Make a Statement!

September 2026 PUBLISHER

There's something powerful about walking into a room and immediately noticing style that isn't trying to blend in. Maybe it's the bold jacket, the perfectly tailored suit, a pair of vintage boots, or a vibrant lipstick. Maybe it's a home with an unexpected front door color or a living room that feels effortlessly elegant because it reflects the people who live there instead of the latest trend. The best style always makes a statement. Not because it's loud, but because it's authentic. This month, we're celebrating style in all its forms, from fashion and beauty to architecture, interior design, and the spaces we create for the people we love. While trends come and go, true style has never been about following the crowd. It's about having the confidence to express who you are. I love seeing that confidence throughout our community. It's the local boutique owner who helps someone discover the outfit that makes them feel unstoppable. The interior designer who transforms a house into a reflection of a family's personality. The craftsman who believes every detail matters. The artist who sees color where others see a blank canvas. They all have one thing in common: they're creating something memorable. And isn't that what we're all trying to do? Every day, we make choices that tell our story. The way we dress for an important meeting. The way we welcome guests into our home. The way we present our business. Even the way we care for ourselves sends a message before we ever say a word. What statement are you making? I hope this issue inspires you to think beyond what's fashionable and instead embrace what feels true to you. Wear the color you've always been afraid to try. Add the piece of art that makes you smile every time you walk by. Refresh a room. Reinvent a look. Support the local businesses that help bring your vision to life. After all, style isn't about impressing other people. It's about creating a life that feels uniquely your own. Here's to making a statement that is unmistakably yours.

DON' T T E L L M A M A B A ND TWENTY YEARS OF MUSIC, MEMORIES, AND BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATTI FAULHABER

12

B ACK STAGE | L I FE + C ULT U RE

For nearly two decades, the Don't Tell Mama Band has been proving that great music has the power to unite people. Since its founding in 2006 by husbandand-wife team Glenn and Maria Lightford, the Dallas/Fort Worth-based band has grown into one of North Texas' premier live entertainment acts, earning a loyal following through exceptional musicianship, high-energy performances, and a commitment to creating memorable experiences for every audience. Together, Glenn and Maria built Don't Tell Mama from a shared passion for music and a vision of creating a professional band that would deliver the timeless

songs people love while making every guest feel welcome. Glenn, the band's trumpet player and vocalist, and Maria, whose talents on percussion, flute, and vocals bring another layer of artistry to the group, have worked side by side as equal partners, both musically and in building the band's success. Their collaboration has been the foundation of Don't Tell Mama's longevity and continued growth. Over the years, Don't Tell Mama has evolved into an impressive 11-piece ensemble known for its outstanding musicianship, dynamic vocals, and versatile performances. Their expansive repertoire spans more than six decades of music, featuring Motown, R&B, funk, soul, disco, classic rock, country, Latin, jazz, and today's Top 40 favorites. From weddings and corporate events to festivals, nonprofit galas, and private celebrations, the band delivers a full-production experience featuring powerful vocals, talented musicians, and a signature horn section that keeps audiences engaged from the first song to the final note. At the heart of Don't Tell Mama is a belief that music belongs to everyone. Their performances are designed to bring people together regardless of age, race, gender, or economic background. The band's diverse song selection creates a shared experience where multiple generations can celebrate together, dance together, and enjoy the universal connection that only live music can create. Whether performing for a large crowd or an intimate gathering, Don't Tell Mama creates an atmosphere where everyone feels included. The band's continued success is also fueled by its exceptional lineup of talented performers. Lead vocalist Joi Mei Clark brings powerful vocals and a commanding stage presence, while newest member Kera Lee adds fresh energy, soulful vocals, and a vibrant personality that complements the band's dynamic

sound. Her addition represents an exciting new chapter as Don't Tell Mama continues to evolve while staying true to the musical traditions that have made them a North Texas favorite. The current lineup includes founders Glenn Lightford (trumpet and vocals) and Maria Lightford (percussion, flute, and vocals); lead vocalists Joi Mei Clark and Kera Lee; Borden Byrd (guitar and vocals); James Martin (bass guitar); Blake McElroy (drums and vocals); Jim Collins (keyboards and vocals); Rich Wonders (trombone, guitar, and vocals); Jack Rowland (trumpet and vocals); and Taylor Duty (saxophone and vocals). Supporting every performance behind the scenes are Jim Duty, the band's sound engineer, and Charles Clark, the dedicated roadie who helps ensure each show runs smoothly. As Glenn and Maria continue leading the band into its next chapter, their mission remains the same: create unforgettable live entertainment that celebrates connection, community, and the joy of music. Nonprofit of the Month The Art of Coping Supports Kids’ and Teens’ Mental Health Through Art and Dance Expression When life starts to overwhelm us and we’re unsure where to turn, ideally, a professional therapist can offer guidance, or a trusted friend can lend a listening ear. But for some children, visual and performing arts can bring an immediate source of peace. That’s where a local nonprofit, The Art of Coping, is working to make a difference. Founded by sisters Ashton and Averly Burns, The Art of Coping helps support mental health in kids and teens through the expression of art and dance. The Art of Coping accomplishes their mission through donations of cope kits and somatic movement classes. Each part of their mission is led by the sisters, artists and dancers themselves, who know how important it is to have access to art alongside healthy coping strategies. Ashton’s focus is on visual arts through the organization’s cope kits and coloring books. Ashton designed two coloring books that feature calming illustrations alongside coping skills to help children and teens manage stressful situations. The coloring books are sold as a buy-one-give-one, with a book donated to a child in need with each purchase. The cope kits have fidget toys, journals, art supplies, and more that children can use to express themselves creatively. Ashton explains, “We have donated a few cope kits

already. One to a girl who is often in and out of the hospital, so she brings it with her. We donated other kits to siblings that are going through a hard time with their family.” Averly’s focus is on performing arts, and she leads donation-based somatic movement classes with The Art of Coping. These classes are a body-based practice that supports emotional healing through intentional movement, sensory awareness, and nervous system regulation. It was a contemporary dance class that helped open Averly’s eyes to the healing aspect of dance and led her to exploring the ways that physiology, biomechanics, behavioral neuroscience, and somatic theories can work together to help with emotional regulation. Averly’s classes are offered virtually to kids and adults; anyone who wants to practice connecting their bodies with mental health and emotional regulation is welcome to join. With the proceeds from the donations, The Art of Coping hopes to purchase more cope kits to serve more children in need.

With both services, Ashton and Averly are working to support children who might be going through challenges similar to those the sisters experienced while growing up. Ashton recalls, “I experienced trauma as a child, and it took a toll on me mentally. As a result, I started therapy when I was eight years old. For me, art impacted the way I was able to communicate and helped me when I didn't have words. “I was always scared to speak because I thought I would get in trouble, but through the expression of art, I was able to show how I felt and actually be able to understand my own feelings and ways to communicate. “We founded The Art of Coping because there are many therapists

and centers that helped us, and we wanted to give back to children and teens who are going through similar experiences but don’t have the resources to turn to visual or performance art. It’s our way of saying thank you to everyone who helped us while also making a difference for the next generation.” To support the Burns sisters as they make a difference, follow @_theartofcoping_ on Instagram and Facebook. Join a donation-based somatic movement class, purchase a buy-one-giveone coloring book, or donate items at their next cope kit supplies drive to help children in our community use art to heal mentally

Style in a home rarely stops at the walls. It shows up in the rooms we use, the routines we repeat, and the surfaces underfoot. Alliance Direct comes to flooring from a family place: owners Amanda and Craig Martin represent four generations in the trades, years in construction, and a belief that good work lasts. Utility spaces and work areas are often treated as purely functional. The right floor can make an overlooked space feel finished, intentional, and ready for daily life (or resale), whether it's a garage, a laundry room, or patio. CONTINUED >

“Leave things better than you found them.” Amanda added that the strongest sign of success is equally simple: “The best compliment is a referral.”

22

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

A floor finish is both a style decision and a performance decision. Texture, sheen, color, traction, and durability all shape how a space is experienced. Epoxy, polyurea, polyaspartic, and decorative concrete coatings give homeowners and business owners options that go far beyond paint, tile, or plain bare concrete. That range matters most in spaces people tend to overlook. A garage can feel like part of the home instead of the place where old stains and storage boxes collect. A laundry room or patio can shift from purely practical to genuinely polished. A thin layer of self-leveling concrete topped with a metallic epoxy finish can give an ordinary utility room the feel of a custom showroom. It's easy to feel and hard to fake. The finished look, though, depends on work most people never see. Alliance Direct starts by evaluating the slab, taking measurements, checking moisture levels, and running a scratch test to see how the concrete needs to be prepared. The crew diamond grinds the surface so the coating can bond correctly, then repairs cracks before the finish goes down. Most installations take one day, with the space usually back in use within 48 hours.

That preparation is where the difference shows. Corners, cracks, and hidden moisture are usually where shortcuts reveal themselves first. Alliance uses trained W-2 employees rather than a rotating group of subcontractors, and it brings commercial-grade materials into residential jobs. On select systems, the company offers lifetime warranties because the goal is not just a nice-looking floor on day one. It is a floor that still looks right after real life has settled in. Craig said the work follows a simple philosophy: "Leave things better than you found them." Amanda added that the strongest sign of success is equally simple: "The best compliment is a referral." Those ideas shape the company's broader view of the work, along with the belief that commercial coatings have to handle constant traffic, traction, downtime, durability, and long-term performance. Those standards carry over into North Texas homes, where slabs shift and expand with seasonal heat. Done right, the floor becomes the detail that quietly ties the whole room together for friends, neighbors, realtors, and future buyers. To learn more, visit www.AllianceEpoxy.com.

Call it the One-Piece Rule: one of this fall's most popular fashion trends, and also the smartest way to get dressed while somehow still being the simplest. Instead of piecing together five brand-new looks from scratch, real style now hinges on a single, deliberate anchor—one bold piece, worn with confidence, everything else kept quiet around it. It plays out beautifully across a full week in the life of a young professional. Monday morning starts strong. A tailored navy suit—peplum jacket and matching trouser cinched at the waist with a slim gold belt—sets the tone for a power meeting: structured, composed, and unmistakably in charge. The peplum hem does the talking here, so everything else underneath stays clean, quiet, and confident. By the time the big pitch rolls around later in the week, the whole mood shifts entirely. A burgundy leather peplum jacket takes over the room, styled down with a chocolate faux-leather miniskirt for easy, grounded contrast underneath. It's the boldest silhouette of the whole week, finished with a rich chocolate suede bootie for warmth, and proof that conviction, not just polish, is what actually gets a big idea across the table. WEDNESDAYFRIDAY Casual Friday leans into elevated denim: barrel-leg jeans, prized for their twisting front seam, paired with a golden silk blouse, leopard shoes, and a black belt with tiny gold studs. The rest stays deliberately simple, letting that one seam detail carry the whole look effortlessly through the day. After-work drinks call for shine. A crystal-embellished sheer shirt, oversized and cut like a starlit night sky, layers effortlessly over a soft, ruched mesh skirt for full monochrome polish— proof the rule works just as well once the sun finally goes down. Weekend, off-duty: a plush faux-fur jacket, worn loose and easy over a simple navy camisole and classic indigo denim. Texture becomes the statement here, no matter the season, closing out the whole week exactly where it began—one bold piece, quietly doing all the work.

MEET THE STYLIST

This Page: Stylist: Roxanne Carne

Stylist Roxanne Carne Roxanne Carne didn't set out to become a stylist so much as a translator, turning what a woman wants to feel into something she can actually wear. Hollywood-trained and based in North Dallas, Roxanne founded Roxanne Carne Personal Stylist in 2013 on a simple belief: style isn't vanity; it's strategy. She works across every layer of a client's life—closet, color, confidence, career—helping women walk into a room already looking like the answer. Today, she serves her fifth year on the Fashion Group International board as regional director, following four years on the AICI Chicago Midwest Chapter board.

But ask what she loves most about the work, and she won't mention the credentials. She'll tell you it's watching a client's entire relationship with her wardrobe change, sometimes in a single session—from overwhelmed to effortless, from "I have nothing to wear" to getting dressed without a second thought. For this shoot, she kept it simple and classic: a soft grey turtleneck, sleek black trousers, one piece doing the work. Exactly the philosophy she teaches every day. Roxannecarne.com

ROOTED IN CONFIDENCE ARTICLE BY TIFFANY DITTO PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZAHARRA HEMANI: BLUE GEM PORTRAITS

DRYBAR ALLEN HELPS CLIENTS ELEVATE THEIR STYLE THROUGH HEALTHY HAIR, CONFIDENCE, AND EXPERT BLOWOUTS.

30

H AIR CA R E | BEAUTY

“We really love making people feel beautiful and confident.” Whether it's soft waves for date night, a sleek style for the office, or a voluminous blowout before a special event, hair elevates confidence and ties an entire look together. And Drybar Allen has been creating this experience since opening its doors in 2024. "Everyone has their own personal style, and your hair really adds to that personality," says Morgan Zimbro, regional educator for Drybar's Allen and Rockwall locations. "It makes people blossom and really brings out confidence." Unlike traditional salons, Drybar focuses exclusively on styling services, allowing clients to enjoy professional blowouts, updos, and hair cleansing treatments. "A lot of our clients come here to take a deep breath and just feel a little bit of joy," Zimbro says. "It's not just about blowouts. Sometimes people want a quiet appointment where they can relax, and other times they want to chat and catch up. We really love making people feel beautiful and confident."

Beyond taking your hairstyle to the next level, Drybar stylists can help maintain your hair's health. While many people worry that frequent blowouts may damage their hair, Zimbro says professional styling can actually be beneficial when performed correctly. "Heat itself isn't automatically damaging," she explains. "Excessive heat and improper technique are what cause damage. Professional stylists are trained to work efficiently, use heat protectants, and customize temperatures based on each client's hair type." Every Drybar stylist completes an extensive onboarding program focused on hair health, product knowledge, and proper styling techniques. The result is a service designed to help clients maintain healthy, beautiful hair while still enjoying polished styles. Drybar is also introducing clients to a new way of caring for their hair at home with its recently launched Detox Reset collection. The four-product line is designed to remove buildup, eliminate pollutants, and rebalance the scalp. The collection addresses concerns ranging from hard water and product buildup to dryness and irritation, creating a healthier foundation for styling. "Just like healthy skin starts with skincare, healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp," Zimbro says. "When your scalp is balanced and free of buildup, your hair simply performs better." "We love getting to make people feel beautiful," Zimbro adds. "When people feel good about their hair, they feel more confident in themselves." CONTINUED >

YOUR ULTIMATE HAIR REFRESH Product buildup, hard water minerals, sweat, and dry shampoo residue can all weigh hair down and leave the scalp feeling irritated. Drybar's new Detox Reset collection is designed to create a clean foundation for healthier, better-performing hair. "People spend a lot of time conditioning their ends, but they often forget that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp," says Zimbro. Follow these simple steps to reset your routine:

01/

Prep the Scalp | Apply the Detox Reset Revive & Restore PreShampoo Cleanser directly to the scalp before washing. This treatment helps loosen buildup and impurities.

02/

Cleanse Thoroughly | Wash with the Detox Reset Shampoo to remove pollutants, odors, minerals, and product residue. Zimbro recommends double cleansing: use the detox shampoo first, then follow with a shampoo tailored to your hair's specific needs.

03/

Rehydrate | Replace your usual conditioner with the Detox Reset Scalp & Hair Treatment Mask. The formula cleanses while restoring moisture to the scalp.

04/

Soothe and Protect | Apply the Detox Reset Soothing Scalp Serum to wet or dry hair as needed. The peppermint-infused serum helps relieve dryness and irritation.

05/

Jennifer Dodson of Haute Beauty Aesthetics Discusses Why Looking and Feeling Your Best May Be the Most Important Style Choice of All.

The First Outfit A great outfit can make a statement and inspire confidence. But according to Jennifer Dodson, founder and owner of Haute Beauty Aesthetics in Fairview, true style begins long before someone opens their closet. “Our body is our first outfit,” Dodson says. “We were born in that one, and we’ll die in it. No matter what we wear, if we look in the mirror and don’t like the way we look or don’t feel good in our own skin, we’re not going to feel good in what we’re wearing.” For Dodson, helping people feel confident in that “first outfit” has become her life’s work.

HIDDEN WITHIN

Among the clinic’s most popular treatments is Botox, which Dodson says often serves as an introduction to aesthetics. “If somebody is brand new to aesthetics and asks where to start, Botox is usually the biggest win,” she says. “When you soften forehead lines or crow’s feet and can even lift the brows a little, people simply look more rested and refreshed.” The goal, she says, is not to erase every sign of aging. Instead, modern aesthetics increasingly focuses on supporting the body’s natural processes. “I saw Jen today for Botox and filler,” said Charles Jordan in a Google review of the clinic. “Her work is precise and natural, exactly the look I wanted. You can tell she truly cares about her clients and takes pride in delivering beautiful, balanced results.” CONTINUED >

A board-certified nurse practitioner, Dodson spent more than 20 years working in emergency medicine before discovering a passion for aesthetics in 2017. While she found emergency medicine rewarding, she was drawn to aesthetics after seeing the confidence boost her own treatments gave her. Today, her practice focuses on confidence, wellness, and helping people feel like themselves again. “It’s extremely rewarding to help somebody feel better than they did when they walked in the door,” she says. “Whether that’s with Botox, skin treatments, collagen stimulation, weight loss, or wellness therapies, helping someone regain confidence can truly change how they feel every day.” Haute Beauty Aesthetics offers a range of services, including injectables like Botox, collagen injections, dermal fillers, hair restoration, and more; wellness services like weight loss and peptides; and skin rejuvenation services such as facials, Hydrafacial, chemical peels, dermaplaning, and more.

One of the fastest-growing areas in aesthetics is collagen stimulation. Dodson describes collagen as a supportive net beneath the skin. “As that net gets thinner and thinner, that’s where you start seeing sagging,” she says. “These collagen-stimulating treatments help regenerate some of what has been lost and get to the root of the problem.” Unlike quick fixes, these treatments work gradually, encouraging the body to rebuild its own collagen over time. “Once we restore that support, we’re really just maintaining it as people continue to age naturally,” Dodson says.

A LAYERED APPROACH

The emphasis on natural aging and long-term skin health extends beyond injectables. At Haute Beauty Aesthetics, Dodson works alongside licensed esthetician Olivia, who focuses on the skin’s surface through treatments such as Hydrafacials, chemical peels, and microneedling. “I always tell patients that Olivia takes care of everything on the top of the skin, the epidermis layer, and I take care of everything underneath,” Dodson says. “It’s really important to look at all layers of the skin.” That comprehensive approach has become increasingly important as wellness treatments, including peptides, gain popularity.

RESTORING THE BODY WITH PEPTIDES

Peptides are currently one of the most talked-about topics in aesthetics and wellness, and something that sets Dodson apart as a provider is her measured approach. Unlike online providers, Dodson monitors patients on these medications to ensure patients’ health remains the top priority. “I’m a very conservative provider,” she says. “I’m only going to offer a peptide if I feel confident that it’s a safe medication.” Currently, Haute Beauty offers select peptides, such as NAD, often referred to as an anti-aging peptide; BPC-157, commonly used to support healing and reduce inflammation; and GLP-1s, commonly used to support weight loss.

“There are so many peptides out there,” Dodson says. “But I want to make sure what I’m prescribing is safe for my patients.” That commitment to safety includes reviewing medical histories, discussing family histories, and carefully considering potential risks. “These therapies need to be prescribed and followed by a medical provider,” she says. “There may be family histories or underlying conditions where someone needs to have a conversation about risks versus benefits.”

CREATING CONFIDENCE

For Dodson, the ultimate goal is helping patients look refreshed, feel healthier, and regain confidence. Sometimes, the results are deeply emotional. And while fashion trends may change from season to season, confidence never goes out of style. “We can all go shopping and buy amazing outfits,” Dodson says. “But if we don’t feel good about ourselves, we’re not going to feel we look our best.” To book an appointment, visit www.HauteBeautyAesthetics.com.

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
