This issue is all about love and creativity. Love, well, it’s Valentine’s Day and you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting something pink and glittery as you navigate through your day here in Alpharetta. Maybe I overdosed on the holiday working retail (back in the day) and racing to get three dozen cupcakes safely to the kids’ classrooms before the sugar-high party commenced. One year, I gave into the frenzy and served dessert for Valentine’s dinner. My kids thought the idea of chocolate fondue for dinner was dreamy and we continued the tradition for a number of years. Now, I like to think about Valentine’s Day as another opportunity to show love AND appreciation for people who make my days brighter. Our copy editor, Stacy Conde, deserves all the fondue she can stomach for putting up with my last-minute changes and persnickety preferences. Thank you, superstar! Karyn Slovin is on my list too. Karyn manages the lovely ads you see in the magazine (ahem, they keep us afloat) and is always cheerful and works her chocolate kisses off to make sure our ad partners are happy. Dr. David Hill is a plastic surgeon at The Graivier Center and loves his job. He revels in the tiny details of his work and is a warrior about helping patients heal and feel and look their very best. We caught up with him to talk about the intricacies of injections and innovations in his field. Alpharetta City Lifestyle: Plastic surgery is a remarkable specialty that covers a broad spectrum of procedures with rewarding outcomes. From aesthetics to reconstruction, it must be incredibly rewarding to be able to change people’s lives by enhancing their appearance and creating improved self-esteem and quality of life. Dr. David Hill: Having been extensively trained on nearly all aspects of the body from head to toe, I still enjoy operations involving all areas of the body. I keep my skills in tip-top shape by varying the types of cases I perform weekly. This ensures that I am both mentally and physically prepared to solve any issue involving any area that a patient may have. Recently, face and neck lift procedures have become increasingly popular due to virtual meetings. These operations can be technically challenging as you are working around some of the most important structures of the face. This difficulty is perhaps what makes these cases even more rewarding. Fortunately, we have many good options to repair and tighten the area whether it’s less invasive procedures such as liposuction with ThermiTight or a MyEllevate neck lift, to a full lower face and neck lift. There are many great options, and through a private consultation, we select the option that will best fit the outcome you are seeking. ACL: We’re hearing a lot about QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes), a newer FDA-approved treatment. Tell us more! DH: From the injectables, QWO has quickly become one of the most popular cellulite treatments. It’s a great winter treatment to become summer-ready. The Graivier Center has also been selected to participate in a hyper dilute Radiesse Injection trial to receive FDA approval specifically

for use of in the décolleté area. Traditional Radiesse acts as a volumizer, versus the hyper dilute version, which rejuvenates by strengthening collagen, decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. Dr. Graivier was one of the first to utilize the hyper dilute form of Radiesse and we have been using it successfully to rejuvenate the hand and neck areas. We are excited to help bring this injection option towards FDA approval. ACL: Botox is everywhere. What should we look for before making the big decision about this injection? DH: While injections such as botox and fillers are becoming increasingly common, with med spa locations as accessible as a coffee shop, it is important to get to know your injector. Basic injection training may deliver results for most patients, but experience and knowledge of anatomy is crucial in preventing problems and complications. Injecting into a blood vessel is one of the most severe complications, but it is treatable if recognized and acted upon in a timely manner of about 90 minutes or less. If untreated, it could lead to skin loss and possible blindness. Some of our referrals involve patients who need to reverse their injections due to issues such as infections, granuloma development (severely inflamed areas) and extreme bruising. Problems can arise in any area of injection, but some of the higher risk areas include the glabella (between the eyebrows), under the eyes and mid-face. These are medical procedures. Thus, I recommend you take time to make your decision and ask questions prior to treatment. ACL: You are busy! DH: Yes! Another rewarding aspect of surgery is the ability to provide care not only in the U.S., but also abroad performing mission work. In the past five years, I was fortunate to partake in nine medical mission trips to countries ranging from Columbia and Guatemala, to the Congo and Zimbabwe. These folks know love and life! We talked to the crew at The Mansions at Alpharetta Assisted Living and Memory Care for this special Valentine's Day report. We asked about the love of their lives and where they find joy these days.

JE AN GADDIS:

LOVE: Well, I have eight of them - my eight grandchildren. I couldn’t even pick a favorite out of the bunch. I’ve lived in Atlanta since I was two years old and both of my children married people who were local, so I have been able to see all of my grandchildren grow up. They are the light of my life. I don’t know how God could have loved me so much as to give me perfect kids and grandkids - wait, no I shouldn’t say that - nobody’s perfect, but they’re as good as they come! JOY: It’s hard to narrow down who brightens my day the most at The Mansions! The reason I moved was because I was in a 5,000 square foot house by myself. I wanted companionship, camaraderie, and the people here (both staff and residents) are so friendly. Don’t get me wrong - I have my own privacy, or if I want company, I just open the door and walk out. I love my friends, but the staff have sure been great too.

LINDA GARYANTES:

LOVE: As you live your life, the love of your life changes. When I was young, I lost my husband Joe at 57. I had to revamp my life and find new love! I moved back to Atlanta to be near my children and now I have grandchildren (8 of them) and great-grandchildren (3), so now, they're the loves of my life! The newest isn't quite 3 months old and my grandson moved all the way from Seattle to be near family, so we're blessed. JOY: The group I sit and eat breakfast with every morning always make me laugh. Laughter is your best medicine. We have people from both political parties plus independent, so our discussion can get quite animated. There are six in my group, and they have made me feel so comfortable and at home since moving to The Mansions in October.

ELOISE COWART:

LOVE: My husband, Fred. He was postmaster of our little town. We had two beautiful daughters eight years apart and we had a beautiful life. We knew each other very young in life. We had a good time together. My oldest brother married Fred's oldest sister, so we were no strangers. We were 15 when we met. JOY: I have so many friends. I'm the oldest in my group of friends and they are always there for me. We drink a little wine once in awhile and have a good time.

RON QUEEN:

LOVE: As a divorced man, I have to talk about my daughters. My oldest daughter was born in the Panama Canal zone while I was in the Army. She left us three years ago. She was a wonderful person while she was here. My youngest daughter works for a "little" company (Price Waterhouse), lives in Milton and has two kids, a 13-year-old daughter and a 11-year-old son. JOY: Miss Charlotte is a very nice lady. She and I have had an awful lot of fun. We met when she asked me to sit at her table and I’ve been sitting at her table ever since!

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time.
