As the summer sun begins to cast its warm glow upon us, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the June edition of Allen CIty Lifestyle. In this issue, we proudly present to you our highly anticipated Gentlemen's issue—an ode to the people, resources and organizations serving the men in our community.

Our Gentlemen's issue is more than just a celebration of material indulgence—it is a testament to the values of integrity, chivalry, and grace that define a true gentleman. Through thought-provoking interviews, captivating profiles, and insightful commentary, we aim to spark meaningful conversations and inspire a new generation of gentlemen to uphold the noble virtues of honor, respect, and empathy.

In honor of our Gentlemen's' Issue, I want to share with you a few of my favorite quotes regarding the importance of upstanding men in our society.

• "A gentleman is one who puts more into the world than he takes out."

- George Bernard Shaw

• "The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good." - Samuel Johnson

• "The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively." - Bob Marley

• "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." - Malcolm X

• "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

- Martin Luther King Jr.

• "A man of integrity is someone who lives by his principles, even when it's difficult, and who treats others with dignity and respect." - Dalai Lama

• "True masculinity is not measured by the strength of a man's muscles, but by the strength of his character and his commitment to kindness and respect." - Justin Trudeau

• "The world is in need of men who will lead with compassion, who will seek justice for the oppressed, and who will inspire others through their actions." - Barack Obama

As you embark on this journey through the pages of our June issue, may you find inspiration, enlightenment, and moments of pure indulgence.

With warm regards,

June 2024

The Jack Family: Athletes, Entrepreneurs, Philanthropists

Breaking Barriers and Making History in Sports Ownership.

When it comes to the Jack family (son Myles and mother La Sonjia Jack) there seems to be nothing they can’t do. After spending 8 years in the NFL, former linebacker Myles Jack has proven to be a “jack of all trades”. We’ve all heard that before, but have you heard the entire quote? A jack of all trades is a master of none, but often is better than a master of one. That’s exactly how the Jack family thinks. Why play one sport when you can play more? Myles picked up a football for the first time when he was 6. He quickly became a super star in pop warner in both football and basketball then went on to break records in high school track and football. And why own one team, when you can have a stake in 4? Myles and his mother LaSonjia recently became the first African American ECHL majority owners of the Allen Americans Professional

Hockey team and they are investors in 3 more. What used to be a long-standing tradition that parishioners of black churches found themselves engrossed in fizzled out in the 1930s when they were shut out of rented hockey rinks. The Jack family is breaking barriers in many ways.

With a phenom athlete and a c-suite mom, owning and managing a team is a winning combination. This purchase followed their joint investment partnership in the Jacksonville Icemen, the Savannah Ghost Pirates, and the Tahoe Knight Monsters. Since the acquisition, the Allen Americans have moved up to #3 in ECL attendance and engagement and are now in pursuit of their 5th championship, which the team hasn’t experienced since 2016. They credit much of their success to strong partnerships with people like Andy Kaufman and organizations like Zawyer Sports along with the support of Rev Entertainment.

Success runs deep in both the Allen American hockey history and in the Jack family legacy. Myles is an overachiever in many ways and is in training to be a pilot and has already earned his license!  Myles isn’t the only superstar in the family though; his younger brother Jahlen Jack stands 6’ 4” and plays basketball for Fort Valley State University an HBCU in their home state of Georgia. The allstar duo has a key support player, their mother LaSonjia Jack. She managed to lead her sons to the big leagues and eventually on to own a piece of the pie all while leaning into her two-decade long stint in telecom where she has spent most of her time in the c-suite. La Sonjia plans to bring the skills she’s developed in the corporate arena into hockey, and the world once her book is released, “The LJ Way”. Which is a mix between a motivational piece and a career development tool.

LaSonjia and Myles look forward to not just winning championships, but also continuing the legacy of giving back to the community. Off the ice, they’re giving scholarships through the Myles Jack Foundation “Mylestone” Scholarship for students at Edward Waters University. They are also passing out school supplies and shoes to children in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club, and financially supporting organizations like: Allen/Fairview Chamber of Commerce (where LJ sits on the board), Girl Scouts of America, local ISDs, Allen Police, Fire Department and Children’s Hospital.

The main goal for Myles Jack and his family is to be able to use the talents that they have developed to enrich the Allen community and residents by giving them access to view these events in person–oh and another championship won’t hurt either!

We love our Patients!

“Everyone in this office is phenomenal! I loved seeing faith-based art and Bible verses throughout the office. The front desk ladies were so pleasant and helpful! This was my first time meeting Dr. Wood and he was amazing. He took his time explaining what each test was for and answered any questions I had. I never felt rushed or made to feel foolish for not knowing what things meant. Marshall helped me pick out a new frame and really took his time making sure I loved what I got! I appreciated his honest opinion and his patience. After going home I decided I wanted to exchange my frames for a different pair I had seen in their office. I came back and had a young lady help me exchange them with no issues at all! She was so sweet and did not make me feel bad for changing my mind. Everyone in this office is so great!!! Highly recommend”

Hey, gentlemen! Looking for a unique and upscale spot to get together with your buddies? What if there were a place that combined the thrill of watching sports legends with your comrades, all while experiencing a roaring stadium vibe? A place where you could enjoy high-quality food instead of greasy fries on UFC fight nights (with no cover charges)? Well, there is, and it’s not your typical sports bar.

Elevating the sports bar experience is an art. G.O.A.T’s Arena is a 7,000-square-foot sensory event, boasting a 38-foot video wall, live music, two floors of seating, four different audio zones, and artwork featuring your favorite sports legends gracing its interior. Its open layout welcomes guests who triumphantly cheer on their favorite teams, but with a twist. With an emphasis on first-class and healthy food made in-house, G.O.A.T’s is not your average guy’s hangout. 'We don’t serve the typical pre-frozen wings that you might expect in sports bars,' says Rohith Reddy, one of G.O.A.T’s owners. Instead, G.O.A.T’s offers a knockout menu with scrumptious entrees like lamb chops, salmon, braised short ribs, trout fish & shrimp, homemade sauces, veggie enchiladas, all prepared under the guidance of Chef Hugo Galvan, alongside selectively crafted house cocktails. The Why Behind The Joseph Groh Foundation

BY CORTNEY WILBANKS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

In the heart of Fairview Texas, nestled within the warm embrace of community spirit, lies the story of the Joseph Groh Foundation. Founded in 2009 by Mr.Joe Groh himself, this 501(c) organization extends necessary resources to help support individuals within the construction trades industry. Mr. Groh's journey to philanthropy

GIVING BACK | LOCAL SERVICES 28
“Mr. Groh's journey to philanthropy began with a personal tragedy that changed his life forever.”

began with a personal tragedy that changed his life forever. Following a bicycle accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, Mr. Groh found himself grappling with the uncertainty of what his future would look like. Having dedicated 35 years of his life to the HVAC industry, he was faced with the decision to reinvent his career path. During his seven-month recovery period, Mr. Groh experienced an outpouring of kindness and support from his local community when they helped his wife make his home more accessible for when he returned. Moved by the community’s acts of neighborly love, he was inspired to pay it forward and make a difference in the lives of others facing similar challenges. Thus, the Joseph Groh Foundation was born.

To date, the foundation has awarded over 100 grants totaling $1.1 million to individuals in need, offering assistance that covers what neither insurance nor government programs will provide. These grants encompass a wide range of support, including wheelchair accessible vehicles, home & bath modifications, specialized rehabilitation equipment and assistive technology (i.e. voice operated controls) equipment. Each grant is tailored to the specific needs of the recipient, ensuring they receive the assistance necessary to enhance their quality of life. For Mr. Groh, the foundation serves as a testament to the power of community and the importance of paying it forward.

STRETCHYOU R POTENTIAL

When getting out of bed in the morning, do you find that your body unfurls like an antique accordion in need of a little WD-40? If so, do you chalk up this stiffness to inevitable aging and simply resign to walk it off after chasing a couple of ibuprofen with your morning coffee? Although it's a fact that the natural aging process tends to tighten joints and restrict range of motion, why surrender to these changes when something as straightforward as stretching can help reverse the situation? In the quest for improved flexibility and mobility, many individuals turn to self-stretching routines as a means of enhancing their physical performance and overall well-being. While self-stretching undoubtedly has its merits and is certainly better than doing nothing at all, it has inherent limitations that can hinder optimal results. One of the primary drawbacks is the difficulty in achieving deep, targeted stretches without proper guidance and assistance, thus limiting the maximum effectiveness of the stretch. This is where practitioner-assisted stretching, offered at Stretch Zone, takes center stage.

How Practitioner Assisted Stretching Can Improve Your Health

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE | HEALTH + WELLNESS 32

With Drew Brees, the legendary NFL quarterback, on the board of Stretch Zone, the spotlight shines on the efficacy of this method for a diverse range of individuals, from young teen athletes to seniors seeking not only to improve their range of motion but also to reap the many other benefits of stretching, such as correcting muscle imbalances, lowering blood pressure, and elevating mood.

At Stretch Zone, certified stretch practitioners utilize a proprietary methodology designed to maximize the effectiveness of each stretch session. Through a combination of dynamic stretching techniques and personalized assistance, Stretch Zone's certified practitioners work closely with clients to address individual limitations and target key muscle groups for optimal results. This focused and guided approach allows for deeper, more sustained stretches than typically achievable through self-stretching alone.

One of the distinct advantages of practitioner-assisted stretching lies in the ability to access a broader range of motion safely and effectively. By working with a certified stretch practitioner, clients can push past their usual boundaries and explore new levels of flexibility while minimizing the risk of injury as they retrain their stretch reflex. This is particularly beneficial for those in demanding physical professions, such as firefighters and police officers. Athletes looking to enhance their athletic performance and reduce the likelihood of strains or sprains during intense training and competition can also greatly benefit from this approach.

Joslin Sansom, owner of Stretch Zone in Allen and Rockwall, often hears a recurring sentiment from her clients: "I rediscover my love for Stretch Zone after each visit. I never fully understood the effectiveness of this stretching method until I experienced it myself."

Our male clients tend to be skeptical initially, but once they give it a try, they become some of our most enthusiastic supporters! There's nothing quite like hearing the success stories firsthand when I visit the studio.

It truly fosters a barbershop vibe, where experiences are exchanged and personal progress is celebrated. We proudly boast being the home of better golf games, faster miles, and victorious pickleball players!

MeetChiefSteveDye LEADING WITH HEART:

A STORY OF PASSION, FAITH, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Steve Dye's journey to becoming Chief of Allen PD is a tale woven with passion, faith, and a deep-rooted connection to his community. From his earliest days, he dreamt of wearing the badge; however, climbing the ranks to Chief was never part of his initial plan.

“Being a leader means being a servant first. My philosophy centers on serving the community I love, with every decision rooted in that core belief.”
HOMETOWN HERO | LOCAL SERVICES
38

Chief Dye spent two decades dedicated to his patrol duties, content with the day-to-day grind. It was his wife who saw his leadership potential and urged him to aim higher. Taking her encouragement to heart, he took the leap, passing a promotion test in 2004 and earning the stripes of a lieutenant at Garland PD. In just seven months, he swiftly ascended to the role of assistant chief.

Over the years, Chief Dye's career took him through various leadership roles in neighboring communities, each step guided by his commitment to public service. A brief detour into city management in Grand Prairie followed, but it was a role that failed to ignite his passion. Chief Dye's heart remained in Allen. His unwavering faith and belief in where he truly belonged led him to turn down six other opportunities, reaffirming his commitment to serving his hometown. He found his way back to familiar territory, returning to Allen to take on the role of Chief—a decision rooted in a sense of homecoming.

Chief Dye's journey back to Allen, his beloved hometown, has been nothing short of a calling from a higher power. When the opportunity arose for him to step into the role of Chief of Police, he and his wife recognized it as part of a divine plan for their family. Having resided in Allen from 2006 to 2012, Chief Dye maintained strong ties with the community even during his absence. Now, having returned to Allen, Chief Dye is not just assuming a position; he is embracing a calling that he believes was meant to be—a true blessing in his life.

As he reflects on his journey back to Allen, he is reminded of the profound connections forged during his time here. Despite his short absence in recent years, his ties to this community have remained loyal.

Grapplers Pinning Down Success

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY ALLEN TX WRESTLING

In a state where football is sacrosanct, there has emerged a newcomer who, in the last two decades or so, has risen in “rizz” at a rate heretofore unseen.

The epicenter of this cultural phenomenon is Allen, Texas. Here, under the direction of mat maestro Jerry Best, Allen High barks loudest in the sport of wrestling, making others look like mere Chihuahuas.

AHS’ boys team had won 14 consecutive state titles (2010-23) before coming up 4.5 points short versus reigning state champ Arlington Martin.

But as disappointing as that hiccup proved to be, Allen High’s girls team mitigated the pain by capturing its fourth consecutive state title, outpointing Conroe Woodlands College Park, 123-68.

UNDER TEXAS COACHING LEGEND JERRY BEST, ALLEN HIGH'S WRESTLING PROGRAM BOASTS A GOLD-MEDAL STANDARD

ATHLETE LIFE | SPORTS + RECREATION 42
“(SUCCESS) REALLY DOES COME DOWN TO HARD WORK. AND OUR CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE. KIDS GROW UP WANTING TO BE A PART OF IT.”
– COACH JERRY BEST

So what’s the magic elixir? Unsurprisingly, Coach Best offers a not too sexy answer.

“There’s no real secret,” he says. “Boring maybe, but it really does come down to hard work. And our championship pedigree. Kids grow up wanting to be a part of it.”

Best’s track record certainly impresses. No other school in University-Interscholastic-League history has ruled any sport like Best’s Allen Eagles have wrestling.

Far down the totem pole from AHS’ 14 straight state titles is the girls swim-and-dive program at Highland Park. It owns the second-longest title streak (10, 2001-10).

Best, encroaching on his 23rd year helming AHS’ legendary wrestling program, boasts an ink-cartridge-draining resume.

Highlights include 19 coach-of-the-year designations since 2008.

Best was honored as Texas’ top wrestling coach in 2009, ’11, ’13, ’14 and ’23. Also, in 2013, the National Wrestling Coaches Association named him Region 6's #1 wrestling coach. Then, in 2014, the National Federation of State High School Associations proclaimed Best to be the best in Section 6.

Best’s AHS tenure has produced 244 state qualifiers, 190 state placers and 67 state champions. Eleven Best tutees have earned recognition as Texas’ “Most Outstanding Wrestler,” and 17 have secured roster spots on Team USA’s World Team.

However …

Unless one aspires to become the next “Iron Claw,” the road all but ends with competition in either college or the Olympics.

The ever-swelling popularity of mixed martial arts, though, has at least opened the door for wrestlers who broaden their skill set.

In fact, Best’s most renowned AHS grappler is threetime state champ Bo Nickal (Class of 2014). Nickal recently improved his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) record to 6-0 after Cody Brundage submitted in round two of a welterweight bout in Paradise, Nevada.

Nickal, a Penn State three-time NCAA champion, credits Best for instilling the intensity and focus paramount to UFC success.

Accordingly, I half-expected Best to be a no-nonsense, meanstreaked curmudgeon whose success requires running roughshod.

Instead, I found Best to be a disciplinarian yes, but far from a dictatorial taskmaster. In fact, he (a three-time, D-II national champ following an injury-plagued two years at Oklahoma State) and I (a University-of-Oklahoma journalism nerd) good-naturedly exchanged Bedlam barbs til the cows came home.

Even more telling, Best’s disciples gush over his impacting their lives.

Kade Moore, a four-time state placer and now a redshirt freshman at the University of Missouri, claims “There wouldn’t be a program (in Allen) without Jerry Best. His influence on me as a coach, mentor and friend is unmatched. Me and everyone who goes through (his) program owe it all to him.”

Jerry Best, head coach of Allen High's dominant wrestling program, was inducted into the NCAA Division II Hall of Fame in March 2010 for a stellar career at the University of Central Oklahoma.   Wrestling at 142 pounds, Best won three consecutive Division II wrestling titles (1994-96).

Best first turned heads as an undefeated fourtime state champion at Chandler (Oklahoma) High. He then logged an injury-plagued two-anda-half stint at Oklahoma State before transferring to Central Oklahoma.

In 1994, Best posted an 18-4 record en route to his first individual national championship. His dominance also proved pivotal in the UCO Bronchos (sic) claiming the team national title that year.

The following season Best registered a 24-5 mark that led again to national titles for both Best individually and Central Oklahoma as a team.

Best then put the cherry on top with a 35-4 record and a third consecutive national title that forever secured his legacy in a state famous for wrestling warriors. (The Bronchos finished second nationwide in 1996.)

Overall, Best finished with a 77-13 career mark that included a 40-1 record against Division II opponents.

Even kids knee-high to a grasshopper get inspired by this grappling guru via Best’s “Best Trained” Youth Program.

In fact, Zeke Liescheski, AHS Class of 2024, whet his insatiable appetite for wrestling as a mere 5-year-old who jettisoned a kindergarten sleep mat for a Best-Trained big-boy mat.

“Coach Best has taught me discipline … how to plan ahead and approach everything you do with mental toughness and fortitude,” says Liescheski, who became a state champ as only a freshman.

Liescheski (3.5 GPA) will this fall study kinesiology at Tarleton State and next year help inaugurate a Tarleton wrestling program that will mark Texas’ first at the DI level.

Meanwhile, Liescheski’s female training partner, AHS senior Jasmine Robinson, a 17-year-old U.S. Army enlistee, will extend her career via the Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP).

Robinson has received a special exemption from combat duty so she can prepare for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

A four-time state champ who placed third in the world while competing for Team U.S.A., Robinson (3.4 GPA) plans to pursue a career in either biochemistry or sociology.

“So Jasmine, what has wrestling under Coach Best taught you?,” I ask.

“I now know if I truly want something in life, hard work and dedication will set me up to achieve even what may now seem impossible.”

“One more. What’s it like to train with Zeke?”

“I think it’s funny people ask because I’ve been wrestling with guys since middle school. What did Zeke say?”

“He says you are really strong.”

“He better.”

Perfecting Your Golf Swing

Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.

GET ACTIVE | LIFE + CULTURE 54

01. Get

fit for equipment.

If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.

On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.

As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

02. Get good golf instruction, REGULARLY.

We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.

Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.

03.

There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:

Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz

Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella

Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs

Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)

Practice your short game every day.

04.

You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.

Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.
