I had my fairytale story but come on, that was a long time ago. Valentine’s Day can leave us feeling lonely or loved. Or, both. I’m very fortunate that my husband and I can celebrate simply by having dinner together, toasting to our resilience, shared history and how we agree on important things, like going to bed early and staying in on Valentine’s Day. Take that, Hallmark! This month on the 14th, I’ll actually be in Northern Michigan with my girlfriends on a snowshoeing and winery tour through the Leelanau Peninsula. My husband loves me so lets me go. That’s my kind of love story. I hope the bungee jumpers make it to 30 years!

NEEDY FAMILIES SERVED BY NFCC North Fulton Community Charities’ (NFCC) annual holiday assistance program served over 900 families and 1,800 children this year. The holiday assistance program began with Warm Coat Day followed by a Thanksgiving Food Program, a Sponsored Families Program and Santa Shop. Holiday Baskets were also provided to local senior residents in November and December. This year over 150 seniors participated in the basket program. This year almost 1,400 individuals volunteered for the holiday assistance program. BOTTLES OF BUBBLY. I was cutting into the deep tangerine yolks of my made-to-order eggs during my first breakfast at The First Roma Arte in Rome when I spied the self-serve bottles of prosecco. The first thing that came to my mind is, "WWAD?" — that is, “What Would Audrey Do?” Of course, I helped myself to the bubbles. After all, I'd come to the Italian capital to follow in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn's character, Princess Ann, in the movie Roman Holiday. My goal was to experience all the city had to offer, princess-style. Over four days, I followed an itinerary that included sights from the iconic Hepburn film, as well as a few experiences I thought Audrey's character might have indulged in today.

The hotel I’d selected, The First Roma Arte, prides itself on the 150 contemporary artworks that decorate the property. Every suite is staged by an artist and becomes your own private gallery. After being greeted at check-in with a complimentary glass of bubbly, I was escorted to my suite, which featured lush carpets, a cloud-like bed covered in smooth white sheets, a plush blue velvet sofa, shelves lined with books, and art works of swirled pops of colors. It was Roman chic and cozy all at once. In addition to the exquisite breakfast offered each morning, the hotel is home to the Michelin-star restaurant, Acquolina. Dinner there my first evening took me on a seafood journey that started with an exquisite preparation of octopus followed by a delicate dish of fresh pasta with sea urchin. Swoon. Get a guide. In the movie, the princess relies on Joe to show her the sights of the city. I had Joanna, a guide from City Wonders. Since tour guides are plentiful in Roma, it’s often hard to tell which companies are reputable. So, I’d recommend booking a tour with a company like City Wonders in advance. (This is a must if you want to visit the Colosseum. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck in line for hours just waiting to get in.) I opted for the Best of Rome walking tour, as it covered several of the spots I mentioned earlier that are featured in the movie. It's best to find a guide before visiting the Colosseum

Now, couples are expected to leap from love to the business of marriage with little or no discussion of (or guidance in) the nuts and bolts of running a household, family or relationship. “It’s important to define the economic workings of a marriage, to protect assets as well as outline the non-financial terms,” says Brenner. “Talk about kids, those already in the family from different marriages, and those yet to be born. Protect them.” She notes that custody and child support can only be decided by the court at the time of divorce. “But, think about these relationships.” In our society, she says, we focus on the rights of empowered adults and don’t always look at children as members of our “dysfunctional tribe.” It’s this tribe that Brenner loves to dissect and protect. The typical family unit is changing, and a prenup will buoy a couple and all their dysfunction in divorce. To write a prenup, the couple shares a list of their assets. “There is no boilerplate. The contract is flexible, negotiable and we write it together.” She has included pet custody in prenups and sees a trend toward including a health declaration (STD free or not?) as a part of the contract. “It’s a PrenupUP - there are many new ideas for couples to consider,” says Brenner whose firm bills hourly and suggests everyone review any contract (including the prenup that she helps write) with his/her own attorney before signing. “We have a hard time thinking about the business aspect of marriage. We are supposed to believe love conquers all and that money doesn’t enter the equation. But so many of divorces are rooted in money politics,” says Brenner. Already on board with a reassuring prenup on file? Note that with changes in 2019 tax laws, alimony is no longer deductible, so you may want to adjust any figures in your contract. Happily married with wills, pensions, insurance policies in place? Alpharetta Laughs with—and at—Amy Lyle NORTH FULTON AUTHOR, COMEDIENNE/ACTOR AND SCREENWRITER SAYS MUCH OF HER FODDER COMES FROM PEOPLE AND THINGS IN AND AROUND ALPHARETTA AMY LYLE IS A MESS! But it's ok. With a new book on shelves and making the bestseller list on Amazon, the comedienne/actor/ screenwriter uses people, places and things from her familiar turf in Alpharetta as the background for her stories and writings. Born and raised in Marietta, the Marietta in Ohio, she likes to add, Lyle is making a living, making fun of the things we all take for granted. Case in point, her new book, We’re All A Mess. It’s OK, where she collects short stories and funny one-liners from more than 100 contributors who recount and relive their most hilarious failures, indignities and embarrassing moments. "We’re All A Mess. It’s OK captures life’s more absurd moments honestly and without filter,” explains Lyle. “It's very personal essays highlight the grainier sides of being human and imperfect." From internet dating disasters to those strange co-workers and vacations that went wrong, Lyle talks a language we all can understand. Her inspirations? They include much of what is happening in Alpharetta, North Fulton, and anything Lyle and her husband, Peter, their four teenagers and large dogs come into contact with in their daily lives. "I worked as a sales manager and corporate trainer for Randstad (Alpharetta office) for over a decade, located on North Point Parkway," offered the bubbly Lyle. "For lunch, I'd rotate between The Corner Deli, Volcano Asian Bistro and Wildflour as they all were less than five minutes from my office." Lyle said she's lucky she doesn't have to venture far to get ideas for her next book and other projects which include the screenplay, #fakemom, a female-centric 24

MARCH 2019 MARKS THE 30TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR THAT THE AMERICAN CRAFT COUNCIL (ACC) HAS PRESENTED ITS BELOVED CRAFT SHOW IN ATLANTA, WHICH AGAIN WILL FEATURE MORE THAN 230 FINE CRAFT ARTISANS FROM ACROSS THE U.S., including 30 from Georgia. As the largest juried fine craft show in the Southeast, the American Craft Show has long demonstrated how artisan craft fits into everyday life, from fashion to furnishings. The 2019 show, at the Cobb Galleria Centre March 15-17, will emphasize the art of slow, careful craft making in a variety of genres with its popular, interactive Let’s Make inspiration stations. One of this year’s chosen new Atlanta artists, is Firoozeh Bowden from Alpharetta. Firoozeh specializes in creating wearable art and accessories and has been working with metal for virtually all of her adult life. She studied medical technology because, she says, “My Persian parents wanted me to be practical and to study something with a good income and have art as a hobby. When they saw that creating was my true passion, they gave their approval when I switched to industrial design.” Firoozeh also notes, “Industrial design was good background for the metal creations that I make, and working in clothing boutiques gave me insight into fashion and what women want, especially what they couldn’t find. The boutiques and department stores didn’t carry exciting jewelry and accessories, and everything looked the same.
