Inspired by her 3-year old son, who lovingly calls strawberries “strawbabies”, my daughter Jane Collins created this shirt to find some way to help the children of Ukraine. One hundred percent of the profits from this shirt will go to Save the Children. Save the Children is right now on the ground, in the U.S. and around the world, delivering essential humanitarian aid. Your purchase helps this life-saving work. Children in Ukraine, Afghanistan and around the world who might be caught in the middle of armed conflict, forced to flee their homes and exposed to injury, hunger and sub-zero temperatures, are Save the Children's number one concern. The Classic Unisex Tee is a traditional, heavyweight tee that is usually made of 100% cotton and comes in sand and white. The adorable crewneck sweatshirt is a classic fit unisex shirt in sport grey, gold and white. The sweatshirts are a 50/50 blend of cotton and poly and launder beautifully. A New Favorite in Savannah

THE ALIDA

The drive to Savannah is easy. I find myself being pulled towards the coast as I listen to my favorite playlists (Moonchild, Fleet Foxes) and podcasts (Smartless, This American Life) and let the fervor of Atlanta fade. Checking into The Alida, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Savannah’s revitalized riverfront and new entertainment district, the mellow vibes continue with a warm welcome and a reminder that the hotel’s cruiser bikes are complimentary, should I wish to pedal through the parks. Yes, please! In one corner of the lobby is a gift shop with a lovely collection of local products and sophisticated choices. What a nice suprise! My view overlooks the Talmadge Memorial Bridge and Savannah River, through floor-to-ceiling windows in the corner suite. I appreciate the two robes (one for showering, one for cozy time), nicely lit bathroom (I have an aversion to overhead lighting) and the soft Sferra throw blanket on the king bed. After a bike ride, stopping at E. Shaver Books and the ShopSCAD store, I head to Rhett for dinner. I LOVE it when my home base hotel sports an excellent restaurant. The mussels and truffle fries, mushroom tartine and stuffed rainbow trout with mushrooms, leeks, smoked bacon, cured lemon pan sauce were stand-outs.

Executive Chef Jason Starnes brings his love for local cuisine and true southern hospitality after serving as Executive Chef of Barnsley Resort and South City Kitchen Buckhead. A North Carolina native, Chef Starnes enjoys spending time with his family, visiting farmers’ markets, and enjoying good wine, great food, and exceptional company. The Alida values the preservation of history while moving considerably into the future. Their Culture Seeker package includes an unforgettable Port of Savannah boat tour with local experts, Outside Savannah. Enjoy the views of the city from the water, learn about the nation’s busiest port, and get to know another side of the Hostess City of the South then and now. There will also be live music all throughout April every week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in either The Lost Square or The Trade Room at the hotel. While the city offers so much to see, you may not want to stray far from The Alida. TheAlidaHotel.com

Why Singing Soothes Her Soul

ARTICLE BY CAROLE BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN

I love to sing. I have never thought of myself as a great singer, but singing has always made me happy. So, when I heard through my friends at church that a new non-audition chorus would use our church for rehearsals, I signed up and became one of the 19 original singers in the North Atlanta Voices. I didn’t know what part I would sing at our first rehearsal, but I decided I would be safer tucked away with the altos, who were mostly safe from high notes. I quickly found that all levels of singing experience surrounded me - some were professional musicians, some had experience with choirs or choruses, and others who were more like me, had little to no experience.

Our conductor, Lucas Tarrant, is a talented and engaging teacher and an expressive musician. He provides us with informative direction so that anybody can participate and not feel left out of the artful music we make. Lucas has great faith in us, and we are challenged with varying degrees of difficulty in our musical selections. Our songs are from the classical choral canon, but we have learned and performed songs from multiple centuries and in more than five languages. If you had asked me before this experience if I had sung in more than five languages, I would have laughed at the thought. I had never performed for a live audience before, and I found the experience of working together in preparation for our concert exhilarating. One of the significant discoveries for me was how people of all ages and backgrounds who sing together quickly develop a sense of community. What unites us, chorus and audience alike, is a common goal of making beautiful music and bringing people together. Joining this chorus has opened my life to so many new avenues. I had just retired from a large organization in a professional services role and mainly associated with fellow professionals. In the chorus, I have met people from many different life experiences. I have challenged myself to take private lessons where I have learned to sing arias in other languages. Also, I have furthered my commitment to the success of NAV by joining its board of directors to help our founders, Cheryl and Lucas, get the recognition they deserve. We are blessed with outstanding leadership and very talented and enthusiastic singers. I am happy because I sing. The Spring Concert will feature popular choral standards, including Whitacre, Offenbach, Copland, and more. Our conductor will provide background about each song and composer. We will have a raffle with products donated by local businesses, and a complimentary wine and cheese reception following the concert. North Atlanta Voices is Atlanta’s only non-auditioned community chorus, cofounded by Lucas Tarrant and Cheryl Logan in 2018. What started as a spark and idea of a young voice teacher is now a 45 member choir. The goal is to provide an opportunity for people to come together, make music and friends, and foster a positive environment focused on inclusion, diversity, and community. Carole Browne has been singing with the chorus from its inception in 2018. She is a dedicated alto. H OT SP OT | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

Athens, Georgia is a Southern city like no other. The rich, self-defined, and ever evolving culture of beer, food, music, art, and education has charted the growth of this small university town. Exploring Athens should be on everyone’s short list this summer for the perfect weekend get-away. With globally renowned recording artists such as REM and the iconic B-52’s, music has always been at the center of the Athens cultural explosion. From AthFest

to PorchFest, the city is alive with art, music and a vibe that is inclusive and welcoming to everyone. The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission and its mission “to foster the development and enjoyment of performing, visual, cultural and other arts in the Athens-Clarke County community” has done its job well. Home to the Georgia State Museum and its impressive collection, there are also galleries representing local and national artists. There are 29 urban murals gracing most every building throughout the city. Fire hydrants are painted by award-winning artists. Mosaics enliven the base of lampposts, and art brightens the city’s bus shelters. Even the restrooms in most restaurants and breweries feature pop-up galleries offering “yet to be discovered” masterpieces from local artists. Art and beer collide in Athens. Probably one of the most famous craft beer destinations in Southeast, Athens is not only home Terrapin and Creature Comforts, but also to a whole host of other breweries that dot the newest attraction: The Athens Beer Trail. Akademia, Athentic, Normaltown, and Southern Brewing Company not only serve some of the most memorable and varied styles of beer in Georgia, but they are also the heartbeat of the city. While they are all quite unique they have come together as a community of brewers to support each other and to support the city that supports them - all through the love of good beer. Restaurants, pubs, coffee houses, and bakeries are tucked away in every neighborhood. Jessica Rothacker’s Heirloom Café is just one example of the local, clever, and delicious lunch or dinner destinations that the city has to offer. Two of our favorites are the global street food restaurant Paloma Park and the San Francisco-inspired neighborhood restaurant The National. CONTINUED >

MEMPHIS ON MY MIND A MAGICAL CITY ON THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI RIVER

ARTICLE BY RHIANNON JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RHIANNON JOHNSON & PROVIDED

Are you making 2022 travel plans? Move Memphis to the top of your list! This Southern city will feed your body, mind, and soul with its numerous musical, historical, and culinary attractions. Here are a few carefully curated suggestions for planning your ultimate experience in this magical city on the mighty Mississippi River.

30

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

MEMPHIS ESTABLISH YOUR HOME BASE AT A HISTORY-MAKING HOTEL Choosing a centrally-located hotel will help you maximize every minute of your Memphis vacation. Located just 15-minutes from Memphis International Airport, the newly-built Hyatt Centric Beale Street is not only situated in the heart of downtown Memphis, it is also the first and only hotel to be located on world-famous Beale Street. The hotel’s 227 guest rooms, including 12 suites, feature large windows offering panoramic views of the Memphis skyline or the Mississippi River. Incorporating original images and materials from its iconic Ironworks neighbor, this hotel also features several nods to the city’s music culture in its decor. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at CIMAS, the hotel’s Latin American-inspired eatery, or sip on a cocktail in the CIMAS Lobby Lounge. If relaxation is on your agenda, slip on your swimsuit and head outside to downtown Memphis’ only resortstyle pool, featuring poolside dining, an expansive sun deck, private poolside cabanas, and an outdoor stage with regular entertainment.

PACK YOUR DAYS AND NIGHTS WITH ADVENTURES AND ATTRACTIONS Take a few steps out your front door to stroll down one of the most famous musical streets in America. Beale Street consists of just three bustling blocks, but features dozens of nightclubs, restaurants, and retail shops. Don’t miss the beer-loving goats at Silky O’ Sullivans! Head over to Sun Studio, where you

can take a guided tour, view unique memorabilia, listen to recording session outtakes, and learn about the studio’s musical legends such Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B King, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Another absolute must when visiting Memphis is a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum. Located at the former Lorraine Motel, the site of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1968 assassination, the National Civil Rights Museum stands as a beacon of education and inspiration.

DRINK AND DINE AROUND THE “BLUFF CITY” When you get hungry, Memphis has endless options for all your cravings: barbecue at Charlie Vergos Rendezvous, pizza and cinnamon rolls at Slim & Husky’s, Lowcountry-inspired cooking at Sugar Grits, and Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken—where the name says it all! Adults, don’t miss out on the tours and tastings at Old Dominick’s Distillery and Grind City Brewery.

RETURN TO THE ROOFTOP After your day’s adventures, head to Beck & Call, your hotel’s rooftop lounge, to enjoy expertly crafted cocktails, peruse an extensive whiskey selection, and snack on small plates. Relax around fire pits and take in unobstructed views of the nightly light show on the “M” Bridge while you reflect on your Memphis experience. ARTICLE BY PORTER GRUBBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTINA J. MASSAD

Atlanta is a city of movers and visionaries. This is quite literally the case with its vibrant dance community. Dreamers abound in these parts, and dreams require movement if they’re ever to come true. Local dancers and choreographers share their work with the city year-round, but Atlanta’s warm spring weather always bears an especially fruitful season of performances. After two years of pandemic-related social distancing and isolation, performance venues and producers are fervently organizing events and reopening their spaces. Artists and audiences are hungry to return to the stage. Artists are hungry to return to the stage, and audiences are flocking to theatres this season. Why not join them? Try something new in April and watch as some of Atlanta’s best performing artists share their latest works-in-progress!

This spring, one show particularly shines: Fly on a Wall’s annual works-in-progress showcase, Excuse the Art. The founding artists call Fly “a platform for innovative performance.” They formed the collective in 2014 when three friends with a shared training background decided that they wanted to produce their own work. “Forging your own path can be overwhelming, so we were seeking support from each other in becoming our own artists,” says Fly artist, Nicole Johnson. “We’re an artist-led platform. The desire to become a platform came from supporting each other’s works. We’re interested in building and developing our own work while actively supporting others with the resources we can share.” They have been resident artists at the fully-equipped Windmill Arts Center in East Point since 2018, where they have extended the benefits of

this space to hundreds of artists across Atlanta since then through residency programs, performance opportunities, and intensive workshops. That’s where the most amazing ideas are born,” says Jimmy Joyner. This year’s lineup is incredibly talented and diverse. Dance and theatre artists alike will grace the stage, including Indya Childs, who was named in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” and Frankie Consent, a 2021 Hambidge Cross-Pollination Art Lab resident artist.
