April showers bring May flowers, my mom would promise as she held up my galoshes and raincoat. Of course, growing up in Michigan, those showers might be frozen, with one last snowfall to trudge through. Here in Alpharetta, we wait for the tulips, azaleas, lily of the valley, peonies and crocus to pop up to reward us after months of bare branches and cooler temperatures. SPRING is here! I was not really sure what to expect when I stepped off the plane in Willemstad, Curaçao. I had heard about Curaçao before, but never imagined such a beautiful island overflowing with culture and history. Located some 44 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao is the largest of the islands, both in size and in population, that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Everyone is welcome to share in the “Dushi” life of Curaçao. In the local Papiamentu language, Dushi is affirmational and all meanings are positive. Dushi is tasty, beautiful, sexy, sweet, delicious, or just plain old nice. It is literally the favorite adjective of the island. The country of Curaçao even has a nickname: Dushi Korsou. Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, accommodates some 743 notable international monuments. Its rich, globally-influenced history illustrates the organic growth of a multicultural community over three centuries. Willemstad’s people and maritime history are vibrantly expressed through the city’s incredible

public art installations. Beautifully colored sculptures and murals adorn the buildings, courtyards, and park benches throughout this breathtaking seaside paradise – each telling a different and unique story of Curaçao. Grab a scooter and get lost amongst the pastel crayon-colored Dutch colonial buildings that give way to hidden sculpture gardens, neighborhood art galleries, painted staircases and adorned alleyways. Be sure to catch Curaçao’s “big sister,” Chichi, the ubiquitous Rubenesque lady of the island who is always portrayed with brightly patterned, vivid fabrics. Downtown Willemstad boasts some of the city’s best sites including the one-of-a-kind Queen Emma Floating Bridge and Wilhelmina Plaza. For a real taste of the island, don’t forget a local rum tasting at Annabay Club or catch an authentic island lunch at Plasa Bieu Food Hall. Whether you feel like a quick snack or a gourmet meal, there are many options. Restaurant Nultwintig, with its sleek beachside dining room, is the ultimate island dining experience. Artfully plated local ingredients dazzle thanks to an international team of very gifted chefs. Ceviche 91 Gastrobar lives up to its name by offering creative and innovative ceviche as well as international cuisine and tapas. Also, be sure to check out Number Ten Café for lunch. Located in a restored mansion located on the grounds of Landhuis Bloemhof, Number Ten is eclectically decorated and offers a simple but upscale café experience. Get out and explore the island. Curaçao is only 171 square miles so you can really get anywhere and back in just one day. There are 38 sun-soaked beaches in Curaçao to explore and the beach life is incredible. perfect white sandy beaches, hiking along the rugged coastline, or jet-skiing across pristine blue waters, each beach and cove is unique and offers a different glimpse into island life. The waters that surround this tiny island nation are home to expansive coral reefs brimming with marine life and are perfect for snorkeling or diving. Beach hopping is a common pastime and no one does it better than Touriffic Curaçao. Take an early flight and you could be at the Fairmont Mayakoba infinity pool with a view of the ocean by lunchtime. Atlanta is less than a three hour direct flight to Cancún. From there, a quick car ride will deliver you into the warm embrace of Mayakoba, an award winning eco-paradise on the Riviera Maya with four luxury hotels, private residences, a PGA golf course, white sandy beaches and miles of lush, green jungle. Just 25% of the property’s 620 acres is developed, leaving plenty of room for the habitat to support native wildlife, and an environment of calm for hotel guests. The Fairmont was the first hotel to open in Mayakoba in 2006. The property has recently undergone an extensive renovation. Rooms have been remodeled with a fresh, neutral palette and organic touches tied to the environment, like coral and local wood. For me, a crucially important part of travel is being able to soak up the history and culture of a place. It can be challenging to get an authentic experience at an all inclusive resort. Mayakoba gets it right. There are many opportunities to immerse yourself in local culture. Spend an afternoon shopping for local, handmade products at El Pueblito, a replica of a traditional Mexican town square, complete with a mission-style chapel. Explore crystal clear water and stalactites 50 feet underground at Cenote El Burrodromo. There are thousands of these otherworldly freshwater sinkholes throughout the Yucatan Peninsula - all connected through limestone passageways. Learn about the Melipona beecheii, an endangered species of stingless bee native to the Yucatan that produces rare honey that is known to have medicinal properties. There are many delicious dining options to keep your palate piqued, but one stands out and offers unexpected cuisine for a Mexican vacation. The Banyan Tree’s Saffron serves incredible Thai dishes overlooking the Mayakoba mangrove. Having historical gems like Savannah just a quick drive away is a bonus of living in Atlanta. Hearing that the riverside area had been recently transformed as the Plant Riverside District, I grabbed a foodie friend and headed there for a weekend to recharge. Since we were just there for a few days, we decided to pack it all in by hitting the entertainment and nightlife right outside our door and just a trolley away. So pack a bag and grab a friend or family, because you’re in for surprises around every corner on the revitalized riverfront of Savannah! End your night by “sliding” into Electric Moon Skytop Lounge (yes, they have a slide!) or stop by Myrtle & Rose’s gorgeous rooftop garden. The Real Roanoke

Well, that was a pleasant surprise! Visiting Roanoke, Virginia, I found a growing urban mountain town full of starry-eyed business owners, outdoor enthusiasts and hometown loyalists who wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. My direct f light was full of college students (there are more than 20 schools nearby) and the wonderfully tiny regional airport is just 10 minutes from the historic downtown where boutique and larger brand hotels and a large conference center are located. This “Capital of the Blue Ridge” has been a crossroads for commerce since the 1740s, first for Native Americans and later for the railroad which roared in by the 1850s. The city now hosts popular music and food festivals and is the home to a burgeoning mountain bike scene. And They’re Off! THE COUNTDOWN TO KENTUCKY DERBY 149 HAS BEGUN

The Bluegrass state will be dressed in her spring finest for the build-up to the big day. Thunder Over Louisville is one of the nation’s top air shows on April 22, and after dark, one of the country’s largest pyrotechnic shows. April 27th is the opening day of Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront. Concerts, food trucks, Chow Wagon, and fun for the entire family abound until Derby Eve, May 5. The Derby City hosts a long list of events the week before the main event that everyone knows about: The Kentucky Derby. Some of my favorites are the Great Balloon Race, Pegasus Parade and The Great Steamboat Race. Your Derby outfit won’t be complete without a fabulous chapeau! Forme’ Millinery, Christine A. Moore Millinery and The Hat Girls offer a beautiful array of women’s and men’s hats that will have you fitting right in at Churchill Downs “Millionaires Row” for the Derby. If you would like to create your own, Judith M. Millinery Supply can provide the materials to gussy up an existing hat or fascinator. Churchill Downs hosts a week of races and other activities to keep you entertained. Dawn at the Downs is a unique experience that will take your

breath away. You can watch the Thoroughbreds that will be running on Saturday in the morning mist as the sun rises over the Twin Spires. The Kentucky Derby Museum, just outside the gates of Churchill Downs, celebrates the rich history and tradition of horse racing at the Downs and is open year round, but a must-see while you’re there. Opening Night kicks off Derby Week with an evening of heart-pounding racing under the lights on April 29th. This year, Tuesday of Derby week is 502’s Day, a nod to the Louisville area code, 502, and general admission will be only $5! Champions Day is Wednesday, May 3. This year we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s Triple Crown sweep. Fifty years later, Secretariat still holds the record for the fastest combined times of all three races that make up the Triple Crown, and is thought of by many as the greatest racehorse of all time. May 4th is Thurby. Come celebrate what Kentucky is famous for – bourbon, horse racing and great music with bluegrass music near the paddock and plenty of food and bourbon, of course! If you can’t make it to the Derby, make it to Thurby and you will leave Kentucky with plans to come back. May 5th is The Kentucky Oaks. This is the day for the fillies. Fillies can run with the boys on Saturday, but Friday at the Oaks is a race just for them. Ladies, break out your best pink outfit or accessory. Pink is worn to bring awareness to breast and ovarian cancer. Prior to the running of The Oaks, breast and ovarian cancer survivors participate in the Survivors Parade. May 6th is the day the horse racing world waits all year for: The Kentucky Derby. It’s the first leg of the Triple Crown and an experience you won’t forget. From the pageantry of the parade of horses in the paddock, to the glorious hats and outfits of the patrons, the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home” to the PA announcing “And they’re off!”, Kentucky during Derby Week is an experience you need to have. In 2010 our family took the trip of a lifetime to Costa Rica to celebrate our oldest son’s college graduation. We rented a land cruiser and drove through the country, which allowed us to experience the many aspects of this beautiful place.
