Celebrating the Joy of Children and Pets
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits!
This issue is one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for our community kids in this issue.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
I grew up having German Shepards in our family, I remember always having my favorite and how she would always pick me to relax with and spend some quiet time. I remember sharing my childhood secrets knowing she would never tell.
Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month. Cheers!

UNLEASHING JOY
HOW
ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI
Most of us already know that pets have a remarkable ability to bring joy, companionship, and unconditional love into our lives. Beyond their role as loyal companions, emerging research suggests that pets also play a significant role in improving mental health and overall well-being. Here we will explore some of the positive effects that pets can have on mental health and all of the various ways that they contribute to our emotional well-being.
One of the primary benefits of having a pet is the companionship that they provide. If you own a pet, you already know that their excitement when you arrive back home can alone spark so much joy. Pets offer unwavering loyalty and emotional support, which can help combat feelings of loneliness or isolation.

PETS BOOST MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
14
Whether you have a playful dog or cuddly cat, the presence of a pet can alleviate feelings of solitude and offer a sense of belonging. Studies have shown that pet owners often experience reduced levels of loneliness and have an increased sense of social support, leading to improved mental well-being.
Interacting with pets has been found to have a calming effect on individuals, helping to reduce stress levels. Studies have shown that the simple act of petting a dog or cat releases oxytocin, a hormone that is associated with relaxation and bonding. Spending time with a pet can trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine which are neurotransmitters that are associated with happiness and pleasure. This interaction can help to lower blood pressure, decrease cortisol levels and promote a sense of calmness and ease. Pets can create a soothing environment, provide an escape from the demands of everyday life and offer a distraction from stress.
In addition to this, pets have a remarkable ability to lift our spirits and brighten our mood. Whether it’s the fluffy tail of your cat or the wet nose of your dog, the presence of pets can boost our mood and create a positive atmosphere within our lives. They offer a non-judgmental and empathetic presence which allows individuals to express their emotions freely and feel completely understood.

Having a pet also often encourages physical activity. Pets require exercise and playtime. Regular physical activity has numerous mental health benefits, including stress reduction, improved sleep and increased endorphin levels. Taking a dog for a walk, playing fetch, or engaging in interactive play with a cat not only benefits the pet’s well-being but also promote a healthier lifestyle for their owners. The combination of
physical exercise and the companionship of a pet can contribute to enhanced mental and physical well-being.
If you’re considering adding a furry friend to your family, you can feel confident that the positive effects they bring extend far beyond wagging tails and playful antics. Embrace the joy that pets bring into your life and let them become an integral part of your mental health journey.

Fun Tricks To Teach Your Puppy
A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy
ARTICLE BAILEY MORRIS
We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!
SPEAK
Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.
STAY
Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.
SHAKE
Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.

To Kibble or Not
When it comes to nourishing our furry friends, choosing the right diet plays a vital role in their overall health and well-being. In recent years, the debate between natural raw dog food and dry kibble has gained significant attention. While both options have their merits, let’s explore the benefits of feeding your dog a natural raw diet.
One of the key advantages of natural raw dog food is the provision of optimal nutrition. Raw diets typically consist of fresh, unprocessed ingredients such as raw meat, bones, organs, and vegetables. These ingredients are rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, proteins, and healthy fats, which can contribute to your dog’s overall vitality.
Dogs are biologically designed to consume and digest raw food. Raw diets are free from artificial additives, preservatives, and fillers often found in dry kibble, which can lead to digestive issues. The high moisture content and natural enzymes in raw food can aid in proper digestion and absorption of nutrients,
reducing the likelihood of gastrointestinal problems such as bloating, gas, and constipation.
A natural raw diet can have a noticeable impact on your dog’s energy levels and coat condition. The abundance of nutrients and healthy fats in raw food can contribute to increased vitality and stamina. The balanced fatty acids found in raw food can support healthy skin and a lustrous coat.
For dogs with food allergies or sensitivities, transitioning to a natural raw diet can be beneficial. Dry kibble often contains common allergens like grains, artificial additives, and fillers, which can trigger adverse reactions in sensitive dogs. By eliminating these potential allergens and providing a more natural diet, you may notice a reduction in allergy symptoms such as itching, skin irritations, and digestive disturbances.
Feeding your dog, a natural raw diet offers numerous benefits when compared to traditional dry kibble. As with any dietary change, it is important to consult with your veterinarian.

Backyard Fun for Family and Pets
ARTICLE BY TRACY VAN RAVENSWAY
TRANSFORM YOUR BACKYARD INTO SUMMER HAVEN FOR KIDS, DOGS, AND PARENTS WITH THESE CREATIVE IDEAS!
Arizona's abundant sunshine attracts thousands of people to the state each year. While Phoenicians tend to retreat indoors during the scorching summer months, the rest of the year allows us to embrace and enjoy the beautiful weather. For families with kids and dogs, the anticipation of escaping the confines of the house is palpable.
Outdoor fun doesn't have to be limited to external destinations. Your own backyard can be transformed into a haven of entertainment for the entire family. As a real estate broker, I've had the opportunity to witness some truly remarkable backyard spaces over the years, ranging from basic setups to extravagant ones that rival Caesars Palace. While such opulent designs may not be everyone's cup of tea, there are countless creative and fun ideas that can make your backyard a delightful retreat.
Trampolines, while a popular choice among kids, can sometimes disrupt the aesthetic of a backyard. To overcome this challenge, consider installing smaller trampolines that are built into the ground. These blend seamlessly with an artificial grass area and are generally safer than their above-ground counterparts.
Playgrounds, although enjoyable for children, can also detract from the overall visual appeal. Opt for a modern-day obstacle course jungle gym that resembles the exhilarating challenges of American Ninja Warrior rather than the outdated designs from the 70s. Such setups not only engage your kids but also provide a thrilling experience for dogs who love to explore obstacle courses. Seek

Blow up pools are an easy way to cool off!

You can't beat a backyard movie A classic tire swing is fun
inspiration from places like Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course, where you can personally test the course and gather great ideas. You might even be inspired to install a zipline, earning cool points with your kids.
Pools are always a welcome addition to any backyard, but limited space or budget constraints may pose challenges. Consider a spool, which combines the elements of a play pool and a spa. Smaller than a regular pool yet larger than a spa, a spool with jets offers the perfect compromise. Alternatively, explore the option of blow-up pools, which come in modern and stylish designs. Remember to prioritize safety by implementing a gate or security measure to prevent unsupervised access, especially if you have young children.
Love the immersive experience of watching movies but don't have an outdoor TV? No problem. Create your own backyard theater with a portable movie screen and projector. Arrange blankets, pillows, and of course, snacks like candy and popcorn. You can even find inflatable movie screens available for purchase online. If a portable screen is unavailable, a white sheet hung on a block wall can serve as a suitable alternative. Enhance the ambiance with string lights to set the mood.
Board games are typically enjoyed indoors, but why not take them outside for a change? Build a sandbox for younger children while the older kids and adults engage in activities like bocce ball or horseshoe toss. All it takes is a few pieces of wood, some sand, and a little creativity to transform bare dirt into an enjoyable play area for everyone.
For a nostalgic touch, consider hanging an old-fashioned tire swing from a tree. If you're concerned about the swing's impact on the backyard's aesthetics, fashion a wooden swing with a flat board and ropes on each side. If you prefer a convenient option, online retailers like Wayfair and Amazon offer stylish porch swings that provide both comfort and charm. Embellish them with flowers and ribbons to add a touch of class.
“Transform your backyard into a haven of joy and entertainment for kids, dogs, and parents with these creative design ideas.”

Homemade sandboxes are a great DIY project
No matter your definition of "fun," whether it involves games or relaxation, there are solutions available to cater to the desires of your entire family, including your beloved pets. Creating an entertaining backyard space doesn't have to break the bank. It's an opportunity to unleash your creativity and make lasting memories with your loved ones.
When designing your backyard oasis, don't forget about the importance of landscaping. Incorporate
fun ACTIVITIES
TRAMPOLINE BLISS: Opt for smaller in-ground trampolines that blend seamlessly into your backyard, providing a safe experience for the whole family.
THRILLING OBSTACLE COURSES: Transform your backyard into an American Ninja Warrior-style playground, offering exhilarating challenges for kids and dogs alike.
SPOOL DELIGHT: Create a compact yet luxurious oasis with a spool—a hybrid of pool and spa—perfect for limited spaces or budget-conscious homeowners.
OUTDOOR CINEMA MAGIC: Enjoy movie nights under the stars with a portable movie screen and projector, transforming your backyard into a theater experience.
GAMES GALORE: Bring the fun outdoors with bocce ball, horseshoe toss, and sandbox adventures.
lush greenery, colorful flowers, and strategically placed trees to create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Consider adding a cozy seating area where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings. Install outdoor lighting to extend the usability of your backyard into the evening hours. ENJOYING SUMMER
In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEANN PARKER
Beach Ball Garland
Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!
Materials
• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)
• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)
• Thin rope or twine
• Air pump
Instructions
1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!
2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.
3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.
4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.

Watermelon Cake
A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!
Ingredients
• 2 large watermelons
• Assortment of berries and fruit
• 4 wooden skewers
• Toothpicks
• Whipped cream (optional)
• Fresh mint (optional)
Instructions
1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.
2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.
3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.
4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.

BACK TO SCHOOL
A Guide for the 2023-2024 Academic Year
ARTICLE BY BROOK SHELLER
As summer break flies by, and it seems to go faster every year, I’m sure you're considering the plan for your children’s education next year. In some local school districts summer is truly speeding by as they adopt a modified, year-round schedule sometimes called a “2-2-2”, allowing two weeks off each seasonal break, leaving a shorter summer. However, there’s more than just a schedule to consider when choosing the best schooling option for your child and family. Let’s review some options, and how best to support your child as they ease into the 2023-2024 school year.
Charter schools are relatively common here in Arizona. They are state-funded, public schools. Our legislation allows for parents to choose where to send their children to school, allowing for options aside from the local assigned school district. Every charter is different and may have a contrasting vision and style. Many charter schools require a uniform, taking the guesswork and arguments out of daily clothing choices. Research the charter schools within a radius of your
home that you’re willing to commute to and from daily. Take the time to read through the website, meet with the administration, and even ask friends and neighbors about their experiences.
Private schools are an additional choice to consider. Private schools have more freedom to organize and function, adhering to a specific set of beliefs often educational or religious in nature. There will be higher costs associated with attending a private school, however, there are some tax credit options I would encourage you to research and ask about.
Homeschooling is a decision that allows families freedom to choose how they learn within only the basic state requirements. If one or both parents have the time and flexibility to take on overseeing their child’s education this can be a beneficial option. There are a multitude of homeschooling styles and infinite ways to implement learning. The amount and varying types of curricula can be overwhelming but once settled on a style that suits the student and parent best, being closely involved in your child’s learning

can be incredibly beneficial to both parties. Many curriculums are “open and go” requiring little prep work from the parent, making them very simple to use.
Public school has become the most familiar educational path in our country, and it can be a great fit for many families. However, it’s important when considering this, and any brick-and-mortar school, that you take the time to connect with your child’s teacher and administration. Encourage open conversation with your child so that you stay informed about what is happening in their days. Volunteer as your schedule allows in order to build community.
Our children are a treasure. Take time to make the best choice for your family and let your children know that you’re available and a safe place for them when they experience both the good and bad of life. Hope this is a fruitful and successful year for your children!

Horse Power
ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY
Equine therapy, also known as horse therapy or equine-assisted therapy, is a unique and powerful therapeutic approach that involves interactions between individuals and horses. This article explores the incredible impact equine therapy has on children, unveiling how these majestic animals can bring about transformative changes and provide a nurturing environment for emotional, physical, and psychological growth.
Horses possess an innate ability to sense and respond to human emotions, making them excellent partners in therapeutic settings. Children, especially those struggling with emotional challenges such as anxiety, trauma, or behavioral issues, can form a deep bond with horses. Through equine therapy, they learn to communicate non-verbally, establish trust, and build emotional connections. The unconditional acceptance and non-judgmental nature of horses create a safe space for children to express themselves authentically.
Interacting with horses in a therapeutic setting encourages children to develop and improve their social skills. The presence of a horse fosters opportunities for teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication. As children learn to guide and communicate with the horse, they become more aware of their own body language, emotions, and the impact they have on others. This increased sensitivity translates into enhanced empathy, compassion, and a better understanding of social dynamics, which can positively influence their interactions with peers and family members.
Working with horses provides children with opportunities to set goals, overcome challenges, and achieve success. Accomplishing tasks such as grooming, leading, or riding a horse can significantly boost their confidence and self-esteem. Horses offer immediate feedback, reflecting the child's behavior and emotions. When a child successfully interacts with a horse, it reinforces their belief in their abilities, empowering them to face challenges and approach new situations with confidence and self-assurance.
Horses possess a calming and grounding presence that can help children regulate their emotions and manage stress. The rhythmic movements of riding a horse have a soothing effect on the nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Engaging in equine therapy activities such as grooming or simply spending time in the presence of horses can provide a sense of serenity and emotional stability. This can be particularly beneficial for children dealing with emotional turmoil, trauma, or disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Equine therapy offers physical benefits for children as well. Riding a horse requires balance, coordination, and core strength, which can improve gross motor skills and overall physical fitness. Additionally, the sensory experience of being around horses, feeling their warmth, hearing their rhythmic sounds, and experiencing their gentle movements, contributes to sensory integration and stimulation. This can be particularly valuable for children with sensory processing difficulties or developmental disorders.

Equine therapy has proven to be a remarkable intervention for children, bringing about profound and positive changes in their lives. Through the unique bond formed with horses, children develop trust, emotional connections, social skills, and empathy. Equine therapy nurtures their confidence, self-esteem, and emotional regulation abilities while offering physical benefits and sensory integration. The magic of equine therapy lies in the intuitive and therapeutic presence of these majestic creatures, providing children with a safe and transformative environment for personal growth and healing.
(Note: Equine therapy should always be conducted under the guidance of trained professionals who specialize in this therapeutic approach.)
