Summer Fun!

The ultimate guide to endless fun in the sun!

The ultimate guide to endless fun in the sun!
I hope this letter finds you lying by the pool or lake and soaking in some much-needed Vitamin D.
As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and the need to find adventures.
Sure, Fall has my favorite flavors and scents, Winter has its cozy charms, and I can't deny the beauty of Spring. But when the summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the long, languid days floating on a boat or seeking new adventures at higher elevations.
The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in the Northern Sonoran Desert. And even if Summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our ultimate summer bucket list (check the table of contents for ours!) and curling up with a new favorite beach read. (P.S. Teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!)
My family loves to rise early to play tennis and pickleball before the sun gets too hot to be outdoors. We also enjoy getting to cooler parts of Arizona to enjoy being out for longer periods during the summer days each year. We love being outdoors exploring new restaurants, shopping, and even just having a picnic in the park. There's something about being in nature that feels so rejuvenating and refreshing.
Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experience of the Northern Sonoran Desert this Summer!

This month marks Independence Day, as America reaches 247 years. One of the cornerstones of the Declaration of Independence is the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” and lately, a rising wave of people are exploring these virtues as it pertains to alcohol use.
The “sober curious” movement continues to gain momentum, challenging cultural norms of alcohol consumption and encouraging individuals to adopt a more inquisitive spirit about their relationship with alcohol. This trend has piqued the interest of folks from all walks of life and will continue to offer the opportunity for a more conscious approach to engaging in social settings.
The root of sober curiosity varies among individuals, with common motivating factors including overall health, personal growth, emotional clarity, financial considerations, relationship improvement, and prioritization of goals and values.
Alcohol use is deeply ingrained in the way we socialize as adults and choosing to go against the (fermented) grain can be a tricky step to take. The entry point to a life with less or no alcohol is often inspired by the growing trend of alcohol-free challenges such as “Dry January” and “Sober
Fresh ingredients are key to a great mocktail
October.” These challenges invite the sober-curious to experience life without alcohol for 1 month in a widely accepted communal setting which helps reduce the burden of social pressure.
Regardless of the social influence to use alcohol, casual sobriety is becoming more accessible and will continue to as this movement captivates multigenerational attention. Restaurants and cocktail bars across the valley have added dynamic zero-proof menus for the sober curious to indulge while remaining clear-headed and hangover-free. A book published in 2018 by Ruby Warrington “Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol” is an excellent source of education and an invitation to consciously reflect on alcohol use.
As summer continues to warm up, the opportunity to exercise sober curiosity grows. If you’re hosting an event and desire curated non-alcoholic options, consider contacting The Nixer - The Valley’s first non-alcoholic pop-up bar. The Nixer believes that choosing not to drink alcohol shouldn’t limit your social experiences and are here to support your sober-curious festivities. On the Fourth of July, as we come together to celebrate the independence and freedom we enjoy as a nation, it is essential to remember the courageous men and women who have fought and served in the military to protect those very values. Among them is Brian Wickander, a Marine veteran who has found solace and purpose in the art of photography.
Brian Wickander's journey began in Eastern Oregon, where he grew up immersed in the beauty of nature. Fascinated by his father's military background, Brian's interest in the military was sparked early on. After graduating high school in 2002, he embarked on a new path and enlisted in the Marines. The decision was not an easy one, but Brian felt compelled to serve his country and make a difference.
Brian's transformation began in October 2003 when he arrived at the Marine Corps recruit depot (MCRD) in San Diego for boot camp. Amidst the backdrop of raging fires in California that year, the intensity and challenges of training became a defining moment. Despite facing a setback due to a leg fracture, Brian's determination led him to choose the path of healing within a rehabilitaion platoon, allowing him to eventually graduate and proudly earn the title of Marine.
During his four years in the Marine Corps, Brian experienced two deployments to the Al Anbar province of Iraq. The harsh realities of a foreign land, the dangers of war, and the loss of comrades shaped his perspective forever. In the midst of the desert, Brian formed bonds of brotherhood with his fellow Marines, navigating the highs and lows of patrolling and witnessing the world outside the safety of his homeland. These experiences left an indelible mark on his soul.
Coming home from the military posed challenging, but during this transition, Brian discovered photography’s therapeutic power. Reflecting on that time, he recalls, “I drifted after leaving the Marines, struggling to find my place. But picking up my camera and returning to the mountains brought peace. Through the viewfinder, the world vanished. Since then, I haven’t set the camera down.” Brian’s photography became his therapy allowing him to reconnect with himself and the serene beauty of nature.
“DO WHATEVER YOU DO INTENSELY. THE ARTIST IS THE MAN WHO LEAVES THE CROWD AND GOES PIONEERING. WITH HIM THERE IS AN IDEA WHICH IS HIS LIFE.”
— ROBERT HENRI
For Brian, photography goes beyond capturing beautiful images; it is a way to communicate his experiences, emotions, and perspectives. Through his lens, he finds parallels between the discipline and focus required in the military and the art of capturing the perfect shot. The subjects he chooses, such as the awe-inspiring landscapes and the majestic wild horses of Arizona, hold a deeper connection for him—a reminder of the freedom he fought to protect.
Independence Day holds special meaning for Brian Wickander. It is a celebration of a country that has given him opportunities and freedom. Despite the challenges and divisions that exist in today’s society, Wickander urges us this Fourth of July to honor those who have sacrificed for our cherished American values and liberties, reminding us, “Let us reflect on the brave men and women throughout history who made sacrifices, as we truly appreciate the abundance and opportunities available to us in the United States.”
Brian Wickander's journey from Marine to photographer is a testament to the power of resilience, self-discovery, and the healing potential of art. His experiences in the military have shaped his perspective and given him a profound appreciation for the freedom we celebrate on the Fourth of July.

Adult- and Kid-Friendly Natural Bug Repellents from A Beautiful Mess

MATERIALS:
• 10 drops lemon essential oil
• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
• 8 drops lavender essential oil
• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil
• 1.5 ounces distilled water
(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)
• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
MATERIALS:
• 10 drops lemon essential oil
• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
• 4 drops lavender essential oil
• 1.5 ounces distilled water
(minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)
• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
