Growing up, pets came into our household by default. Neighbors moved and we adopted Taja, an Australian Sheepdog who nipped at my jacket every winter as we zoomed down the hill on a toboggan. A cat showed up on our front porch and with indifference, my mother named her Calico. Later, my brother returned from Colorado after a break-up and brought a giant dog, Mercy - part Malamute, Newfoundland and Bouvier. We loved them all! Now, I have two cats, Johnny and Tommy (dressed as a lion, pictured), who are as annoying as they are lovely. But, aren't we all? Enjoy this issue honoring pets and kids. That’s my cat, Tommy, dressed as a lion for Halloween! Good luck to all the students and teachers heading back into the classroom this month. Be kind to one another and, as my mother would tell me, "be a good helper." All my best,

When Nashville’s Maggie Rose released her critically-acclaimed album Have A Seat, she defied the expectations set for her as a “country artist.” The album, produced by Ben Turner of Alabama Shakes and recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (Etta James, Credence Clearwater Revival), boasts R&B/soul influences, while calling for unity in a world divided. The band’s keyboard player, Kaitlyn Connor is from Alpharetta and was thrilled to return home this summer. The CMT-recognized artist played at City Green Live in Sandy Springs in June in front of a packed house of

fans, family and friends. Maggie Rose graciously spoke with us about her new album and her female-songwriter-focused podcast Salute The Songbird. Have A Seat came out in 2021 and people love it. What about this album resonates with listeners differently than your prior releases? This album came out when we were able to physically gather again. To have music that brings us together is a relief after the pandemic. The songs are about inclusivity and compassion. Those themes are nice to keep in mind when we’re societally having a difficult time communicating.

From what I could tell, "Have A Seat " [also a lyric in the song "What Are We Fighting For?"] means “let’s sit down and talk it out.” Absolutely. It’s about making room for people who want to sit at that proverbial table. Like, the song “For Your Consideration” is me addressing rhetoric that I was seeing across the board. There were people not even willing to agree to disagree. The first step in showing compassion is by giving people the space to say what they’re feeling.

What brought you to Ben Tanner as a producer? Ben Tanner was introduced to me by my publisher, Katie Fagan. After [my 2019 album] Change The Whole Thing, I wanted to make an album with soul and vibrance. Ben Tanner, is well versed in the Muscle Shoals sound, being part of Alabama Shakes, and is managed by one of Katie’s best friends. It just came together really organically. How did Salute the Songbird come together? The pandemic was the instigator for the project. I was a guest on another podcast called Past Present Future Live with RJ Bee, one of the cofounders of Osiris, where my podcast is produced. The producer realized, “we don’t have very many female hosts.” They loved that interview and asked me if it would be something that I was interested in. I jumped at it to reconnect to artists I’d grown accustomed to seeing on a regular basis. There are no specified openers for your summer tour. Is it important to give local artists a spot opening for touring acts? Absolutely. I’ve been given a leg up by other artists, so if I can extend an opportunity to someone who’s hitting the pavement and sweating it out, then that’s what I’m going to do.

Is there any advice that you would give artists starting out in this industry? You can do things in your own way. I subscribed to so many other people’s rules when I first moved to Nashville. I thought that was the only way to do it. If you see a path that’s more ambitious, more comfortable - don’t be afraid to ask for it. That is totally within your right and your power.

It’s easy to have fun while eating at the Revolving Sushi Factory in Alpharetta - a unique experience for kids and “big” kids too. They serve the sushi kaiten-zushi style, where plates of covered sushi whizz around on a conveyor belt for patrons to choose as it passes by their seats. The robot cats and bus are the main attraction. The cats race around the restaurant and

deliver soy sauce, ginger and wasabi, along with specialty sushi; and if you place special orders on the tablet at your table, the bus will deliver them to you fresh from the sushi chef! “Ashley made my daughter Maddie feel like she was the most special, important girl she has ever photographed,” says Kim Engel of Alpharetta, “but I guess that’s the sign of a good photographer, because all my friends say the same thing. She has a gift of connecting with each child.” “High school presents challenges for teenagers across the board,” says photographer Ashley Hugghins. “Most are balancing grades, activities, a social life and more. Many also struggle with self-image.” Ashley continues, “Modern Portraiture is what I call an experience in styled portrait sessions, where the client feels like ‘a star for a day’. The portraits I create make people feel good about themselves.” Ashley’s boutique photography brand, Urban Trend Studios, takes fun, modern portraits while providing a one-of-a-kind experience for each client. Ashley is an experienced portrait photographer specializing in high school senior and teen portrait sessions. Ashley’s expertise in posing and lighting, along with her ability to create a comfortable, relaxed shoot, results in photos that capture teens and tweens at their best. “We asked Ashley to take Maddie’s senior pictures and were blown away by the experience,” says Kim. “The kids really are first and foremost with Ashley. She does an initial consultation with the child to inspire them to take the lead with their own vision. How do they see their pictures going? Where do they think we should take them?” The day of the photo shoot, Maddie and Kim met Ashley at her studio. There, Ashley had a professional makeup artist on hand to do the makeup for the session.

“Maddie is not one who would normally jump in front of the camera, but Ashley put her at ease immediately,” says Kim. Then they went to Maddie’s chosen location, which was on the Beltline in front of Ponce City Market. “It was a very unique experience and not at all cliché,” explains Kim. “It wasn’t the same fountain or wall that hundreds of kids had been photographed in front of. Ashley finds the most amazing poses in the most unique places.” Maddie brought a few outfits she wanted to wear and Ashley had a pop-up changing tent. “Maddie changed her outfit in the tent halfway through the session,” says Kim. “She felt like a superstar with her own portable changing room.” Just a few weeks later, Maddie received an app on her phone from Ashley, so she could view and share her pictures on social media. “Ashley’s main focus truly is about the kids and how they feel about themselves,” says Kim. “Maddie’s senior pictures were amazing. The whole experience was like nothing we had ever done before and was way more than we had expected. We were thrilled from beginning to end.” “Each photo shoot showcases each teen’s individual personality – from the location to the selected outfits to the poses – and allows them to be themselves,” says Ashley. “That’s when I capture their true beauty.” UrbanTrendStudios.com

All-electric vehicles are gaining popularity as gas prices soar for their fuel economy, sustainability and increasing ease of charging from home. Prestigious automaker BMW embraces all of these benefits and takes it to the next level with the implementation of power, luxury, and technology with the all-new 2023 iX M60. Classified as an all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle, this five-seater is one of BMW’s most anticipated additions to its renowned iX lineage and it surely does not disappoint. Studio Bliss ARTIST PAIGE MOREHEAD FINDS SOLACE AND INSPIRATION IN HER HOME STUDIO

For Nashville artist Paige Morehead, her home studio couldn’t be more perfect. The sunroom — with windows on three sides, fresh flowers tumbling out of vases, canvases and tubes of acrylics at the ready— is her sanctuary. “I paint with acrylic paint which doesn’t have a smell, but I love having fresh flowers in my studio and around the house for aroma and inspiration. But, being in that room is truly a treat for me. I love to create!” says Paige, a self-taught artist and full-time professional since 2003. “I’m a neat freak and like everything in its place and organized, but my studio is an orderly disaster. Someday I hope to have a larger space to paint, because I really like to spread out and work on larger pieces.” Whatever her process, gallery owners and fans implore her to indulge. Our publisher and City Lifestyle president both fell under Paige’s spell, and now have her work in their homes and office. Her work features vibrant florals, colorful abstracts, black and whites and monochrome abstracts, featured in galleries in the South and nationwide Paige’s inspirations range from such artists as Sterling Strauser to the great masters of Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, and Edgar Degas. These influences, among many others, have given Paige the tools to fashion a unique style of her own. She uses a palette knife that creates thick textured visions, and also makes marks around the canvas for flowing purpose. Paige infuses earth tones mixed with vibrant colors, accompanied with a rich high gloss finish that makes the painting pop. Paige’s work comes alive in any setting. She is in her studio this month working on commissions for interior designers and individuals and keeping her galleries stocked. PaigeMorehead.com
