Hello friends,

I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make it more rich and beautiful. Our sisters, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this roleconnecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to BuckHaven and beyond.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

Habitat for Humanity North Central Georgia is powered by volunteers, and their Women Build events provide the opportunity for women to take a proactive step in serving their communities. Recently, a group of students from Alpharetta volunteered and we asked about their experience.

Habitat for Humanity gave me an opportunity to become involved in a community that focuses on helping people by providing them with a home. The work that I have done with Habitat was very enjoyable because of the welcoming atmosphere. A lot of the volunteers come from different backgrounds and also different work fields. They provided me with a lot of insight that expands further than just the work Habitat for Humanity does. I am very proud of the work my peers and I contributed because we could see how happy people were with their new homes. The experience gained from working with Habitat is one of a kind.

I am proud to be a part of such a formidable organization that is Habitat for Humanity. While I may be a new member, the experiences it has given me hold so much significance. From advocating for low-income housing at the GA Capitol to learning the basics of landscaping, I realized how much of an impact I can make on this world

as an individual. As women, we are often told that we’re not “strong enough” to do certain things in workplaces, but being in the women-dominated group that is my school’s Habitat for Humanity chapter, I am forever thankful. Not only did I learn about the significant changes I can make as an individual, but also what it means to be a part of a group with amazing young women working towards sparking change and creating beautiful things.

Being a part of Habitat for Humanity has been an incredibly fulfilling and heartfelt experience for me. Habitat has given me countless opportunities to work towards creating change and advocating for affordable housing. The highlight of my time with Habitat was undoubtedly Housing Day, where I had the chance to speak out on behalf of those who are victims of our present housing crisis at the Georgia Capitol. Moreover, as the vice president of my school club, Habitat has taught me important leadership skills that I’ll carry with me throughout my life. At Habitat’s build days, meeting local families from Alpharetta who have been impacted by our work is an incredibly moving experience, and it motivates me to continue to give back. Each weed I pull, each wall I paint, and each nail I hammer has been a small step in changing someone’s life. The work Habitat does is truly remarkable, and I am beyond proud to be a part of this life-changing organization.

Creating a safe space for women is so important, and Habitat for Humanity strives to do just that with their women-led projects. Not only are the projects and fundraisers empowering for those participating, but also the end result with affordable housing and seminars gives people a new start and a great foundation. Being a part of such a cause is fulfilling, within and without! It feels amazing to be able to connect with women for the same cause, and working for the fundraisers and the projects creates a special bond and atmosphere.

As an organization, Habitat for Humanity values their volunteers’ time a lot and makes their work feel valued, which helps retain regular volunteers. I appreciate Habitat for Humanity for all of the opportunities and support!

Metropolitan Ballet Theatre Alpharetta

Metropolitan Ballet Theatre (MBT), a pre-professional ballet school, was established in 1998 by Maniya Barredo. After a long career with celebrated national and international ballet companies, culminating in two decades as prima ballerina of the Atlanta Ballet, Ms. Barredo sought to pass her knowledge and love of classical ballet to future generations of dancers. She continues her role as MBT’s artistic director and lead instructor.

Located in Alpharetta, MBT is a studio whose mission is to develop young dancers in the art of classical ballet in an atmosphere of self-competition and inner growth, nurtured with love and mutual respect. The studio specializes in training for children as young as 4, with advanced levels of training for dedicated students of all ages. Dancers seeking to immerse themselves further can enroll in MBT’s conservatory, which offers additional ballet classes during the day. MBT graduates have received offers from professional programs and launched successful careers with top companies, including Joffrey Ballet Chicago, Houston Ballet, Nashville Ballet, Orlando Ballet, St. Louis Ballet, and Bejart Ballet in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The studio produces multiple public performances each year, giving students opportunities to experience the hard work and collaboration required for professional-level theatrical ballet. MBT’s annual production of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, is a highlight for the dancers and a beloved tradition for families in the North Fulton community. In conjunction with their

Nutcracker performances, MBT hosts Sugarplum Storytime, a family-friendly event where theatre patrons can meet the dancers in costume from Land of the Sweets and hear the magical story of The Nutcracker. Community outreach is also a vital part of Metropolitan Ballet Theatre’s mission. Such outreach includes a presence at Fulton County holiday events and offering free performances at local assisted living homes.

MBT is thrilled to announce its Spring 2023 performances of Coppélia. This enchanting love story is memorable for music, as well as dancing.  Coppélia is ballet’s great comedy. It tells the story of lovely Swanhilda, a girl who pretends to be a doll to regain the affection of Franz, her sweetheart. Set to music by Leo Delibes, the entire family will be captivated by the betrothed Swanhilda and Franz, a mysterious toy-maker named Dr. Coppélius, life-size dancing dolls, and the “happily forever wedding celebration.”

In addition to the regular season, MBT offers three weeks of Summer Intensive in June.  Students 8 years old and older are invited to train with world-renowned master teachers, including their own Maniya Barredo, MBT alumnus Luis Gonzalez, and famed dancer and longtime artistic director of Atlanta Ballet, Robert Barnett. MBT also offers Master Classes in July to continue opportunities for dancers to strengthen and perfect their artistry.

Having a girl-tribe is important and, like most, I didn’t learn this until I reached my 30s.

When we are young, we’re taught “friends come and go” and to “focus on your goals, not relationships.” Well, that’s what I did. I didn’t place any emphasis on building or maintaining friendships, I built businesses, brands, and eventually, a family. But, I was left with no girl-crew.

I must say, I am fortunate to have always been surrounded by women. My mom, sister, cousins, aunts, and other family members were never far away and there is an underlying comfort in knowing that they will always be around. However, we take those primary relationships for granted and categorize them as “constants.” Our constants provide us a sense of security, but as we grow older, we learn that we must create our own families and girl-tribes.

When I moved to Georgia, I was in my twenties and I didn’t travel with my constants. I was alone and had to learn to build my family and girl-crew from scratch. I found myself going to brunch, lunch and movies alone (or with my son in tow).

I decided it was necessary to start cultivating more and more friendships. To do that, I became active in my community. I decided to research multiple Facebook mom groups that I ultimately joined and nestled into. After a couple of years, I decided to start my own group, Alpharetta Housewives. This was a way for other women to find their identity outside of the home while bonding with others.

It’s time! Dive in and become more active within your community. It will allow you to branch out of your comfort zone and will open you up to cultivating meaningful friendships

and relationships. Having your girl group also aids in building a better sense of self. That’s what mom always said, right? “Get out, meet new people and experience new things.” Ok, mom, I hear ya!

We are fortunate to live in a community that provides opportunities to meet other amazing, influential and powerful women.

I found myself in downtown Alpharetta getting my nails done one Saturday morning at Hammond Nails and casually began chatting with a woman next to me. At the end of that conversation, we exchanged numbers. I invited her to an event that I was co-hosting and we quickly became gal-pals. Later that day, I walked into Ceviche and sat at the bar, I noticed a prompt on my phone from my instagram account. It read, “I see you.” I started to look around and saw one of the ladies from my group. It wasn’t until then that we met. We chatted, laughed and had lunch together and it was the start of an amazing friendship.

I now find that being involved with a group of women who support and lean on each other is an important part of who I am and what I love. It all starts with a conversation, and now there is a forum for dialogue with Alpharetta Housewives.

Let’s change the trending adage, “You can’t sit with us” to “You CAN sit with us!”

Feel free to pull up a chair and scoot up to our table. We promise good laughs, amazing stories and bonds that will last a lifetime. We frequently attend VIP and private movie screenings, fashion shows, brunch, lunch and rooftop mixers. You name it and we are there! Follow us and be social!

Sankranti is an Indian fine dining restaurant and banquet hall in Johns Creek. The name Sankranti (pronounced  sum-kraanthi ) translates to “positive change” in Sanskrit and is derived from the traditional three-day Indian harvest festival that shares its name. Each January during Sankranti, family, friends, and neighbors gather to enjoy abundant meals and spend quality time together, much like Thanksgiving in the United States. July Moon Bakery & Café, an award-winning dessert shop in Alpharetta and a top bubble tea shop in North Atlanta, recently turned one. They take pride in being a new café concept featuring bánh mì (Vietnamese sandwiches), bubble tea, specialty coffee, and Asian-inspired desserts like their signature chocolate chip with walnut cookies. All are house-made in small batches with local, fresh, seasonal, and natural ingredients. Many gluten-friendly and non-dairy options are available.

The spring menu is out with fresh made-to-order spring rolls with your choice of protein, organic spring mix, shredded coconut, and rice vermicelli noodles wrapped in rice paper served with house made peanut-hoisin sauce. Desserts include popular Japanese pastries, Sakura (cherry blossom) cupcakes and cake rolls, couture mini cakes for Mother’s Day, and strawberry cinnamon rolls.

As a new owner in the restaurant industry, while trying to be a present mom, I’m learning how to operate and sustain the business...LEAN-wise, with effective time management, maintaining the books and payroll, identifying and developing good (and popular) products, upholding quality and consistency, staying customer-focused, and being agile with the ever-changing staff and team schedules. I’m also constantly finding creative ways to improve, promote, and grow our business through strategic partnerships and enabling multiple revenue channels.

I enjoy pilates (with coworkers) and archery as a solo activity. I love live music as a means to unwind and destress.

Bureaucracy. Indecisiveness. And form over substance.

It is an incredibly dynamic industry that allows individuals to build amazing relationships with excellent wholesaler partners. My advice: be open to learning every facet of the industry that you are in, because it will help you be a better and faster decision-maker, thus giving you a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Always be honest about everything: peer and teammate feedback, performance, and work-related situations. There will always be a time when it is easier to bend the truth, but don’t do it. It hurts your integrity, and your integrity is all you have. One team, one dream! Take care of your teammates. Watch out for them. You will build a stronger relationship and a stronger team. Work Hard!

HOW DO YOU DESTRESS AT THE END OF A BUSY DAY?

Work out, spend time with the family at baseball games, and of course, a beautiful glass of Imagery pinot noir.
