LIFESTYLE LETTER

Style Is More Than What You Wear When most people think of style, they think of fashion. The clothes we wear. The furniture we choose. The way we decorate our homes. But I've come to believe that style is much more than appearances. It's a reflection of who we are, what we value and how we choose to show up in our community. This month, you'll meet businesses and people who have defined their own style in ways that go far beyond trends. Streetside Brewery is celebrating 10 years of building a style all its own. Not because they followed what everyone else was doing, but because they stayed true to their vision. They've created a place where friends gather, neighbors become regulars and great conversations happen over a locally brewed pint. You'll also discover the incredible work of the Cincy Hat Foundation, an organization proving that style can have purpose. A simple hat has become a symbol of hope, confidence and compassion for individuals facing difficult journeys. It’s a wearable reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a lasting impact. And if you've ever walked through Verbarg's Furniture, you know style isn't about filling a room. It's about creating a home. For generations, they've helped families design spaces where holidays are celebrated, milestones are remembered and everyday moments become lifelong memories. One of my favorite aspects of publishing Anderson City Lifestyle is discovering the unique personalities of every business. Every owner has a story. Every entrepreneur has taken a chance on a dream. Those stories are what make our community unique, and they deserve to be shared. As summer gives way to fall, I hope this issue inspires you to view style in a new light. Support a local business. Go somewhere you've been meaning to visit. Refresh your home. Try a new restaurant. Give back to a cause that matters. Most importantly, celebrate the people who make Anderson such a wonderful place to live. Thank you for continuing to welcome Anderson City Lifestyle into your homes each month. It is truly an honor to tell the stories of this incredible community. See you next month!

HATS OFF TO CINCINNATI

Ted Karras + The Cincy Hat Foundation Build Homes + Hope in the Queen Cit y ARTICLE BY TERA MICHELSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY KOHTA RINCON PHOTOGRAPHY

14

T R E N D SE T T E R | ARTS + CU LT U RE

It all started with a trendy hat. When the Cincy Hat started showing up on the heads of teammates and friends of Bengals Center Ted Karras, everybody wanted to know where they could get one. Two years and $2 million later, the Cincy Hat is a uniform for kindness and a catalyst for community change.

Cincinnati Bengals Center Ted Karras with Colleen Renie + Matt Renie. The three friends lead The Cincy Hat Foundation together.

"Our goal is simple: house as many people as possible and create a sustainable asset for this community that can snowball on itself in perpetuity.” With funds from hat sales, The Cincy Hat Foundation is leading a grassroots movement to provide education and housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) right here in Cincinnati.

INDY ROOTS, CINCY CENTERED

Karras and Matt Renie, friends since they met in eighth grade, started The Cincy Hat Project when Ted spontaneously announced from the Bengals locker room that his hats were a fundraiser. During an interview with a local news station, Ted seized an opportunity to garner support for the Village of Merici. This Indianapolis nonprofit provides housing for adults with IDD and was founded by Colleen Renie, Matt’s mom. “The hats were an overnight sensation!” says Colleen. “It was way beyond my expectations.” For both Ted and Matt, the cause runs deep. Matt’s older brother has IDD.

“Ted was always around our family and saw the issues we have with housing and support,” explains Colleen. “When we built the Village in 2014, he befriended all the residents. It’s personal for him.” “I have two cousins with nonverbal autism,” Ted shares. “I’ve known the villagers at Merici for more than a decade—I’ve worked with them and learned from them. Colleen is a visionary, and I want to continue her legacy in changing how these adults are housed.” As the Cincy Hat Project grew, so did Ted and Matt’s vision for making a community impact. The two friends launched The Cincy Hat Foundation in October 2024. “We started the Foundation knowing we needed to do something great for Cincinnati,” says Executive Director of The Cincy Hat Foundation, Matt Renie. “Our first act was to start a scholarship program for two young women with IDD at the University of Cincinnati.” The Cincy Hat Foundation proudly funds the two full scholarships through the University of CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Cincinnati’s Transition & Access Pathways (TAP) Program, empowering IDD students to engage fully in campus life while building academic, social, career and independent living skills. Two limited-edition hats in Bearcat colorways support and honor the students.

FILLING THE CINCINNATI HOUSING GAP

The Cincy Hat Foundation seeks to support the growing need for IDD housing in the Greater Cincinnati Area. “One of the standout statistics is the need,” shares Emily Kendall, co-founder and president of EmpowerMe Living, a developer, owner and manager of housing for adults with IDD. “There

16

T R E N D SE T T E R | ARTS + CU LT U RE

are over 12,000 adults with IDD who currently live with caregivers over 60+. Loss of caregiver is the main reason people end up in an undesirable housing placement, or worse, on the street,” she adds. With such limited housing opportunities, Cincinnati’s IDD community is at great risk. “There’s a big gap for folks who just need a safe, independent environment—a place to live and thrive in their community,” Matt explains. “Colleen and the Village of Merici just completed their second building, and they’ve done such a great job,” Ted says. “But so many people here in Cincinnati have supported us that it felt past time we built something, infrastructure-wise, in the city that’s been so ferociously behind this mission.”

The Cincy Hat Foundation has officially broken ground on its first independent living facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Madisonville–a milestone made possible by the incredible support of its donors, partners and every individual who’s ever purchased a Cincy Hat. This moment marks the beginning of something much bigger: the foundation’s first step in building long-term, meaningful infrastructure to support adults with IDD across Cincinnati.

BUILDING HOUSING, BUILDING COMMUNITY

Matt Renie + Ted Karras have been friends since they met in 8th grade in Indianapolis.

The Cincy Hat movement has grown far beyond anything they imagined. “People from all 50 states, and even other countries, have reached out,” says Ted. Matt agrees, “This is all an amalgamation of 34,000 generous individuals who have bought hats.” That passion fuels their work ethic, one hat at a time. “When you buy a hat, it’s a donation,” explains Angeline Wellington, PR & Marketing for The Cincy Hat Foundation. “We walk the walk,” Ted insists. “I’ve never taken a cent, and I never will. Every dollar goes straight to the mission. We’re a lean organization, and we’ll stay that way. Our goal is simple: house as many people as possible and create a sustainable asset for this community that can snowball on itself in perpetuity.” “Ted is all in on Cincinnati,” states Matt. “But we can’t do it without the support of the community. It’s a community effort.” Ted’s commitment to the cause shines through his words and actions. “This isn’t about fame,” Ted emphasizes. “It’s about service and love.” What started as a friend giving hats to friends has evolved into neighbors building homes for neighbors. “I am grateful for the opportunity to help in any way I can,” Ted says. FA L L Into Color Verbarg’s Furniture & Design Helps Curate the Perfect Fall Style for Your Home ARTICLE BY MILA NABERHAUS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Seeking the perfect cozy style for your home this fall? Whether you’re looking for accessories or large-scale changes to your space, Verbarg’s Furniture & Design in Amelia is the perfect place to help you prepare your home for fall. Vice President Sheri Mitchell shares her expertise and tips for elevating the design and decor in your home this fall and beyond. One of the simplest ways to incorporate fall trends in your

space is by accessorizing. “I’ve noticed that in the fall people start wanting warmer tones, candles and accessories to cheer up the space once they go inside,” Mitchell explains. By bringing light and color into a room, anyone can make their home feel more welcoming during the colder seasons. When asked what’s currently trending in the showroom at Verbarg’s, Mitchell shares that the customer’s attention is primarily on craftsmanship and living and family room items. “Many people are focusing on American-made products and upholstered items like sofas and chairs right now,” shares Mitchell. Togetherness is a big part of the autumn months, and while it is important to have inviting common areas, the holidays also call for practical choices for hosting and serving comforting meals. Mitchell notes, “Dining rooms and kitchen furniture will start trending now and into the fall because people are thinking about the holidays and entertaining.” Incorporating textures, patterns and colors when refreshing your home design adds inviting ambiance and warmth to your rooms, especially for fall. Now is the time to get comfortable with color! While bold colors and patterns can seem overwhelming, they can also be a tasteful way to liven up a space when used thoughtfully. “I am happy to see more color – and gray becoming a thing of the past,” remarks Mitchell. “I love suggesting color to my customers.” While neutrals are still popular and help make a space feel grounded, Mitchell explains that people have begun opting for warmer-toned neutrals rather than gray-forward palettes. Beige and cream are classics, and brown is a great color for larger pieces to act as focal points in a room. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / A N D E R S O N

“I am happy to see more color – and gray becoming a thing of the past. I love suggesting color to my customers.” “For larger pieces, I’m seeing a greater variety of neutrals, such as beige, cream and brown,” emphasizes Mitchell. Adding richer colors elevates the status of neutrals and completes your space. Mitchell also observes that customers are leaning towards warmer blue tones instead of cooler shades, which are often paired with grays. “We are seeing more prints and color gain popularity,” says Mitchell. “We are still seeing neutrals but in warmer tones paired with greens and gold.” Incorporating colors and prints into your home doesn’t have to mean sacrificing elegance or simplicity. While color can seem intimidating, there’s a helpful trick Mitchell suggests to her uncertain customers. “If they’re hesitant about using color, I suggest adding it in smaller pieces such as chairs, ottomans or pillows,” advises Mitchell. “Use the neutrals in larger pieces such as sofas and sectionals and add color in smaller increments.” For example, if your couch is brown, you could try accessorizing with green pillows. A pop of color or pattern can go a long way toward improving the atmosphere of your space. Mitchell urges people to remember to make their homes their own. While trends can be a helpful starting point for updating your home, it has to feel like you. “I tell my customers to purchase what they love and not what everyone tells them to do; after all, they are living with it,” Mitchell imparts.

Harold + Shirley Verbarg

A LEGACY OF QUALITY & DESIGN

Verbarg’s Furniture & Design was founded by Sheri Mitchell’s father, Harold Verbarg, in Amelia, Ohio, in 1978. Harold began making furniture at the age of 15 and later started selling it. He eventually became the president of a local furniture store before deciding to open his own shop. His main goal was to offer the best quality and design for a fair price. Sheri grew up in the industry, working alongside her dad on odd jobs at Verbarg’s until she was hired full-time in 1987 after also working in the fashion design industry. Her mother, Shirley Verbarg, is now the primary owner, with Sheri’s sister, Debbie Gilligan, serving as President. VerbargsFurniture.com

Streetside Brewery Turns Ten

Streetside Production Manager, Steve Schmidt.

It started, like most good ideas do, with a conversation and a drink. Gathered at the University of Dayton’s reunion weekend, Kathie, Brian and their son Garrett Hickey began toying with the idea of opening a taproom. What started as a fun ‘what-if’ quickly evolved when Garrett, inspired by homebrewing with Brian, drafted a business plan and enrolled in brewing school. Before they knew it, a brick building with red signage marked a new chapter for both the Hickey family and Cincinnati: Streetside Brewery was born on Eastern Avenue. A decade later, that same building is still packed and still a thriving family business. Streetside Brewery celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and if you ask the Hickeys what they’re most proud of, it isn’t the medals and accolades (though there are plenty). “Our goal was to open a place we could build a community around,” explains Streetside Managing Brewer and Part-Owner, Garrett Hickey. “We’ve done that and more.” They overcame new business challenges like keeping up with demand and setbacks they couldn’t predict, like the pandemic, tariff swings and shortages in aluminum, grain and staffing. What kept Streetside standing was the community who showed up for them. “Our customers are the best! During COVID, they really stepped up their beer game and kept us busy and in business,” shares Streetside Founder Brian Hickey. “We have customers of all ages and interests, which makes for a fun crowd.” Regulars quickly became friends, and the brewery became a local hub. The Hickeys watched their dream of a community gathering space unfold under the lights of their taproom through happy hours, a long-awaited Bengals playoff run CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . (including receiving a game ball) and even a wedding. Streetside is now a St. Patrick’s Day staple, a cheer station on the Flying Pig course and a favored patio on sunny days. And they haven’t hesitated to give back to the community that has been there for them. “Their support never feels transactional,” says Matt Yauch, member of the Columbia Tusculum Community Council. “They show up because they care about the neighborhood and its people.” And show up, they do. They’re frequent collaborators with neighbors like Delwood and donate their venue for community planning meetings and cleanups. You’ll also find them pouring beer for the Tusculum Street Fest and giving to Riverview East Academy and the Carnegie Center of Columbia Tusculum. Streetside is a good neighbor in every sense of the word. As deeply rooted in the local community as they are, Streetside has also been recognized on a national stage. Garrett nods to Streetside’s World Beer Cup, Great American Beer Fest and Festival of Barrel Aged Beer medals as moments of pride. The prestigious brewing competitions draw entries from thousands of CONTINUED >

breweries across the United States, and the awards signal impressive quality and recognition from industry peers. Streetside’s loyal customers have ensured that momentum didn’t stay confined to competitions. The brewery is approaching landmark milestones this fall with its millionth can packaged and 1,000th batch brewed, a celebratory occasion for the production team. Self-distribution has allowed Streetside’s beer to travel to other cities and states, a challenging yet rewarding endeavor that has made these milestones possible. Streetside resonates with customers and industry pros alike, and a look at both the range of beer and eye-catching branding points to why. “Streetside is a rare case where variety isn’t antithetical to the branding system; it is the system itself,” Garrett tells us. The vibrant, ever-evolving cans are standouts on crowded shelves featuring eagles and wheat. Marked with their iconic red “S” logo, the can is a blank canvas for cartoon monsters, bright flowers and even pet photos. “Tonally, the wry humor, the heartfelt sincerity, the work ethic and ideals, cultural references… those are all things you’ll find in the people under this roof,” shares Garrett. Rather than a ‘canned’ brand identity, the Hickeys create something their staff and customers see themselves in. It’s an authenticity that’s easy to spot and impossible to replicate.

28

H AP PY H OU R | L I FE + C U LT U RE

The customers play a part in keeping it real. The Hickeys acknowledge their patrons’ evolving palettes and grow alongside them, moving from kettle sours and New England IPAs toward bitter IPAs, English-style ales and easy-drinking lagers. However, there are fan favorites. “Suh Bruh and Raspberry Beret,” Streetside Founder Kathie Hickey notes. “Those are our OG, impactful and well-known beers.” While beloved brews will carry into the next decade, this month, Streetside is celebrating the one behind it. The celebration kicks off Sept. 25 at 3 p.m. with DJ CherryBomb, specialty kegs and beer releases, followed by live music from Streetside favorite Jonathan Cody at 6 p.m. Saturday brings Twin Sons Band and DJ Cat Scratch to the stage, plus food from Hi-Mark, El Cardenal Taqueria and Swirley’s Soft Serve. Once festivities come to an end, Streetside won’t be slowing down. Garrett hints at a couple of barrel-aged releases and a collaboration he’s excited about, while Brian teases new partnerships in the months ahead, including a first-time partnership around Thanksgiving. It’s clear Streetside’s success has grown to heights the Hickeys never expected from that first conversation, but the vision behind it hasn’t changed: good connections, great beer and even better people. “We wouldn’t be here without the fantastic people who walk through our doors,” Kathie emphasizes. “We are humbled by the sheer amount of love that we get from our customers, near and far.” StreetsideBrewery.com

A Look Behind the Lens of Photographer Kohta Rincon

THE ART OF A PORTRAIT

ARTICLE BY TERA MICHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KOHTA RINCON PHOTOGRAPHY

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, local photographer Kohta Rincon is surrounded by it. The world looks lovely from behind her lens. Kohta’s unique style matches her personality: warm, vibrant and compelling. Her artistic portraits tell a story, skillfully capturing a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional moment. “I see myself as an art-focused photographer,” Kohta shares. “I break pretty much every posing rule in the book till I see what looks best.” Photography comes naturally to Kohta, a self-taught artist motivated by the challenge of capturing genuine expressions in images that evoke emotion. “I’m just motivated to get some good pictures,” she shrugs. Kohta’s good pictures start with her warmth. She has a way of connecting with people and bringing out their best in a photograph. Each session is preempted with a discovery call, scheduled well before picture day, so she and her clients are on the same page when the camera comes out. “Even if we’ve just met, by the time we’re shooting, we’re friends,” she says. “That comfort level comes quickly and opens the opportunity to capture an authentic moment.”

Kohta’s photography business, Kohta Rincon Photography, was born of a relationship with a horse. A farmer on the east side of Cincinnati, she has enjoyed horses since her childhood. The speckled coat and tolerant spirit of Jazz, her Arabian rescue, led Kohta to put a unicorn horn on her head and do fantasy photo sessions with kids in princess wear. “It’s an unlikely story to have your horse ownership turn you into a photographer,” she laughs. “It was like Jazz was pushing me into the business.” Brand and business, beauty and boudoir, equestrians and seniors—Kohta is a master at putting people at ease, getting the best angle and capturing connections between people and their loved ones (especially four-legged family members). Contact Kohta for your own discovery call and a visit to her Old Milford studio for an authentic portrait experience. INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
