LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friends,

March 2023 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

Every year, 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The mission of Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) is to educate as many people as possible about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer because, currently, there is no early detection test for the disease. Early detection and treatment are vital to increasing survival odds. We were introduced to GOCA by Sean O’Keefe, and now have a 10-year partnership with the organization, supporting GOCA Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, the Teal Trot 5K and so much more. We've loved providing a platform to share GOCA's mission of education and awareness. You can support the GOCA mission by attending the annual Shaken, Not Stirred Gala on Saturday, March 11 at Georgia Aquarium. Proceeds from the event will allow GOCA to continue and expand ovarian cancer education and awareness across Georgia and beyond. Tickets and additional information are available at GAOvarianCancer.org. Throughout this issue, we bring you stories of beautiful homes and special families who call our community HOME. We hope you keep this issue on your coffee table and refer to it next time you need inspiration or a recommendation on a home services provider! We’re all about community!

Over the last ten years, City Lifestyle’s dedication to the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) has changed the way people think about ovarian cancer. Whether advertising the “Teal Trot” or “Teal to Heal” the stories in the magazines have always been about the survivors. Jim Newman, the publisher of Buckhaven, Alpharetta, and Johns Creek City Lifestyle magazines, along with Sue Collins and Karyn Slovin, have dedicated themselves to telling the stories of real people who live in our communities. “One of the key principles and goals of City Lifestyle is to support our community and give back as much as possible,” says Jim. “GOCA is the perfect partner.” “Our partnership with GOCA has been organic. We are in the business of storytelling and community building and their work is so meaningful,” says Sue. “It’s been our pleasure to support their work, shine a light on some amazing volunteers, and honor the families who are forever changed by ovarian cancer.” As we profiled GOCA’s most memorable annual fundraising events, we have been able to highlight individual survivor stories, allowing you, our readers, to learn more about these women and their ovarian cancer journey. We were all really impacted by their stories of survival, which helped to educate us about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. In honor of the ongoing support and dedication to ovarian cancer awareness, the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is proud to celebrate City Lifestyle magazines by honoring them with the Virginia “Ginger” Ackerman Above and Beyond Award. The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance is celebrating its 25th Anniversary on March 11 at Georgia Aquarium. Feeling at Home When Dining Out ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

When you set the table for a special occasion at home, do you just focus on the forks or do you layer the look with carefully chosen table coverings, fresh flowers, candles (unscented, always) and beloved plates? Think about your favorite restaurants. While the food is the star, the interior design and tablescapes are the stage that creates first impressions and helps meals look more beautiful. “People are noticing the details and want to know more about the plate, not just what’s being served on it,” says Morgan Jones-Greenberg owner of Table One, a boutique manufacturers rep group in Atlanta

specializing in table tops for the hospitality industry. Working with chefs and restaurant owners, her team adds the tabletop building blocks of a look and decides on silverware, glassware, plates, table lighting, coffee service pieces and accessories. Here in Alpharetta, she worked with Nick Hassiotis, Foundation Social Eatery, Operating Partner. “As a jumping-off point, we want something eye-catching and interesting to look at,” says Nick. “A beautiful table and interior design gives diners an initial impression of what’s to come before they start CONTINUED >

their meal. Is it casual? Is it fancy? How many forks do they have out? Do they have their silverware rolled? Is there a wine glass pre-set? The tablescape provides visual clues for what’s to follow.” Diners at FSE are seated at tables made of beautiful, warm walnut, which are complemented by a bold navy napkin and antique finished silverware. The footed water glasses provide both weight and texture to the table. The more angular wine glass adds height and visual interest, while also encouraging the guests to go ahead and order that first glass of wine upon arrival. Next time you dine out, devour the interior design too. It’s all a part of the meal. Bon appétit!

One of the many wonderful things about living in Alpharetta is the fantastic choice of restaurants and cuisine that we have to choose from. Of course, being creatures of habit, we probably tend to frequent a few favorite places instead of exploring the incredible variety of food available. Global Menu aims to change that. “Our vision is to provide restaurant owners with a service that enables them to digitize their menu and instantly change prices, dishes or any other aspect of their menu,” says founder, Stuart Wakeling of Alpharetta. The Global Menu App, available in the Apple and Google app stores, helps users to explore different types of cuisine such as American, Chinese, Indian, and Mediterranean or find specific dishes like chicken 65 or chicken Milanese. All this is done based on the user’s real-time location. Future enhancements include dietary requirements e.g. gluten/dairy/nut free. With a passion to support local businesses, this service is available at no cost to all Alpharetta restaurants for 2023. “We chose Alpharetta because of the quality of the local schools, but also, coming from a family that comprises multiple nationalities (English, Indian, Canadian), it made a lot of sense to move to an area where we didn’t feel out of place,” says Stuart. “Having been here for three years, we haven’t looked back and believe there is a real opportunity for Global Menu to partner with our local restaurants and increase their operational agility.” Visit GlobalMenu.App to register or contact stuart@globalmenu.app to learn more.

AT HOME WITH CHEF TAYLOR NEARY ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATRINA MAXWELL

Taylor Neary is the chef and owner of Restaurant Holmes and Holmes Slice, both located in Alpharetta. Holmes is Chef Neary’s brick and mortar concept that boasts local, eclectic American food and cocktails. Holmes Slice is their pizzeria, located in the market hall of Halcyon. Neary is a Roswell native, Auburn alum, and a Le Cordon Bleu graduate. He lives with his wife Adrian and his three children, Veikko, Theo, and Otto, and two dogs, Robi and Birdie. We caught up with Chef Neary on a day off in his home kitchen!

ACL: HOW OFTEN DO YOU COOK AT HOME AND WHO IS AROUND THE TABLE WITH YOU? TN: All three boys! Veikko (7), Theo (6), and Otto (3) and my lovely wife. I try to cook at least once a week, sometimes more, depending on work.

ACL: WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO DINNERS? TN: We really love to do a kitchen sink Asian style noodle. I use all the veggies and protein that we have chilling in the fridge/freezer. I have a plethora of home made sauces and oils that I keep on hand to spice up a quick and yummy dinner for the fam. Breakfast is big at our house! I love to use our flat top for pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Super simple but loved by all!

ACL: YOUR RESTAURANT KITCHENS ARE TEMPLES TO YOUR CRAFT! TELL US ABOUT YOUR HOME KITCHEN. TN: I use a Wolf range with gas burners and a cast iron flat top. It has a dual convection oven. I typically cook in cast iron, but if not, I use All-Clad and Hestan cookware. CONTINUED >

Smart decking means more space for the family.

36

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

If there is one thing the pandemic has done, it’s to increase the need for more outdoor living space. This means merging the indoor and outdoor spaces together and making the most of useful spaces year-round. This is great for those still working from home. We continue to see a big push for covered spaces that can remain open or enclosed with screens or windows. We have also had many requests for changing a window to a bifold or sliding door that increases the square footage of usable living space.

Another big trend is the al fresco outdoor kitchen for grilling, smoking, refrigeration and storage. The design allows for plenty of serving space and room for a pizza oven. We are also seeing more and more homeowners move away from materials that require maintenance to more sustainable, green materials. Composite decking has come a long way in recent years with many beautiful colors and texture options. As with indoor color trends, we are seeing the same for outside, with a focus on earth tone colors, blending grays and beige.

The project pictured left really does encompass all the outdoor living trends. I love that it has several different gathering areas with two being covered. It has sustainable materials, retractable screens, a fire feature, an outdoor kitchen and panoramic doors to extend indoor living space. Let The Sunshine In! Cleaning blinds should be on your honey-do list

ARTICLE BY ALPHARETTA CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

Spring will be here before we know it. And with it comes the yearly scrubbing, dusting, and purging: spring cleaning. Give this year’s cleanup routine a refresh and start with the windows, so when that first warm day arrives, it’s spring—not dust—that’s in the air. John Weinstock, executive vice president of Graber, a leading brand of custom window treatments, offers tips and advice for mastering a window treatment deep clean - an important step in keeping them looking sharp and preserving a home décor investment.

treatments, from Roman, solar and pleated shades to blinds of any kind. Just pop an upholstery or brush attachment onto your vacuum hose and go! For deep cleaning most shades, just use a soft cloth or sponge, spot clean with mild detergent and warm water and that should get the job done.

KEEP IT SIMPLE. When it comes to most kinds of blinds, the feather duster is your friend. Just lightly dust on a regular basis—bimonthly or monthly—and you’re set. You could use an ultrasonic cleaner on your cellular blinds and sponge down your vinyl vertical blinds, or you could make your life easy and go with vacuuming—the one cleaning method that’s safe for virtually all

ADD IT TO YOUR CLEANING SCHEDULE. Once the initial cleaning is done, upkeep is as easy as making window treatments part of your vacuuming routine. A quick and regular pass will not only make your window treatments last longer, but it will also reduce the dust and allergens in your home. An allaround win!

H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN

START WITH ONE ROOM. There’s no need to tackle all your window treatments at once. If you start now and clean one room’s worth of treatments a week, by the time the first warm days of spring arrive you’ll be set.

Townhome, Sweet Home ALPHARETTA'S REAL ESTATE MARKET IS HOT! HERE'S WHAT $900,000 WILL GET YOU.

ARTICLE BY ALPHARETTA CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

Here in Alpharetta, residential inventory remains low. While you may not think that’s a reason to celebrate, low inventory stabilizes prices, says Sherry Ajluni, Team Leader, Home with Sherry Team, Compass. For January in Alpharetta, the average list price is up an average of 17% compared to this time last year and just 2% lower than Q4 2022. Days on market have drifted up with the average increasing to 55, 12 days more than Q4 2022. The list-to-close price ratio is relatively stable at 96%, compared to 98% in Q4 2022. We asked Sherry to share a current listing (as of press time). We think this townhome is perfect for anyone who loves shopping, dining and hanging out here in Alpharetta. Enjoy maintenance-free living close to popular entertainment venues, fine dining, and some of the best shopping Alpharetta has to offer. This four-story townhome with

an elevator is in beautiful Serenade, located minutes from Avalon, downtown Alpharetta, Fetch dog park, and Ameris Bank Amphitheater. It has a beautifully updated interior and two outdoor living spaces. This gated community is situated in the heart of Alpharetta and zoned for top North Fulton schools. The home is flexible enough to accommodate any lifestyle. Couples will enjoy the entertaining spaces and proximity to trendy bars and restaurants. Retirees will love the fact that there is an elevator, if stairs are an issue. They’ll also like the space to host family gatherings. Families love it because of the amenities, excellent schools, and plenty of bedrooms for children. This home is the definition of turnkey. The neutral color palette goes with any décor and the appliances and lighting are on trend.

The main living level of this townhome is at street level, meaning you can enter without climbing a set of stairs, which is unique for a townhome. Lighting throughout the home is upgraded and not builder-grade. And, finally, this townhome has two large decks, also unusual for most townhomes. The current homeowner installed custom closet systems in nearly all closets and laundry rooms, shutters on all doors and windows for privacy, and added soundproofing around the laundry room to keep things quiet no matter when you need to do laundry. Walk to Top Golf and Ameris Bank Amphitheater. Shopping and dining at Avalon, North Point Mall area, and downtown Alpharetta are just a 5-minute drive. SherryTeam.com

3 Hot Trends

ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY

in Kitchen Design

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
