I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this inaugural issue will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our local community. We approached this issue of Anthem City Lifestyle from a mindset of valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We want to provide inspiration for making lasting, long-term relationships by introducing you to those who make up the fabric of our community. I am honored and excited to be able to launch Anthem City Lifestyle magazine serving the Anthem, Desert Hills, and New River communities. I took on this role because it gives me the opportunity to be part of this community in ways I could not before. I’ve seen firsthand how our local business owners and leaders do so much more for the community than run businesses. I would like to thank my editor Amanda Miller and the founding partners; I could not have accomplished this launch without you. And I am grateful for the warm welcome the community has given Anthem City Lifestyle. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community, but it also means loving what is near—those under your own roof included. Grab a coffee at your favorite local coffee shop and head home for a game night with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine and some cheese from L’Entrata and indulge with a movie night. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages. The Anthem area may not currently be thought of as a wedding destination, but that perspective is changing, especially if Aleah Chilleen has anything to say about it. She’s the proprietor of The Venue at Chilleens and has transformed a casual steak house into a thriving wedding and event hotspot. Located in Black Canyon City, just off the I-17, Chilleens has long been an area landmark. Aleah’s parents purchased the property in 2003, and she bought it from them in 2016. Since then, she’s been

implementing plans to expand the site and enhance its offerings. While Chilleens on 17 still offers excellent steak and hometown favorites, The Venue at Chilleens is quickly earning a reputation as a destination for beautiful weddings and events. Aleah’s ultimate goal is to create a one-stop event venue for out-of-town guests, as well as locals, complete with onsite lodging. Currently, the venue hosts more than 100 weddings annually after adding the option in 2013. They also offer meeting space for corporate events and parties. CONTINUED >

EVENT PLANNING MADE EASY One of the ways in which The Venue at Chilleens aims to exceed their clients’ expectations is through all-inclusive solutions. Chilleens’ all-encompassing event-planning services include a choice of two dinner options, nonalcoholic drinks, and an open bar; DJ with a custom playlist; five hours of photography services; a three-tier wedding cake; and all floral arrangements in their large meeting space. Similar packages are available for meetings and corporate events, also at all-inclusive price points. Currently, packages range from $1,000 to $20,000+ depending on the number of guests, the type of event, and what clients choose to include. The goal of a one-price option is to make events run more smoothly. Aleah has cultivated a team of vendors who work well together like a well-oiled machine, allowing guests to just relax and enjoy the event. However, if someone has vendors they prefer to use, that can work, as long as the vendors are licensed. “Our team of vendors works really well together as a team, allowing us to produce memorable events with minimal stress,” shared Aleah. For weddings, she jokes that all couples need to bring are their outfits; the rest is taken care of by Chilleens.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY In addition to providing a stunning backdrop for weddings, parties, and corporate events, The Venue at Chilleens is excited to give back to the community. The Chileen Dream Foundation’s mission is to grant weddings and vow renewal

ceremonies to couples whose lives have been drastically affected by illness, injuries, and other challenges that make planning or financially affording their dream wedding unattainable. “Our entire team of vendors is on board with this,” gushed Aleah, “and we hope to grant at least one wedding each year from start to finish.” Packages will include everything from invitations to lodging. Nominations will begin in the summer of 2023 as couples are invited to share their story. Next, The Chilleen Dream Foundation’s board of directors will review nominations and choose their top three candidates. The community will be asked to vote for the couple they feel is most deserving.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE While launching The Chilleen Dream Foundation, Aleah has other big goals for the event venue in the future. In addition to the land on which the venue stands, Aleah also owns 3.5 acres to the south, which is currently being eyed for an expansion that will include guest lodging. The vision now is to provide cabins and an RV park, and Aleah is currently in conversations with an architect and the county to firm up logistics. Until that happens, though, The Venue at Chilleens is playing catch-up. “We had to postpone 72 weddings during the pandemic,” Aleah shared. “Once we could start back up, we had our biggest wedding year ever, hosting 135 events in 2022. Our couples were willing to choose any day of the week we could book them!” It’s been a very busy year! CONTINUED >

Luckily for those rescheduled guests, they were welcomed back to an updated space since Chilleens underwent some key refurbishments during the month they were closed during the pandemic. The staff is grateful to be back to normal and able to delight guests once again at the venue. Plus, there’s always an opportunity to celebrate at Chilleens, where the kitchen serves up fresh-smoked barbecue and steaks in the restaurant. Outdoor bar and patio areas allow guests to enjoy music at their fall and spring concert series as well as providing additional event space. And another, larger patio is in the plans to host events for up to 70 guests. It could soon be a given that the Anthem area is indeed a renowned destination for weddings and events.

A great man by the name of Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” Although it is clear Dr. King was not talking about interior design, his words can translate in so many ways. Today, I would like to open my personal home to show how small things can make a big impact on design. Anthem Country Club is the location of our new house. As an Anthem resident for more than 18 years, my poor kids have moved nine times between their father

and me! Since our last move in May 2022, I have vowed this is the last time. But I admittingly have a problem. I see a dated but good space and immediately want to remodel or transform it. The first room that received a major transformation in our home was the kitchen. Although we ended up tearing everything out and changing the layout, there were small changes we could have done to spruce things up. Here are some tips for an easy (and mostly inexpensive) kitchen facelift:

1. Add hardware to the cabinets. It is transformative! And you can switch them out every year for a different style and updated look. 2. Add a tile backsplash. I recommend something that is classic and will stay in style for years to come. 3. Paint the cabinets. This is a job best completed by a professional since it is labor intensive. 4. Splurge on nice appliances. This is an expensive one, but great appliances can make or break the look of a kitchen. Want to make a BIG impact and transform a room in one day? I have four words for you: peel and stick wallpaper! It’s easy to apply and remove, and you can change it out quickly for a new vibe. Our front room needed a refresh, so we transformed the once-plain room into a relaxation/game room with simple wallpaper and paint. Remember, “You can do small things in a great way.” While you are working on your home, don’t forget to do the other small things that will make a big impact in our world too—just like MLK did.

WERE YOU BORN IN ARIZONA? No, I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, but I only lived there briefly before my family relocated to Texas. When I was a junior in high school, the family moved again, this time to Arizona. Anthem was the chosen community because my mom, who was a realtor, wanted a small town with a close-knit community.

Commerce’s Executive Director Has a Heart for Local Business

It seems almost fated that Tamara Clark would step into the role of executive director of the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce at the end of February 2022. With deep ties to the community, she is a natural fit to represent local businesses. Since she took the reins, membership has grown and relationships have strengthened. And she’s just beginning to hit her stride.

WHEN YOU MOVED TO ANTHEM, WHAT WAS NEXT? I graduated from Boulder Creek High School, where I played softball and received a scholarship to play in college. I got my bachelor’s degree at NAU, commuting twice a week from Anthem. I then moved to California for grad school, and there I fell in love with business and nonprofits. I had two community-based positions at the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce and Microsoft.

AFTER LIVING IN CALIFORNIA, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE BACK TO ANTHEM? Our first daughter was born in California in 2017, and my husband and I wanted to be closer to family at that point, so we moved back to Anthem at the end of that year. WHEN DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THE POSITION AT THE CHAMBER? Matt Word, the past president of the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce, is a good friend of my parents, and they were at dinner one night when Matt told them that the Chamber was looking for a new executive director. I applied, interviewed, and was offered the position. I took it because this is an amazing business community. The heart of this community is small business because most owners live and work here. I really saw the opportunity to make a difference hyper locally rather than across the state, and that drew me to the role. WHAT ARE THE CHAMBER’S FUTURE PLANS? Ultimately, we want to have an official visitors center, complete with a sign on the freeway. The center would provide local businesses with an opportunity to share their information and highlight our wonderful amenities here in Anthem. We’re really looking at growth now, especially with the new Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company going up. The Chamber needs to keep up with the growth yet stay small enough to offer that one-to-one interaction we all appreciate about our community.

Not everyone is brave enough to launch a new business at the height of a global pandemic, but that’s just what partners Shaughn Ryan, Alison Ryan, Roman Trugillo, and Cary Westmark did when they opened Sunset Cyclery in July 2020. And it seems that was exactly the right thing to do, especially since many people were looking for opportunities to get outside and enjoy nature when the rest of the world seemed to be shutting down. Located just minutes from some of the state’s best trails, Anthem provides the ideal backdrop for a mountain bike shop. The owners are all longtime Anthem residents and outdoor enthusiasts who saw a need to continue to provide support to area cyclists when the community’s only other bike shop was on the verge of shutting down. One of the partners—a regular customer of the previous business—encouraged the team to launch and move into the space vacated by the other bike shop. That first location, in the plaza on the northeast corner of Gavilan Peak Parkway and Anthem Way, helped Sunset Cyclery gain traction with customers of the shop that previously occupied the same space. Before long, the bike shop had gained a loyal following among area cyclists. By the summer of 2022, it had outgrown its smaller footprint and had to relocate to a much larger location on the west side of town.

FOCUSED ON SERVICE The primary focus of Sunset Cyclery’s business is service because, as co-founder Alison Ryan puts it, “Bikes require a lot of maintenance to keep them in the best working order.” The shop’s services include everything to keep riders on the trails, from routine maintenance and tune-ups to

customizations that create one-of-a-kind rides. The staff will even get bikes ready to ship if customers are moving or want to purchase and send a bicycle as a gift. For the cyclists who prefer to self-service their bikes, they’ll find all they need at Sunset Cyclery, from tubes and tires to brakes, seats, and pedals. And of course, all the specialized tools are available as well. When it comes time to purchase a new bicycle, the shop boasts a wide selection. Sunset Cyclery specializes in mountain bikes and BMX and carries trick scooters as well; plus, all the accessories riders need to stay safe and look cool on the trails are readily available. Prefer a road bike? While there isn’t a large supply at the store, one of the helpful team members is happy to order whatever your heart desires.

STEEPED IN COMMUNITY All the partners at Sunset Cyclery are avid outdoor enthusiasts. Roman and Cary were friends and coworkers previously, and Cary met Shaughn at the former Anthem bike shop. Alison had previously managed a retail location with running shoes in Flagstaff, so she brought not only her passion for fitness but also her sales, operations, and management experience. Eager to support the next generation of cyclists and keep the excitement going for area youth, Sunset Cyclery stays actively involved in the community. No surprise with such an energized group of partners. Their efforts so far have included: • Supporting a local Scout troop in acquiring their cycling merit badges. That entailed providing classes to teach the boys basic bike maintenance and safety.

The Phoenix Sonoran Desert Offers Many Options to Get Outside The Phoenix Sonoran Desert provides the ideal backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts. With several trailheads located in Anthem itself, as well as within just a few miles, you’ll never be at a loss for your next destination. Head out early to be treated to some of the stunning hot-air balloons that grace the skies each morning. And since most nearby trails welcome bikes, if you prefer wheels instead of feet, you’ll be just as at home. Here are some of our local favorites. Hungry for more? The View from Daisy Mountain

Daisy Mountain Next to Gavilan Peak, Daisy Mountain is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Anthem. At an elevation of 3,143 feet, it represents a bit of a climb. There are two ways to approach the peak: from a neighborhood at the end of Navigation Way or from inside the Country Club. The former is a 6.6-mile trek, while the latter is half that at 3.4 miles. Either way, your efforts are rewarded with a stunning view of the aforementioned Gavilan Peak and all of Anthem below.

Although not in Anthem itself, Deem Hills is just 15 miles away, to the north of Happy Valley Road and 51st Avenue. The Deem Hills recreation area offers a dog park, playground, various sports fields, and of course, the trailhead. Take your pick of how you choose to traverse the hill itself, with options that allow you to enjoy the length and elevation that work for you, from just over one mile to nearly eight. Wildlife abounds in the area, and you'll be treated to a bird's-eye view of the Central Arizona Project canal on the north-side trails.

When you want to sneak in an easy-to-moderate hike that's a breeze to get to with ample parking, head to Desert Hills Trailhead. Located on the southside of Carefree Highway and 7th Avenue, this trailhead is always buzzing but never too busy. The most popular hike here is Sidewinder to Ocotillo, which lets you experience a good chunk of the Phoenix Sonoran Desert Preserve in a quick 5.2 miles with 531 feet of elevation. This is a fitness trail for hikers, bikers, and runners alike, so be ready to share the trail on your outing.

There are many ways to access the Black Canyon Trail, but if you start at the Black Canyon City Trailhead, just west of exit 242 on I-17, you'll find one of the few local areas with running water much of the year. Go after a good rain, and you'll be rewarded with enough water in Slate Creek to soak your toes and enjoy an afternoon at "the beach." Some people don't even go further than the creek, but if you do, you can access Cottonwood Gulch after about eight miles. Or just turn around when you're done for the day. With tongs, turn each piece 90 degrees after 2 minutes. Flip meat and repeat the process. Cooking time should be 4–5 minutes total for a nice medium-rare chop. Let rest 3–4 minutes before serving.

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Place the rack of lamb on a large cutting board. French the bones with a sharp filet knife, stripping cartilage and fat around the bone. This will give an aesthetic look for the final presentation. Lay the rack flat and slice in between each bone to make rib chops.

1 rack of lamb chops 2 tsp olive oil 1 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh cracked pepper

Heat a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add oil and onions and stir until onions are fragrant and become translucent, 30–45 seconds. Add rice to the onions and oil and stir until grains are toasted and glossy, about 3–5 minutes. Add cocoa and stir well to coat the grains. Once grains are coated, add 1 1/4 cup of stock, lower heat to medium low, and cook, stirring constantly, until the liquid absorbs, about 4 minutes. Add cherries, juice from the orange, and 1/2 cup of stock. Cook and stir until the liquid absorbs, about 5–6 minutes. Add the remaining vegetable stock and continue cooking until rice is tender. Fold in the chocolate pieces and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat and serve with the grilled lamb chops. Garnish with your favorite micro green or arugula.

Shaved Asparagus and Arugula Salad

1 pound large asparagus 1 1/2 cups baby arugula 4 dried black mission figs 1 cup red wine 2 Tbsp crumbled Stilton cheese 3 Tbsp champagne vinaigrette

directions: Place the asparagus flat on a work surface, and one at a time, run a vegetable peeler from the tip to nearly 3/4 of the way down to the stem. Turn the spear over and repeat on the other side. Place the peeled asparagus in a bowl. Place the figs and wine in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook until the figs are soft, about 5–8 minutes. Remove the figs from the pan with a slotted spoon and refrigerate until ready to serve. Continue cooking the wine until reduced to a thick syrup—1–2 tbsp—which should take about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool before using. To assemble, combine asparagus, arugula, in a bowl and toss with vinaigrette. Place salad onto plates. Cut each fig in half and place around salad. Sprinkle with 1 1/2 tsp of cheese over each plate. Drizzle with wine reduction and serve.
