Have you seen the latest fitness trends? Me neither. I tend to stick to the tried and true. Walking or biking for an hour each day, drinking plenty of water, eating a plant-based diet and getting eight hours of sleep. Usually. Well, I try. Finding a routine that fits your lifestyle is the number one consideration in charting out a wellness path. Purchasing a monthly pass for a yoga studio that’s just a bit too far away is a recipe for disaster. And, I’m speaking from experience. CrossFit was my life 10 years ago. The community, the proximity of the gym to my house and the competitive nature all led to my success. I’d never been more fit and even won a few competitions. But, a shoulder injury sidelined me (I don’t blame the workout, I blame myself for pushing things a bit too far). Now, I just try to stay strong and limber to keep up with my grandson, paddle Mendocino's Big River in an outrigger canoe (pictured with my husband, Jim), sail Little Traverse Bay or ski Park City. Whatever your wellness routine is, we applaud you. And, in this issue, we introduce you to a few of our community’s wellness warriors with tips for boosting metabolism and mood alike. Fly fishing appeals to die-hard competitors and also to the yogis on their solitary journey towards zen. From Alpharetta, in a little over an hour, we can be wading the Toccoa River or floating the Chattahoochee in pursuit of trout, flies considered and fly rods rigged. Attitude adjustment underway. “Fly fishing has so many layers,” says Jennifer Gilbert of Alpharetta. “Being in nature is healing, there is always something new to learn to advance my fly fishing practice, and all of the people I have met along the way who enjoy fly fishing are amazing.” Jennifer is a board member of Georgia Women Fly Fishing (GWFF), an award-winning group of anglers passionate about fly fishing, friendship, fun and community. Jennifer learned the basics from a friend of her husband’s but wanted to hone her skills independently so she joined GWFF. The club CONTINUED >

meets the second Tuesday of the month (virtually) with planned fishing outings the following Saturday. “I love the camaraderie. We celebrate each other and are noncompetitive. It’s a great group to learn with and enjoy fishing adventures.” She and her husband Jeff now fish together along with their boys, Clayton and Blaine. “I am so grateful we can share this awesome hobby together. We always learn something new when we are fishing,” she says. “We were able to charter a fishing boat up in Blue Ridge in November and caught about 50 trout between us!” Jennifer is a nurse in Canton at Heart and Vascular Care. She is also a founding member of Reeling in Serenity, a nonprofit that helps bring fly fishing to men and women in recovery from substance abuse.

WHAT’S HOT The numbers are in, and a clear winner has been declared. Even better, it’s unanimous. Both the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and The Aesthetic Society have declared that liposuction remains the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the world. In 2022, there were more than 2.3 million liposuction procedures performed across the globe, a 21.1% increase over 2021, according to the latest numbers from ISAPS. ASPS reported that there were 325,669 liposuction procedures performed in the US in 2022, up 23% from 2019. The Aesthetic Society reported that there were 405,328 liposuction procedures performed in 2022. Yes, this is down 12% from 2021, but liposuction still experienced a larger surge than the other surgical procedures during the pandemic, jumping 85% over 2019 levels, compared with a 74% increase for abdominoplasty and a 39% increase for breast augmentations. While down from 2021, liposuction was still 63% above its pre-pandemic level in 2022, The Aesthetic Society reports. There’s a simple reason that liposuction continues to reign supreme: it works. Liposuction also provides close-toinstant results and instant gratification (a big selling point for impatient millennials). The unwanted fat is sucked out for a slimmer appearance. Yes, this can be at the expense of

some downtime (think swelling and redness), and it doesn’t affect muscles or skin quality, but most patients find liposuction to be worth it. I foresee an even longer reign for this highly effective and safe plastic surgery procedure. WHAT’S NOT Sure, some of us gave up carbs and upped our workout game during the COVID-19 lockdown period, but a lot more folks turned to stress eating and used the lack of access to a gym as an excuse to Netflix and chill. In fact, 39% of people gained weight during the pandemic, with weight gain defined as more than the normal fluctuation of 2.5 pounds. About 27% of people gained less than 12.5 pounds, and about 10% gained more than 12.5 pounds, with 2% gaining more than 27.5 pounds, according to a study from Epic Research. Thanks to the widespread use of Ozempic/Wegovy (semaglutide) or Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight loss (and hopefully adherence to a healthy diet, regular exercise) and maybe even liposuction or energy-based fat reduction, most people have shed their COVID 15. Now, some people have developed unwanted side effects from rapid weight loss in their cheeks. “Ozempic face” refers to withdrawn, sucked-in cheeks, and “Ozempic butt” is the media’s name for deflated, sagging, or wrinkled buttock cheeks. Such side effects are known to follow rapid and massive weight loss. Expect to see more patients looking for solutions to put the volume back in their deflated cheeks. Chocolate Chip Hemp Seed Banana Bread

Healthy Breakfast Bread IN G R E D I E N T S • Nonstick cooking spray • 4 very ripe, medium-sized bananas • 6 tbsps unsalted butter, melted • 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 cup light brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 cup whole wheat flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt • 1 cup dark chocolate chips • 3/4 cup lightly toasted, chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds (optional) • 3/4 cup hemp seed

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat over to 350 degrees. Lightly grease 2 loaf pans with non-stick spray. 2. In an oversized bowl thoroughly mash bananas completely using a fork. Whisk in melted butter, yogurt, brown sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well combined. 3. In a separate, medium-sized bowl, whisk both the all-purpose and whole wheat flour, baking soda, hemp seed, and salt to combine. Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and stir to combine, scraping the sides of the bowl to make sure the mixture is combined well. 4. Gently stir in the chocolate chips until combined, add nuts and stir until combined. 5. Transfer loaf pans to the oven and bake until the edges of the loaf start to pull away from the edge of the pan, about 60-70 minutes. Insert a tester into the center of the bread. It should come out clean with just a few moist crumbs attached. 6. Remove from oven, set on wire racks and cool before removing from the loaf pan.

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.

Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows to you consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
