LIFESTYLE LETTER
November 2023 Give Thanks In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude; its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves; and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. One moment that captures my gratitude happened last Thanksgiving, as we gathered around the table, laughter filled the air, and I looked at my family, appreciating the bonds that held us together. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the love and support they provide. Their presence in my life is a constant reminder of life's blessings, and for that, I am truly thankful. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of thanksgiving, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful and stop to reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family,

Gather
Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Enduring Spirit THE NAOMI HOUSE SPREADING HEALING AND HOPE.
ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA JAMES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY
Early on a September morning, photographer Ashley Hathaway and I embarked on a journey northward, our curiosity piqued and our hearts open. Our destination: Joseph City, just off the Navajo Nation, home to NAOMI House, a sanctuary for Native American children in need. This trip unfolded unexpectedly; all sparked a few weeks prior by a serendipitous mention of the organization through a local church some of you may know as "Church at the Chip" in Cave Creek. The church had been working with NAOMI House for quite some time and was announcing their latest donation of a van. I was moved by the Church’s involvement, yet I had no idea that in just a few months I would be driving there to meet their executive director, Genevieve Skidmore. As our November issue lingered on the horizon, and I contemplated the theme of gratitude, it struck me like a lightning bolt—NAOMI House was not only a story to tell, but I wanted to know more. Founded in 1993 by Linda Thompson, Native American Outreach Ministries, Inc. (NAOMI) emerged as a non-profit safe haven for Native American children who endure alarming rates of abuse, making NAOMI House an essential refuge for those in crisis. Operating as a front-line emergency shelter, NAOMI provides sustenance, clothing, shelter, safety, and prayer whenever the need arises. Thompson's vision was profound yet simple: "It takes a village to raise a child, but when a child has been abused and wounded, it takes more than just one village - it takes many." NAOMI embodies one of those vital villages, with dedicated individuals like Genevieve Skidmore who’s been serving as its executive director for over 15 years. That morning, we arrived at a collection of buildings on a few acres of natural land on the lower part of the Colorado Plateau, east of Flagstaff and just off Interstate 40. The landscape in this area is a wide and colorful mesa with low brush and bright blue skies with big puffy clouds. The air was warm, and there was a light breeze. It felt calm and expansive. The kids were in school, and we wouldn’t be able to meet them, so Skidmore invited us into the office where she shared her
incredible journey. Genevieve spoke with such conviction and powerful authenticity. Both Ashley and I were instantly captivated by her testimony and passion for the mission. Genevieve Dawn Skidmore is a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe of South Dakota on her mother’s side and grew up in South Dakota near the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her own experience with addiction, abuse, and ultimately an encounter with God is what led her eventually to serve at NAOMI House. When she first arrived, she wasn’t sure she was cut out for the work, fearing it was too much which anyone could understand. NAOMI House is contracted by the Navajo Nation as an emergency shelter for twelve children and licensed as a full-term foster care for ten more. The dedicated staff, comprising six adults and up to twenty-six children, operates tirelessly, serving on the front lines 365 days a year until the children can hopefully be reunited with their biological families. Despite moments of doubt, Skidmore’s unwavering sense of purpose drove her forward. She recalls this early time in her autobiography titled Send Me I’ll Go, “After one weekend, I knew I couldn’t be the same. I didn’t know what saying ‘yes’ meant. I had no way of knowing what I was getting ready to step into. But I knew I was called to Native American ministry.” This dedicated spirit motivates Skidmore and the staff to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children around the clock, providing them a dependable schedule, love, and access to healthcare through the local IHS (Indian Health Care Center). Over the years, countless children have found refuge at NAOMI House, their stories filled with both heartache and the joy of family reunification. NAOMI House's vision extends beyond its current location. They aspire to sustain and expand their safe houses, introduce a young adult program for transitioning youth, and emphasize family reunification and healing in various locations across the country. They've recently begun to establish a presence on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. They are able to continue their work with funding from tribal contracts, emergency shelter services, and foster care. Yet approximately half of their support comes from the generous monthly donations made by individuals inspired to help.

After our conversation, Ashley, Genevieve, and I ventured outside to take photos and explore the property. We walked the grounds, our hands shielding our eyes from the bright sun. Genevieve pointed out the location for a future residence where she and her family would eventually reside. Nearby, the beginnings of a barn hinted at plans for equine therapy and even a garden. The vision is beautiful. As we stood engrossed in conversation near the fence, on the other side, a herd of wild horses appeared galloping toward us. They abruptly halted, kicking up a cloud of dust that swirled high above as they began to nibble the dry grass and keep watchful eyes on us. In their presence, I saw a reflection of the enduring spirit that defines both NAOMI House and those who wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to a greater purpose. NAOMI House stands as a beacon of hope on the Navajo reservation, addressing an urgent need faced by many Native American communities. It's an oasis in the desert of adversity, offering solace to children who have endured unimaginable trials. The work of NAOMI House is indispensable, and its impact resonates far beyond the walls of this haven. As Thanksgiving approaches, we're reminded of the tireless efforts of individuals like Genevieve Dawn Skidmore and the vital work of organizations like NAOMI House. In the spirit of thankfulness, let us rally behind their mission and contribute to a brighter future. If you're interested in supporting NAOMI House and making a positive impact in the lives of Native American children or want to know more, please visit their website at www.thenaomihouse.org or call 928-587-5737. After all, it takes a village. Skidmore, G. (2021). Send Me I’ll Go: Preparing for the Call. Trilogy Christian Publishers.

HOUSE
Genevieve, in addition to her role at NAOMI House, is the Founder of Tribes Arise Int’l. Her book, “Send Me I’ll Go,” serves as both a testament to her journey and a prophetic call to awaken, arise, and respond to the Kingdom’s purpose. As an ambassador of First Nations, Apostolic teacher, author, speaker, and child advocate, Genevieve fervently spreads the life-changing message of hope found in Christ. She knows firsthand the power of God to deliver from darkness, a knowledge that fuels her unrelenting passion to help others find freedom and discover their purpose.

Anthem Pets Early life wasn’t too easy for Forest the cat. At just a few weeks old, he was found alone in the street, underweight and ill. He was taken to the Arizona Humane Society showing symptoms of severe gastrointestinal distress. Though his diagnostic tests came back clear, Forest spent all his time at the shelter isolated from other cats for fear he was contagious.
After six weeks with no improvement, a local Anthem-area woman named Megan was assigned to foster Forest for a few days with the hope he could gain enough weight to be neutered. When Megan brought Forest home, she realized he was still very sick. She contacted a local animal rescue shelter to discuss options for treating him. However,

she was told they could do nothing more for Forest and that he would be put down in a matter of days if they could not find a home for him. Megan, however, was determined to care for Forest. “I had the choice to take him back to the shelter to be euthanized or have him signed over to me,” said Megan. “I chose the latter.” Since Forest’s medical tests showed no sign of parasites or disease, Megan took it upon herself to try the simplest solution — she changed the brand of food he was eating. His health improved immediately, and he began to gain weight. She helped Forest learn some socialization skills, which were lacking after all the weeks he spent in isolation, and just a little while later Megan’s personal vet gave Forest a clean bill of health. In June, Megan reached out to Anthem Pets, a nonprofit animal rescue center in Anthem, AZ. Her goal was to get help in finding Forest his forever home. Touched by Forest’s story and Megan’s commitment to him, Anthem Pets volunteer Jessica Harris jumped to action. “Megan was such an advocate and saved his life when no one else wanted to try to help him anymore,” Jessica said. “Animals need us to be their voice, and doing nothing silences that voice.” Jessica began searching for a new foster family to care for Forest, and she was very pleased when several people showed interest in him. She sifted through the inquiries trying to find the best fit for his needs and personality and settled on a family who quickly came to love Forest and decided to adopt him.
Anthem Pets is no stranger to success stories like Forest’s. Founded in 2005, the rescue believes every pet deserves a loving home. Every animal that arrives at Anthem Pets receives comprehensive care, including necessary medical attention, vaccinations, and spaying or neutering. Their team of compassionate volunteers is committed to finding the perfect match between pets and their future families, taking extra care to screen and counsel applicants to ensure both pet and adopter are prepared for a fulfilling and lifelong companionship. Through Anthem Pets’ efforts, abused and abandoned animals get a second chance, and many lost pets are reunited with their owners through the use of a Pet Hotline and a very active Facebook page. In July 2023 alone, Anthem Pets is proud to have rescued 25 pets and found loving homes from 17 pets. Anthem Pets offers an impressive home-based fostering program to provide temporary homes for animals that need extra care, help with socialization, or time to recover after medical procedures. This crucial bridge allows pets to flourish in a home environment while they wait for their forever families to find them. Anthem Pets’ foster families play an integral role in providing love, stability, and nurture to these animals, setting them up for a successful transition into their permanent homes. Anthem Pets is not only focused on finding homes for animals but also dedicated to building a compassionate community. Through various outreach programs, workshops, and educational initiatives, the rescue promotes responsible pet

By contributing to Anthem Pets, people can become an advocate for the voiceless and play a significant role in their journey towards a better life. Anthem Pets provides a shining example of the power of compassion and the incredible impact that a community can
make when they come together for a common cause. Through their unwavering dedication, this remarkable organization has transformed countless lives, offering hope, love, and a second chance to animals in need. Anthem Pets likes to remind its stakeholders that every life they touch is a testament to the extraordinary bond between humans and animals — a bond that enriches our lives and makes the world a brighter place, one paw and person at a time.

It’s Pumpkin Bread Season
The Perfect Recipe For Some Autumn Comfort
Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ginger • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 eggs Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside. 3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup. 4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined. 5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy. 6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended. 7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal. 8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.

a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and
I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”
What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”
How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife, Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.
