Hello friends,

Once upon a time, a baby girl was born into a family with four boys who were older than her by 6 - 12 years. She was adored, cherished and loved completely. While they didn't play with her much growing up, the brothers were always sweet and attentive, inviting her to climb up on their laps or finishing her lima beans at dinner. She would press her face against the living room picture window, watching for them to return home from college and bask in their warmth and energy. Now, with one lost to AIDS, three brothers continue to surround their baby sister with unconditional love and support. I'm the luckiest girl in the world!

This month, we salute the men in our lives and honor those who celebrate Father's Day.

Enjoy our annual MEN'S issue, chock full of amazing guys and the stories that interest them.

All my best,

June 2026

SINATRA, BOURBON AND ME

PODCAST ALERT: FRANKLY DRINKING WITH FRIENDS

For years, I’ve been an enthusiastic fan of bourbon and Frank Sinatra. In 2024, I launched Frankly Drinking With Friends, a podcast toasting these two American classics.

So, what’s the story? Our family moved to Alpharetta when I was a kid. Back then, the nearest movie theaters were in Roswell, and only pickup trucks seemed to travel north of Holcomb Bridge on 400. After graduating from Milton, I earned a history degree at the University of Georgia and later built a career in executive speechwriting.

My Sinatra fandom was sparked by a Rolling Stone review of 1990’s The Capitol Years, a three-CD retrospective. Ol’ Blue Eyes soon found his place in a college music collection heavy on U2,

REM and The Beatles, and I found myself listening to Sinatra while relaxing, ironing or prepping for a night on the town.

From the start, I’ve been captivated by Sinatra’s peerless vocals, the music’s hard-swinging swagger and the elevated artistry of the songwriting. There’s something about this mid-century pop music—written, arranged and performed by the very best—that really appeals to me. These are recordings with style and class, brimming with post-war optimism.

My taste for bourbon came later. In college, sad to say, my drinking consisted mostly of wine coolers, cheap beer and rum and Cokes, made with a bottle of Bacardi 151 socked away in my Russell Hall dresser.

At 21, I bought my first whiskey—a pocket bottle of Jack Daniel’s—for an all-night meeting of UGA’s storied debate club, The Demosthenian Literary Society. A year later, visiting my future wife’s family in Louisville, I ordered my first bourbon at Churchill Downs. Seemed like the right call at the home of the Kentucky Derby.

Around 2008, my friends and I embraced tasty brown liquor and never looked back. Early on, I kept a bottle or two in the pantry next to the cereal. The bottles have since multiplied and moved to the basement.

When I decided to start Frankly Drinking With Friends, I knew Sinatra’s catalog and story. With bourbon, I was just a longtime fan. I needed a cohost with serious bourbon chops. Fate (and Google) led me to Chris Reynolds, an Atlanta businessman who teaches whiskey-tasting classes for fun.

Two weeks after meeting, we recorded our first episode with music from Sinatra’s Capitol Records career and pours from Frank’s favorite brand, Jack Daniel’s. (He was buried with a bottle.)

Two years later, we’re cohosts and friends. Once a month, we record two shows in an evening. I choose the music; Chris picks the pours. Three tunes and three tastings per episode. (These are small pours, folks!)

To date, we’ve released 30 episodes and attracted listeners from around the globe. We keep things light and fun, which people seem to appreciate. To be sure, we are enjoying ourselves. And why not? To my mind, few things in life can top friends sharing the sublime delights of curious conversation, fine drink and great music.

The Sinatra and bourbon podcast, Frankly Drinking With Friends, is free and available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other platforms.

HIKE, SAUNA,

BEEF, REPEAT

Trailborn believes guests don’t have to rough it to explore the great outdoors. With boutique hotel vibes and resort-level amenities, the brand is a contender, with outposts in Mendocino, California; Wrightsville Beach; Williams, Arizona; and soon, Jackson Hole. Nearby, Trailborn Highlands (North Carolina) sits on 4.5 wooded acres, walking distance from the charming downtown for shopping and dining, close to waterfalls and hiking and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains.

For a weekend with the guys, book dinners at Highlands Supper Club at Trailborn, a historic log cabin with fireplaces, indoor and outdoor dining and a menu for the most passionate meat lover. Arrive early for Trailborn Après Hour and grab a signature Old Fashioned from the bar and mix and mingle around the outdoor (wood) fire pit. When we visited, a group of guys were decamped in the private dining room. The overall mood was convivial and celebratory, the meal was satisfying and notably exceptional.

Executive chef Aaron Kulzer is at the helm and extols the virtues of the nearby family farm from which his beef is sourced. “This summer, I’m excited about a beautiful ribeye from Brasstown Beef in nearby Franklin, NC.  The quality is outstanding and it keeps my ingredients close to home. I’m going to chargrill it and plate it with smoked-garlic mashed potatoes, bright chimichurri and honey-roasted carrots.”

Be sure to start your meal with the biscuits served with whipped local honey butter and if you’re lucky, your server will pack a few for a snack later. The Beef TarTare (with roasted bone marrow mousse) or High County Oysters (grilled with red Chile butter) were our favorite apps. Entrees are red meat-forward with trout, salmon and a lion’s mane mushroom main rounding things out.

There are a handful of great hikes within a 30-minute scenic drive from Trailborn in the Nantahala National Forest. Our favorite was Glen Falls, a 2.4 mile out and back moderate hike with an upper and lower waterfall, overlooks and just enough steep, rutty climbs to add a challenge. Both the Glen Falls and Chinquapin Mountain Trails start from the same parking area, so hit them both for a more strenuous workout.

Back at Trailborn, reserve an hour to yourselves at the Nordic Spa featuring a private wood-fired sauna, cold spritz, fire pit and refreshments.

The lobby lounge, plus the back patio and fire pit, provide spots to gather, sip and share stories. A small curated market, cooler bags, bikes and guided excursions are all available for your trip. Dogs welcomed. Men, too.

Joe Gransden brings his Tony Bennett tribute to Marietta.

“I

LOVE ENTERTAINING PEOPLE; I STRIVE TO MAKE THEM FEEL GOOD, AND THEY MAKE ME FEEL WONDERFUL. TO EXPLAIN IT SIMPLY, I LIKE WHAT I DO, AND MY AMBITION IS TO GET BETTER AS I GET OLDER. THAT’S REALLY WHAT I’M ALL ABOUT.”

TONY BENNETT

To celebrate the late great Tony Bennett’s 100th birthday, Atlanta’s Joe Gransden has produced a musical tribute that will open at Lincoln Center in August. Lucky for us, the show comes to The Strand Theatre on Marietta Square on August 14. Joe and his 9-piece Big Band will swing through the life and career of Tony Bennett, one of the greatest performers ever of the American Songbook.

“Tony Bennett’s tone, phrasing and feel were second to none,” says Joe.

“He can really sell a song and tell the story so well. It’s such a pleasure to be influenced by his music.”

Songs such as “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Because of You,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” and  “When Joanna Loved Me” are just a few favorites on the program.

Joe has performed worldwide and released 19 CDs under his own name. Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Joe’s voice is silky smooth.

“Music has been a part of my life as far back as I can remember,” reflects Joe. “I can remember practicing with my father, and eventually he took me along to sit in at jam sessions. Early on, I developed a respect for individuals like my father, whose lives revolved around music. While still in high school, I knew that music was the life I would choose.”

Now, he celebrates his musical hero, Tony Bennett. Lead trombone player, Wes Funderburk, wrote all the arrangements for this show, fresh new takes on classic songs. "Wes took into account all the nuances of my band and came up with a great show."

The Joe Gransden Big Band stays booked and is one of the busiest groups on the jazz scene. Originally formed in 2009, Joe and the guys have continued to build momentum and are performing numerous shows around the country. “The Big Band truly has its own sound and really swings,” says Joe. It’s such a pleasure to front a band of top musicians that can interpret Wes’s arrangements perfectly! These guys are the best!”

ELEGANCE ON THE GULF

WHERE SERENITY MEETS THE THRILL OF THE CATCH.

Once again, Newman-Dailey Properties delivered with 3112 Sanctuary by the Sea in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, a spectacular four-bedroom condo that really captures the essence of refined beach living. As one of their many luxury rental properties, it blended elevated design with sweeping, panoramic views, creating the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable stay.

Inside the condo, the decor is a sophisticated take on contemporary French country style, with a hint of contemporary and subtle beach-inspired accents. The palette blends warm neutrals with organic textures that evoke both European charm and seaside serenity. Every detail has been

considered to create a space that feels elevated, yet comfortable, suited for quiet mornings and effortless entertaining.

Just beyond the main living space, expansive doors open to a generous balcony that serves as a true extension of the home. From here, panoramic views stretch across a tropical oasis below, with two sparkling pools, a tranquil hot tub and the endless ocean horizon. “Sanctuary by the Sea residential vacation rentals offer a unique way to experience 30A like a local. Guests are welcomed into a one-of-a-kind luxury residence overlooking one of the area’s rare coastal dune lakes,” says Tracy Louthain, marketing director for NewmanDailey Resort Properties. “The coastal dune lakes are not only scenic but also offer a wealth of recreational activities. In addition, guests enjoy access to all the property amenities, including two pools, hot tubs, fire pit, fitness center and more. And while you feel tucked away in a pristine, quiet setting, you are just minutes from Grayton Beach, WaterColor and Seaside.”

The unit’s media room is a stand-out, centered around an oversized, floorlevel sofa, seating up to ten guests to stretch out in complete comfort.

The kitchen is equally impressive, outfitted with top-of-the-line Viking appliances. My guests and I enjoyed the beautifully appointed kitchen and dining area, where we prepared the fresh fish we caught during our charter fishing excursion. The team at Newman-Dailey thoughtfully arranged a private outing for us just minutes away, departing from Grayton Beach.

Early one morning, we all headed out in our sporty 50 SPF long-sleeve t-shirts courtesy of Crupi Legacy Fishing and met Captain Phil and Donna of Captain Phil’s Charters. We launched directly from the shore, heading out into the Gulf for several unforgettable hours on the water.

As a first-time angler, I was thrilled to land two fish on my very first attempt. Others each contributed by catching impressive grouper, which we were able to eat that evening and also keep for a future meal. By the end of the excursion, my friends and I returned to the condo with around 15 pounds of freshly caught grouper and red snapper, ready to be transformed into a memorable meal.

From the excitement of a memorable fishing charter to the unhurried pace of a few relaxing days on the beach, everything naturally flowed into the comfort of the condo, complete with a few wellearned mojitos along the way. A clear commitment to design excellence is evident throughout the residence, where statement lighting, custom upholstery and carefully curated artwork come together in a cohesive, intentional and undeniably sophisticated aesthetic. Every detail reflects a designer-level finish, making it immediately clear why Unit 3112 is proudly featured as one of Newman-Dailey’s luxury properties.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

Nice? Is Whiskey On Ice

In speaking to Whiskey lovers (most happen to be men, but do accept me in their brethren as a fellow enthusiast, writer, and educator), I’ve learned a great many opinions on how to drink Whiskey. Specifically, preferences on adding water and ice vary greatly.

A brand ambassador that I had the privilege of listening to recently said the obvious: both dilution and temperature change when you add ice, so if you are going to add something, a little water is best. I personally prefer to use a water dropper, so I can add one drop at a time until I get to the desired taste.

THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY YOUR WHISKEY: ON THE ROCKS, ROCK, NEAT, OR WITH WATER

HERE ARE THE DIFFERENCES:

Rocks: Provides the highest rate of dilution as a lot of ice melts quickly. If you are drinking a barrel proof Whiskey, it kind of defeats the purpose as the distiller didn’t add water as they do in every other type of finished Whiskey.

On the Rock: The single rock, cube, or sphere is the slowest to melt and thought to be the most aesthetic. It’s nice if you want to stretch out your tasting. I often order on the rock if I want my drink to last longer.

Neat: This is the way single malt Scotch is served at a tasting event, in a branded Glencairn or Neat glass so that proper nosing for aromas can be achievedand a dram of Scotch, smaller than an ounce, fits in them perfectly.

Water: As I mentioned above, quoting the brand ambassador, a little water is better for a fine Whiskey over any kind of ice. Often, if ordered with water, the water is served in a separate vessel on the side so you can add in as much as you want.

Quoting another expert on the subject, Richard Paterson of The Dalmore famously and enthusiastically demonstrates in his Scotch classes how to drink single malt Scotch Whiskey: Paterson fills a lowball glass to the rim with ice, adds Scotch and then ceremoniously throws it over his shoulder onto the carpet of the classroom –because that much ice makes the drink worthless. One more quote, never “add green tea or milk to Whiskey. You can add a little water, but not a lot of ice.”

Ultimately, the reason we add ice can be for aesthetics, to stretch out the time spent on one glass, for cooling, and for dilution. However, the number one reason enthusiasts add water is … drumroll please … because adding a little water actually opens up a Whiskey to show more aromas and flavors.

DIOR’S

VISION COMES TO THE SOUTHEAST

The Savannah College of Art and Design is thrilled to announce  Dior: Crafting Fashion now open at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film.

Curated by Hélène Starkman - exhibition curator for Christian Dior Couture - and organized by Rafael Brauer Gomes, creative director of SCAD FASH museums,  Dior: Crafting Fashion  has been created exclusively by Christian Dior Couture in collaboration with the university and will be the first museum presentation of the House of Dior in the Southeastern United States.

Designed to unfold over seven thematic sections, the exhibition brings together a series of narratives that shine a contemporary light on the House of Dior’s heritage. Each section offers a different perspective on how this heritage is formed, passed on and transformed, while never losing sight of the original vision. These sections include creations by designers from Christian Dior to Jonathan Anderson; toiles that speak to the first masterful contributions of the  petites mains ; expressive gardens;  Lady Dior handbags revisited by American artists; and looks from dramatic fashion shows and red carpet events, where style and spectacle meet.

Christian Dior initially dreamed of becoming an architect before running an art gallery and ultimately becoming a couturier, originating a body of work that embodies the connection between memory and creation. Dior’s early inspirations are the focal point of this ensemble of more than 100 historic pieces, with some presented for the first time. The exhibition brings into focus an identity shaped by time, precise craftsmanship and a succession of creative visions that have always celebrated the intuition of the House’s founding designer. Running throughout the exhibition, the threads of transmission, imagination and expertise weave a thoughtful framework for understanding the world of Dior.

Dior: Crafting Fashion will be on view at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film through August 23, 2026. ScadFash.org
