care doctor, but many of these conditions are what are known as “silent killers” which means they can be causing harm without even showing symptoms. “A lot of people think that if they don’t feel badly, they don’t need to get regularly checked. But waiting until you start having symptoms may be too late to reverse the damage from things like diabetes and high blood pressure.” Furthermore, strokes can happen to anyone, regardless of age. While young people tend to have less risk factors for

strokes, genetic dispositions can render them more susceptible. Blood clotting disorders, aneurysms, and blood vessel disease can be genetic conditions that develop without a young person knowing it, only to cause harm later in life. Certain medications and high risk habits can also lead to unexpected strokes. Above all else, the top risk factor for strokes is high blood pressure, or hypertension. Smoking, whether it be cigarettes or marijuana, is a close second. Also high on the list of risk factors are diabetes, high cholesterol, and a sedentary lifestyle, as mentioned previously. Keeping a stroke at bay is largely dependent on leading a healthy, active lifestyle with regular health check-ups. When asked how strokes may manifest differently in men and women, Dr. Vish mentions, “Symptoms like headaches, chest pain, fatigue, and even neurological symptoms may go more unnoticed, because they’re not as typical in a woman as what you’d see in a man.” In a time where many women are full-time mothers who also work outside the home, the constant juggling of obligations mean these symptoms often fly under the radar. Dr. Vish says women can be at risk of downplaying or fighting through their symptoms, “Because of their busy lifestyle and family responsibilities, and prioritizing others’ needs and health before their own.” This Stroke Awareness Month, if you or someone you know is at risk, be sure to take Dr. Vish’s advice into account or share it with someone who needs it. You can reach Dr. Vish and the offices of Pragma Family Medicine by calling 720-790-8007 or visiting their website at pragmafamilymedicine.com.

Have you ever found an old piece of family jewelry or inherited a vintage watch from a late grandparent? Are you holding onto a piece that shined brighter in a past life? Maybe your watch or wedding ring requires cleaning, but you aren’t sure how often to have it done. We asked Kim and David Purdy from D&K Jewelers in Wheat Ridge, Colorado how to keep our watches, necklaces, bracelets, and rings sufficiently cleaned, as well as how to tell whether a piece requires reconditioning or complete repurposing.

JEWELRY CLEANING & MAINTENANCE Kim recommends getting your regularly worn jewelry cleaned and inspected twice a year. That’s easier to remember if you associate it with the special occasion by which you received it. An example is getting your wedding ring inspected six months after your anniversary or cleaning a necklace every December and then in the summer if you received it as a Christmas gift. For custom or vintage pieces that tend to lie in your jewelry box, this level of maintenance may not be necessary. However, Kim and David get plenty of clients who need an old family brooch repaired or a dated ring detailed. For quality assurance, D&K typically requests that they see custom pieces or repair work for a final inspection a couple of weeks after the work is done. This is to make sure that everything is still in place and that it’ll hold in the future.

REPARATIONS & ALTERATIONS At D&K Jewelers, a sale isn’t the real objective. Kim, who manages the creative design process, often works with clients who’d like to completely alter vintage pieces of family jewelry or repurpose a piece for a brand new item. While most big name jewelers don’t question these requests, Kim chooses to discuss it. She gets to know her clients, what their jewelry means to them, and what style of adornments they tend to wear. Then she is able to draft a design and relay the vision over to David, who handles the cutting and casting himself. While David and Kim will certainly repurpose your old family jewelry into something fresh, they just aren’t as quick to do so. Often it’s not a matter of preserving the soul of the jewelry but an issue of structural integrity. Kim offered an example of a recent client who’d just inherited some pieces from her mother and grandmother. D&K Jewelers was asked to take it apart for a new project, however, the duo ended up recommending against that. According to Kim, if they attempted to remove some of the stones on the piece, the original filigree hand work would be destroyed. While many shops might disregard this and take it apart anyway, Kim convinced the client of the design’s importance, “If it’s in pristine condition, old, or vintage, I won’t recommend taking it apart, but most of the time, customers want to turn

old jewelry into something else. In this case the customer was so happy that we made a few small changes to her piece and added a gemstone in place of a big diamond. She was so grateful that we talked her into doing what we did.”

TOOLS OF THE TRADE D&K Jewelers is old school. David sits down with a piece of circular wax and cuts rings by hand, the old fashioned way, and he’s an expert in hand fabrication. However, the shop isn’t without its technological charms. Kim is trained in CAD (Computer Aided Design) to design custom pieces, before building out jewelry with a 3D printer. Then she hands that piece over to Dave. He uses their own set of casting equipment to cast a piece and puts the treasure

together. In short, there’s nothing that D&K can’t do when it comes to watches, rings, and all things jewelry. The two jewelers have been in the trade for most of their lives. David has been cutting, repairing and casting for 44 years. In 2000, he met Kim, who started working at a jewelry store in 1999. They later formed D&K Jewelers and have made a name for themselves by earning the title of Most Popular Wedding Ring Store for three years on Channel 7’s A-List competition. Together, David and Kim have risen and remained within the Top Five Jewelers in Colorado for five years. Visit dnkjewelers.net, to browse their selection, as well as their watch repair, ring resizing, stone replacement, appraisal, and cleaning services, or you can call or text them at 303-421-4194. They look forward to seeing you!

INSPIRING WOMEN

Dr. Compton always makes a point to celebrate and encourage young, female patients who show an interest in math and the sciences. In June, she takes on the role as President of the Colorado Dental Association. “I try to do all I can to enhance the industry, so the public has trust in the dental care they’re receiving.” She says there still aren’t that many woman-owned dental practices. “I’ve gotten some odd questions such as why I work if my husband also works. I’ve learned to laugh it off. I think it’s funny people question it.”

Quebec City

Enjoy Canada’s rich history and architecture 30

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Canada’s most visited cities. This walkable and safe city is known for its remarkable architecture, dating back hundreds of years. Québec City was founded by the French in 1608 and, soon after, was recognized as the gateway to the North American continent. Comfortable shoes are a necessity when exploring the cobblestone streets in Upper Town, built on a cliff, and the Lower Town near the harbor. Year-round visitors are attracted to this city known for its history, culture, architecture, beautiful surroundings, boutique shops, and restaurants. A fall cruise itinerary with an overnight stay provided an opportunity for my husband and I to explore Quebec City. On our first day in port, a rainstorm pelted us when we disembarked. And like all seasoned travelers, we adjusted. Our rain gear – waterproof jackets, an oversized umbrella, and rain-resistant hiking boots – came in handy as we maneuvered the slick, hilly streets. Raindrops forced us to hopscotch between walking down the narrow streets and seeking refuge inside some of the city’s historic buildings. In drier and warmer conditions, a horse-drawn carriage ride might have been a preferred option.

NOTRE-DAME-DES-VICTOIRES CHURCH In 1929, the provincial government recognized this Roman Catholic Church as one of Québec City’s first three historical monuments. The current building has been renovated numerous times since the first stone was placed in the chapel’s foundation in 1688.

MONTMORENCY PARK NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE This park stands on the former site of the Province of Canada’s Parliament and the place where pivotal resolutions were drafted leading to the creation of the Dominion of Canada. We viewed statues of historical figures— ÉtiennePaschal Taché, (one of the founding fathers of the Confederation) and Sir George-Étienne Cartier (an architect of the Canadian Confederation).

Guests can choose from two different styles of rooms--either French with stones and exposed beams or an English-themed room with brick and woodwork. I strolled in and out of boutique shops lining both sides of a pedestrian walkway in the Quartier Petit Champlain. I watched artisans craft wooden pieces and looked on as another showed me alpaca sweaters from Charlevoix. I eventually wandered away from the shops and ended up near sections of the old wall. By luck, I passed by La Maison Jacquet, the oldest house in Quebec, built between 1675 and1676. Quebec City is a perfect getaway for travelers seeking a touch of European culture in North America.

On my second visit, I arrived by air. As the plane was circling near the airport, I identified the St. Lawrence River and spotted Montmorency Falls. As a solo traveler, I checked into the Auberge Place d’Armes, a 20-room

Trend i ng Green Stalk Market is a tropical oasis to liven up your home and enrich your life

Stalk Market started as a dream of two passionate women, Grace Noe and Leah Lear. Their friendship of more than 3 years blossomed over trips to the local plant nurseries and dreaming of having their own store. Together they started Stalk Market at Edgewater Public Market in May 2021, and later that year, the two women partnered with Arvada artist Alisha Capps to open a second Stalk Market shop in Olde Town Arvada. Grace says the communities have been extremely supportive. “They really want local businesses like ours to succeed.” Supporting other local companies is important for Stalk Market, too. The shop purchases 90% of its plant inventory from Calabrese Greenhouse in Arvada which has been in business for more than 70 years. Customers can expect helpful coaching on how to care for the plants they buy. The Stalk Market team cultivates a positive learning space, and Grace says they are even developing classes for the community. Those should start this summer. “It’s a hobby that should be accessible to everyone, financially and socially.” For Leah, being around plants is incredibly relaxing. “It’s a little tropical vacation from life when you’re in our shops, and it’s been amazing to see our vision come to life.” Alisha’s art is branded as Rendering of Cosmos. It includes a little bit of everything such as plants, mushrooms, and identification charts. “The success of it has been humbling, and I’m very grateful.” Plant enthusiasm can start as something small, but Alisha says you can develop an almost symbiotic relationship with your plants. “Watching people learn and get excited about it is beautiful and empowering.” Like many women, Grace says all three of them faced challenges as business owners. “We’ve grown up in a world that makes it hard for women, and we got together knowing we could change that and do something special for the community.” Check out Stalk Market’s selection on Grandview Avenue in Arvada or on West 20th Avenue in Edgewater, and visit their website at stalkmarketco.com.
