Happy June, friends THIS PAGE SHOULD BE BLANK. This issue was perilously close to being unpublished, each story unfinished and photos just dangling up in the cloud. I’ve been distracted, detained and otherwise engaged most of the month, my work way down at the bottom of the list of priorities. Sorry, but it’s true. You see, I became a grandmother!

That’s Theodore James Collins Spearman in the picture. He was born April 19, 8 pounds and 10 ounces, 21 inches with a glowingly high Apgar Score. He came early and fast and caught us all by surprise, which added to the rawness of emotion that we have all been experiencing. For various reasons that add up to more than an editor’s letter, my daughter was in Atlanta when baby Teddy rocketed into the world and now he and his parents are staying with us a few weeks, filling our home and hearts with more joy than I’d ever thought possible. I sit staring into his deep blue eyes for hours, rocking in the same rocking chair I lulled my own three babies to sleep in years ago. In fact, rather than pushing copy through to my designer, I pushed Teddy around the block in the stroller my husband hastily (but properly) assembled. When I should have been interviewing the men featured in this issue, I was whispering sweet nothings into the baby’s tiny ear, sure he was hanging on my every word. I am besotted.

When it comes to creating an outdoor living experience that comfortably welcomes friends and family during the summer and year-round, think beyond the grass and consider incorporating elements that turn your humble backyard into an entertainment and relaxation station. “Folks are wanting to invest more in their backyard living,” says Chris Sears, president of Sears Smith & Associates, a full-service landscape architecture firm offering architectural landscape design and hardscape construction for commercial and residential properties. “Whether sport courts, artificial turf or even newer contemporary materials, such as cable railing or glass partitions on decks, there are nice higher-end elements that used to be more reserved for commercial projects that people are seeing and wanting at their own residence.” A recent project included a waterfall, sport court, outdoor jacuzzi, deck, and a firepit in the backyard, as well as a tennis wall on the side of the house. Other options include adding a bocce court, a putting green, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen or a sport court that can easily welcome a game of basketball or shuffleboard. “Basketball and multiuse sport courts have become popular,” says Sears. “They come in a multitude of colors and can be custom designed.” “We prefer not to fight nature, so we design for what we know works,” says Sears. “That means taking all of the microclimatic factors into mind, such as shade, tree competition, drainage, intended usage and many others so that we leave the homeowner with a design that will work.” 12

A CENTURY BEFORE THIS DEEP-WATER BAY ON A LAKE LANIER PENINSULA BECAME A PREMIER LAKEFRONT COMMUNITY, IT WAS WILDERNESS— THERE WERE FEW PEOPLE LIVING IN THIS REMOTE VALLEY, AND UNDEVELOPED LAND WAS PLENTIFUL AND CHEAP. When the Great Depression devastated the United States economy in the 1930s, across much of the country, you could barely give land away. Rafe Banks, III, a sixth-generation Hall County resident and prominent area attorney, recalls that this is when his grandfather handed down a large parcel of land to Rafe’s father. “It was in the middle of nowhere and wasn’t worth much at the time. Mother tells the story that when my father took her to see it, they drove, and drove, and drove, and got to 'Nowhere,' and there it was.” Although this area in Southern Hall County would remain largely undeveloped for decades, in the 1950s The Army Corp of Engineers built the Buford Dam and flooded the 37,000-acre valley to create Lake Sidney Lanier. Much of the Banks’ land ended up under water, and the Banks family subsequently ended up with several miles of shoreline. Over time, they built a lake house, a dock, and a family tradition that transcended generations. “It was idyllic—a Norman Rockwell place where we would gather with friends and family and have fun for many years. Banks, who helped build the house when he was a high-school senior, has fond memories of fraternity parties here in the 70s, and special memories of later teaching his four children to ski here. “We had 30-plus acres to roam, and we would run all through the cove and play on the water until dark.
