Cheers!
OCTOBER 2017
A
lpharetta Lifestyle is proud to be a sponsor again for Polo in the Pines, a two-day festival honoring cancer survivors among us and raising funds for much-needed research while celebrating the great sport of polo here in the green Atlanta fields. When our lifestyle guru Sean O'Keefe came to us three years ago and suggested we collaborate with the PIP planners as media partner, we leaped at the opportunity to contribute, in some small way. This month, I'll dust off my fanciest hat (that is, Darce Richardson, our coordinating publisher will dust off an extra hat for me) and we will all join the fun October 7 and 8. While Saturday's event is a sit-down dinner (tickets still available), Sunday's brunch is a family-affair with bites from some of our favorite chefs and a more casual flair. Please join us for the festivities! Cheers to all of you fighting hard for something you believe in!

S
ometimes a single conversation can change your life’s purpose. That was certainly the case for Polo in the Pines founder Tina Fowler. In 2012, Tina was at
Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center with her mother, Sharon Knight, for treatment of leiomyosarcoma—a cancer Sharon had been battling for 20+ years. That’s 20 years of motherhood, birthdays, holidays and life laced with treatments, surgeries, fears and questions. While the journey was often challenging, Sharon always found the bright side, proclaiming, “Life is about choices, and I choose to turn this negative into a positive.” It was that day that doctors stressed the importance of research as they searched for a cure. Inspired by her mother’s positivity, Tina made the choice to find joy while working to fund cancer research that could impact countless families facing the same battle. With her heart of gold, Tina forged ahead and launched what would ultimately become Polo in the Pines, an exciting polofilled weekend that would fund leiomyosarcoma research in honor of her mother. So, why polo? Not only do the stately horses, green pastures, and Pretty Woman polo attire provide the most amazing ambiance, but also the sport is historically philanthropic. Georgia's distinctive towering pines canopy Atlanta, giving it the nickname, 'City in a Forest,' providing a beautiful home for the Atlanta Regional Polo Center. Nestled in Vinings on an inviting stretch of the Chattahoochee River, the polo fields offer the perfect setting for supporters to enjoy a day of fun and philanthropy. This beautiful backdrop drew the lifelong equestrian, Tina, and connected her to Jolie Liston, the backbone of Atlanta’s thriving polo community--thus helping make the idea of a polo fundraiser a reality.
POLO IN THE ARTICLE MARGARET SULLIVAN | PHOTOGRAPHY LIZ ERIKSON
Now, five years later, patrons flock to the beautiful polo fields to sip champagne and enjoy polo matches, while funding critical cancer research. Each year, the organization celebrates a different honoree and benefits research for the honoree’s diagnosis. This year is uniquely honoring Saville and Lilia Sullivan, two sisters who were each diagnosed with different types of brain cancer in 2016. The weekend will kick off on Saturday, October 8, where the Sullivan sisters’ remarkable story will be told to a crowd of over 400 supporters with the soft sounds of polo mallets whacking and horses galloping in the background. To top off the weekend, Sunday’s Atlanta Brunch Festival will feature more polo matches, as some of the city’s top restaurants compete for the title of Atlanta “Best Brunch Bite.” All proceeds from the weekend will go directly to the Sharon McCollum Knight, Polo in the Pines Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation. The fund will directly benefit brain tumor research at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in honor of the Sullivan sisters. In addition to all of their generous sponsors, Polo in the Pines is incredibly grateful to Jolie Liston and the Atlanta Regional Polo Center for making this incredible weekend possible. For more tickets and information, visit PoloInThePines.com. Be sure to give a nod to all the generous sponsors, listed on the Editor's Page. 16

PINES MEET JOLIE LISTON
Jolie has played in every Polo in the Pines match, and you'll see her again this year. LP: How long have you been involved in polo in ATL? JL: I started playing polo in 1980. My father played and introduced me to the sport. LP: How has the polo scene changed in our state? JL: Polo in Atlanta has become more diverse. There are now four polo clubs in the Atlanta area and it’s not just for the very wealthy anymore. Anyone can participate at various levels. I also see a lot more women and kids playing than ever before. LP: Tell us about your horses. JL: There are too many to list for a short article! A few that are special to me are Alabama, Georgia, Pikachu and Snippet. They are the young horses I am currently training for polo. I rescued Alabama and Georgia from a kill pen in Louisiana, which makes training them even more special. Philomena is another special horse as she is one of my best. LP: Why is polo such an exciting sport to play? JL: Different people will give you different answers to this question but for me, the relationship between the horse and rider makes polo exciting. We ask a lot of our horses and I consider them part of the team. Racing down the field at top speed chasing a little white ball can also be an adrenaline rush! hen Johns Creek resident Retta Clark walked into Sewell Appliance in Sandy Springs, she had no idea she would win a gorgeous new 36” Wolf
range cooktop. She was one of many Lifestyle Publications readers who entered the
giveaway just by stopping in to discuss kitchen renovation plans. Clark loves to cook. It has been a source of pride and joy for her, even more so after the death of her beloved husband of 36 years in 2016. Her kitchen had always been the gathering spot for friends, family and neighbors. And now her wonderful new professional Wolf range helps her continue this coveted role. “I love it,” Clark exclaimed. ”I've never won anything before so this was a total surprise. I'm artistic and I love creating things. I have a real good time cooking,” she says. The crew at Sewell are sharing the latest design and technologies with readers like Clark and have helped many of them to create the kitchens of their dreams. Sewell salesperson Tom Styer assisted Clark in picking out the appliances for her project. She was extremely complimentary toward their whole team. “The people there were so nice and helpful,” Clark says. Builder Specialties, which owns Sewell Appliance, provides better home solutions including appliances throughout the South. For this contest, they teamed up with their counterparts at Sub-Zero and Wolf. Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are known for their legendary professional heritage, power and finesse as well as precise cooking control. They help users enjoy more adventurous, satisfying cooking and they often become iconic centerpieces. For 80+ years, these appliances have been the choice of professionals. They have now become a favorite of discerning home cooks everywhere, including Retta Clark in Johns Creek, Georgia. Rob Maxam, vice president of sales for Sub Zero Group Southeast, was thrilled to hear about the outcome of the contest. “We wanted to run a contest to create excitement about local kitchen remodel projects, Maxam explains. “We are a luxury premium brand, and we know that some people consider us out of range for their budget. We felt that it would be fun to offer up a chance to work with a Lifestyle magazine reader and complete their project, regardless of size or budget, with the best name in cooking appliances. And that’s what we did!” Visit Sewell at 7455 Throwbridge Rd. SewellAppliance.com

is the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park where the birthplace, childhood school, beloved Texas White House ranch and resting place of our 36th president grace the rolling hills along the Pedernales River. Touring the ranch where time stands still at 1960, nine hulking televisions, overhead lights galore and 72 telephone lines (including phones at the President’s bedside and under his place at the long dinner table) remind us this man worked at a blistering pace night and day. He had a standing order with the local Cadillac dealer who brought him a new white convertible every year. Two are on display in the garage next to the still-active airstrip and working barn. His herd of 150 beautiful little Hereford Longhorn cattle continue to thrive (with the help of breeding efforts to keep them circa 1960) and you can snuggle them in their tidy corral. was one of those kids who needed some help. I understand what people go through. I want to impact the community in a way that is life

there for them. We must bring them hope so they want to be better as students, knowing they can become anything they want. We must give them a
safe, secure environment so they can dream of a better life. Hopefully, they can realize those dreams and then they can turn around and help others when they are older.

ith our first annual Driver’s Notebook Cars of the Year Awards coming up where the most
impressive model in various categories receives Lifestyle Publication's accolades, the all-new Honda TYPE R is a definite nominee in the Sport and All-New categories. There is no doubt that Honda has maintained a stellar reputation in the auto industry due its reliability and highly skilled workmanship for more than 30 years. Now, answering the demand for a more rebellious, aggressive and muscle-flexing addition to the family, the automaker boldly introduces the all-new Type R. An expansion of the popular Civic trim introduced exactly 20 years ago in 1997, the Type R was built in the United Kingdom and brought to the U.S. to set our roads ablaze and constantly turn heads. Its muscular frame is embellished with Honda’s exclusive scarlet “H” emblem, a front air curtain, a large rear wing, a three-pipe exhaust system, an LED lighting package, 20-inch alloy wheels and five vibrant colors selected by the most popular in the sports car sector—Championship White, Rallye Red, Aegean Blue, Crystal Black, Pearl and Polished Metal. It's presence immediately exudes speed. The Type R-exclusive 2.0-liter, four-cylinder racing engine is a combination of Honda’s revered VTEC and Turbo classifications. It is powered by 306 horses and a maximum torque of 295 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm under the hood to further justifying its beastly frame. Paying homage to the sports car traditionalist, this model boasts a smooth transitioning six-speed manual transmission complete with an aluminum knob, a “Rev Match System,” a “dual-axis” strut front suspension, D-shaped steering wheel, three driving modes—Comfort, Sport and +R—and highly responsive braking. The cloth red and black sport seats; high-definition, seven-inch display with Apple CarPlay; and Honda’s 12-speaker premium sound system booming 540 watts of power ultimately has four adults comfortably strapped in for the epitome of a joy ride. Graciously priced at just under $34,000 with all the embellishments (everything comes standard), Honda successfully realized the dream car of its loyal following while simultaneously winning over a legion of new believers. Fuel Economy: 22 city/28 highway Base Price: $33,900 (Everything is standard) For more information, visit Honda.com.

Parting Thoughts
I
t was eight years ago when Special Olympics Georgia Forsyth County was introduced to Britt Hall of Alpharetta. He is a Special Olympics Georgia athlete, Georgia Aquarium employee and avid Georgia sports fan. “The first sport I started competing in with Special Olympics
was softball. I was with the Forsyth Golden Gloves, and we were a pretty good team,” says Britt, reflecting on his first state games. Since then, the multi-sport athlete has competed in much more than softball. Britt has gone on to compete and excel in bocce, basketball, athletics, table tennis, volleyball and flag football during his Special Olympics Georgia career. Britt's father, Jack Hall, says his son loves Special Olympics. “Athletics has always been one of his favorite sports to compete in. He likes the different competitions within athletics, especially the dash races. The 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash are really great to see him compete and grow in.” Britt adds, “I like athletics, but I am excited for flag football this year. We are going to play just as well as the Falcons." Each year, Britt and his teammates return to Emory University as the Special Olympics Georgia Forsyth County Mean Machine, one of two flag football teams from Special Olympics Georgia Forsyth County. Despite the word “mean” being in their name, Britt assures us that their focus is not to be mean to their competitors. “We want to win the gold, but we want to be nice to the other teams and encourage them. They are our friends and have worked just as hard as we have for the state competitions,” Britt says. While athletes are encouraged to try their very best and go for the gold, Special Olympics Georgia focuses on the lessons and ideals of sportsmanship and friendship during competitions. Jack says, “Special Olympics Georgia not only brings out the inner-athlete with many of these children and adults, but gives them the reassurance and sense of community to not look at their competitors as indi-
viduals they have to beat, but as friends." “Britt has always been a good team player, but he is also very competitive. Special Olympics Georgia has helped him gain confidence as an athlete, while showing him how to cheer on his teammates and the opposing athletes.” “I’ve learned a lot from being in Special Olympics Georgia. I think there is a lesson for everyone who competes, volunteers, or watches the Summer Games this year,” says Britt. 50
