From Diagnosis to a New Mission East Cobb resident, rock and roll superstar, and my friend, John Driskell Hopkins was diagnosed with ALS on December 22, 2021. Although it took a couple of months for John to get his head wrapped around what that would mean for him personally; John and his wife Jennifer jumped into action to form a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. In that most precious of moments; “Hop On A Cure” in support of ALS was founded. Their dedication to changing the face of ALS had begun. Once everything was figured out, John or Hop, as he is lovingly referred to by family, friends, and fans worldwide, made the news public by sharing his diagnosis while surrounded by his friends from the Zac Brown Band on May 21, 2022.

WAYNE’S PRO TIPS FOR THE BEST SMARTPHONE CHRISTMAS MORNING PHOTOS. 1. Be sure to clean your camera’s lens. This is most often forgotten. You handle your phone hundreds of times a day, so you are bound to have smudges on the lens. 2. Use lots of natural light. Open the curtains and shutters to let in as much light as possible. In most cases it’s best to avoid using the flash. 3. Avoid clutter in the scene. For portraits it is best to select a spot that is free from anything distracting that takes the attention away from your subjects. 4. Avoid distortion, keeping the camera at eye level of your subject is best. Get down low for the little ones, and the pets. Pointing the camera up or down makes things look out of proportion. 5. Candid photos make great memories. Be a fly on the wall. Some of the best shots happen spontaneously. 6. Don’t forget yourself! Use the self timer feature and get into those family shots. 7. Most importantly, have fun, live in the moment and enjoy your family time. Wayne and Julie's adorable grandchildren with the big man himself.
ACL: WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR? J&W: The Lord has really blessed us. We have so much to be thankful for including our love for each other and that we get to spend this time of our life together everyday, living, loving and working together. Our family is happy and healthy and achieving their goals. Our business is doing well, and we get to meet so many interesting people from all walks of life. It is not work when you love what you do. My mother was placed in assisted living out of state this year. She is battling Alzheimer’s disease, but she is comfortable, happy and living in her moment and that is all we can hope for. We have great phone conversations. She still remembers who we are and laughs a lot. We are simply grateful for each day.

Songs to broaden your holiday hymn horizons I dread the holiday season. Despite my love for routine, I despise the rollout of the same holiday songs that burst my eardrums come November 30th. My saving grace comes in the form of my sister’s addictive cookies, spruce scented candles, and a select few albums and songs that haven’t been blaring through the Target speakers for the past 15+ years. My hope is that my cynical attitude hasn’t turned you off to considering these hopeful additions to your holiday tunage, while this writer kicks back and prays you also enjoy a non-alcoholic hot toddy next to your LED fueled yule log.

If you love classic crooners, try “Hark!” by Andrew Bird as a modern take Andrew Bird is an incredible musician who adds tons of layers and texture to his music. His take on a holiday album is just as rich as the rest of his discography, but with a festive edge. The album would make a great soundtrack for decking the halls or sugaring plums. In short, I highly recommend this beautiful and fun record!

If you wanna know what my favorite holiday songs are…
I used to listen to this album with my boss and his daughter at the record store I worked at in Queens. It’s corny and cheesy which is exactly how I like my holiday music. Whenever I hear it, I think of the little record store girl dancing between the stacks trying to take off her shoes and show off her socks while laughing mercilessly as her dad chased her around the bins. This is a great, and family-friendly album, for every and anyone!
This is my all-time favorite piece of holiday music. While it speaks to my need for unconventional mashups, it also satiates my Grinch-sized holiday spirit! Though surely not appropriate for children, this album (only accessible via YouTube) borrows from some of the most popular Christmas jingles and transforms them into hilarious and melodic, cranberry-flavored juicy beats.

Every now and then, a doctor meets a patient who leaves a lasting impression on him and even inspires him. When Peter Moseley came to The Graivier Center for facial reconstruction after a bout with skin cancer, he met Dr. Hill and Dr. Graivier who immediately were impressed by his countenance and solid temperament. They later discovered the deep convictions that buoy Peter and his family and wanted to share his story. Peter Moseley has been a resident of Cumming for the last 37 years. He has always been involved with our community, from putting his children through the Forsyth County School System and being a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of South Forsyth, to coaching various youth sports teams. Peter and his wife Shelby joined the board of Childspring International and volunteer as host parents. She would often travel on mission trips and found that many children needed surgeries that they were unable to perform abroad. Childspring International was founded to help children in need by bringing them to the U.S. to perform life-changing surgeries. Childspring International is renowned around the globe, helping more than 5,000 children to date. They are headquartered right here in Atlanta, but with the relationships they developed around the world, they now have connections to also bring children to neighboring countries where the dollar carries further. Plus, they have developed solid partnerships in-country via local physician education so that even more children receive access to reliable surgery. The Moseley family has personally hosted children and families on several occasions, sometimes for up to seven months. They have assisted children who came to receive prosthetics, multiple heart surgeries, orthopedic and spine surgeries and much more. One boy lost his arms after a hyena attack and came to Atlanta for two prosthetics and more than six scalp surgeries. The majority of patients undergo lifesaving heart surgeries. The foundation hosts several events during the year to raise funds for their missions. In the month of August alone, CSI helped to provide 25 surgeries for children from four different countries. Volunteers are always needed at Childspring International as hosts, sponsors, event organizers and office assistants. Peter and Shelby might just inspire you to change a child’s life too. Now, nine years later, the mother of two has expanded and recently taken over the Sandy Springs location in addition to her Alpharetta one. Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in Las Vegas in 1997 by Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz. It has grown to more than 430 franchised and corporate bakeries in more than 40 states and Canada. Bakeries offer handcrafted bundt cakes in a variety of flavors and sizes, such as bite-sized Bundtinis, miniature Bundlets and 8 and 10-inch bundt cakes, plus decorations and gift options for all and any occasion. The whole concept of Nothing Bundt Cakes is based on the premise of bringing joy to people. Not just for special occasions, but for any occasion or “just because”. The bakery is a one-stop shop, carrying creative decorations and small gifts that can be accessorized and displayed with the Bundlets.

But more than the bakery, Gloria found happiness in community outreach and being incredibly involved in the Alpharetta community. It was there she found an organization called Lionheart Works, which aligned with the hopes and dreams she held for her son, who is on the autism spectrum. Proudly, she says she has employed five people successfully over the years by partnering with Lionheart Works. It is all about finding the right place for these people. Showing them that they can do what others can and fostering their assets. Although taking over the Sandy Springs location means double the workforce and a lot more work, she couldn’t be more thrilled. “I am so excited to get involved in the Sandy Springs community as I have done in Milton and Alpharetta,” she says. And with the

recent expansion, her husband was able to leave his corporate job and join the family business. She says, “I now serve the North Fulton market, which spans the GA 400 North Fulton Corridor from Exit 2 thru Exit 12!” Owning these bakeries has become a truly positive experience for Gloria, one that continues to bring her joy. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
