Hello friends,

Isn't summer the best? On the first day of summer vacation last month, my neighborhood was flooded with tweens trying to squeeze every moment out of their new-found freedom. Sporting short shorts and ponytails, the girls appeared confident and in the midst of the time of their lives. The boys, well, seemed awkward and goofy.  Some will find their footing this summer and hopefully, they all will feel the lightness and laughter of summer this month.

Everyone needs a summer vacation, staying up late watching the stars pop out and indulging in things that make us feel good. I'm thinking, more ice cream, more time on the water fishing or paddling and more time with old friends sharing a meal.

Lake Windward Elementary School  Science Olympiad Team beat over 60 teams across Georgia to become the Elementary Science Olympiad State Champions for the second consecutive year at Kennesaw State University, held in May. Alpharetta Elementary School enjoyed many presenters during their annual Career Day, especially members of the Drug Enforcement Administration, who arrived and departed via helicopter. From horse shows and rodeos to concerts and symphonies, the Equestrian Center is the heart of Wills Park, hosting a variety of events throughout the year. We sat down with Morgan Rogers, Alpharetta’s Director of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Services to find out what summer looks like at the Wills Park Equestrian Center.

Q: WHAT CHANGES WILL OUR READERS SEE AT THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER THIS MONTH?

A: Readers will see vendor tents, concessions, and spectator areas for some of our large nationally rated horse shows. These shows bring some of the top exhibitors and horses from around the country.

Q: WHAT EVENTS ARE BEING HOSTED IN JULY AND AUGUST THAT READERS COULD ENJOY AND WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THEY COME?

A: Each weekend we will have a national or local rated horse show at the park. These horse shows are primarily the hunter/jumper discipline. The nationally rated United States Equestrian Federation horse shows will have Grand Prix show jumping each week. Spectators are welcome, so bring a blanket and enjoy Wills Park, Alpharetta’s downtown park.

Pansies in 2009,” says Maria. “To date, we have raised over $4 million in support of curing pancreatic cancer.” The mission of Purple Pansies is to give immediate support to families fighting pancreatic cancer, to grant annual scholarships to young adults whose guardian or parents have been impacted, and to fund research and clinical trials to fight the disease. Maria’s charity efforts echo through her every move as she weaves through the restaurant; leaving a little bit of her heart with every guest, touching them with her benevolence and inspiring them through her actions and words. “I do my best to be a good role model for my children and my community,” says Maria. Service and sisterhood are the cornerstones of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Phi Phi Omega Chapter. These guiding principles were on full display as two dozen members volunteered at the second annual Spring Recycling Event at the Innovation Academy in Alpharetta.

As part of the sorority’s international program initiative, Enhance Our Environment, the goal was to reduce the volume of waste headed to our local dump sites. Area residents dropped off papers and magazines for shredding and donated gently used shoes and clothing. Fifty-one cars drove through to donate:

• 248 pairs of shoes

• 75 bags/boxes of clothing and shoes (approximately 2,250 items)

• 2,500 pounds of paper that was shredded

The partners were RAM Shredding, Soles4Souls and Community Assistance Center (CAC).
