Happy New Year, Friends

Do you love our new cover design as much as we do? Our parent company, Lifestyle Publications, is now City Lifestyle. So, you'll see Alpharetta City Lifestyle magazine gracing your mailboxes from now on! While print continues to drive our business, our digital platform at CityLifestyle.com is flourishing. Just see how we've grown. This cover from five years ago celebrated the then-new Jekyll Brewing Co. My, how we've all grown! And, you knew I was going to ask about your resolutions! I mean, it's a new year and this is amnesty month. We can forget about last year's lost opportunities and snafus and jump into a fresh new year, a wide-open frontier. I'm perfectly happy to lose last year's baggage and start a healthier new year, chock full of hopes and dreams. Our book editor Rhiannon Johnson suggested two good books to give (or receive) this month to help. Rhiannon has been writing for us since we launched! I Didn't Do the Thing Today, Letting Go of Productivity Guilt By Madeleine Dore is the inspiring call to take productivity off its pedestal. We love that! She says that by dismantling our comparison to others, aspirational routines, and the unrealistic notions of what can be done in a day, we can finally embrace the joyful messiness and unpredictability of life. I'll have what she's having! Enjoy this issue, find inspiration and let me know what you think of the new page designs!

Will you stick to your weight loss New Years’ resolution this year? Shumeka Hill can help. ARTICLE BY MARIA SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE ALBRIGHT Shumeka Hill owns the Wellness IV Spa and Medical Weight Loss Center in Johns Creek. She graduated from Emory University's School of Medicine and is board-certified in aesthetics, medical weight loss, and obesity medicine. She is passionate about helping clients get the results they desire. Unlike other weight loss specialists, she doesn’t simply focus on the number on the scale. Believing every person is unique, Ms. Hill eschews the one-size-fits-all weight loss programs. She tailors her strategies to each individual and focuses on total wellness. Using lab work, weekly meetings, counseling, and weigh-ins, she works with clients to maintain the agreed-upon plan. In over 15 years of obesity management and disease prevention, she has helped hundreds of people live happier, healthier, and lighter lives. We sat down with Ms. Hill to learn more about what makes her and Wellness IV Spa so special.

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
AL: HOW IS YOUR PROGRAM DIFFERENT THAN OTHER WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMS? SH: A lot of other programs give the same thing to everyone. It's not individualized. I look at each client as a unique person. There could be specific reasons for weight gain that aren’t readily apparent. For each client, I perform weekly body analysis checks. I don't focus on the scale or BMI chart. I focus on the percentage of fat each person has and where they are holding it. After all, muscle weighs more than fat. The scale doesn't know what it’s weighing. It’s more important to look at the content of the weight and address any major issues of what a person eats.
AL: WHO SHOULD CONSIDER YOUR WEIGHT-LOSS PROGRAM? SH: Anyone who has struggled with weight loss should come here. I see clients who have 10 to 30 pounds to lose as well as those who have over 100 pounds of extra weight. My clients are seeking personalized attention and overall body wellness that lasts.
AL: HOW DOES IV NUTRIENT THERAPY HELP OVERALL WELLNESS? SH: In addition to weight loss programs, I also offer IV nutrient therapy. This includes providing clients with water-soluble vitamins intravenously for overall wellness. They get 100% bioavailability of the vitamins as opposed to taking them by mouth. IV nutrient therapy works well to reduce fatigue, insomnia, vitamin
deficiency, anemia and inflammation. It can help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, A1c, and lipid levels while increasing energy and making your skin glow.
AL: WHY IS THIS THE RIGHT TIME TO GET STARTED? SH: It's ALWAYS the right time to get started! You should focus on your health all year round. However, since we have the holidays at the end of the year and people are indulging in rich food and drinks, it’s typical to gain weight. January is a good month for weight loss because it can fix bad habits from the holidays before the pounds keep piling on. Plus, the new year is a great time to make new choices. I want to help people make 2022 their healthiest year yet.
AL: WHY IS ALPHARETTA A GREAT PLACE TO WORK? SH: I'm originally from Chicago, but moved to Metro Atlanta three years ago after being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Chicago's constant cold intensified my pain and I knew that the milder Georgia weather I experienced as a student at Emory would be better. I soon discovered Alpharetta, an area packed with personality, and decided it was the perfect place to open up my first brick-and-mortar location. It’s far enough from the city that it’s quaint, but close enough that I can be downtown in less than 30 minutes. 11705 Jones Bridge Rd. Ste A204 Alpharetta WellnessIVSpa.com

“It’s simply all about using fresh ingredients: fresh fruit, fresh herbs, fresh taste,” says bartender Effie Skiouris at Alpharetta City Center’s Never Enough Thyme. She says to add a San Pellegrino for sparkle and choose a flavor to complement the juice, topping off the glass with a slice of the fresh fruit and voila! You will have a cocktail that’s lovely and light, just right for a healthy new year. Often, bartenders have a mocktail up their sleeve, using housemade simple syrups and sodas. Suggest a taste profile (citrus, ginger, fruit, bitter) and let your bartender take it from there. Make it a mocktail and join the crowd!

Erika Cotton does not take NO for an answer. When a little voice (and finance crunches) discouraged her from getting her Zumba teaching certification in 2015, she powered through to finish and also earned her Athletics and Fitness Association of America certification to be able to teach at her home gym, Life Time Alpharetta When COVID threatened to shut down the Zumba classes she was teaching, she launched a YouTube channel and filled it with classes for her followers and friends. And, when gyms were open again, but students weren’t comfortable with indoor workouts, she held classes at Alpharetta’s Brooke Street Park. “Gene Briski, one of my Zumba besties, suggested the new downtown park. We had about 15 people show up for that class, which grew into a series. It felt so good to dance together again, to connect, to catch up and most importantly to give them a space to relax and forget all their troubles for one hour,” says Erika, a pre-k teacher and now Zumba instructor originally from Lima, Peru. "I did a class for my other peeps who were not ready to come indoors yet. I led separate groups so we could stay safely distant. I wanted to share this with my friends who were also instructors, so they could experience the joy and rush of positive energy this class brought to me; and they could stay motivated at their gym classes,” says Erika. “So I started inviting them to be my guest at the park. Every class was just amazing.” Erika then met Anna Virgo from City of Alpharetta, who invited her to join Alpharetta’s Free Fitness Program, leading Zumba in the Park every Wednesday at 7 p.m. The class grew so much over the weeks, sometimes with more than 70 people in some of the classes. “People always had the brightest smiles and friendly attitude, and always came ready to have fun,” says Erika.

In June 2021, the class was moved from Brooke Street Park to Wills Park, after neighbors surrounding the park filed noise complaints, Erika says. “We were a little sad to leave our first home and felt it wasn’t fair, but we gave it a try. I was very worried that the disappointment about having to change locations would affect the energy, the attendance and ultimately vanish the class. So we tried our hardest to make the parking lot as functional, cozy and welcoming as possible." Gene Briski built a stage so people could see the instructors from anywhere and he set up sound gear. Erika handled decorations, class planning, marketing and coordination with the city. It was a successful transition. “Little did we know, our new home ended up being a much better dance floor. It was surrounded by trees that gave us the perfect shade from the sun and a refreshing breeze. Apparently, it also gave us more exposure, because the class continued to grow and grow,” explains Erika. She is constantly impressed with the growth of the Zumba family, an inclusive, friendly and energetic crew. “I couldn’t have done all this alone. Everyone is an important piece of the puzzle. Everyone is needed. Every one is WELCOME to be part of it. This is what Zumba is about. It’s a fun workout while building a community that shares the same passion for dance and moves to the same beat, even though we all come from different parts of the world.” While the park series ended in November as days grew colder, you can join Erika’s class at Life Time Alpharetta, Mondays at 7:15 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m.

New in 2022: I am excited to announce and promote what I think the 2022 trend will be for beauty: a truly holistic approach to skin health! Connecting with patients: There’s always a story with everything - a past, a present, and a future. Our journey with our patients always begins with their history or past. When it comes to aesthetics, I like to find out about their past treatments or experiences. Then, where they are and finally, where they want to be. The future is a place of uncertainty and patients can be unsure of their results and outcomes. That’s why our multidisciplinary team has the ability to provide multiple treatment plans from multiple perspectives and disciplines to match and deliver realistic, durable, and desired results. New in 2022: Sometimes, standard medicine will only offer medications, hormones, or surgeries that have diminishing long-term results or have undesirable side effects or recovery. It has been my passion throughout my career to advocate for my patients and provide individualized care that fits with their philosophies and lifestyles. That’s where my specialty of Vascular & Interventional Radiology has excelled and made its impact over the last few decades. VIR is the most technologically advanced medical specialty, using advanced imaging to guide wires and catheters through blood vessels or probes into internal organs to treat many disease states including targeted therapies for many cancers. Most of the minimally invasive procedures that I perform are done without anesthesia using only “twilight” sedation and performed in an outpatient same-day setting. Staying fueled: Vegan Chocolate Coconut PROBAR and 40-ounce Mangofest smoothie. Boom and yummy!

POWER SNACKING Before a meet, I will eat toast with almond butter and drink an iced coffee. Runners are encouraged to eat toast as well before a meet. For school lunch, runners are recommended to incorporate protein into their meals. To be a strong runner, fueling your body properly is essential.
POWER SNACKING Actually, I eat very little on game days. I’m usually too focused (and nervous) to eat before a game. If I do eat it’s usually something light like fruit or trail mix.
Mathematics educator, Head Women’s Cross Country Coach, Alpharetta High School
PRACTICE AND REPEAT In-season we have morning practice Monday and Friday and afternoon practice Tuesday—Thursday. This schedule allows runners to acclimate to the heat. Typically, we run workouts twice a week and focus on mileage on other days. The cross country meets occur most Saturday mornings during the season. AROUND TOWN Smoothie King, off Old Milton Parkway, generously provided smoothies to runners through the summer and fall too! I enjoy grabbing breakfast from the Nest Café in downtown Alpharetta. DIGGING DEEP My runners are motivated during training by their desire to be faster and stronger in their next race. They are always seeking improvement, whether it is a time or mental aspect. Seeing them achieve their goals and being a part of their development as a runner and adolescent makes me stay positive. As a coach, I believe it is easy to stay positive when you see how much of an impact you are making in the kids’ lives. It is an incredible privilege to have the opportunity to coach the runners, and I am always so proud of them.
Varsity Coach Girls Lacrosse and Varsity Girls Flag Football, Alpharetta High School Director of the Georgia Outlaws travel lacrosse program
PRACTICE AND REPEAT In the high school season, we practice every day after school for two hours. A typical week also includes two games. The regular season has 18 games. We begin practicing in late January and typically finish up in mid-May.
AROUND TOWN My wife and I typically go to downtown Alpharetta (Coalition or Smokejack BBQ ) or occasionally to Avalon (Marlowe’s Tavern or Antico). DIGGING DEEP Working with teens can be challenging. I try to tell them that coming to practices after school ought to be the best two hours of their day (it is for me). You can forget school work, drama, family or home life issues and come out, compete and work with teammates to get better. It can be an escape from the everyday pressures that teenagers face (way more pressure than I had when I was their age). We want to compete hard and do our best to win, but there are a ton of life lessons that can come with being part of a team. We gain as much from the losses as we do from the wins. Motivation is different for each kid and it’s my job to try to tap into that to maximize their potential. I stay positive by celebrating the success of our team. Success extends way beyond the scoreboard or the win/loss standings. I’ve had the great fortune to coach some incredible young ladies. As the father of a young daughter, they’re helping me to know how to navigate the world of a teenager, when my daughter gets to be that age.

I Didn’t Do the Thing Today: Letting Go of Productivity Guilt by Madeleine Dore Do you struggle to complete a never-ending daily list of tasks? Wondering how other people seemed to have it all figured out, Madeleine Dore spent five years interviewing people she admired to uncover their secrets for being more productive, successful, and prolific. She learned there isn’t a perfect recipe for getting things done. The ideal routine that maximizes every minute of the day is a myth, and constantly holding ourselves to unattainable daily standards is simply exhausting us. Dore encourages us to stop comparing ourselves to others, to become more realistic about our expectations, and overcome our constant worry about wasted time. Letting go of your productivity guilt and embracing the unexpected creative moments that each day brings can broaden your definition of a day well spent, bringing deep connection and fulfillment.

Fully covered canopy for outdoor dining experience Postcards: The Rise and Fall of the World’s First Social Network by Lydia Pyne In 1909 the United States Post Office was $17 million in debt ($483 million today). Two years later, the Post Office’s profit was $200,000 ($5.7 million today.) How? Postcards! The hundreds of millions of postcards Americans were sending during the Golden Age of Postcards (1905-1920) became a lifeline for the Post Office. Lydia Pyne takes readers on a global journey through revolutions, social movements, scientific and technological discoveries, and sentimental personal connections. This book also examines the details of postcards as the first worldwide social network. Postcards is a marvelous, in-depth analysis and thought-generating look into how a version of almost everything you see on your current digital social media networks was first produced, composed, and mailed as a postcard.
